it depends on what kind of career he's really set to do. I figure it might mirror the whole Patrick Stump saga; I'm intrigued by unlikely "heroes" of music... those who come in the door doing one thing, break from their comfortable setting and become more substantial as the years go on. I think Mandy Moore was actually on that path for a minute, but... ahem.

I think he has a good a chance as any considering he's shown the interest in things that are not so trendy.

This is what I will say...

MJ's vocals were otherworldly as a young kid and as a teen...He was singing some of the soul greats of that time under a table....His stage game was vastly better than Bieber's, too...So no...he wasn't on Mike's level in that regard...

BUT....

The one big difference between them at their respective career points is Bieber can actually play instruments...For his age, he's pretty good on drums and can play an actual tune on guitar...In this day and age, that's an aberration....

What does this all mean? Nothing, if Bieber doesn't have the right material...But if you judge him on the same path as say Justin Timberlake, then he does have a chance to extend his career if he has the right people around him...

FIRST of all, even as a kid, Mike Jax made records that appealed to grownups. ( Granted the J5 was a bubblegum act...).

Second, he grew up with his music. When he became a teenager, he stretched out and sang more ballads, and more age appropriate material. He wasn't still making "kids" music,

Most singer that became a household name could already sing their ass off at the age of 16, not to mention 18.

But I agree, the he is talented. Im sure I'll be able to appreciate some of this songs in the future and I wouldn't be surprised if he had a long career but MJ level ? NO. Times have changed, I think the whole "legend period" is past now, we won't be seing any other MJ soon.

Dude will not reach that level at all, and he'll be usher+timberlake status and maybe a little above that.

1. no where near the talent of michael

2. different time, Mike came up and grew up with his audience through advancements in music and television, creates a different feeling. and no, it's not the same as people seeing advancements today because we already expect the new things we see to happen, we're spoiled.

3. fans today are too blase, i know son is like #3 on twitter or some shit but something about the internet just seems off to me, i know that's representative of how many people like said artist but there's no nielsen for that shit, how many people are actually paying attention after they follow, friend, add or whatever. Also, it just makes it too easy to be a fan, yeah it's there at your disposal but if we didn't have all this social networking going on i think other numbers would go up in contrast.

He'll be big, and correct me if i'm wrong, but he doesn't seem to have ANY peers, like, there is no other young man out there doing it like him, and i don't know if that should be props to him or not lol

im rambling, all im saying is that technology has made people fickle and it's hard to predict whether his audience will grow up with him and keep digging his work.

Every move MJ made, from the time he debuted with J5 as a kid to the day he kissed the world goodbye, was felt and dissected EVERYWHERE by EVERYONE.

Bieber is big with his crowd. Not the world over. The vast majority of people couldn't even name you a Bieber song let alone follow his every move.

Bieber is a media sensation. MJ was (and still is) an institution.

The age of the superstar is over.

She's almost like toothpaste, in that every few months, she's "new and improved" but it's the same ol' Gaga toothpaste.

Will Bieber do it? That's up to him. He's 18, this year is the 30th anniversary of THRILLER so I'm sure the media will say "is this the new uprising?" I'd like to think that by him being Canadian, he will have a different perception of things and try to hesitate from going overboard. I hope for his sake, he does. Look at Justin Timberlake, he could be the monarch but he steps away and does movies, people want him to be a member of SNL, he is calculating his work and perception, and it's working. Bieber could do the same if he gets a bit of guidance by those who will help him.

Things are different today, in that it will be up to fans who will decide if they want to keep him grounded or push him to the point of no return, like MJ. I hope for him and his fans, they will keep him in check.

Hope he has some heat on his new album, but as people here have said, he's not being pushed to turn in a "Don't stop til you get enough" or even a Timberlake "Like I Love You".

no that's not fair to Michael, Justin can't do what Michael could.

I feel like Justin hasn't been challenged by the musicians and producers hes worked with. Not in the idea that he's too talented for them, but he's not being pushed in any artistic direction. You can tell that because dude seems to be content rapping ghost written raps and making swag rap instead of making some honest music.

I think that if someone like Pharrell would get up off their ass and grab hold of kid, if there could just be someone with time in the game that knows how to make the kind of records that can be ubiquitous, Justin might be able to push himself and want to make some innovative music. He's got talent, hes the most marketable musician on the planet, people would LOVE to see him succeed and start making pop music that older folks/high brows can respect, but he's not being challenged by anyone around him. In my mind, hes content with making the music hes making now. I feel with age he'll be forced to switch this up though.

michael jackson the entity was a result of so many PERFECT storms, not the least of which being that he was a genius level performer AND vocalist. the recording industry was different, people's investment and response to music was different, label commitment to their artists was different, the political/world scene was dramatically different, and ripe for a global star during Mike's ascension, and comparatively speaking - justin bieber is way behind the eight ball. MJ had a decade in the game by Justin Bieber's age.

it's just not really possible anymore, and that's excluding MJ's talent, which on it's own i believe is the easier portion of the MJ equation to duplicate. and that's saying something.

Its a different time, Michael was around when TV and radio where extremely important and music was not disposable as it is now.
