"Am I the only one that thinks Pretty Toney..."

Is Ghost's 3rd best album?

Top two obvious, but Pretty Toney had a bunch of heaters!

maybe it's just cuz it came out the spring i was graduating from high school, and everything from that time, reminds me of great times..

unlike any other album pretty toney does a good job at sounding fun...beat the clock is a fun ass song, where he's talking some real shit, but the whole ghost talking to himself, please...

maybe its just me...

Fishscale has a few more fantastic tracks on it but Pretty Toney is more efficient, it got me through a lot of delivery routes last summer playing it on repeat

I've given all the other albums multiple chances and I'd rather hear Ghost over Pretty Toney beats any day.

I know that's blasphemy in the lesson.

But that's okay 'cause GFK is severely overrated here and everywhere else has 1 or 2 worthy albums max.

Everywhere else?

I'm pretty sure that the critical acclaim for "Ironman" and "Supreme Clientele" was fairly unanimous.

Bulletproof Wallets, Fishscale, Pretty Toney, all got mixed reviews.

Funnily enough, as you talk about consensus "in the real world", you picked as your favorite one of his more poorly received records.

Speaking of consensus, it's pretty much settled that Ghost is the most popular and most critically acclaimed MC in the Wu. So, how overrated could he be on OKP, when he is the best rapper in one of the top 3 rap groups of all time?

It's fine that you like "Pretty Toney" more than his "unanimous" classics. It just shouldn't surprise you that people will find that fact odd. Go into a Redman post and say that you think "Doc's Da Name" is his best LP and you will get the same reaction.

I was actually just listening to this album yesterday with my brother for the first time in ages talking about the same thing! It came out the year before I gratuated high scool and my memories are very similar to yours. I rate it slightly above Fishscale since it's more coherent as an album. The structure of Fishscale never worked to well for me, but it might have more highlights.. Anyway, both are great albums especially considering that they are not in his top two. Imagine if Bulletproof Wallets had come out the way it was intended. Ghost would have had the best 5 album run in hiphop by far. I actually found the 2lp clean radio promo version of BPW which has Good Times, The Sun + the OG versions of Flowers and The Forest on it recently. Gives you a good impression of just how great the album could have been..

yeah, ghost had a run for sure...seems like he's on autopilot now, but he's still about three levels ahead of most...

top five easy ,and bulletproof wallets may not have been the way it was designed to be, but that album still bangs in my opinion...i like the softer touch to some of those songs

No ironman?

or pretty toney?

i liked fishcale's first half a LOT, up until be easy or back like that, can't remember the last song in the line, but then the songs with all of the features, and the throwaway mf doom beats...i sorta still like underwater but other than that it just didn't have the staying power...

different tastes...ghost has been like three different artists in is career, which is actually kinda cool...

in my top 3! lol i just personally was more attached to those 3 albums
iron man i caught onto late and so i don't have the same affinity for it
as the other 3 that i bumped consistently for years after i purchased them

also just to add the big doe rehab is fucking dope too imo
ghost's catalog is really great overall
one of the few artists whose music i actually buy
only album i didn't like that much was that wonderful world of ghostdini

that's kinda why i like pretty toney so much...i had SC in high school, liked it just didn't get it until like the tenth listen in its entirety...

Pretty Toney was like the one that i was on from the jump, and truned others on to too...

i haven't really dug into big doe rehab like i always say i will, but i remember good reviews so i think that's next on the list for sure

I remember, at the time (perhaps in a haze of defending an artist I like), I rationalized that it wasn't THAT bad.

Nope, it is.

And I don't even dislike Missy.

But it's not a good song.

I also think the Theodore Unit album put out a few months later is a better album, but I also remember people here telling me to fuck off with that opinion lol.

The success of 'Cherchez La Ghost' was confusing to him but in reality it was sort of a weird fluke, he tried to repeat it with that 'Ghost Showers' bullshit on Wallets & then tried to get Missy to hook it up for his first Def Jam record here but it came off as lame/forced.

I remember watching him & Theodore Unit trying to sell that song at a 1/4-capacity (seriously) Electric Factory in Philly during the tour for this album & it just feeling awkward.

The problem with that song, though, is that it seemed more like Ne-Yo ft. Ghostface than vice versa, even with his multiple verses. It definitely did more for Ne-Yo than Ghost, but it's not a bad song by any means.

and the fact that Ghost put two versions of what's essentially a Ne-Yo cut on successive albums tells you about the kind of single drought he's been in.

And 'Back Like That' was sort of an attempt at 'Never Be The Same Again' (not a bad song really either but not sticking in folks' mind either) with a new labelmate.

Loved Pretty Toney when it came out, but Ghost has been a bit 'off' for me ever since Fishscale. I think it's the mixing of his vocals that makes his stuff from 06 onwards harder to listen to.

the backlash as the album quickly faded from memory.

That was when DL leaks were quickly becoming the norm, that album was getting slobbered over in here in those early posts.

I even remember cats who weren't really Ghost fans prior (like Geah/Stacey Adams) touting this album as the one that finally sold them on dude.

But the hype goeth before the fall, once that album came out & didn't have much staying power amongst that year's rap climate (with Madvillian having more traction in the underground & College Dropout owning the popular vote that year) folks began to shit on this album before mostly forgetting about it by the end of 2004.

I was ALL ABOUT the original, more "weird" configuration of Theodore, namely Superb and Solomon Childs. When they didn't pop up that heavy on "Pretty Toney", I was disappointed. This album to me was the last remnants of that vibe, i.e. "Biscuits", "Kunta Fly Shit", "Last Night". But it felt more straightforward, especially coming off of "Wallets", which was like Wu-Tang meets Ultramag to me, in some weird kind of way. "Fishscale" felt like an officially released Ghostface street album to me, like a mixtape with a WHOLE lot of tracks stacked on to it. I dunno, I wanted at least 8 more albums from the "We Made It", "The Juks" version of Ghost + Theodore

... Charter member, but I don't post much. LAZERS.

When Ghost was with Superb he had an energy that was just hard to match. Songs like "The Juks" and "We Made It" are my favorite moments of Ghost gon wild (honorable mention for joints like Apollo Kids). It's a shame that they fell out and I believe Superb when he says Ghost was taking his shit. I don't know if Ghost actually took bars from dude but he definitely took his energy. I like Trife Da God but Purb was that dude.

That was the last Ghostface album I truly rocked the shit out of.
I vaguely remember folk throwing shade on that album on the boards
and thinking they were crazy. Now you're gonna make me go pull
that album out.
