"Greatest 2nd Songs on Albums"

I didn't want to put track # 2's because we're going to nix the intros ("It Takes a Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back") and extended entrances ("The Coming").

The "middle child" position of the 2nd song on an album is a paradox. On one hand, you have to come down from the 1st song, which grabs your attention and also sets the tone for the rest of the album. On the other hand, it also starts the build-up to the mid-section of the album.

The second song holds the difficult position of being spectacularly "unspectacular". It's a simmer piece, but it's greatness also exists in it's own bubble.

There's a few obvious ones, but I'm going to throw some out there.

Public Enemy "Don't Believe The Hype" (from "It Takes a Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back"). One of my favorite PE songs of all time, simply because Chuck was addressing different topics like the media, while still maintaining a straight lunchroom freestyle-like flow. This 2nd song represented a good body of the 1st half of this album.

Jeru The Damaja "Brooklyn Took It" (from "Sun Rises In the East"). This is a straight flow song, too. Every song on this album has it's own place and pocket, except this one...which gives it it's own place and pocket.

De La Soul "Peas Porridge" (from "De La Soul is Dead"). Technically track # 4, we have to exclude "Talkin Bout Hey Love" as a great interlude. "Pease Porridge" is the 2nd official song after "Oodles of O's", and it's one of my favorite De La moments out of all of their albums. It's funny, creative as hell, and much like my first two picks, they focused on personality and flowing.

Add on. I'd like to see some of these.

I heard "Total Kaos" in my head the second I read this. Beat kind of makes me laugh but that was a great EPMD song.

Matter of fact, #2 tracks were pretty flawless as well:

By Any Means - "Ya Slippin"
Ghetto Music - "Why is That?"
Edutainment - "Ya Know the Rules"
Sex and Violence - "Duck Down"

Throw in the early KRS albums too:

Return of the Boom-Bap - "Mortal Thought" ("Outta Here" was techincally the first track after the intro)
KRS-One - "De Automatic"

That song could've been called "De La is Dead" because it really captured the crazy randomness that we were in store for.
It was both shocking (in a feel-good way) and hilarious.
Even introspective. I guess that was the point of that 2nd song.

As far as other albums?
Nine Inch Nails- "Pig" (from The Downward Spiral)
Ministry- "Just One Fix" (from Psalm 69)
Ween- "Dr. Rock" (from The Pod)
Mr. Bungle- "Chemical Marriage" (from Disco Volante)
Idiot Flesh- "Idiot Song" (from Fancy)
Beastie Boys- "Johnny Royale" (from PB)
Prince Paul- "Steady Slobbin" (does that count???)
KMD- "Sweet Premium Wine" (was that the 2nd song on Black Bastards?)

I didn't leave or take a break, per se. Just started concentrating on other things and 2 days away quickly turned to 2 weeks, etc...Twitter was 10x easier, so I've been there. I still communicate w/ OKP's and rattle-off my hip-hop musings and random dumbness.

Good to see you're still holding it down.

25. "RE: Greatest 2nd Songs on Albums"
In response to Reply # 0

Eric B &Rakim-Mirophone fiend (GOAT second track in Hip-Hop IMO).
Entombed-Drowned (two of my favourite riffs in one ugly motherfucker of a song)
Showbiz&AG-Fat Pockets
Jimi Hendrix-Manic Deprssion (some of my favorite riffs of his)
The many Stevie Wonder-songs already mentioned-Superwoman in particular
Curtis Mayfield-Pusherman
Isaac Hayes-Hyperblahblah
Black Sabbath-the Wizard (FUCK YES THIS IS MY JAM!!!)
EPMD-Total Kaos, Hardcore
Stooges-I wanna Be your dog, Gimme Danger, Loose

Honestly, I never thought about my favourite second songs on an album and I mean that literally so this is perfunctory at best. I literally (€Again)€ need to look at my whole record-collection to make this thread justice...

I like endorphinmachine much better than p control (which I'm not sure I like at all), and it's much more amped/energetic, but at the same time it's hard for me to imagine it as a first track.
