One of the dopest voices around and (probably because he's a producer) he knows how to ride a beat.

Dre feels out of element on this track though. Not sure I'm feeling his flow. I assumed this was a Dr. Dre beat. It seems like the producers around him make Dre beats better than Dre does these days. Doctor's Advocate is probably the best Dre-produced album he never produced... this side of the 2000s of course.

If you gonna make a single for Kendrick...make a single for Kendrick! This should be Dre ft. Kendrick Lamar.

I really hope he don't lose his creative control fucking with Aftermath. If he'd heard that beat without Dre present this would have been another song.

to be more palatable/appealing through a more familiar filter

Because this joint is nice but it's nothing he hasn't been doing as well or better on his own for the past couple years.

He's just loaning Dre a piece of his young & inspired zone in exchange for some of the exposure Dre can give him on a mainstream level.

Songs like this give hope that these two Compton craftsmen separated by a couple decades in age can find enough common ground to put out a formula that works which allows Kendrick to blow to the level his talent warrants while also jump-starting/extending Dre's career the way folks like Cube, D.O.C., Snoop & Eminem have in the past.

But please don't act like Kendrick putting out heat is something new or something he needed Dre's help to do.

"Dude can deliver the hell out of a verse"

lol

Is that what we look for now? Guy doesn't even put his own cadence on it anymore...

He didn't even produce the track...

So basically he adds absolutely nothing to this track other than a name to help Kendrick sell...

Well, I hope that happens for his sake.

But again, if this were ANYONE else other than Dre, it would not get a pass like this.

No way.

100% ABSOLUTELY. POSITIVELY. THAT. SHIT.

Catch A Fade has had me stuck for a week or so now, as evidenced by the timestamp/somewhat-forced-Indeep-hit-referencing-post-title/non-sequitor-spraying-review/attempt-at-in-deep-musical-discussion-while-in-GD-counting-crickets thread I typed out here: http://board.okayplayer.com/okp.php?az=show_topic&forum=4&topic_id=11154107&mesg_id=11154107&listing_type=search

Its not new Dre rapping in the writers cadence. Maybe that says something about Jay'-Z's writing/flow though, because Still DRE sounded natural for Dre, not like he was spitting it as he heard the reference track.

lmao some of yall act like he broke the code of the samurai and shit

for a dude that can't write he can spit, and it's funny because look at the people Dre has been emulating his whole career, Cube, DOC, Snoop, Em, 50, and now Kendrick? That's some damn good biting lol

but the track as a whole, eh. It's good but I'm more amused by Dre spitting like Kendrick, puts that "I need a doctor" BS to shame.

more rotations and perhaps this will grow on me.

like Snoop said, Dre need the right people around him to make Detox.

A lot of greats have written for Dre...

A lot of great have written for Puff...

How is that an excuse or a reason?

I don't see too much of a difference. Not in this context.

What is really silly to me is that, in Dre's case, people simply shrug and cop pleas for him.

"Man Dre can spit!!!"

lol lol its comedy

He literally added nothing to this track other than his name.

How long before he simply gets his Doom on and finds a "sound-a-like" to just spit under his name?

Because that is literally the only way he could do LESS

1) Kendrick Lamar owns this shit. There's nothing to slight him about in this.
2) The sample - WTF is this 2000?
3) The drums - I pray Dre has no production credits on this. Yes I know he didn't produce it, You know what the fuck I'm talking about. Dre isn't supposed to release anything that doesn't have a sound quality at a certain level. This ain't it. Maybe aight for someone else but not for, I'll shelve anything Dre.
4) Dre rapping - Let's not pretend that over the course of his career as a rapper, Dre has not maintained a certain character to himself as an MC. His earlier writers wrote to that, or alternately he owned his ghost written verses. When you start getting ghost writers that are a level above that it just kills the illusion, especially when you don't own the verses. That people thought it was Gibbs is a testament to the fact he didn't own shit on this.

I see your point.

back during the Death Row days, you couldn't tell if the verse was written by Snoop, DOC, RBX, or J-Flexx. Dre put his stamp on the verse and made their words work in his style.

Now a days, you can tell EXACTLY who wrote the verse, usually. I thought Dre sounded great on this track in particular, but I really don't see the point in Dre copying the flows and cadences hes handed...

dr dre can play Pac man and bring the ghosts all around him and I got respect for his place in hip hop, etc.. however bro Man still can't land that money track.

detox is like Al Capone's vault and Dr Dre is going around like Geraldo Riveria in search of that track and ain't nothing there yet and that is the truth.

a snoop/dre sounding track too much since his style is a lot more downtempo/experimental.

Dre's a glorified puppet!

Doesn't write or produced 90% of his shit, yet gets all this
props and praised, while other hard working talented artists actually putting in work continue to get over-looked

there is a fairly sizable number of posters who either don't rank Dre too highly on their all-time producers lists or fault him for using ghost producers or fault him for having his verses ghost written.

i personally don't really buy those arguments about the ghost-help since at least as an MC, people never really checked into the projects Dre rapped on to hear him rap. it was always about the beats. he was serviceable and didn't really detract from his music.

and as far as the ghost producing thing. i just think that's the way some producers work. i mean Organized Noise kinda does the same thing with musicians replaying samples and such, but they're known as a collective and Dre has always been the point man on his projects so i think that's why in the case of Organized Noise it's not a sticking point. plus none of the ghost producers (with the brief exception of Scott Storch) really made anything close in quality or in sales without him, which kind of shows that he does have a great ear for what can be popular.

Not bad at all, don't know why some ppl were complaining about the beat. Sounds great to me, a lot better than the actual singles Dre has been releasing for Detox
