"De La Soul albums rank em"

I'm not too familiar with their post 2000 stuff, except for a few songs here and there. Anyway, the Picnic got me to thinking about De La, I'm sure this has been done before in the lesson, but give us your favorite albums in order.

“So back we go to these questions — friendship, character… ethics.”

I agree (except for pot holes lol) the lp is seriously dated and way to quirky for my tastes now but it doesnt diminish its place in history IMO

that being said the best lp is De la soul is dead. from the lp cover imagery, to what De la faced as a result of the soft, hippie image. This lp knocked hip hop out the box and was every bit as creative and funny as 3 feet but it wasnt as silly

Again, they have no *bad* albums. It's just I felt like (even for a group who had albums with 25+ songs) the AOIs had too many tracks/too much filler. Get both them down to like, 12-14 tracks and they might move up that list.

so this is how I rank 'em:

1. De La Soul Is Dead
2. 3 Ft High and Rising
3. Stakes Is High
4. Buhloone Mind State
5. The Grind Date
6. AOI: Mosaic Thump
7. AOI: Bionix

none of those are bad albums to me, and I'm tempted to move Grind Date to the 4-slot.

Buhloone was a disappointment to me the same way BR&L is to a lot of people who liked Tribe, but weren't Tribe loyalists. Shit kinda sounded like "college student" music compared to the epic assholia and beats that was De La Soul Is Dead. I loved "Breakadawn" but the rhymes on that album were hard to follow. They were super esoteric on that one, IMO. and that whole interlude with the Japanese rapper? What was that shit about? I wasn't in college when that tape dropped but I felt like I had done my rounds through lecture rooms and the dorms when I heard it.

Let me say that Bionix was not a bad album at all. "Pawn Star" is a bad song... and unfortunately it colored the opinion of that album a little too darkly.

U know what? This might be the best explanation to the vibe of this album, were'nt they at college age around this time anyway?

This is exactly how I feel...

Buhloone Mindstate felt like an album where there went to the abstract well one too many times. To me, it sounded like the last album on a 3 album deal. De La went extra left field with that album and it sounded like the were giving a middle finger to the label, Prince Paul, the listener or all 3. It had a "we can say anything and make it sound fresh" vibe to it.

The Stakes is High Intro put an end to that crazy word play.

2. Dead (most creative, but imo, the skits hold about as much weight as the songs).
3. Stakes (particularly the second half of the album).
4. 3 Ft (sorry...more creative and "fun" than the later albums, but lacking in the sense of beats and rhymes imo).
5. Grind.
6. Impossible.
7. Mosaic.
8. Bionix (Even though "Trying People" is one of their best joints...honorable mention to "Held Down")

but I'm glad you brought up Held Down. That joint still gives me chills to this day. I was always surprised that this track was never a "HOLY SHIT" track among more De La fans. Always thought it was amazing, but heard very little noise about it.

I'm wondering how many people were listening to hip hop when 3ft High dropped.

I can't see how anyone could put Mindstate ahead of their first 2 joints unless it was the first De La album they heard.

I have all their albums and I've tried to listen to Mindstate straight through tons of times and I can't... I have to skip a few songs and put on a different De La album. Something about that album rubs me the wrong way.
