"As far as producers go, Shock G is underrated."

I came around to fully recognizing his greatness as a producer when he released his solo album Fear of a Mixed Planet a few years back. Shock is a producer who's name never comes up among the greats yet his work sits right up there with the Dr. Dre's, RZAs, Premiers and so on. From his work with Digital Underground to 2pac to The Luniz and many others, Shock has put out some of the best produced songs and albums.

Here are only just a FEW of my favorite Shock G produced songs:

Digital Underground -Kiss You Back
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NHVoGse2LLI

Digital Underground ft. 2pac - Same Song
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w1iwYcC_GTY

2pac - What I Won't Do For Love (unreleased)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pLbH8VK4fp0

The Luniz ft. Shock G - 5150
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=umghR5VQ1Uk

The Luniz - Broke Hos
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZxMbmIcfmFU

Digital Underground - Oregano Flow
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w2j1-rl1gNA

2pac - So Many Tears
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tbs7wWLXLpw

Murs - Risky Business
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pOjw9rAWt2E

Digital Underground - Wassup Wit The Luv
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WfNMwFgeCJg

Raw Fusion - Rockin To the P.M.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zaUw_u55cEc

And I haven't got around to any of his songs from his solo album, Fear of a Mixed Planet. Shock G is one of the most talented producers of all time.

Yes he is... but.... only those early digital underground records there were 2 other guys doing the production and finding the samples & arranging the beats (dj fuze for example). But shock is real nice on the keys... and is a straight producer

>Was there a precedent for that in hip-hop?

Well in the Check The Technique Hip Hop book by Brian Coleman, Shock G breaks down making the Sex Packets album and speaks on the influences for Humpty Hump character. He said he remembered a George Clinton interview from when he was younger where George Clinton said that characters live on longer than human beings do. "They don't burn out as quickly." He also went onto to say, Humpty's like a nerdy version of a pimp, with some Benny Hill, Morris Day, and Groucho Marx's sense of humor mixed in. Another thing he added was that when he was messing around with the Humpty voice, it was like doing ventriloquism, with a Slick Rick spin to it. He also stated that he started the myth that Humpty was his brother from Tampa, a former lounge singer who had gotten into a grease accident in the kitchen. He said "he stood as a hero for all handicapped people around the world, because you can overcome anything."

Shock G keeps it fun and creative.

That's a great description...I'd never flushed it out like that but every reference rings true. Benny, Groucho....especially the slick rick non-chalance thing in the delivery.

This is funny considering DJ Quik has mentioned Shock G as one of the top producers and having a big influence on a him and his musical west coast sound.

Shock G for those who remember or were around know he had the p FUnk thing on lock before Dr Dre came and snatched it up and rode with it 1)

Shock G also with the novelty got caught up in character and to some he caught the same backlash and syndrome that worked against Father MC the duel character within and without threw some folks off 2)

problem with Shock he hit so hard with sex packets and when he couldn't bring that punch line back again with follow up hits then He got the Terence Trent D'arby syndrome even though songs of P had some heat 2)

Bro Man can play, however DU didn't keep the hits coming and the whole west coast movement flipped and in a hurry.

Shock G was in a catch 22 had appeal on the Hammer tip and yet wanted to have the same respect as Dr Dre and Dj Quik.

looking forward to his book and he is a very knowledgable cat who battled his own demons and glad to see him still touring and doing his thing, however it should have been so much more.

Shock G outta be spoken as a Producer in the same breath as Eric Sermon for real fo real.IMO

It wasn't as big as "The Humpty Dance" but it was much bigger than "Doowutchalike". If anything hurt them it was the EP sandwiched in between the two albums. It felt like a ripoff at the time, they should have just put "Same Song" & "Tie the Knot" on "Sons of the P".

and to me it's because of his work with the most underrated emcee of all time. Saafir.

his work with Pac, D.U., etc. speaks for itself.

he have some cool joints with Saafir on both Hit List (running man) and Mr.NoNo (broad minded with the d'angelo flip).

shock worked almost exclusively with the du crew with also part of the reason why he's so underrated, but those DU albums are genius in terms of their conceptualization and themes. he was always great with the keyboards.

doo woo you is my favorite shock cut.

Met him backstage after a DU show in 2000. I was in complete fanboy mode rattling off my favorite songs, naming samples he used (he was geeked to know that I knew about the Madhouse albums)...

so he signs an 8x10 and a CD booklet for me and asks...

"You want Humpty to sign it too?"

"uhh... sure?"

"Alright, lemme go get him."
