"What Album is a total "WASTE" of GREAT BEATS to you?"

What Album is a total "WASTE" of GREAT BEATS to you? Any genre. I mena, the production just kills the lyrics, vocals or whatever.

Plus id argue that a really good lyricist would be a distraction from the beats since they were so nuanced.

I'll go as far to say that the lyrics are tolerable (I feel like Psycho Les and Juju improved after that album, but then the beats weren't as good IMO) but considering that at the time I was an Organized Konfusion fan, the shit that The Beatnuts were on in comparison didn't cut it for me.

Yea that brian green album had really good early 90's sounding beats.

And to be honest he's better than half the people out today, even though he's not that good.

Does an instrumental of that album exist anywhere I kind of want to listen to it now. lol

Good post btw OP.

That's the most obvious example I can think of.

A lesser example of that would be the Deda "Original Baby Pa" album. Deda had more charm than the Group Home cats though, so his rhymes were more tolerable even though he was a below average rapper. He would still say some shit that would at least make me smirk from time to time.

I'm also not a big fan of InI as emcees either so throw "Center of Attention" on my list as well. Those dudes were average though. Not bad rappers, just not necessarily good rappers. But could you imagine a legitimately BEAST emcee over the "Life I Live" beat? C'mon son.

See when you think about it, when it came to J-Dilla's club type beats, it's hardly any rappers that would pick & rap over those joints other than Frank Nitty & Dank, even though I could see a few kats like Busta Rhymes or Jay-Z on those.

Secondly, "48 Hours" that was leaked & bootlegged isn't the original version, it's the reproduced version with new beats (cause the label told them that the one they gave had too many samples for them to clear) so J-Dilla created those beats just for that album, those wasn't just beats he intended for any other rappers to purchase and rap to.

I'm sure a lot of people will not agree with the Dilla response. I actually don't think Dilla is that great when producing a full LP but thats just me. Now just making a beat, he is one of the best ever. As for this post, ODB debut was almost a waste of great beats but his personality on the mic saved him..and the LP

In response to Reply # 0

I recently picked up Killarmy's Silent waepons for quiet wars (1997) in a used vinyl store. I remember listening to it back in the day when everything with the W on it had my interest, but I couldn't really remember how good it was.

Anyway, 4th Diciples beats are great. Like so dope that it makes you wonder why his career never took off. He definitely had that wu-sound, but with a jazzy edge that RZA never had. Unfortunately, besides Killa Sin and Beretta 9 who are decent, the rapping is pretty much unlistenable, not only are the lyrics cliches upon cliches but most of the members are struggling with basic stuff such as voice control and staying on beat. Rza's younger brother 9th Prince is absolutely terrible.

A total waste of great beats.

In response to Reply # 8

I actually think three of them can rap decent though. Killa Sin is legitimately good. Dom Pachino is solid. Beretta 9 is tolerable for the most part. The others end up ruining the songs, especially 9th Prince who was on damn near every song.

Well, that was the closest thing that I've heard where I was really let down with the combo of beats + rhymes. Some of the beats on that album were bullshit, too.

It was like a "typical Nas album" in reverse. The title track, especially was some bullshit. I absolutely adore that Rick James flip, but The Dromedary God had to go and fuck it up with that bullshit ass hook, and some of the verses sounded like self-parody.

In response to Reply # 0

I've heard over 20 to 30 different "Black Album" remixes and I have to say it was a lot of good beats on those, and a few that were terrible as well but for the most part, tons of beats could've been used for other rappers but I guess back then it was the "in thing" to do when Jay decided to copy Nas and release an acapella version his album, and it was a way for beatmakers to get some attention since people were seeking these remixes out.

That Kev Brown remix album were the best out of the entire batch of "Black Album" remixes next to Ninthwonder's, (btw, yeah I hated mousedanger's beatles version so don't even bring that crap up).

in fact people didn't even really start thinking about Premier as the driving force of the group until maybe their 3rd or 4th album.

Guru had a classic voice, was versatile in terms of topics/concepts, has a ton of quotables and has been the lead vocal on more great songs than most MCs you can name.

He doesn't need a pass from anybody that actually understands rap music & isn't buying into the revisionist history party lines with their boring-ass opinions about him being wack.

In 2012 Guru on the Gangstarr LP's does not impress me.

on those albums. they are what they are. Guru said a lot of dope shit on them, it always feels like he's spitting "precisely the right rhymes" ©.

I mean if everyone has to be held to the standard of Biggie and Jay then we might as well only let fifteen or twenty dudes in the studio ever. Guru on Premier is one of my great joys in life, I feel bad for people who listen to Gangstarr albums and start wondering what they'd sound like if they were Kool G Rap albums. That was never the point.

Lastly, the thread title says WASTE of good beats. So no matter what you're saying in your posts, you said Gangstarr in a thread about WASTED BEATS. You can't tell me one beat Guru wasted that I'd believe you about, not even on his Jazzmatazz joints.

my original post threw no shade at Guru I didn't disrespect him or tear him down at all.

The OP said where the beats clearly outshine the rhymes.

And with Gang Starr, the beats DO clearly outshine the rhymes.

I never tore down Guru, people just caught feelings.

Then when I pointed out that Guru isn't exactly a lyrical genius, and that the beats DO outshine the rhymes they thought I was saying Guru was whack.

I don't need super lyricism to enjoy the music, I like Gucci/Kid Cudi/Jeezy.

It's about enjoying the music.

I enjoy Gang Starr's production, and Guru is just good enough to pass; and allow me to head nod and zone out.

"waste" was and still is in quotation marks

I took it Thanes put the marks around "waste" for a reason

I took it as he meant that "wasting" a beat is something that can be done, because I don't think it's possible to "waste" a beat.

Premier made those beats for Guru, they weren't "wasted" it is what it is.

The Beats /do/ clearly outshine Guru's lyrics, that's what I took the post to be about.

Who am I to TELL PREMO HE WASTED HIS BEATS?

That would be insane, I'm not that arrogant.

Common has a few records like that.

Jin wasted a Kanye beat.

Triple C's album is a waste of great beats.

Paul Wall wasted a few beats.

where there isn't a single rapper out there who would've destroyed those beats the way he did on Carter II and III.

This is the hyperbole post. I could see Carter IV or modern lazy Wayne, but those older ones certainly weren't remotely wasted. Hell, in that era Wayne was busy destroying other people's beats regularly as is displayed on Drought III and the other famous mixtapes.

I'll say this. It was 2000-2001, and the West was on FIRE, especially in Snoop's camp. So Battlecat and Fred Wreck production? Yeah, it had better production than most of our albums at that time, and it had some dope features on it. Shit, check these tracks - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tnKHlQQPXVc - http://youtu.be/vo52e1f9q3k on that "Gangsta in me" we all heard it first on Tha Eastsidaz intro and said got damn that beat?????? I still haven't heard a beat like this before, and it still goes hard

but that was a good era in terms of Snoop, right as he was getting that No Limit stink off him & that Eastsidaz album was strong.

2000-2002 Snoop is the best era to me outside of 92-94.

Slum Village innovated a lot as far as cadence/delivery... you had cats like Common and Q Tip jacking their whole style on that tip once their tapes started circulating...and a style that, out of all of them i most closely associate with T3, really. Group Home was just sort of average.

I can't recall a less qualified rapper for such top notch production, especially on the Documentary. You could make a case for him being the worst member of G-Unit at the time if you don't count Yayo. You could also make the case for the Documentary as having the best slate of beats out of any G-unit release ever, and that includes GRODT.

Same here. I can do without Jimi was a Rock Star and Electric Wire Hustle Flower, but the rest? Dope.

A lot of The Game's songs.

I can't think of anything specific at the moment.

I'd agree that Snoop sounds lazy. But the way he rhymed the WHOLE song on "Beautiful?" His flow at Bar 9 of "Drop it like it's hot" 2nd verse?? "Run mothafucka, run!!!!" on "Vato?"

I bought the album because Battlecat produced all the beats (Except the Eminem song).
