the drum pattern acts as another hook.

each drum sound leaps out of the speakers in a different way.
if you isolated the drum pattern in the mix,
you'd still have a catchy musical idea.

the drums track in prince's "the beautiful ones"
has a sonic character all it's own.
i mean, listen to the way each drum sound pans from one speaker to the next. it gives the drum sounds depth.
and all the little synths weaving in and out
add accents to the drums that would make even an instrumental
of this song be compelling in an avante garde way.



now listen to the drum pattern in the mariah carey/ sisquo version...
is just flat.

it just limps along.
it's plodding.

Considering it was written to replace Electric Intercourse (another masterpiece) it had to be special. Cause to me that is one of his most unsung unreleased jawns ever and I always thought they should have found a way to incorporate that on the album and in the film as orginally intended. But then - how do you upstage the Beautiful Ones? lol.

Not to mention you have no idea of Prince's vocal range - maybe you should become familiar, that alone will change this argument.

The DJ was obviously a Mimi fan, and she played this song to him on air. He replied by saying that Mariah should've sang it "alone", and that it wasn't meant to be a duet given that its only one-sided conversation.

Her version was the song that introduced me to Prince' world. I heard her version before hers, and being a Mimi stan back in the 90s, I made such a fuss at tracking down the songs she sampled or covered. This one stuck.

there was always such an 'environment' during the original recordings it's like people who cover him - completely miss the mark because of that alone ya know.

in that my main draw to him is his musicianship, I hover over the hits, and kind of still remain green in the "depth" of his catalog.

I can talk a few boots, but not to the level of some of y'all.

Only because I happened to listen to that song one day when my Prince phase was over and fell in love with it all over again.
Tried to revisit the Prince version and still only wanted to listen to the newer one.

Prince version is the goat though, because it's the original painting and them niggas just tracing the lines.
Mariah and Sisquo version go, though. I'm glad they remade it.
I like the slower beat. Gets me in a vibe similar to bouncing to a slow Young Chop beat holding a cup of that drank (cranberry juice of course)
Plus I've always been a fan of both of them, vocally.
Then again, I'm of the mindset that many of Prince's songs would have been much better with different vocalists from himself.

Prince's original has an ice-cold, desolate and futuristic but still beautiful vibe that transcends stuff like genres and eras. By comparison, this cover makes it sound like a well-written but generic R&B ballad. I can't see how anyone can prefer the generic above the truly special but that's me...

Well I personally like Mariah and Sisqo's version of The Beautiful Ones more than Prince's version because they made it into a beautiful adult contemporary R&B jam. I do recognize that Prince's version is classic though and has more raw passion in the vocals.
