"Wynton Marsalis the Negro you love to Hate?"

yeah a cat with his musical background and he is a tradionalist

he makes no apologys about it and tells you what is wrong with pop music and other artists.

this dude is scary Prolific and productive and has been very successful.

i tend to dig his classical stuff over his jazz stuff however this cat been doing music for ages it seems and does it his way regardless of what anyone thinks.

if it wasn't for his Bill Cosbesque take on Music would you love and appreciate his talent even more or does he just put you off with his takes?

is this cat your parents music, grandparents music uncle and aunt or your music? which bag does he exactly fall in and why?

what did you think of his last album with Willie Nelson?

you can get lost in all of those layers of harmonies.

of course, i hated everything he's ever had to say about funk and soul music.
he should never discuss it.

Ol' "I shine ya shoe boss if I gits a darkie ta shine mine" turkey got NO hits!!!
Where's his "Take the A Train"?
Where's his "Giant Steps"?
Where's his "So What"?

Shit Kenny G got more hits than Wynton Marsadshit.
Kenny G!!

Only thing this fool got right was landing himself at Lincoln Center, but somehow his, "why don't I make jazz fit right in with yo big picture boss" ass convinced them fools to let him play jazz there. Need to be second trumpet in the latest production of the Nutcracker where his light in the let me immitate so I sound great ass can get in where he fit in.

Name Wynton "Everybody knows my brother and my pops are the better" Marselis' classic. Closest you'll prolly come up with is some shit he dedicated to his pops. Shit I'd rather listen to Spike Lee pick up a horn and play with his pops. At least with Spike I wouldn't know what to expect.

while i find his opinions on rap music in particular to be ultimately demeaning--as he seems to grudgingly concede its validity as an art form--he does address larger issues of what specific brands of music/image are being sold to the american public by entrenched business and why. i'm good with that.

i enjoy what music of his that i do have.

i don't agree with his narrow definition of jazz.

i enjoyed his stuff with Kathleen battle back in the day.

his jazz stuff is hit and miss with me, however the cat is very detail and knows his stuff, problem for me is he never stretches out and is too conservative as a Musician.

Branford moved me more of the Brothers, still Wynton is the standard though because he can do things and he knows his lane.

musically he makes some valid points however i wonder what a Wynton in a fusion and totaly left field sounding background would be like?

One of the best trumpet players in the world...
But, some of you are right...he doesn't have a great jazz hit. His music doesn't move me like Miles Davis and Freddie Hubbard. But, technically speaking, his technique is impeccable. His flawless sound, fast scales, and clear tone can't be unrecognized. Moving from classical to jazz effortlessly...can play 20's traditional jazz to 60's "free bop". Dude is serious and is very talented.

But...he is lacking that "soul" that most of my jazz favorites have. I own a bunch of his albums, but they only got 1 or 2 plays.

He is great live tho. He plays with a lot of energy and knows how to put on a good jazz show.

I don't care about his attitude or arrogance....compared to some of these assholes in the rap game who say stupid shit and can't back it up with their musical talent bothers me more.

>>>"is this cat your parents music, grandparents music uncle and aunt or your music? which bag does he exactly fall in and why?"

Because its jazz...I guess I would say my parents and grandparents music because jazz is from their generation... But he is carrying the torch for jazz today, and I grew up listening to him in the 80's..so it's just as much my generations music too.

We can't ignor his contributions to music education. He is known to be a great teacher...and this guy really knows his music history and theory. On top of all his playing, he always takes time to contribute to the music education world, and he really cares about educating the youth.

someone who is a national treasure as far as I'm concerned....

no one has been more resolute in keeping jazz alive and making it accessible to new generations than he has.

I know many within the HipHop community have issues w/him and his tough stance on the music

but

there is a lot of undeniable truth in his criticisms abt HipHop.

I've always enjoyed all of music. My favs are "Black Codes from the Underground" and "Blood on the Fields"

haven't heard all of the cd he did w/Willie Nelson but what I have heard I liked

he always said his brother was the better musician of the two because he had more discipline which is something that's required to be a good trumpet player

I hate how he got suckered into the jazz critics mind game, when they billed him against Miles Davis and all of those jazz artists who went electric.

Namely Stanley "The Grouch" Crouch, who had an agenda that surpassed showing a newbie some support. I think they did him a deservice by billing him against those musicians, and he was stupid for feeding into it.

Other than that, I have no quarrels with Mr.Marsalis.

he reminds me of most musicians who come from money - financing, the best teachers, produce great technique - but sometimes that's all they emphasize.

His belief system is that jazz cannot live anymore - that in truth, it's an artform that should only be studided cause of the standards and tha there is nothing left to write. Those are his beliefs - I personally would love to hear Miles take on that cause Miles didn't like his ass really.

Who remembers when Miles kicked him off the stage.

He's arrogant and quite honestly covering standards - even though his bands are always tight - just doesn't move me.

Although his Village Vanguard sessions stay in rotation.

I LOVE Miles... just love everything about that cat.

Down to calling this dude out for being a prop of the white music establishment. He's all about selling their belief system and their acadamia bullshit. I mean mind you - if he accepted all of it I think critics and fans would be easier on him but he's all about shitting on free jazz, electric jazz - saying it's not even music that only the standards are real jazz. That dude man.

Mind you yes he played Flight of the Bumblebee on Trumpet which got him noticed and blew many peoples minds cause he did it in it's actual tempo - from what i understand it had never been done on trumpet before. Okay... and?

haha.
