"Name an Artist you loved until they blew up and then you hated them."

For me, top of the list is 50 cent. I loved when he was the rap underdog who took shots at everyone (how to rob). Once he blew up the very same tough talk and bravado just seemed as unnecessary gloating.

I think rappers in general who built there career on their outsider, underdog, poor status don't have anywhere to go once they become the Man. See also Eminem.

Any other examples of people you championed until they blew up and then you despised them? In and outside of Hip-hop?

I think OKP should have a ton since so much of this sites identity is built on being early adopters of trends outside the mainstream.

I've been fuckin with them since "Parachutes"...got all their albums and whatnot, but I dunno...just seems like Chris and Johnny stopped writing and they just make "songs" to fill up the album.

Loved mixtape about nothing. Thought it was clever and executed very well. His first album was terrible and the second just makes it clear that he's trying to be famous. I'm okay with my favorite artists becoming popular, but Wale is trying so hard with radio friendly cliche songs that I can't stand it

... Attention Deficit left a bad taste for me. I ain't even check for Ambition. Mixtape About Nothing & even Back to the Feature got heavy burn, but not much after that. I feel he fell victim to the label creative pressures.

sure it had 2-3 real clunkers but i think he covered a wide range of topics and executed them pretty effortlessly to balance that conscious but radio appeal type rapper.

ambition on the other hand was about as one dimensional as they come.

"Pretty Girls" I think it was was basically a remake of one of his old songs.

but Wale is a good example of the mixtape versus album divide.

That was much closer to his mixtape style than people act. He had some deep ones on there. Really only the production was vastly different (way more pop).

I still agree that Mixtape About Nothing is his best, but that to me is almost accidental/the product of hunger. Like Lil' Wayne pre-hype when he was just trying his ass off on tapes and it worked.

As for modern day MMG Wale....yeah I can't ride with it either. Seems very put on.

I'm honestly inclined to think it's less his label and more BOB's shitty taste in rock and pop. He's always had hints of that on his tapes, but once he got signed he seemed to really follow that side.

He still raps well, even on his lame radio songs, it's just the production/singers/rock influences he has are fucking terrible.

that tape showed a TON of promise, but everything after got worse and worse

May 25th was a slight upswing, but then the album dropped

What's sad is that it took me forever to realize the verses on Airplanes are actually dope, I just don't want to listen to that song on my own or request someone to play it for me

- albums 1-3 were cool and gritty and minimalist, album #4 gets all melodic and orchestral-> and album #4 is what blows them up.

- the one song on the album that sounds nothing like the rest of their material...is the one that blows up, and now they make all of their new music based on the anomaly.

Man, their first two albums got worn-the-fuck-out. I put everybody I could on to them.

Third album, you start to see the 'stadium rock' sound emerging.

Fourth album, everything goes to hell.

I loved "Soul Food" and "Still Standing." "World Party" was a disappointment.

I couldn't get into "...Imperfect Imperfections" or "Soul Machine." And once he did the Gnarls Barkley stuff, it was over. I don't like anything he's done as a solo artist.

But I think I understand why he's doing it.

Came in here to say that. Favorite rapper of all time. I didn't mind his solo albums or his Gnarls Barkley stuff, but the last album was definitely the moment I stopped checking for him. I have no idea what a Goodie Mob reunion album will sound like.

he used to be the guy that always said the right thing.

once he became the guy that people that read people magazine talked about,
he became intolerable.

which is not to say that i loved his music less.
but it made it hard to seperate the art from the artist...
which is something that i'm NORMALLY pretty good at doing.

but yeah.

it got to the point
where i wanted to send him a letter
to beg him to not express himself in interviews.

his songs get his point across so much better.

his first mixtape was banging...he was killing the flows but not being overly corny and white wit it.

Then Low blew the fuck up aand he said fuck this let me get this check these niggaz.

he just start doing that fast flow gibberish and over pop beats.

I understand but dude had potential on that first mixtape that he could make good songs.

I never check his albums so I don't know if he has some sleepers on them cause the singles just be straight bs.

Don't hate him or anything, but when I first heard Ghetto Pop Life I thought he had a really nice sound that I could see blowing up. I do really like his work on the second Gorillaz album, and at the time I liked the first Gnarls Barkley album, but nowadays I just think of him as a producer that's brought in to remove the rough edges from an artist's work. Dangermouse project = instant apathy from me.

you're referring to?

If so, I agree. What a jam. PRIMOOOOO

And yea...I got his other albums since MvM and never really listened to them. Huge disappointment for sure, he was/is mega talented and was really fun to listen to and follow. I remember watching his antics from clips of the Up In Smoke tour and was like "I NEED to party with that guy". I just wish that along with fame came a hunger to remain the same quality MC with the same quality music he made up through Restless.

Yeah. X came out with a great song. But when he started making more "stereotypical" music it kinda sucked.

But he's absolutely hilarious on Pimp My Ride, which will probably end up what he's most remembered for.

I didn't have a problem at all with that show. I just had a problem with the music he put out after becoming more popular.

Guy has a ton of charisma so his capitalization of that is of no issue to me and in fact, I love it. I just wish he kept the quality of his music consistent with his first 3 efforts, which were ALL excellent.

I got into them around Rubber Factory and liked them a lot. They were like The White Stripes (At the time) except dirtier and better drumming. Tried to put so many ppl on them but I guess they were too uncommercial for ppl. They put out good albums for a few years then Danger Mouse came along. They do Attack & Release which was cool and Blakroc was at least worth the experimentation. But Brothers came out and everyone went nuts, saying AOTY right off the bat. I liked it but kinda disappointed that they lost their sound. They became way less bluesy and softer. Kinda hit me with surprise that they would get this big (Kinda figured they'd float under the commercial radar and be a cult act) but I guess it makes.

I feel like they peaked with Attack & Release. Rubber Factory was their best. The Big Come Up and ThickFreakNess were their exploratory phase albums. The Auerbach solo was a good one as well. Still haven't heard Camino... and I think the Black Keys' biggest problem is that listeners like me have no urge to seek that album out.

they didn't lose "their sound" they just did a deep in the groove soul-rock album. it wasn't suppose to be Blues. this is the order i place their albums

1. Chulahoma (don't care that it's an EP or covers. just their best shit period)
2. Attack & Release
3. Thickfreakness
4. Brothers
5. Magic Potion (which i loved when it dropped, but sounds kind of dry now)
6. The Big Come up
7. El Camino (really only like 3 songs on it. it's just too damn poppy)
-i still haven't heard Rubber Factory

and sort of following his guest appearances and the like up until "Dead Presidents" came out, I was disappointed by/really disillusioned by the "Big Willie" crap in his video. The actual album tempered things, much like actually hearing Biggie's album did for me.

though I can't ever say I "hated" him because he at least had 2-3 or more songs an album I liked I disliked what kind of music MADE him really become a superstar.

I think that '94-'97 was the first time you heard rap singles and got the wrong idea about what the album would be like for the best in the genre.

original flava (which was the rap group that producer ski beatz was in)
i actually stole that single from sam goody 'cause i loved the song so much and jay's verse was actually my least favorite (although i didn't find it wack) lol
for a LONG time i associated him with that song on some 'ohshit that's the guy from the original flava video' lol

jayz has been a pretty popular artist since 'aint no nigga'
but imo he didn't blow up into the stratosphere he's in now until
the blue print
barring the incredible project that is american gangster
i've pretty much disliked all of his albums post the blue print and i didn't love that album either.

my mind automatically associated 'blowing up' with his current status in hip hop.

he was never the dopest rapper but he stayed in his lane and always had a good ear for beats. with Rolling Papers he veered way off course trying to pander to the general populace

starting to hate Kano. i thought Home Sweet Home was damn near genius but with every subsequent release i find myself more and more disappointed by how rote the raps and music are.

pretty much done with Wale. i checked out after More About Nothing. sometimes i cant even listen to the old stuff bc the new music blows me so much

wiz is kind of weird because he fits this multiple times.

when he first came out (& was getting a ton of love on OKP through reviews) he was on that kind of soulful underground tip. It's funny because the majority of his fans have noooooooooooo clue about this phase. Show & Prove & Prince of the City were dope to me. this was 05-07ish
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b9gypvoDNrM (Pittsburgh Sound)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ejRzg-x6yIM (What It Used To Be w/Nicolay)

hell, his wikipedia page seems to completely ignore this phase.

but then in 08 he switched up into what imo was his worst phase with the Say Yeah debacle & move towards a more mainstream sound. Grow Season, Prince of the City II, & Star Power were all pretty bad to me.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=82kGsIzcWp4&ob=av2e

And then in 09 he drops Flight School, Deal or No Deal, How Fly (w/Curen$y) & Burn After Rolling. He switched his style up & became a "weed rapper". He definitely jumped on the Curren$y bandwagon but at that point I figured he'd be bigger since he seems more marketable. This phase was cool albeit completely different than his early stuff. Then he drops Kush & OJ whis is easily his biggest project & he jumps into the "major underground" status where he has a huge following w/o support from traditional mainstream folks (like Atmosphere, Tech N9ne, etc.).

Of course this buzz gets the majors biting & he comes out with "Black & Yellow" (produced by big time pop producers) & drops "Rolling Papers" which is still in the vein of his weed rap but waaaaaaay more pop. I thought it was garbage but it gave him more visibility.

After that he's come out with some good music & done very well touring & Taylor Allderdice pretty much went back to his pre Rolling Papers sound. My hunch is that he's comfortable in this lane as a weed rapping popstar & he'll go back & forth between dropping mixtapes that appease Kush & OJ fans while dropping albums more pop leaning.

not because they blew up, but because i didn't care for the music they put out after they blew up. in wu-tangs case, i guess i just like the older gritty beats.

Not that you got indifferent after awhile. That list would be too long to name (I'd include Prince, Common, Mos...)

This post is about they reached a point where you actively hated them after they reached a certain level of success.

74. "Common"
In response to Reply # 0

hate is a strong word. but my complete indifference to borderline embarrassment toward Common is a stark contrast to only a few years before when he was in my top 3 MC's.

BE is the album where he really broke through into commercial territory. I like BE, its a good album, but its the beginning of the end, and he sort of blew up after that album. His blowing up is sort of odd to me because its more because of features and acting than because of any one of his albums. Nevertheless, the Like Water For Chocolate Common is long gone. I was cool with him experimenting (even though I hated Electric Circus) but I just can't take him seriously any more, even though people say this new album is cool. I just can't bare him now.
Again, I don't hate him at all, but I just stopped caring entirely. That's fine. He has enough dope shit from the past that I'll cherish forever.

John Mayer, though I loved Continuum. But I think he put one out after that I never heard?

Lil' Wayne in a lot of ways, though I'd been paying attention long enough to know that Drought/Carter 3 was going to be some sort of high level mark and the curve was about to head back downward.

I don't despise the Decemberists but I really only care about their first three albums.

I had my most fickle moment when I turned on Dashboard Confessional as a kid. It was almost instantaneous, and definitely because I found out almost everyone else at school liked them.

Maroon 5 was my little secret and I loved their first album, the rest can bite me.

None of these artists though I hate. I find it really hard to care that much. I'd listen if something grabbed me.
