But this is all fairly consistent with the girl who made her first American TV appearance on the Grammys with a PE logo painted on the side of her shaved head & documented a UK Trayvon incident in the 80s with a song called 'Black Boys On Mopeds' on her biggest album.
She's not really coming from the American white-liberal/paternalistic perspective we might be accustomed, she's coming from the perspective of an Irish Bipolar Priestess who dabbles in Rastafarianism & who has consistently railed against the white male corporate power structure (while at the same time aligning herself with black artists & causes) since she first stepped on the scene.
Knowing a bit about her life, upbringing, & career I give her a wider birth on some of this stuff than others because I know it's coming from a good place.

ten years before the majority of people even acknowledged there was an issue.
She got loudly booed at the Bob Dylan 30th Anniversary tribute (same week Frank Sinatra threatened to kick her ass) upon introduction because she had blasted the first Bush Administration over Iraq (ironic considering the crowd was there to pay respects to the author of 'Masters Of War') so she stopped the band from playing then switched on the spot to singing Bob Marley's 'War' a capella for three minutes while being booed by a sold-out MSG before walking off the stage.

I know somebody on this board bristled the last time I mentioned that here but I enjoyed hearing her voice in that context, she also didn't pick that many of the go-to reggae cuts outside of maybe 'Marcus Garvey' or 'Downpressor Man'.
You can tell that project was born out of love/mutual respect & shared appreciation for music.

is probably the best place to start.
Either there or Lion & The Cobra (her debut) but I'd say the second one takes the best elements from the debut and improves upon them while adding a few new wrinkles.
That was the album that made her a major star for a brief time before she began a campaign of career suicide over the course of the next couple years afterwards.

out of one side of her mouth she said she "adores it" (page 2) then out of the other side she says:

that sounds pretty broad brush and damning to me.
You can say how "great" she is and all the things did back in the day, but lets not ignore what she actually said HERE

let's look at the quote

the "it" is rap music, you know this because of the context. The preceding sentence says:
"Don't be guided by rap. Gangsta or otherwise. Sure.. enjoy it.. adore itas I do.. but realize this.. rap ain't about your civil or spiritual rights, baby boys and girls."
What else could the "it" be? And note she didn't quantify. She EXPLICITLY said "Gangsta or otherwise"
when she gets to "Rap ain't about your civil or spiritual rights" she's talking about all of it there too.
Next - just in case you missed it in the previous sentence she casting the net wider rather than reducing it to "some" rap

Followed by her explanation of what rap (her word) is about:
It.. along with most music nowadays.. is about falsenesses and vanities. Bling, drugs, sex, guns and people- dissing.
After the list she summarizes the affect of it:
"Its giving you the message you ain't 'good enough' if you don't have bling and ting.. and money. Or if you're not what it deems 'sexy'. (This is true of all popular music not rap alone. I know. Its tragically true of all popular youth culture the world over)."
The ONLY hedge is throwing in "popular" but that contradicts the previous.
If you can't see that, at best, she is sloppy then I can't call it
