I wholeheartedly agree. I couldn't quite figure out why some of Tyler's verses rub me the wrong way but I understand now. Dude is at his best when he just spits whatever, not trying to comment on some gossipy nonsense or explicitly state how OF is different from everyone. OF is different by just being themselves (and at the same time, as you said, falling in line with the tradition of big groups like the Hieroglyphics, Wu-Tang, etc.
> >c) Earl Sweatshirt is amazing. As in, the hype is worth it, >he's a wunderkind, the next shit. He's also waaay ahead >of everyone else in terms of perspective and persona...he >...genuinely seems like a different type of nigga...I don't >see him fucking with this foolishness much longer.
Yup , undeniable. Let him make a solo album on which he can REALLY be introspective and craft rhymes of beats of his choosing; shit, he'll gets all of hip-hop's attention.
>d) I like Hodgy's verse. I think he's awful 75% of the time >but he might be a Kanye West type rapper who improves with >time and effort....he seems to CARE about rapping...the same >way Kanye CARED about being a good rapper.
As much as I've tried, I can't get down with Hodgy. It's like, on some songs he tries to sound angry or tough, as if he's emulating Tyler. Other times he tries to sound smart and witty but he's neither of those, and as a result he comes off as unintentionally funny. How he got so many great beats on his EP is beyond me. But do agree with your point about his caring about rap cause he's is seems like, more and more, he puts plenty of effort into each verse.
> >e) Pleasant surprise: Mike G. I actually liked the production >on 'Ali' a lot...I just thought he was in over his head >lyrically. He wasn't really nice enough to ride on most of >those beats, which were outstanding (that was apparent on >that song with Vince Staples....Staples is actually a good >rapper, and G was sorta not). >
Never really checked for dude but his verses on OF Vol. 2 were one of the best on the album. I can see him creating a modest career for himself if he stays focused. I can see him, Tyler, Domo, Hodgy, and of course Earl, having lengthy solo careers, esp. Tyler and Earl.
