"2 MC's that i've felt were underrated - Wise Intelligent and Boots"
Even when both groups were at their prime and/or relevant, I don't think HEADS, gave these mc's their props.
It's understandable that the sometime-y rap fan, kinda person that only buys shit cause their homeboys are into it, wouldn't like them that much. Same people didn't fuck with Hiero, Saafir, LONS, and lots of other groups that didn't have lots of hits on black radio.
But heads? People that hunted down Mic Geronimo's Unstoppable? Cats that have that Urban Thermo Dynamics 12"?
Consider how much love Ras Kass got when you think about Wise Intelligent and Boots.
Ras Kass could do no wrong for a minute. PPL was apologizing for that Dre shit. Prolly some of y'all want the west Coast Avengers to still happen.
But Wise? Boots?
The argument against Wise, was that he did too much chatting (that Jamaican stuff for you yardies)
The argument against Boots is that they never had a real hit and they're from the West coast.
Consider this an appreciation post, but also a discussion and celebration post.

Stupid story I remember for some reason: back in my days of posting at Davey D's message forum someone was trolling the board by posting messages with "BOOTS FROM THE COUP HAS TIES TO COMMUNIST ORGANIZATIONS!!" in the subject.

both are rappers I personally have over looked for the very type of rappers you listed. outside their early 90s singles i haven't paid their music much mind

and it's quite spectacular.
i was kinda young when poor righteous teachers was doing their thing so i didn't really appreciate them until adult hood but i'd been following wise intelligent's solo career since the early '00s one of my favorite emcees without question.
i have the privilege of being featured on a song with him soon. still writing my verse gotta record it and send it out.

lol
edit: as far as the coup i haven't really listened to their shit. i think i owe them a fair listen. the few songs i've heard were good.
7. "I love the Coup on paper/in theory..." In response to Reply # 0
...However, I never listen to them. I bought all the Coup albums up until the third one around the time they were released and I listened to them and felt they were great with cool beats and GREAT lyrics (I'm a swede so of course I appreciate socialism; by american standards, if you are a moderate socialist with humanist values, your'e a commie it seems). Especially that song on "Steal this album", "Me and jesus the pimp...", it's the most powerful lyrics I've heard on a Hip-Hop song I think, just an amazingly written song lyrically.
However, I never return to their albums for some reason. Maybe the lyrics are too ''definitive'' and straight to hold up to repeated listenings and the beats-while enjoyable-not my thing.
As for Wise Intelligent/PRT, I love the shit out of their albums and still play them but as an MC, he never really stood out to me, maybe because I can't relate to the message and why *his* approach to it is different than others. There *are* some differences IMO but I can't really speak on that beyond flow and stuff without sounding like an asshole so I rather not...
14. "'Wear Clean Drawls" is low key one of the best songs ever" In response to Reply # 7
Boots killed it on some irony/comedy but its low key super conscious....its a touching song too, I sang the lyrics to my niece on the low (when she was a baby and didn't really understand)
9. "Wise Intelligent is a BEAST!" In response to Reply # 0 Sun Mar-18-12 11:56 AM by Abstract_TheEclectic
I actually can not see how even the weakest rap fan would deny that if they were to hear him.
As for Boots he is a prodigy as far as production.
The main thing that keeps people from considering them is that they are/were both apart of groups and have never rapped about standard everyday stuff that the average casual rap fan appreciates.
Whether we like it or not, casual rap fans hold a lot of weight when it comes to massive recognition.
11. "but that's not what K_Orr is talking about" In response to Reply # 9
he's talking about heads like us, who dig rap that is marginalized/underground/on the fringes, who do not listen to Wize or Boots. I think this post is indicative of that. I personally only heard a few Coup cuts (dope, at that), and the few Poor Righteous Teachers cuts from their 90s output, that's it. for whatever reason never dug deeper. I think this is a good opportunity for those of us still sleeping to have y'all post some of their work so we can check it out
