"Haterade gulp: Drake, B.o.B., Cudi, Lupe, Tyga, Wiz, Mac Miller"

I'll throw in Yelawolf and French Montana in there, too.

100% Corn.

None of these dudes represent what I want to see out of hip hop or what made me love hip hop. Each success these guys have, a little bit of hip hop dies. Matter of fact, the popularity of these chumps almost makes me embarrassed to say I listen to hip hop. I'd like to see someone make an argument that these guys make "art" or are at least sincere in the music they make. Why isn't the number one litmus test for a music artist whether or not their voice and music is authentic, honest and sincere? How is this shit not wack?

If you can rock with this stuff, then I would argue that you are (A) young, (B) only listen to what Pitchfork (in an ironic hipster way) says is cool or (C) you hate yourself and want to align yourself with half-thought-out pandering ignorance over shitty soulless production.

Its been a long day, and after listening to the radio a little bit on the drive home from work, a button has been pushed.

If the popularity of those guys is enough to make you question you love of the genre, Id venture to say maybe you didn't really love it in the first place.

that is not acclimated with hip hop will assume this is what you represent. Also, can you say you are a fan of a genre if 95% of it is unlistenable to you? I like sample-based (and skillfully found samples from a passionate dedication to digging, history and respect...or just original) hip hop, with emcees that create trends rather than follow. The "freshness" which embodies the previously made qualities is what caught my ear to begin with. I like music that sounds like it was made as art first instead of made to sell first.

some will be grimy, I suppose Odd Future fans represent that for todays youth, but lot's of "regular" youths will want to be a part of the "craze" of the "hottest" stars, like Drake.

He's got talent, I just hate his voice and don't like the choices he makes as far as songwriting and production. He's made a few too many songs that could be the intro to a teen drama.

And yes, LASERS was absolute garbage.

He played his fans, and looked like a huge hypocrit. F*ck that album.

BUT

One bad album doesn't erase everything dude did previously...or since. Because there is some heat on his last mixtape.

For one, the ONLY thing they have in common is that they are all young. But none of em sound ANYTHING alike. I can't even take two of them in there and say they sound similar.

Two...there's nothing horrible that each person here has done. Of course, you can point out things you dislike about each one, but to just group them together and then insult them AND people who like em? You're fishing.

seems like he just picked all the names of popular young MC's off the top of his head and went in.

Sounds like he hates the production though, Lupe threw me off until I read more into what I think he was trying to say.

He's tired of synths/bass, he wants more chipmunk soul samples and boom-baps.

Not synths, deep bass, ambience that's getting popular now.

I actually like all a that^

because all the trap-rap production with those drums, you know the ones were getting tired.

I think there's a nice balance now though. *shrugs*

You got Rick Ross, with the Lex Luger shit, Drake with the moody ambient stuff, Lupe obviously went full cheese for his label (I pray) hopefully his next LP will be pure greatness.

I haven't listened to anything by Wiz since, Kush and OJ out of fear more than anything. I heard that single on the radio with snoop and got a lil shook.

I can't comment on anyone else except Cudi, who obviously wouldn't be his cup of tea since he doesn't like the, moody atmospheric stuff.

Youth has nothing to do with it. I am only giving a pass to those that are young that dig some of this shit. A 14 year old girl only has so many of hours of stuff she has absorbed. How does she know what else is out there?

I do dig Hodgy Beats new EP. He's young.

did you just say Drake, Cudi, Tyga, Wiz and Mac Miller sound nothing alike, LOFL?

now you shut the fuck up, 'cause that's some bullshit. they all make songs for woman (some argue strictly for woman), for the clubs (AND THERE IS NOTHING WRONG WITH THAT), over emotive-syth textures, with the random 16 on a street single, and are not above rapping or catering to the euro-trash dance shit all over radio. All are about image over substance and branding themselves as multi-faceted commodities, which can open up a conversation about race and the current state of capitalism i don't want to get into. They all try hard as shit to say witty punch lines as well (sometimes succeeding). DO they all have their own identities, kind of... but claiming they're their own entity is fucn laughable

Lupe is the sore Thumb in that list. And Yela and French don't roll in any of their lanes, well Yela tried to with his Shady release and fell flat on his face.

but whatever with this "I'm so above people hatin' on young niggas getting money" posturing. NO ONE, in particular with art, is above criticism, NO ONE

Drake and Cudi kinda in the emo-ness.

Their production doesn't sound alike at all.

Drake's more lyrical. Kid Cudi doesn't even "rap" in a conventional sense on half his songs, so calling him Hip-Hop or a rapper doesn't really give him credit for what he does best. Some of his best "songs" don't have rapping on them.

Listen to Man on the Moon 1&2 for what it they really are. They aren't conventional Hip-Hop, closer to trip-hop really imo, but not really trip-hop, post-hop? lol that's stupid.

B.o.b. is straight pop now. He can spit, but he's a pop artist.

Lupe idk why we're talking about him btw. His last LP's production was straight pop. But can spit obviously

But that last mixtape? FLAMES. All his mixtapes matter of fact flames. First 2 albums, solid.

Tyga? the Lime in the coconut guy? lol
the one that got his chain stolen? Lol

I can't comment on him because I don't listen to him. Is he popular now?
He's on the radio?

His mixtapes are full of L.A./Regional type club bangers, and his album has more focused content. Still not a "good" rapper, but definitely a solid commercial rapper. Has nothing in common with the others, though. His only real comparison now is YG.

40. "Most rappers in the same generations will have similarities, but..."
In response to Reply # 22

NOPE, these cats don't sound alike. Drake and Cudi both have that emo to them, and Drake's production has influenced most of the new cats/producers out there, so they will all have similar production on certain tracks. But as rappers, they really sound the same??? Not at all. Wiz and ASAP? Maybe. Drake and Big Sean? Sometimes yeah. Cudi when he sings and Drake? Arguable. Wiz and Mac being from Pittsburgh, yeah you hear SOME similarities. But that's IT. Tyga's YM, and even he doesn't sound much of anything like Drake, lyrically, production wise, flow, content, etc etc.

Drake makes a lot more emo music than Club music...from his first two albums, he doesn't really have any "THIS is a club song" type tracks...The motto is basically a bonus track. Cudi damn sure doesn't have "club music" unless you count the "Day and night" remix. Tyga specializes in club music on mixtapes, and even on his album, only has three club tracks. Wiz is more laid back and songs like "Black and yellow" got play because they were hot songs, not because it was "club"...the Lex tracks like "Taylor gang" are his only ones that really go for the club. Mac Miller has that one track sampling "Let me clear my throat" which goes for the clubs, but even that's more of a White Frat Boy party track than anything else.

>but whatever with this "I'm so above people hatin' on young
>niggas getting money" posturing. NO ONE, in particular with
>art, is above criticism, NO ONE

That has nothing to do with anything. I damn sure don't like French Montana, and I only listen to maybe half of the artists on that list...but to just group them all together for some combined hate is a complete joke, period. You can NOT even find criticisms that really apply to ALL of them at all, because they're that much different. And shit, even Lupe isn't that young, so he's even more random in there.

I like lyrics that make you think. Samples that make you think where did this come from or what hidden messages the producer is conveying. Its the same with a painting...is it just a good painting of a house, or is the artist so good that they painted it with hidden messages or inside jokes that reference other artists that came before? Thats like another layer of appreciate of music.

Mainstream hip-hop sucks, it's sucked for a while now and it's going to keep sucking for the foreseeable future. Find some underground shit you can fuck with or move on.

Kanye has had some really good moments. As did Jay-z. Nicki Minaj as well. Lil Wayne. Its got its place. Eminem is mainstream..he's had his moments for sure. Andre 3000? Love me some Cee-Lo. Rick Ross is dope as hell. All of these artists have something in common...they have some depth in what they are doing. More creative freedom.

There's just a lot of shit just lately that goes beyond "its mainstream, but its real catchy".

In response to Reply # 49

"Black and yellow" soon as it fell off...it was never a club track to me. I've played French "Shot caller" maybe twice. No Mac Miller. No Lupe, unless you count "The show goes on" at this Middle School shit I did. Cudi maybe twice when "Day and night" Crookers remix was poppin. B.o.B. "Nothin on you" a few times when it was poppin. No Yelawolf.

And truth is, the artists I play most at my CLUB club spots are even worse than these ones, so I know you'd be pissed. Travis Porter, Roscoe Dash, YG, etc. etc. get hella play. But I do have Hip Hop spots I do where none of these artists get play...crowd is completely different though.

Freddie Gibbs, Mr Muthafuckin Exquire, Big KRIT, Willie Evans Jr and a bunch of others I'm sure that I'm forgetting to name. Honestly, with this much quality hip hop being made currently, anybody complaining is clearly looking to do so for nostalgia's sake.

37. "I find most of those guys fairly inocuous."
In response to Reply # 0

For a few of them, I'm only dimly aware of their existences'. I don't think I've ever heard any material by Tyga or French Montana. I don't think I actively dislike any of them; Cudi comes the closest, but I like a track or three from his first album.

I don't know, the rest are pretty boring to me. Lupe can definitely rhyme, but I find the music he releases these days to be completely uninteresting. I don't find Drake's music compelling at all. I think Yelawolf probably has talent, but I haven't heard anything that I've liked by him since that "Mixing Up the Medicine" song. Wiz and Mac Miller are kinda whatever. Mostly I see guys with potential, but are not and won't be able to reach it. I think maybe there's an alternate universe or alternate time where most of these guys could come out make something interesting, but now is not that time.

That said, even though I'm not wowed by any of them, I don't begrudge anyone who enjoys their music. Shit's just not for me. I'm happy listening to the new Sean Born album.

and while Drake raps about the price of fame in every damn song when he spits over a hot beat it's not bad at all.

Some of the other people on the list I don't rock with it but it doesn't really hurt my heart that they exist..

What does shock me though is the love Kid Cudi gets from his fans. I swear that dude could record a bile movement and his stans would love it.

I think my biggest frustration with Hip Hop these days is every critique or negative comment about a guy gets the "you mad" or "you old" response.

of the new artists to be garbage and that all new hip hop sucks and if you like it then your taste in music sucks like the TS is doing. There's nothing wrong with pointing out what you think are flaws in the artist or that you don't like them but this other stuff just makes you look like a bitter hater.

who come at these artists are mad though.

It's rare that they just say, "I don't like x artists music"

They usually have some inflammatory shit to say about the artist and also about the artist's fans.
Like you did above with Cudi.

That's where the "you mad" retorts come from, because honestly a lot of people do come off as /mad/ in their "critiques" of artists they don't like.

If you hate mainstream music?

The thing is this...

1) There is lotssssssssss of music out nowadays. And within hip hop........lotsssssssss of options.

No need to really complain about anything.

I think all the artists you named have some good material to listen to that i could put up against any "real" artist you name.
