"In Performance at the White House: Red, White, and BLUES (Full Video)"

http://www.pbs.org/inperformanceatthewhitehouse/

Red, White, and Blues

"In Performance at the White House: Red, White and Blues" will honor the musical form that sprang from the Mississippi Delta and flourished in the Westside of Chicago with deep roots in Africa and slavery. The performances will explore those roots and pay homage to the great figures of the Blues and the songs they made famous by tracing the influence of the Blues on modern American music from soul to rock'n'roll. Airing on your local PBS station Monday February 27 at 9 p.m. ET.

--------------------------

Mods, my bad if this has been posted. I did a search and didn't see anything.

Did anyone else catch this last night on PBS? It was great.

Taraji P. Henson was the host. And the performers included B.B. King, Buddy Guy, Mick Jagger, Jeff Beck, Keb Mo, Shemekia Copeland, Gary Clark, Jr., Derek Trucks, Susan Tedeschi, Troy "Trombone Shorty" Andrews, and Warren Haynes.

I recognized Booker T. Jones as the house band leader, but didn't even notice some of the more recognizable band members. House band included Bobby Avila (bass), Jesse Johnson (guitar), Narada Michael Walden (drums), Ernie Fields, Jr. (saxophone), Freddie Hendrix (trumpet), and Fred Wesley (trombone).

Simplistiic view, but this is PBS so no complaints. (Yes, I'm that nitpicky, so don't mind me.)

mph. Not exactly my choices for a show like this. But then again I have no idea whom I would select if I were curating such a thing. Definitely not Keb Mo though. That guy sucks.

Nice that Shemekia gets a nod like this though.

interesting.

I'll catch it if it's on when I'm tuned in to TV (unlikely) but chances are it would end up annoying me a lot even if much of the music is good.

Mick... also a pretty good performance. Not a blues song by any stretch, which I guess is okay given the supposed scope of the program. Still if they're going to do that there should be some exposition on the link between soul & the blues, either from the MC of a musical link. Good jam

"don't know if you remember Sonny.... he was a great harmonica player... anyway."

*smh*

delayed applause for Hubert Sumlin name drop too... at least Mick's doing some educating up there. Attempt to imitate Wolf vocally not quite making it, but he DOES have the delivery *timing*, down pat, Wolf's almost conversational flow. Not bad.

the playing is immaculate, of course.

At first I thought Jeff Beck was a woman.

Funny that Barack mentions slavery and Africa, and for the second number they emphasize New Orleans's importance in the blues, and , bbut the song they use to illustrate this is (while truly a NOLA classic) actually an olde English ballad. And not my favorite rendition of it... too bad Snooks Eaglin isn't around anymore to play his version.

maybe Jeff Beck brings out a little fire in his belly.. those twin notes in Buddy's solo are sick. I tend to think of Buddy Guy resting on his (admittedly enormous) laurels*, but this is a pretty vital performance.

*Yes, I once did a post on overplaying called 'I blame Buddy Guy' but I don't think anyone read it or understood it.

the GCJ stuff I've heard previously... it's pretty clear he can play, but I've never been struck by him. While this song is kinda lame, his arrangement of the guitar part is pretty great. I kep hoping the band will kick in, but this may be the first time I've actually heard audience clapping improve a blues piece.

I will say I hope he doesn't buy into this 'The Future of the Blues' hype everyone is dumping onto him.

Shemekia's always been someone I like, but I liked her dad. Her delivery's nice enough here; I could deal without the patter to the crowd though.

Catfish Blues... a great song, decent version; he's done some interesting things messing around with the guitar lead. Vocals are okay, not super strong here. Drumming's flat to me through most of it, not a big deal though. Little pieces of organ and horn section sound awesome in the background; not sure I've heard a version of this with either before. Thumbs up in general.

I've actually got a soft spot for him because he seems like such a nice, sincere guy; he's obviously got good taste in music, and he's got a nice sound playing that steel body. (He's also not bad on the banjo, fwiw.) And he's got a way with a catchy melody, no doubt.

But c'mon, man, enough with the corn.

*edit* for that matter, on reflection, his electric solos in Let the Good Times Roll were absolutely fine, too... I tend to be more impressed with tasteful restraint than blistering speed.

Good, but kinda bland. Good picking from Derek; especially enjoyed getting to see his right hand picking style.

I don't want to hear Mick singing on it though.

Funny, I've got an Eddie Boyd version of it from '64 with Buddy Guy on guitar... he's soloing all over the place. More restrained here for sure! Buddy's vocal is way better than Mick's too.

Okay, the solo trading is a bit much for me. And thenMick shouting over it for the ending. Blah.

and I do realize how hard it is to do what they're trying to do - take an almost-extinct Black music of a long time ago and make it both contemporary and appealing to the PBS audience. But attempts like that, to take a music form with extraordinary breadth, and put it into a <1 hour neat little, multi-cultural TV show package that's going to bring in the pledge dollars... it feels kinda fake.

Overall, the music was good, if a bit bland at times, and I *am* really happy that anyone thinks blues in whatever form still has enough cultural cachet to merit a stage like this. And I love PBS, so I hope it IS successful in bringing in the pledge dollars.

Any rate, thanks for putting the post up and giving me a chance to catch it (and vent a bit).
