"Name one hit wonders that made albums"

In the sense that one of their songs really took off but for whatever reason nothing else seemed to stick despite it being good or great.

This being inspired by 1 person telling me how much they love Blind Melon's debut and another telling me how much they loved Dexy's Midnight Runners. Both telling me that it doesn't matter that nothing else stuck b/c the music was there and those that actually care would seek it out.

Their cover of "Jackie Wilson Said (I'm in Heaven When You Smile)" did fairly well, and "Geno" did a lot better.

Keep in mind that when "Come On Eileen" came out, it probably would not have become a hit in the U.S. if it wasn't for something new called MTV. Here was a British group that looked like bums and did a nice pop song. People wanted more of that. It might be laughable, but they had greatest hits album so U.S. wise, they were a 1-hit wonder.

I mean, if you were lucky to have "one hit", most record labels did everything in their power to have more, and that used to be in the form of an album. If you want to get more technical, how about artists who were a huge success on the R&B/Soul music chart, but had one pop hit, or at least one song that made the Top 10. Do you define one-hit wonder by the ultimate "pop hit"?

If you want to get into hip-hop, look at Sir Mix-A-Lot, Young MC, and Tone Loc as perfect examples? Up here in the Pacific Northwest, people will stop traffic if they hear "Posse On Broadway", "Square Dance Rap", "Buttermilk Biscuits", "Beepers", "Iron Man", or even "One Time's Got No Case", but he will forever be known as the "Baby Got Back" man, and he doesn't mind. I can name all of the singles off of STONE COLD RHYMIN', but most pop listeners may not realize Young MC had other hits. Same with Tone Loc.
=====

Don't mind me, I'm getting analytical for the sake of it.

Didn't Sir Mix-A-Lot had a gold album before he became a "one hit wonder"?

sidenote, I'm going to go put on Square Dance Rap, thank you.

only 'Billboard Top 40 pop' hit but then you can start wandering out into dangerous territory where you could say the same of Soundgarden with 'Black Hole Sun' or Sublime with 'What I Got'.

If you were around during that early-to-mid-90s, that album was an overall hit with at least a couple other songs (Tones of Home, Change) that were hits on that 'modern rock radio' format & probably still get run on XM Radio type of formats for that kind of music too.

The album sold well, I'm assuming at least platinum if not double.

They had a very well-received Woodstock '94 set, Shannon Hoon was always well thought of as a rock vocalist (he's the dude you see singing alongside Axl on 'Dont Cry' off Use Your Illusion), the band were in that 'jam-band'/alt/mainstream rock grouping as other groups of that era like a Blues Traveler were, their cover of 'Three's The Magic Number' has been in a bunch of movies, they had a Behind The Music episode during that show's big run, they were able to tour even when they didn't have a record out, etc.

Then their lead singer OD-d as their second record was dropping & that was it.

To me that's a bit different then real one-hit wonders like The Archies, Right Said Fred, or Afroman.

I'm pretty sure that an early 90s hip-hop fan would object to Digable Planets or De La Soul being considered a one-hit wonder, so you shouldn't be surprised if that term is bristled at by folks that love that early 90s rock either.

I'm not really a big Blind Melon fan by any means, just trying to add some perspective.

There are strong regional differences here as evidenced by the mention of Dexy's Midnight Runners. Anyway, Right Said Fred had three hits off their album in europe whereas acts like Blind Melon, Counting Crowes and Sublime are textbook one-hit wonders from *my* perspective and strictly american phenomenons (see also:John Mayer, Hootie, Dave matthews band, Phish for other examples-these acts never even had a hit here but were/are mega in america) if viewed as anything else. Of course, I know this is mostly an american site so it doesn't really matter.

Dexy's Midnight Runners was ( and still is ) a metaphor for supporting your point in The Lesson, no matter how ridiculous it might seem.

Backstory: AFKAP made a post "Dexy's Midnight Runners had Soul". We all laughed and threw eggs at him, but he laid out his points well and made a HELLUVA argument to support it. We still didn't agree with him, but he stuck to his guns and built a strong foundation for his views.

so yeah.

I played that album from front to back for eons. It gets lost in that Class of '88 shuffle, but it's definitely dope. I'm wondering if it was ever released on CD.

"Lucifer", "Drums of Steel", "Coolin in Cali"? sheeeeeeeit. that's three smokers right there.

*edit*
and I forgot "This is how i'm Livin'"...

DAMMIT I need this album, lol.
