"Albums with little to no profanity are impressive to me. #Skills"

When an MC can complete verses, songs, and even albums without over the top profanity, that always impressed me. Personally, it take a lot more skill and thought to do this. Who are some of your favorite artist or songs/albums that display this. When I think of Paid in Full or Midnight Marauders, there are like 10 curse words in both of those LP's combined. Rakim went 3 LP's in a row using little to no cursing. This is not common today in my eyes but there are some artist whose vocab extends pass massive profanity that sometimes dont flow with the verse/bars. Now in a freestyle I get it but when a person writes a well crafted song, its poetry in motion.

1. What Artist come to mind?
2. What song come to mind?
3. What album come to mind?

nothing about that song is original

the music is a straight rip of Summer Madness with zero added to make the sample clever in any way, and Will's style is a obvious straight rip of Rakim (he never sounded @ all like that before...nor after). Back then biting was a huge offense and originality (stylistically anyway) mattered, and he bit that cadence so unrepentantly it makes me sick

up to that point i was the world biggest JJ&FP apologist

i *HATE* how much love that derivative mess gets as opposed to say "Brand New Funk"

of course Brand New Funk is a better Hip Hop song but Summertime is a great song in its own right...regardless of the Rakim bite or not. The song is a feel good song that people from all back grounds appreciate. Your acting as if its some wack shit. It's not my G. Good Hip Hop Cook-Out Music and video

>nothing about that song is original

as i said before on here,
i used to hate (hate) hip hop.
i've expanded my taste, but if i start playing the "that's not original" game,
then we start moving down a road I made a point to not go down again...

so I won't address the fact that they ripped off kool and the gang for that track.
and since rap is sort of based on sampling (stealing, if you wanna be a dick about it)
the rakim argument is sort of weird to make too...

but I really can't say you're wrong about your critiques.

i'll just say this.

even when I hated hip hop,
I recognized that summertime was about as close to perfection as a song can get.

even my parents loved it.

it captured a vibe.
a feeling.

it sounds like the best parts about being black.
can't front on that.

and it's universal in a way that brand new funk can never be.

naw bro. I see your point,
but your point doesn't mater b/c the song is perfect.... ripoffs aside.

The downfall of rap is that people still complain about people "biting " other people's flow style as if that person owns it.

How stupid are people ?

I mean really?

Hiphop as a genre borrowed it's main backbeat from Ringo STARR.....

And you have the nerve to act like one rapper was biting off another when the whole genre of hiphop is one big bite ?

Think before you post.

But The Ecstatic, especially the second half, is nearly curse free, and poetically, imo, shows Yasiin on a whole 'nother level, even past where he was on BOBS. So

Yasiin Bey

Only two curses in F&L, and he was talking about cursing when he said it, so a pass would be in order.
On The Cool, he starts cursing more after "Dumb It Down". Before that track, he kept it to a minimum.
I still can't bring myself to listen to Lasers...but cursing seems like more of a regular thing to him now. Maybe he made a promise to some old lady at the beginning of his career, but she's prolly not around anymore.

A track as hard as "Creatine" that he managed to make profanity free shows some true penmanship.

Also Stalley. Lincoln Way Nights is clean for the most part and bangs.

Doom doesn't generally over-saturated his rhymes with explicit lyrics anyway.
Thats kinda why I don't understand the Tyler The Creator reference ( almost everytime Odd Future is mentioned. Esp Earl Sweatshirt).

..considering it was on Ruthless.

Probably enough to get it a PG13 rating nowadays if it was a movie..

I haven't done a count, but I swear the D.O.C. only said "shit" once (Portrait of a Masterpiece).. He says "bitch" a couple times in B.b.D. ..or was it once?

"Damn" and "ass" don't even register as cusses to me since you hear it on tv and the radio pretty often.. And I don't count NWA's vocals. Not too sure about his usage of the N bomb though.

I don't even think he censored himself or tried to keep it clean either.. His command of the English language and skill in rhyming with it is just that advanced. It's amazing to me because it's one of the hardest rap albums of all time.

Who else? Besides the great emcees listed by others above..

Heavy D kept it mostly curse free.

MURS' underground stuff was heavy with cussing, but he kinda went through a "clean" phase when he started with 9th; however, that didn't last TOO long.. He cusses again, but not as much as in his younger days.

Chubb Rock, Special Ed, and others sounded dope without leaning on profanity as a crutch.

Funny how that works..

so i really paid attention to MC's that limited their cursing and tended to like artists who had more dynamic vocabularies.

Tribe was known for their dexterity. D.O.C. too and Heavy D & Will Smith. Rakim like the OG poster said was good at this.

i agree with So What that the limitation gives the MC a chance to 're-think' or go over their rhymes so that they have been edited rather than come from off the top of their head.

i personally think more highly of MC's who are able to get their point across without the cursing. when i hear people curse, especially homophobic imagery, i dismiss the MC's talent. i tend to think of them more as talented and not enlightened.

I know Kev Brown doesn't curse at all, infact when he produces a track for someone more than half the time he will edit out the curses; with John Robinson, I think he does curse but hardly ever, he's very lyrical and is one to prove that you can spit without having to say one curse word thru a song and still have wordplay.

Other than that, I can mention tons of gospel/christian rappers who obviously don't curse but that goes without saying.
