ive listened to danny for a few eyars but this is the first full project from him i checked out. his accents/voices he uses for the first few tracks kinda annoy me. the production is kinda average for about half the album (the other half being quite good), but his lyrics are on point.
but after listeneing to it a few times it really grew on me, and there are some really great songs on the album.
I didn't like the beats past the first few. The raps are repeditive except for a few towards the end and I'm sorry but his weird voice he does is annoying. Honestly most people here love it and I usually don't comment on something I don't like but you asked. I gave that joint a full listen about 4-5 times now (because every time it comes up people hype it so much I give it another try) but every time I delete it from my playlist.
We just gon' have to agree to disagree on that one.

I don't like his rapping the voice is just the thing that pushes it over the top. I really couldn't say there is just one thing that makes me not like it. His whole product (speaking about XXX specifically and not him in general) is like reverse gestalt, the sum of all the parts (beats, subject matter, wordplay, style, content) comes together to produce something worse than any of the parts by themselves.

You use double standards on voices. You just invented a reason to not like Danny Brown's but you like guys with equally nasal and annoying deliveries.

search, there is a thread. It seems like most folks like or love it. whenever it came up, I was stanin'. without a doubt my favorite album of last year, no fret calling it a contemporary masterpiece. i can understand the voice being an "acquired taste", but then again heads who make that argument aren't really listening as he moves through 3-4 different tones/vocal pitches within songs or track to track.

Not all weird voices are the same. Do you honestly believe he sounds like any of those artists? Do you think droopy dog sounds just like goofy. Please don't take offense, I mean none I'm just saying some voice /style decisions are more annoying than others, some even make the music better.

this is all I had time for complaining about in the review:
"But if there's one thing working against XXX in comparison to Brown's coming out party, last year's bandcamp release The Hybrid, it's the consistently darker atmosphere throughout XXX. Gone are the drug-rap diversions like "Re-Up" and "Shootin' Moves", and songs that are more calm and lifestyle based like "Nowhere 2 Go" and "I'm Out" are nowhere to be found. XXX is also more personal, as Danny doesn't spend much time addressing the problems of others as he did on the previous album."
for folks that are kind of, like, ehhhhh on trying him, I'd actually recommend going with that random ass Tony Yayo collab Hawaiian Snow. None of his best songs are on there but it's pretty much all traditional tunes due to Yayo's involvement, and both of them are hilariously weird gangsters on that one. Sample:
did you listen to Scrap or Die, EWNESW, Fields or DNA? those are exactly in the vein of "Nowhere 2 Go" and "I'm Out"
and the drug sellin' tracks were gone because he was removed from that element while writing XXX. as he's said in interviews, he's gone from selling to fund his rap music to at times using while making his rap music

which are probably my two favorite Danny Brown songs, and I'm also talking about the vibe. "Fields" for example is still very claustrophobic and psychedelic, so is EWNESW although it has a slightly more positive feel to it. "I'm Out" was just Danny goofing around over a really spare, headnodder beat. For me "Radio Song" is about all that fills that; XXX doesn't go to the same lengths as Hybrid did to balance out his impulses, though I get that was the point. It was just the one main complaint I had about the album as a result, being a fan of stuff like Hawaiian Snow and Hot Soup.

I'm glad of that.
As much as I love Hot Soup, it's not The Hybrid just as that LP is not XXX. He's grown a lot but EVERY LP he drops a "socially concious" song and does his entire range of style/voices. There's no flow or style he can't do and rap is the least of his worries. The beats on XXX fit where he is -- now. I expect him to go into another lane on his next project.

Great live show, Section 80 was the best project of 2011, other TDE-related artists (Schoolboy Q in particular with the record he put out a couple months back) are following in his footsteps & there's an attention-to-detail/cohesion in their full-lengths that reminds me of earlier legendarily crews but still sounds fresh/relevant to this current era.

I will say there were a few rap albums last year (Section 80, XXX, Watch The Throne, Covert Coup, Shaolin vs Wu-Tang, Book Of David) that I liked a lot. I'm probably forgetting more than a few as well, 2011 was a pretty damn good year even by my curmudgeonly standards.
