"Is Mass Appeal the dopest sample find in hip hop history?"

To this day I am absolutely floored at how quickly that sample comes and goes. Premier was a beast at chops, but for this one, he just had the ear to know that looping it was all it took.

The real discussion I wanna have is how sometimes it isn't about how you flip a sample but finding that magic part in the first place (arguably the hardest part of the process).

Now I know that there are many other cases to be made, so if not Mass Appeal, then what is, in your opinion?

but I'd have a hard time crowning it as the undisputed #1, even in Premier's catalog

another one of these to me is Tribe's "1nce Again", but that's more due to the rearrangement.

is mainly because of how recognizable that beat is. I mean, that's arguably Premier's most well known beat. Premier's had more brilliant finds, no doubt, but has any been so successful?

As for 1nce again, you could go all day talking about Dilla's ear for finding a sample that most would miss. The one that baffles me the most is the guitar loop he used for Phat Kat's Microphone Master from that King Crimson song.

You could blink and miss that part. Just like Mass Appeal. I love moments like that as it truly makes hip hop such a unique art form in that regard.

...to let you know that one of their songs sampled it. For the longest I didn't realize that it was for "1nce Again" Man, Dilla's ear was crazy. Most folks would've definitely missed that due to looking for something a tad bit more obvious.

Most won't even believe you when you show em Jessica, you gotta stretch it out for people to hear it. Shook ones is actually a really good answer, because it's a definitive beat, like Mass Appeal, and came seemingly from nothing.

And speaking of the Crooklyn Dodgers, I think even crazier is the sample for Group Home's Getaway Remix from that same joint.

because it took people a LONG time to figure that one out... Havoc must have been screwing around for a while before putting that together.

that song is a classic, one of those joints where you don't even think about what the sample actually might have been.

In response to Reply # 2

I got two friends who've I've known since the early 90's who both used and made beats on the ASR-10 and believe me, when I was making beats on my crappy JS-30 I use to slow EVERY sample down to almost it was nothing but muddy earthquake samples but when one of them showed me how he could time stretch the sample without making it sound all long and drawn out I was floored and realized how so many producers were making beats with sample in the same key as the record but slowed down up sped up.

I wish I had it but when he showed me how to work it, it was a headache to learn and that shit was too big to tote around too, but damn his filtered basslines were so smooth, when I got my MPC I was pissed that filtering with it was not even close to the ASR-10.

Anyway to make a long story short, Havoc was killing it with the beats thanks to his ASR-10.

not so much the technical skill needed to re-work the sample, but more the artistic license he used in re-interpreting the original song.

of a piece of a song literally jumping out and screaming "SAMPLE ME!" at the top of it's lungs.

but I also think it's a "hindsight is 20/20" moment, as in we're able to say "well that was obvious" AFTER hearing the No ID sample usage on Invocation, know what I mean? In other words if I knew about hiphop sampling, but had never heard Invocation, and was listening to Jennifer, I'm not sure I'd rewind that particular part of the song and think "shit that could be dope..."

Then again, I'm not a producer, maybe you are...haha.

Pete had a mysterious ear. What he was thinking when he was listening through the chaotic "I Love Music" I'll never know. Why he chose the part he did is something that I'll always wonder, and I DEFINITELY would have skipped over it if it was me.

Pete is full of these things though, not sampling the obvious break. Perhaps my favorite is his sampling of Soft Machine's Moon in June for the Fades Em All remix, I'm amazing at how he heard that sound panned in the left and decided to filter the rest out to make one of the hardest beats I've ever heard.

As for Runnin', you gotta hand it to Dilla moreso for his blending of Woody Herman and Stan Getz rather than an outright brilliant find. Dilla really learned from the school of Pete of how to properly mix unlike samples together to sound perfect.

And I agree. What a strange sound that ended up making a beat that I would imagine having been made by a madman.

Premier is no stranger to sampling oddball shit. Come Clean, Physical Stamina, Statik, Tha Realness, the intro to Nas is Like, that sound sandwiched between the strings on Come Get Me (sounds like something charging up), or the one on the Voodoo Child remix (sounds like a... I dont even know lol)

In regards to the sample Havoc flipped for Shook Ones, wasn't that a mystery for like 15 years, and Havoc swore up and down that nobody would ever find it?Aand then somebody finally figured it out and Havoc became mad depressed lol. I thought I remembered hearing about this a few years ago.

I hear the similarity but I couldn't ever piece what exactly Havoc could do to that to result in Shook Ones. You can probably find in-depth discussions on the-breaks.com forums about that candidate ("Thackeray Meets Faculty")

It was at least 2010 or later till I heard the herbie sample.. so for a while anyone who knew that it was a Herbie sample was staying REAL quiet lol

It's at double speed, and even when I double it, I can't figure it out. Sounds like some mid to late 70's soul/jazz.

Fucking retarded.

As much as I love Jay Dee (and I'm tempted to flood this post with his best moments), it's DJ Premier that baffles me the most with the sheer ridiculousness of his sampling.

In an interview with DJ Revolution, he talked about his digging methods, which are pretty much as strange as his flips.

"One day I might just limit myself to the "C" section of a genre, because that's the first letter of my first name."

You could substitute "deepest" with "dopest" and it still works.

This thread is really making me realize how incredible he is. Not that I ever doubted his status, but god damn. His technique is just too classic.

My crew is working on bringing Premier to our monthly party this summer. DJing alongside that dude (and hearing him cut up his own productions) will damn near make my life complete.

What I like about Premier, Pete Rock, & J-Dilla is that all three of them are amazing when it comes to sampling and chopping shit up to make crazy ass beats and each of them always say that the other two are their favorites.

Premier says Pete Rock & J-Dilla are his favorites
Pete Rock says Premier & J-Dilla are his favorites
J-Dilla said Pete Rock & Premier was his favorite

So to me it's the tri-factor of ultimate producers who are always trying to top the other, you know they do.

All three of them are my favorites and are the top favorites of A LOT of people but each had their own sound, flavor, and techniques that made them the best.

Not the best, not the greatest loop or sample, but probably favorite. When I first heard that loop I had to listen to it 5 times before I realized what it was. Absolutely fantastic.

The thing with Premier is he can kill you with a chop, kill you with a stab, or kill you with a loop. Doesn't really matter. Even a song where you have the loop he will tweak it to something amazing. Take D'Evils, for example...

"Ten Crack Commandments" because it's something so simple that most producers passed right over it. I remember an Primo interview where he said he ran into Da Beatminerz right after that track dropped, and they told him, "Damn, why didn't we think of that?"

For reference:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YknF5saKQTk

And as Doc alluded to above, "You Can't Stop the Prophet" comes from the end of this track. Just two notes at the tail end of a solo. It's at about 5:16:

They were by-and-large a loops/drums unit, right? Some obscure selection/timing for sure, but they weren't gonna listen to a 1977 Les McCann record and say "HEY! I should catch those two notes and scratch them live over a beat!"

That's Premier and only Premier.

Absolute classic and still sounds HUGE on a big system.

That's ridiculous. This thread has given me a new appreciation for Preem and sampling in general. I never thought to use something so short and otherwise insignificant. I would have passed right over every sample in this thread. Really shows that you can make something dope out of ANY record (if you're DJ Premier).

I know it's not rare or probably have been found but about two months ago I was going thru some records and picked-up Ahmad Jamal's "Jamalca", loved "Misdemeanor" song and just thought that I need to go and make some tunes for the other gems from this album, while just sitting down listening to each song of course I hear a few Premier samples on it cause he has sampled "Misdemeanor" as well; but what got me excited is when I heard "Don't Misunderstand" and loving the strings and said I should flip this then bam that's when heard the sample from "One Day" it's only like three or four seconds too.

Here you go "Don't Misunderstand" : https://youtu.be/oC1KFO3JPec?t=1m23s listen close or you will miss it

Here's "One Day": https://youtu.be/EsuE8PABZkI

It's just amazing how he takes these small pieces and make dope beats with them.

I'm mainly talking about samples that are so buried in a song that you could easily miss it if you didn't have a generational talent/ear for the stuff. That sample is right at the beginning of the song and has no vocals or drums or anything on it, so it feels less of a "whoa how did he hear that?" than something like Shook Ones or I Gave You Power.

Do you see what I mean?

In response to Reply # 98

Pete's "Tru Master" came out in 1998 and when Madlib's Quasimoto "Unseen" album dropped in 2000 when "Return Of The Loop Digga" interlude came on (where he's at a record store looking for breaks) one of the samples was the same Impressions sample that Pete used for "Tru Master".

I was amazed then cause I then remembered what song it was and was surprised how Pete chopped these horns up; Madlib played about four or five other (already used) samples in that song as well.

"...And Let a Man Be a Man," by Dyke and the Blazers.

That break is at most a bar/two seconds long. So I don't know if the guys at Ultimate Beats and Breaks were the first people who found it, or someone else found it and UBB remixed and extended the break/loop by a couple of bars and put it on their record. But the drums aren't open/the bells aren't clear for THAT long. I'm pretty sure most artists that sampled it in the '80s/'90s were using the UBB version.

For reference, it starts at about 1:43 on here:

As soon as I hear that break I think of "Sally" even though I think two others used it that same year, I still think "Sally" pre-dated them by a few months.

...and throughout the aughts, you would've seen much Primo love on these boards. Touching on what PCProductions said and based on the timeframe you have been posting here, it's Primo's latter output that has gotten much criticism. By the time you have gotten on here, most Premier talk regarding his classic eras had been exhausted. You came upon cats criticizing his more recent output. Even then, you still had a good number of Primo defenders.
