"Safe & Sound is a masterpiece (and Quik's best)"
Mon Mar-12-12 05:15 PM by Brew

I've been listening to this album a lot recently so it's just been on my mind. But while a lot of people are split about whether Quik's best album is Rhythm-al-ism or Safe & Sound, I think it's an easy decision...Safe & Sound is a masterpiece.

I admit that I'm partial to the west coast/g-funk sound, so that certainly plays a part in my opinion on this. And I should stress that I take nothing away from Rhythm-al-ism, which I think is a pretty flawless album itself.

But, I just find that Safe & Sound has a certain consistency that doesn't let up, not for one track. Somehow, every single song flows perfectly as if it's one long, smooth, funky track, but that said, the sound never gets stale. It remains fresh throughout.

I think the instrumentation on that album is insane. That flute at the end of Somethin 4 tha Mood? Orgasmic. The strings throughout a lot of the tracks are just beautiful. The drum tracks. The "hooks" (for lack of better term) on songs like It'z Your Fantasy and Let You Havit, just funky, hard, yet smooth all at the same time. The hooks on Somethin 4 tha Mood and Safe & Sound, the "talkbox" or whatever it's called (that Roger introduced him to) that he used on a lot of these tracks added a ton of flavor to already funky tracks.

Again I should stress, this takes nothing away from Rhythm-al-ism. I look at that album as his attempt to step into a more r&b oriented sound, and he succeeded at that attempt with flying colors. I just think the above-referenced consistency on Safe & Sound outshines that of Rhythm-al-ism. For example, a song like "Speed" from Rhythm-al-ism, while not a bad track, just doesn't seem to fit the groove of the rest of the album to me. There's no track I would say should be removed from the album, I just find Safe & Sound to have a much more cohesive sound.

This may have been discussed before (and if it was, chances are I was all up in that post cause I'm a huge Quik fan), and if so I apologize. Just was thinking about it as I've been listening to it front to back several times over the last couple months.

How would you all rank Quik's albums? This isn't a set in stone list but I think mine would look like this:

1. Safe & Sound
2. Rhythm-al-ism
3. Quik is the Name
4. Under tha Influence
5. The Book of David
6. Balance & Options
7. Way 2 Fonky
8. Trauma

I honestly thought I'd catch more flack for putting Way 2 Fonky so low. I'm sure that'll come up at some point.

But yea. I liked Trauma, a lot in fact, but find myself listening to it very minimally compared to the rest of Quik's albums. Under tha Influence ranks as high as it does because of the time in my life that it came out; it was kind of a soundtrack to my freshman year in college so I just tend to enjoy it more. Balance & Options and Book of David could actually probably swap and I wouldn't think anything of it, like I said besides the first 3 (like you said, too I guess), this isn't a master list, some swapping could definitely be done. Balance & Options was my anthem the first time I went to Vegas, and Book of David was on constant rotation for 4+ months after it came out.

I love them all so it's tough to rank, this was just my best attempt. How would you rank the last 5 (since you said you agree with the first 3)?

True. Like I said, I love it. I just find myself going back to it less often than the rest.

I think one issue I had with it was the amount of guests. I realize it was his indy album so he was trying to hook up with probly like a wish list of people he'd wanted to work with over some time. It just felt like the guest list was all over the place. You know, like The Game, then Chingy, then Jodeci, then Luda, then B-Real, then Wyclef, then TI...just felt spotty is all.

But again, I do not dislike any of his albums at all, and love Trauma.

Safe+Sound

Rhythmlism

quik is the name

way too fonky

after that its hit and alot of miss.

for me 91-98 was his best stuff after that i dug obviously "Well" and tha divorce song" and a few other things mainly the Quik grooves. the live set was cool as well.

but album wise Rhythmlism is the last album of his i would get with on the real.

and on the real while i dug Safe+sound a whole lot, he ain't never made an album that i felt all the way through, however Quik is the 2nd Greatest West Coast Producer Ever IMO with Shock G as his 2 A obviously Dr.Dre is number 1.

the use of the Brothers Johnson strabbery letter 23 with the ending of Prince's "i wanna be your lover" just felt kinda corny IMO. the music of that track felt like the stuff he did on way too fonky which to me was Hit and Miss as a Album.

i think "Summer Breeze" is underrated on Safe+Sound and a real cleaver use of Jermaine Jackson's "you like me don't you"

don't eat it and dollaz and sense are the Money tracks.

I agree that Way 2 Fonky was very hit and miss. All over the place, and a surprise considering that it was sandwiched between Quik is the Name and Safe&Sound, both of which were very consistent, excellent efforts.

and the triangle did wonders for the Production tip. yeah it was a trip about "way 2 fonky" because I loved "Jus lyke COmpton" and the Quik instrumental on that joint was banging, but that album on a whole left me like whatever.

but he came back on attack with Safe+Sound.

One of the best opening tracks ever in America'z Most Complete Artist, Just Lyke Compton, Way 2 Fonky, Quik's Groove II, When You're A Gee, No Bullsh!t, Only For The Money, Let Me Rip Tonight and another great closer in Niccas Still Trippin. Me Wanna Rip Ya Girl is the nly cut I didn't care for.

If anything this album along with Trauma is Quik's most underrated and underappreciated album.

I think I need to rank Balance & Options higher than it is. I think I may need to update it to:

1. Safe & Sound
2. Rhythm-al-ism
3. Quik is the Name
4. Balance & Options
5. The Book of David
6. Under tha Influence
7. Way 2 Fonky
8. Trauma

This is so hard for me.

and seeing your ratings below, I can't disagree with any of them at all. Like I said, Way 2 Fonky ranks low just because I felt it was more inconsistent than most of his others, same with Trauma, but I love them all. The lowest rating I'd give one of his albums, like you, would be like an 8.5 and that would be for Trauma. I didn't and don't dislike ANY of his work. Just had to try and rank them somehow.

There's very high highs on that album but it's so inconsistent, but yea he came back and said "fuck all this" on Safe&Sound, found the groove he had on Quik is the Name and enhanced it.

lost Maseuburg which had to take alot of steam out of his creativity 1)

had that fallen out with his sister 2)

the whole fiasco with Vibe awards 3)

LA Reid told him point blank I'll keep you on as a Producer but not so much as a Artist 4)

and after hitting with Truth Hurts and doing the score for that Chris Rock movie where he played a president you would have thought Quik would have been booming, but it was a dicy decade.5)

because he would go to magazines in interviews and say things like I can't have so and so on my label and they only can sell Regional.

then he himself was only seling regional

or how he clowned Snap Music and then turned around and made a Snap ALbum and said if this is was they want then I''l give it to them.

Quik is never satisifed with his music and he just is afraid of going all the way where he truly wants to.

Brother Scorpion said it best about Quik he is a R&B Mind all the way, problem is he can't go bout it the whole way.

much like how Spike Lee wanted to be a Muscian deep down.

Quik burned some bridges and some things got cool again and some not so much.

he is working with Young Jeezy which shows me the same ole same with Quik he wants that bank.

he use to clown some cats and yet he jumped on the Chingy Wagon head first.

Quik is a trip.

Like I said, the reason I put S&S above it is cause it is 100% consistent throughout. Rhythm-al-ism doesn't have any bad songs, but 2-3 of them don't fit the rest of the groove, which I would describe as west coast r&g...Speed is the first one that comes to mind. Really good song, but doesn't sound like anything else on the album. S&S has one consistent sound throughout.

I thought it was inconsistent and not as cohesive as the albums surrounding it (Quik is the Name, S&S and Rhythm). I'm actually surprised everytime I listen to it how unbalanced it sounds.

I still love it tho, it's got some absolute GEMS, but just doesn't hold up to the ones above it IMO. I still rate it like an 8.5.

I recognize why people struggle with it. And for years my answer was Rhythm-al-ism by a hair, but would go back and forth. But recently I've just totally changed my tone and it's S&S no question, but I guess I could go as far as to say that Rhythm-al-ism is 1A. I just prefer the consistency of S&S more is all.

But to me it is
Him ,Rob and G were on fire on that record!!

As far as his solo work, it fluctuates between Safe and Rhythm as his best.

I love Suga Free, and have heard of this album just didn't remember it by name. I will be finding this tonite, somewhere. Thanks.

While we're here, how many albums does Suga have? Is that the only one? If more, does Quik work on all of them? I need to catch up on whatever stuff he has out there. He's mad entertaining and works very very well with Quik ("Nobody" is probably my 2011 song of the year)

why ya bullshitting alone...whew
Suga is the Keith Sweat to Quik's Teddy Riley
Quik (along with Bacon and G one) production was perfect for Suga's hilarious pimp raps.
IMHO, one of the best west coast hip hop records ever
And one of the most slept on
It's hard to top the production on it.

I think the reason why I give the nod to rhythm is for suga's inclusion on it.
No Doubt kills it!!!
Those two together are awesome!!!

Yep - couldn't agree more. I'm actually listening to Rhythm-al-ism right now and No Doubt got replayed twice. I tend to forget how hot that joint is.

I'd still rank it behind S&S and Rhythm...but I like it a lot. Great instrumentation throughout. I didn't really get to focus as much on Free's lyrics the first time around cause I'm at work but I'll be giving it more listens this week to get the whole picture.

But I was really feeling Doe Doe and da Skunk, Tip Toe, If U Stay Ready, On My Way, Dip Da...the whole thing really but those ones stood out.

For me what trumps it is the consistent stellar musicianship
There's a focus on that record that I don't get from s&s and rhythm
Suga's rhymes cleared the way for q and crew to lay it down with no pressure.
Sounds like they were having a ball and including us in on the set.
I hear they did that shit in two weeks.

big time back then, it ain't seeing those two.

i dug all the songs mentioned and the county jail free style.
Toni Braxton "breath again" that cut alone got used by cats back then.

I dig Sugga Free and for a minute back then he had cats who wanted to sign him but he stayed loyal to Quik.

that is the only album by Sugga free that i can get into more than halfway though.

i love his humor and his takes on things, however it is missing another aspect.

but Sugga Free as far as funny MC's go, is easily a top 10.

he cracks me up sho nuff.

Quik said he was impressed with Free being on pitch and keeping his beat on time.

that was a free style old school moment on that album and I applauded that because he showed a whole different side to his game.

man i played that disc out.

i hooked a homie up with a copy and he was in the burbs and he is a Brother and he got up early and was blasting that Joint real loud and

5 O came a knocking on the door because he had Street Gospel on full blast.

so a few years later I hooked him up with the Quik and Massenburg "Konnected Project" " i wanna see" was on full blast.

those were fun times back in the day.

what's funny though is that I find myself listening to that track less than just about every other track on the album. Which takes nothing away from its greatness. It just solidifies how amazing an album it is overall.

But yea. Sick jam. Kills summer.

Safe + Sound > Rhythm-al-ism but they're both pretty great. All Quik albums are dope to me but Way 2 Fonky is my least favorite.

53. "Still a hard call. Musically, Rhythmalism. Rap wise, Safe n Sound"
In response to Reply # 0

Rap wise meaning lyrically, content, flow, personality, etc. etc. Safe n Sound felt like it was his own style, but Rhythmalism felt like it was something we had NEVER heard before, and didn't have much influence from any other producers at the time. Same way the other post compares Diggin u out to Gin n juice, yea it was great, but he used samples on most songs, and most of them were recognizable as hell....while Rhythmalism came with noooooo samples or even interpolations aside from Speed (I think), and was on a whole different level. Even outside of rap, I have NEVER heard anything like "Thinkin bout u"....that shit was just remarkable. And the solo at the end of that? Yeah.

Without giving TOO much thought, I'd rank em like.....

1. Rhythmalism
2. Safe & sound
3. Quik is tha name
4. Balance & Options (even though he hates it)
5. Way 2 fonky
6. Trauma
7. Under tha influence
8. Book of David

And with that, most folks say "WTF, you think Book of David was his worst album?" and it's like....I thin the main issue is that there were no standouts on there to me, and that most of us didn't have as high expectations as we did on other albums, so we judge them different. On the other albums, it's at least 1-2 classic, great tracks that he put out. Black Mercedez, Trouble, Do I love her, Jus lyke Compton, Mo pussy, etc etc etc....on each of his albums, great or not as good (not bad), he had some standouts that we still love to death. This album didn't have any....and nah, it didn't have but 2-3 filler skippable tracks, and had some good songs, but just nothing that made me love it like that.

I hear you. And that's great, and like I said, Rhythm-al-ism is perfect in its own right.

But two things, one that I already touched on, and one that you touched on above, that confirm my feeling that S&S is his best:
1) as I said in my original post, it's the consistency of S&S that puts it above Rhythm IMO. Sure he used samples, but the samples all meshed together well. Sure it sounded similar to what he had done on Quik is the Name to a certain extent, but the beats were so crisp, hard, and chill all at the same time that I just find it unbelievable. The album sounds thorough and cohesive throughout. Like I said, a song like "Speed" doesn't fit the rest of Rhythm at all, even though it's not a bad song. I'm a sucker for a cohesive album so that's why it takes the cake.
2) as you touched on, S&S was Quik's own style which he sounded most comfortable over, which also (to me) makes it (slightly) preferable to Rhythm. While he took a lot of chances on Rhythm, and let's be honest, succeeded in just about all of them, S&S was kinda his comfort zone, and it showed. It had the west coast sound that was topping the charts but at the same time was so very specific to Quik that it separated itself IMO.

Yea, I love Balance & Options as well, despite his own hatred for it, and I actually went back and ranked it higher haha after listening to it this week.

"Nobody" wasn't a standout/classic?! Otherwise, though, I fully hear you. It still stood amongst my top albums of the year for 2011 but it's missing the "it" factor that many/most of his previous albums had. I still find it to be right in the middle of the pack in my rankings, but I get what you're saying.
