Singer Davy Jones of The Monkees has died of a heart attack at 66, the medical examiner's office in Martin County, Fla., has confirmed to NBC News.
The news was originally reported by TMZ.
Jones was most famous for his role in the pop group The Monkees, which was put together in 1965 for the TV show of the same name. Their hits included "Daydream Believer," "Last Train to Clarksville," "I'm a Believer," and "Pleasant Valley Sunday." They also charted with the theme song from the show.
In 2008, Yahoo Music named him the top teen idol of all time.
After "The Monkees" disbanded in 1971, Jones sang solo as well as with various reincarnations of the group.
He also acted on stage and screen, with his most famous TV appearance as himself on "The Brady Bunch," in an episode where Marcia Brady was the president of his fan club and tried to get the singer to appear at her school dance. He also played Fagin in "Oliver!" on Broadway.
Recently, he played himself on an episode of "Sponge Bob Square Pants."
When my household received cable tv in 85 or so, the Monkees was one of the shows they showed alongside I dream of Jeannie and Bring 'em back alive (with Bruce Boxleitner who was mega in sweden due to the massive local successo of How the west was won); I enjoyed the shit out of all those shows and Monkees was my favorite.
I also like several of their songs even if they-and Davy in particular-were "products" or whatever... RIP!!!

I finally saw it maybe a year ago or so. It's pretty genuinely "out there", and the music is generally good too. It's definitely a better "film" than, say, Magical Mystery Tour, and that's coming from a huge Beatles fan. It's pretty clear that they said fuck it and basically included any and every single thing that popped in to their heads. Plus, Jack Nicholson was involved. Criterion put it out on blu-ray, so you might be able to rent it somewhere...
I am a Monkees fan, and I don't care who knows it....
They were one of the first groups as a kid that I recognized as a "music act" as I was watching those re-runs...I knew all the songs...knew the skits...And I wasn't the only black kid who enjoyed it...lol
Yeah, yeah...they didn't play or write on their own shit for the most part...But the cool thing is they showed and proved that they could if given the chance (see the Headquarters or the Head soundtrack...)..
And Jones' voice was a big part of me digging those dudes...They were a fun, entertaining group...Plain and simple....
RIP....
GOAT of his era......long live Prince.....God is alive....

Like one of those "it's a crime they aren't in the R&RHOF" fans. Davy, while my least favorite of the Pre Fab Four, always seemed like a really nice dude.
Anyone who wants to sit back and listen to not just the hits, but some great album cuts and alt takes, I have a pretty thick Spotify playlist going. Was the first playlist I made when I joined. heh (it's best played on shuffle)
