"so....anybody heard the whole bumpy knucks and primo lp?"

i have.
i listened to it twice
it's cool
it's like what gangstarr would been with freddie
instead of guru
i think the wow factor is gone from primo beats
like, anybody can chop nowadays
and chop good
so the wtf factor is gone from his beats
oh, there are a few wtf factors present
but just not that many
imnsho

lyrically, it's cool
it's not a totally excitin' lp
but it's not totally boring either

i don't know exactly what it is it's lacking
it's something

i don't know if it's an emotional thing, a celebrity thing
it's not a skill thing
cuz they're both skilled

maybe cuz the tracks don't seem danceable?
like hype hip hop makes you want to dance
even if it's the same old two step

they don't even make you bop your head really
like, you're listenin' to see what he's doin'

but like i said, there are a few joints that capture
that old hip hop feeling from yesterday

i think that's the problem i have with primo, since
his beats for royce and ras kass

you can't really dance to them in the club
they don't really have a groove to them

life always offers you a 2nd chance...it's called tomorrow. use it wisely

I want a little more variety than he seems able (or willing) to add at this point.

But it's not wack, and Freddie Foxxx comes correct on the rhyme front. Certainly worth whatever iTunes is charging to download it.

Interesting to note that a bunch of these joints were meant for specific people. Apparently Busta rejected #2, Fat Joe rejected #4, Jadakiss rejected #6, Kanye rejected #12, and Immortal Technique rejected #5. And #3 was supposedly meant for Jay-Z which, c'mon Preem, you really thought Hov would want that?

because it reminded me of early '90s rap and some other of his older beats... but generally, I felt Premier's stuff was made more for the boom box, the PA, and the ride (the Jeep)

Dancers in the entourage, and in the videos, over uncompromising rap music. I was just thinking of the '90s, when Premier really came into prominence.

then, it felt like people stopped dancing more or less to rap music that sounded like "rap" (I mean, something that Larry Smith could have made back in the day) after about '92 or so. even Heavy started to mess around with other genres of music for a lil bit, before coming back hardcore.

or rather, the sound of rap beats started getting more violent. I think that's where Premier's ears were at. He made more "fight" music than he did danceable hip-hop. One major exception was something like "Skills", which really disappointed me when they made the video.

that was a throwback hip-hop (like damn near early '80s) sort of sounding record and then you had Guru doing thug shit on a low budget background.

I guess his remixes for Janet Jackson count too

of the "old" kind of hip-hop music. especially Comin' For Datazz, I think it's mostly because of that "Blind Alley" sample. I think the breaks they used to use factored into.

because when i first heard the few leaked songs or whatever, i was thinking "damn premo...going to use the same chop patterns/standard aesthetic for all these beats?" basically a digitally-mixed, less dynamic variation of that classic premo ish. but now that you say the second half goes, i'll give it a shot.

for real, though, i hope premo doesn't make those stop-and-go chops his foundation for championing 'real hip-hop'. some of those type of beats he's done are dope, but others...ionno, just don't knock me back like "suspended in time" or something. sometimes they don't even interest me too much, either.

or go around like the town crier over this shit, but it's an instant favorite for me, much like Blaq Poet's solo album from a couple years ago was -- and for the same reasons. I find this record a little superior to that one, even though this kind of feels like it was thrown together compared to Poet's.

my only real quibbles are the inclusion of old shit like "The Lah" and "P.A.I.N.E." -- the former is like a 10 year old 12" song that sounds out of place in this collection and the other was on Bumpy's KONEXION album from the mid '00s.

Other than that, this is some straight up Gang Starr shit. I remember El Blocko saying the whole "no 'oh shit' moments on production" about The Ownerz, and while one could argue that with that album (I disagree though), songs like "Shake The Room" and "More Levels" disprove that.

The only thing I'd ever ask of Premier for the most part was to change up his drum kits and patterns every now and then and he's done it here.

and if Jay-Z turned down "B.A.P.", it's just proving that he's too pussy to rock on a beat that slaps you in the face.

my favorite shit about this were the digs at Solar.
