"MJ fans: do you find other MJ fans kind of...er...'scary'?'"
Thu Mar-15-12 01:09 PM by Joe Corn Mo

it's so weird. b/c i am a huge MJ fan.
everybody that knows me knows this about me.

and i have 0 shame about this.

well... maybe i DO have SOME shame about this,
b/c whenever i see footage of MJ fans camping outside of hotel rooms (do these people have jobs?)

or releasing doves after his aquittal (let's think about this...
she fed and maintained and cared for these doves
for the specific purpose of letting them go when the verdict came)

i can't help but wonder,
deep down inside...

am i like that?
is THIS what i look like to other people? lol

and the thing is, i totally understand
why folks love MJ that much.

i absoultely relate to the fact
that these artists changed people's lives in a profound way.

in my heart, i completely understand where they are coming from.
(much like i understand star wars nerds, or folks that
love "the matrix" to an obsessive degree.)

at the same time,

seriously?

my fellow MJ fans scare me.

and im amazed that MJ was as well adjusted as he was
considering the fact that he had folks like the lady w/ the doves
coming up to him in the street...

i sometimes feel the same way
about fellow prince fans.

and it blows me away that a sizeable section
of prince fans and MJ fans have some sort of beef w/ each other.

i swear, they can both be awesome at the same time,
and they really have very little in common aside from the fact
that they are both black.

but that's another post.

anyway... thoughts?

who can just take off from work like that?
what's the deal?

and the look on her face when she was releasing the doves?

that was intense.

a very good friend of mind once told me that and he is a very well known writer. i agreed because in my lifetime i've never seen another artist capture people's attention like that Brother did. 1)

MJ stands behind a curtain and you knew it was him. you let Todd Bridges stand behind a curtain and you going what you doing Willis? 2)

MJ fans i understand and then i dont. i understand because to me He is just like Stevie Wonder a Musical standard and a Dominant figure and talent.

MJ was the kind of cat you went to the record store and you either bought his thing

or you bought his stuff and somebody else's

or you avoided him, however you knew he was there.

i mean folks either lie or played it off after things became less about the music in the late 90's onward where he was concearned and alot would say oh i use to like him, etc.. alot of folks turned on him and that sadden me.

however while I hold him in high regard as a Musical Genius,etc.. he was a Man just like myself and he had his short comings and he made mistakes.

however i understood his up bringing and the fact he is a Brother.

i always talk about MJ and always will. he made classics

MJ had the stats and Jewlery and he owned the stage. he broke down doors and barriers period.

growing up back in the day we didn't have nearly half as many black folks on tv, etc.. as we do now. alot of things are taking for granted and Michael J.Jackson showed you that nothing is impossible.

his impact paved the way for a Oprah and a President Obama. MJ is a National figure and he is the most known figure here Period.

now I didn't like every album or song he did. however you always knew it was him.

ain't been another cultural impact since him period.

you can have Garth brooks, Titanic and twilight etc.. moments but MJ and the thriller Era was so incredible you felt unreal.

i always defend the Brother and always will.

the way he was treated here and the media in europe.

that man got called out of his name a plenty of times.

if MJ was White he would be getting all the attention that the Beatles and Elvis get.

the powers that be in America had to make you think and Believe that the Eagles Greatest Hits album actually sold as much as "thriller"?? now that is comedy gone wrong.

he got alot of love and yet he himself always felt like he had to prove even more as a Black Man.

i grew up on the Man and he was the reason why i followed the business side in detail and he had to battle.

and i do not mean that as a figure of speech.
... as a kid, i thought that man was magic.

you would think that once i reached adulthood,
i would have grown out of such silly fantasies...

but you would be wrong.

like, for real.

it has crossed my mind, on numerous occassions, even as an adult,
that he might have been lighting the tiles in billie jean
with for serious magical powers.

same with the smooth criminal 45 degree lean.

i considered the possibility, even as an adult,
that michael jackson could morph into a car.
and a robot.

i am an attorney, and i considered these notions.

i didn't stop toying with this idea that MJ may have been magic until he died.

which i didn't think could happen until it happened.

and do you know what?
when he first died, for a second it actually crossed my mind (for real) that his death maybe wasn't permenant some how.

like... maybe he can come back or something.

trust me,
dude's a relgion.

he touched a many a soul, however as Stevie wonder said back in 82 he got too big as a Black Man and they took him down.

he always had to fight with sony

the public was tripping(mainly white folks about the beatles catlog 10 years back i got into it with a homies girlfriend about it)

the victory tour prices which back then was seen as high, in 2012 a comeback show with sugar ray would be 30 easily.

he was a safe non threatening Negro period.

to get to that level in middle america you are

mr.clean period.

he paid the ultimate price at crossing over.

man I remember when Off the wall got shunned.

it took thriller a while and during that time period he was fighting for artistic respect.

i say this to say America turned there back on his Greatness as a Artist.

if MJ was white they would made a religion out of him and a school with studies etc.. about him.

this man from head to toe was emulated and watched like no other and he got taken for granted by so many.

he never got loved like the beatles and Elvis.

he told Minster farrikhan personally

yeah,
MJ generates religious fervor.

was no soundscan in the hood

motown never kept records

sony didn't always update there records.

also the record sales tell a part of the story but not nearly the other side of it.

how many acts signed to Sony or epic because of him?

there is so much more that ain't even been touched upon.

Prince himself said that Thriller was important to black Artists. as has R.Kelly, babyface, Lionel Richie,Brandy, Smokey Robinson,etc..

he showed that a Black Artist could dream and think big.

he had a vision as a Arist.

alot of folks seem to forget that MJ came during a very segregated time and era. he was a kid performer during the chitlin curcuit segregated era.

In response to Reply # 41

the list i cited says he started charting in 1971. that's when Motown released his 1st solo records, right? so that says to me the Jackson 5 records aren't included in the 750 million figure.

and then there's this:

"All artists included on this list have their lowest available claimed figure(s) supported by at least 15% in certified units. That is why Cliff Richard, Alla Pugacheva, Charles Aznavour, Bing Crosby, Nana Mouskouri, Deep Purple, The Jackson 5 and A. R. Rahman have not been included on this list."

we know Motown was funky about getting those RIAA certifications.

MJ is seen by the public and the media as the last great music superstar. Beatles, Elvis, MJ.

you want him to eclipse Beatles and Elvis? give it time. back in the wayback nobody thought the Beatles would be bigger'n Elvis. and look what's happening.

give it time.

Wow..Really? That seems boarderline nuts lol. I think alot of reations to MJ are dependant on the age you were when you introduced to him. I was a child when he was a child so I witnessed his progression from a talented kid to a certified freak show. MJ got lost in his own head. The magic became more important than the music and in the end he couldn't live up to the hype.

I read in the paper that war will bring peace.

okay so as a kid, i had this bunny rabbit.
i loved this bunny rabbit.
every day, my mother and i would go out to feed the bunny rabbit in the cage.

so anyway, one day i went out there to feed the rabbit with my mom...

but the bunny rabbit isn't in the cage.
she said, "it looks like the rabbit ran away to live with the other bunny rabbits in the woods."

now, me being 5... this seemed like a perfectly rational explantion.
so i litterally never thought about this bunny rabbit again.

*cut to 13 yrs later*

i was sitting around w/ my family,
and somehow we get on the subject of bunny rabbits.

i casually mention to the group, "yeah, i used to have a bunny rabbit, but it died."

my dad chimes in and said, "joseph, that rabbit died."
and for a moment, i mourned for my dead bunny rabbit for the first time.

now what's the point of this story?

i mean, as a kid, you start with a few assumptions
that aren't really questioned.

some of those assumptions are still sort of lurking around
in weird places, i guess.

to the point that when MJ died,
i was like, "how?" lol

so yeah...
it is what it is, i guess.

btw, of course, Elvis and the Beatles have been around longer than MJ and they've been 'gone' for longer than MJ. their legends are older and more developed, sure. but MJ is in that mega-super-uber-omni-star arena w/them. i mean i think the public and the media treat him and his legend similarly.

and Madonna was pushed as his White counterpart. you see they always wanted a White version of his career.

from DOnny Osmond, to Madonna to Justin TImberlake etc.. in between to Justin Bieber.

He was the Gold standard and in truth he should have his own box.

his career lasted longer than Elvis and the Beatles put together.

he changed the course of Popular Music twice so he gotta be lumped with White Acts?

the Man has the Biggest selling album Ever.

was in the business 40 years hit in every decade from the late 60's to the 00's.

what else a Brother gotta do to have his own place?

he felt he was short changed and I agree.

borderline and lucky star.

she came out with a R&B feel and Pop. had Nile Rodgers Produce her most successful solo album to date "like a virgin"

and Olivia Newton John was more closer to Dobie Gray than to Michhael Jackson and I dig ONJ still.

the stakes were about putting somebody as a counter to MJ and Madonna was the one. Michael Jackson spoke about it quite a bit.

can't tell some folks nothing because they can't see the obvious when it comes to race and America, if you have a Black Person doing something then there is the counter from coporate yo.

but it had nothing to do w/ Madonna.

here's my theory,
and it's probably the only conspiracy theory I believe in...
but I swear black music is being sabatoged.

outside of MLK and Malcolm X and the panthers,
the most important figure in the civil rights movement was berry gordy.
just in terms of putting forth an image that changed the way white folks
viewed black folks and the way black folks viewed themselves.

"they" recognized that.
the power of music to affect people's consciousness.
which is why the FBI was following Hendrix and Lennon and Joplin
while the were following Malcolm and MLK (look it up on FBI.gov. It's been declassified).

anyway, everybody knew the power of MJ's music and "they" put the hit in. the defamation started after thriller and the character assassination
came w/ the child molestation shit in the 90s.

"they" killed black music.
that's why "the chronic" has a stronger legacy than "it takes a nation of millions".

that's why we have 1000 lil Wayne clones
and there's no such thing as Stevie Wonders anymore.

I don't know how George Clinton survived.
probably b/c everybody thinks he's crazy so he posed no threat. lol

ANYWAY, the MJ conspiracy has 0 to do w/ Madonna.

yeah, I am one of the weird MJ fans I'm talking about in the original post. lol

and also they marketed her as a big pop star.

Madonna has some talent and has some big singles in her catelog, however in the age of the video star White America needed a counterpart to MJ and they got her.

now Whitney was the true Queen of Pop however in the marketing game they made madonna it.

Michael Jackson was the standard and madonna went after the big dude on campus.

how many times did you read and hear Michael and Madonna when talking about big time cultural icons in the 80's onwards?

Michael Jackson is the biggest most important artist post civil rights era.

Berry Gordy as Great and Argualby the Greatest record man ever, was never a threat because he was too Greedy and didn't allow other enterprises to form with what he had.

Gordy sold Motown for 88 million and then they got re sold for 300 million a few years thereafter.

Michael Jackson was a movement as Jimi Hendrix was that is a threat in the big picture.

this shit is crazy.

MJ's character was "assassinated" because he got constant plastic surgery, bought a bunch of weird shit including the bones of a deformed man, had his skin changing color (even though we now know that wasn't intentional), dressed like a military commander and made giant statues of himself (that has to be in the pantheon of egomaniacal rock star moves), and most of all had a bunch of sketchy sleepovers with little kids - some of them quite famous - while also having the vocal and physical mannerisms of a guy who might be a bit off the heteronormative track.

I can't speak for what went on behind the scenes at the record labels. I can fully believe that some obstacles were thrown in MJ's path that white artists did not face. (Although I also believe that after "Thriller," their main interest in him was the part where he made them money, not some racist desire to shut down a greenback-generating factory.) I can get on board with that to some extent. But the media frenzy and even the court cases were largely the man's own fault. He was the biggest star in music and a bonafide weirdo; it would have been utterly bizarre if they DIDN'T talk about it; and when a very rich man has little kids sleeping in his bed, even if it's 100% innocent, that man simply should have known better. Or one of his handlers should have.

The stories of buying the elephant man's bones, the oxygen chamber, and other tabloid stories that started in the mid 80s were ploys that MJ and his team came up with. He believed he could manipulate the media but when he realized it wasn't working to his advantage, he went on the defense

That statue thing too was his idea to be controversial. He got his wish but again, it gave him negative press even though that was somewhat his attention (to get a "WTF?!" reaction)

He definitely bares some responsibility in much of the media frenzy of 1985-2009 but I do think the press went too far at times, especially during the trial and even times in his life when he was pretty quiet

the Purple Kool aid ones still think its 1978-84 and believe

he plays 27 instruments 1)

believe he ain't all Black 2)

believe he does everything on his records 3)

thinks he is superior to any other artist 4)

act as if Michael jackson, Stevie Wonder, Little Richard,James Brown,P Funk, Earth,Wind and Fire, Jimi hendrix,Sly Stone, and others didn't have a blueprint on his thing as a Artist 5)

believe everything in Purple Rain was real 6)

look at you sideways and crazy when you tell then that Andre Cymone, Dez Dickerson, Morris Day,Sonny THompson, had a hand in his thing musically 7)

and since Prince is selective about talking and telling the truth alot of myths have lasted and been accepted as fact. 8)

and alot of his purple aid folks speak Pricbonics and manner etc.. 9)

and defend what he does except when he talks about being a Black Man. 10)

having said all of that Prince Purple kool aid fans just believe he is a Superior period. and he created fallsetto singing, multi instrumentalist, leg splits,etc..

but they still aren't as dangerous as MJ "Neverland" heads. oh LAWD!

In response to Reply # 19

After all of these years.

And you should witness the discussion that takes place when somebody mention the songs "Avalanche" and "Dreamer". Folks go up in arms like you would never believe.

"Prince is spewing racial propaganda" and if folks wanna be slick they throw the ol' condescending "the lyrics are trivial" bullshit.

I pride myself in being a Prince fan, but there's a negative image that stuck with us and maybe its true. AFKAP said he thought I was one of those "arrogant purple pricks" upon my 1st posts in OKP. On the other hand, some of the coolest people I have ever met have shared the same love I have for "Wonderful Ass", go figure. We ain't that cut & dry after all.

much like the fantasy aspects of Purple rain the movie.

that is why in "do the right thing" when Pino says prince ain't really black he is different that mind set still lives till this day.

Prince sold a dream and made it safe for some white folks to feel comfortable. i know as talented as Prince is he knew he had to have the Revolution to get where he wanted and it worked.

but having Andre and Dez wasn't going to sell.

Shelia E and Cat didn't sell

or the Game Boyz. along with Sonny,ROsie,Levi and Bland.

every since the Black Album Prince been trying to be Blacker than Seal with a Skillet to fry especially in his content and it ain't what that cross over crowd that pays to hear the hits want and he knows that.

just like MJ he paid the ultimate price at appealing and appeasing.

some of those Prince fans that are so called color blind and love black folks don't want there Princy to be Black though unless he is playful about it in a Bryant Gumbel kind of way.

Hell, just put "Avalanche" in the search box and feast your eyes.

Oh yes, they're "special" alright.

U should check his "One Night Alone" piano solo album if you dig that sort of thing. I myself consider it among Lotus(where Dreamer's from) and Rainbow Children to be his best albums from the past decade.

I saw in the Dreamer thread. I found it real hard that someone misinterpreted those lyrics... Prince WAS born in 1958.

The ones standing outside of the courthouse everyday last year when Occupy LA first started were. I'll never forget the look of confusion on their faces when we went across the street to protest in front of the court buildings to get the media's attention.

And they were there everyday too. Same people.

When I hear or read these lyrics I feel the man was on a mission to spread love. as if he was sent from a greater power (God) to spread a message of love.

we're takin' over
we have the truth
this is the mission
to see it through

don't point your finger
not dangerous
this is my planet
you're one of us

we're sendin' out
a major love
and this is my
message to you
(message that's true)
the planets are linin' up
we're bringin' brighter days
they're all alive
waitin' for you
can't you see . . .?
you're just another
part of me . .

a rhythem nation
fulfill the truth
the final message
we're bringin' you
there is no danger
fulfill the truth
so come together
we're meanin' you

we're sendin' out
a major love
and this is my
message to you
(message that's true)
the planets are linin' up
we're bringin' brighter days
they're all alive
waitin' for you
so look the truth
you're just another
part of me . .

we're sendin' out
a major love
and this is you
message to you
(message to you)
the planets are linin' up
we're bringin' brighter days
they're all alive
waitin' for you
can't you see . . .?
you're just
another part of me
another part of me . .

we're takin' over
this is the truth, baby
another part of me

he left a lasting mark and he still had to fight as a Artist and he wanted to be more than what he was told.

MJ was a dreamer of the biggest and highest order and it backfired sometimes and others it worked.

but you see when you are a religion you are accepted or it the way it is viewed and this Man was always viewed as a Brother who got so big and just like in the film Malcolm X when the Po Po said he is too big well you know what comes next.

never gets the same respect in America as a White man that is a fact.

take President Obama Brother man done took out leaders that been around so long they can't even remember there own Youth.

however this racist country has turkeys asking for his brith certificate and trying to say things about his name and relgion,etc..

the facts of his accomplisments don't lie.

MJ was a Message in a bottle and shared it with the world and turned it out, however as he himself said because he didn't go around grinning and shuffling and also got into business and also had the rights to his music and owned his masters then they had it out for him.

the negative spin though he brought some on himself was also a evil counter to marginalize his accomplishments.

and he's actually underrated as a vocalist.
"off the wall" era MJ was an exceptional singer,
but that tends to be lost along with the theatrics of his performances.

this is similar to what happens w/ artists like
george michael...

they were so successful commercially
that their artistic merrit gets overshadowed.

True.

Whenever someone mentions MJ I gotta think what context I'm gonna think in.

Wide-eyed as a child watching the Thriller video?

Hearing about his troubles but always liking his latest single?

Getting called a faggot cause I rediscovered 'off the wall' as a young teenager and liked disco music?

Realizing that alot of his best vocal performances in the later part of his career were alot more geared to rocknroll. And seeing the influence of Trent Reznor on him.

Seeing a sudden gush of appreciation for him after he died. By people who didn't know or think about him as an artist beforehand. I remember the 'temperature' of MJ's image before he died. It wasn't so warm.

he was a great Soulful Singer who could Sang.

folks who heard him turn out " who's loving you" as a pre teen ain't trying to hear him being limited when that Man as a kid sang with more soul than many adults then and even more so now.

the man was a songwriter, arranger and Producer.

he created his own music through his rhythms and timing.

being a Great Entertainer covers all of the above period which gets lost.

IMO, when Maxx says he never got his due, I think he meant his due as a songwriter and a producer until his passing

For so many years (even now), people would credit all his post Motown success to Quincy Jones and Rod Temperton, even when it comes to songs like Shake Your Body Down To The Ground and Heartbreak Hotel, songs that had no Q or Rod involvement (Matter of fact, Heartbreak Hotel inspired Rod to come up with Starlight which turned into Thriller) It took some of the demos for people to see he wasn't just some artist who just sang songs that were given to him

I've had folks say he never wrote his own songs even though most of his biggest hits as a solo artist were written by him

I won't even go into the things Beatles fans have said or the things folks have written on Prince.org.....lol

i do agree that Sony may not have marketed Invincible as thoroughly as MJ's prior releases. but i'm not willing to attribute that to the label's desire to have him sign over the remainder of ATV b/c the label or The Man didn't want a Black man owning ATV.

it could've had more to do w/the fact that his record contract was nearly over and he wasn't willing to re-up. i've heard other acts complain that their label wouldn't promote the last album released under their then-current contract. i've heard label execs claim (off the record) this is done b/c they don't want a rival to reap the benefit of the label's promo work on that last album.

and...by 2001, MJ's public image was seriously damaged. and...that album pretty much sucked. it wasn't packed w/songs that could be singles. i think they dropped the ball on 'Butterflies' and 'Break of Dawn' and 'Whatever Happens'. and maybe 'Heaven Can Wait'. but the rest of the album was disappointing. and the previous 'album', Blood on the Dancefloor' had also been disappointing. MJ was kinda struggling, artistically. imo. so i don't think that record was gonna do HIStory or Dangerous numbers, regardless. it wasn't gonna do Thriller numbers, for sure.

anyway, i'm generally not into conspiracy theories. so that's part of my feeling on this too. if i were prone to believe in conspiracy theories, i think i'd have an easier time accepting that the dip in MJ's sales and popularity was due to a nefarious plot by The Man and had little, if anything, to do w/MJ's own actions.

and that MJ himself talked about a conspiracy doesn't help. he seemed to have a persecution complex. and he was real paranoid. just listening to his song lyrics going all the way back to 'Heartbreak Hotel' told me that. and he had a thing for the kinds of drugs that tend to make ppl paranoid and/or delusional. so i took his comments w/several grains of salt.

fuck you.

'Leave me alone' came out in 1987. Hyperdemic chambers and monkeys and Liz Taylor and all that stuff? Speaking of which....I'm convinced Paul Macca wrote that song. Even by proxy.

But his image became a joking matter in the mid 80's. I don't think it was racial. He was just a real douchebag.

well, MJ told the last guy he worked with that the Beatles Catalog is the reason they were fucking with him.

You have to remember... everytime they said MJ was broke what did he do? He went to the Middle East and borrowed against the Beatles Catalog.

Do the math.. you make it sound like the Beatles Catalog is worth 5 mill... that shit is damn near priceless and every year it appreciates. It was worth 1 Billion in 2003.. and said to be worth 4 to 5 Billion at the time of his death.

I'm sorry but the Beatles going to Itunes and Guitar Hero 2 weeks after he died isn't just a coincidence.

Buying The Beatles Catalog was the shrewdest business move EVER by a black artist in the music industry.

MJ was ganster with it... do you really think he was "dating" Elvis Presley's daughter because he was attracted to her? I bet that dude was trying to get his hands on Elvis' shit as well.

It's like Michael Jackson is their escape. They want to live in the fairy tale. They are like children at heart. I admire that.

a lot of them said being so overwhelmed and the energy

folks would wait hours for the gates to open, then if they wanted a good view (there were no seats in the field area) they'd have to run their asses off and outrun thousands of people. Then you have to stand and wait til the show starts

no bathroom

no water

and you're a sea of people, packed in

plus during the UK shows (especially like Wembley stadium) were in the summer, so add heat and you got folks getting so overwhelmed to the point they pass out

In some concert footage like the Bad tour, you see people hosing down the audience lol

In response to Reply # 0

and it's disgusting.

People make false idols out of musicians they like. And there is a delusional element that they feel 'connected' to those people. It's very paper-thin to me....People should direct their love and adulation to their families or their immediate friends/loved ones.

I never get sad about a famous artist dying. I have a hard time sympathizing with someone who does. Is it genuine? Cause I've never felt that before.

In my opinion, MJ presented himself in an extremely fraudelent light to his obsessive fans. Like always saying 'I love you too'. John Lennon, Kurt Cobain were also very emotionally manipulative with their audience. It's all a bunch of BS. For pop stars, it's part of the game....it's part of the artistry.

yes, MJ the person
has nothing to do with MJ the symbol.

same w/ cobain.

and hendrix.

and lennon.

all of them. part of the artistry is the act.

but let's keep it real...
none of the people you love in real life are 100 percent in love
w/ the "real" you.

it's partially an image.
yeah, it probablly comes from some kind of genuine place,
but it's still an act.

love and self-delusion
are not unrelated.

which is not to say that makes love any less valuable.

but if we wanna be real about it,
admiration for other humans is usually rooted in some kind of blindness.

when he has been performing since he was 4? You wouldn't be a normal down to earth kind of guy if you had the power he had.

It's unrealistic to expect that guy to act normal.

In response to Reply # 0

because I was into the band for the music and the sound of Maynard's voice; I'm sure at one point I was invested in what he was saying but it was never the goal for me to understand or believe in their politics. I just wanted to listen to good records. The lengths that Tool fans (and the band themselves) went to make them much more important than their music practically scared me off as I got older and grew out of that musical phase probably more swiftly than I would have otherwise.
