Both are the centerpieces of their albums, the club bangers so to say. Poth songs are lyrically-written perfectly by intelligent, prolific (Cantante is written by Ruben Blades, almost like a "Pagliacci-content-type song, Periodico is by C. Curet Alonso, a very nasty, bitter song about a girl who's love is as useful as "yesterday's newspaper"), and no one else can execute these better, artistically since it imitates his own life story, better than Hector.
Also, both songs are produced and arranged by Willie Colon, so along with his trombone lines, he knows how add that over-the-top elements of those sweeping strings to turn these suckas in to full blown-street dramas, very true to the Salsa Brava nature.

One of the best ballads ever. We can hear that heartbreak in his voice, but the best part is that percussive piano transition between the verses and the chorus; that is some heavy shit:

Probably the first slow one that I heard. I knew the major hits and a lot of album cuts from my dad, but I never really delved into it for myself until I was like 20 (3 years ago or so).
It's funny, I guess I had a similar path to a lot of people regarding their parent's music. I hated all Salsa and Merengue throughout my teenage years and would complain during car rides or put on headphones and listen to my underground rap shit.
Then as a young adult, I started to appreciate Salsa and found myself going back and asking my dad about songs and albums he used to play lol.
I would also suggest if you're new to Fania, or Salsa music in general, a nice place to start is that 1970-1973 Willie Colon album run featuring Hector Lavoe as his singer. This is like the equivalent to any important album run from any genre's most important artists. Really innovative stuff Willie was doing by exploring further than mambo/son/rumba/guaguanco/boogaloo canon by paying homage to the direct Afro influence on his music:
1970: La Cosa Nuestra 1971: La Gran Fuga/The Big Break 1972: El Juicio 1973: Lo Mato
Every track on these are a killer; even his 1972 Xmas lp "Asalto Navideņo has "La Murga" which gives any of these Fania songs a run for their money:

What makes Willie's arrangements unique is his brass section, and he usually beefs up on trombones to give it that badass "brava" sound. Not only that, the trombones will be trading different lines back and forth, like how Marvin multi-tracks his vocals.

Who could forget his cover of "Pastime Paradise"? Stevie was originally going for a "Latin" feel when he first recorded, but then it took a life of it's own. Perhaps Ray's version is something he had in mind...
