"Adele set to move over 600 units next week"

There's a lesson here somewhere for black R&B artists, but I don't want to start a flame war.

Just let that marinate a lil.

They made black music.

Difference is, it was good music.

Or maybe I'm just a hopeless romantic yearning for that type of excitement in black music. All I know is the R&B I hear today sounds very dishonest to me.

An amazing concept that is lost on "modern" R&B artists of the black variety.

Hell, in any business, really.

Sometimes you score and sometimes you sink... It just be's that way.

Also, you characterizing Adele's music as "good" and "deserving" of kudos is highly subjective.

PS, on the topic of deserved success here's what Mary J Blige had to say

""I'm sure an Adele fan and I love what she's done this year," Blige said on the red carpet before she took the stage. "Her album was amazing. She's amazing and I'm just rooting for her. I'm rooting for everybody. But you really just want that one person to get what they deserve. Finally. And not give it to someone else because. Just win all six of her awards, you know?" "

You can say "so what", but MJB IS one of Adeles contemporaries, so her opinion to me holds major weight.

I thought "Chasing Pavements" was brilliant... didn't care for "Rolling in the Deep" as much and I haven't heard much else from the new album that caught my fancy, but I find her music perfectly acceptable.

It's just that I haven lately learned that many other people find her insufferable. That was a surprise to me because if nothing else, I would call her inoffensive. But it just indicates that the notion that her music is great is not necessarily a foregone conclusion.

The fact she's on the radio (seemingly) every other song doesn't help in this regard. She definitely is running the risk of being overexposed.

Almost every person who has an intensely negative opinion of her that I've come across mentions how they can't get away from her music.

So if you're someone who listens to the radio (or has the radio on in your office, as is my case), then I can see how it's easy to go from "eh, whatever, not my thing" to "HOLY FUCK GET LOST!" with anyone, Adele included.

She makes inoffensive music that's highly accomplished by radio-standards (a subjective opinion, sure, but I'm old) but play those songs to death and she's just as annoying as Bruno Mars-that's just the way it is; I find it hilarious when people say that all that matters is if the music is good or whatever as if music exists in some fucking vaacum...

Black R&B is in a very bad state, no denying that. But Adele's rousing success doesn't have that much to do with that.

I actually think piracy hits black artists harder... or rather, I should say artists that skew towards young, "urban" audiences

That's one of the things Adele benefits from, I think: the Norah Jones Effect in which her music has a strong appeal amongst aging, NPR-listening baby boomers who don't know how to (or are not inclined to) download music illegally .

and i suspect there are more young white ppl out there w/fast Internet connections and good computers and tech know-how to engage in the sort of 'piracy' that harms the music biz than there are young black folks doing the same.

and, of course, these young white ppl also consume a fair amount of so-called Black Musics, so that complicates the whole thing.

but yeah, more of them than us and i expect more of them to have better access to the tools of 'piracy'. so i don't think Black music gets hit any harder than other musics, necessarily. and if it does happen i'm not sure i'd attribute it to the actions of young black consumers.

fuck you.

Black artist of similar quality though. Doesn't physical appearance and image play a part in how an artist resonates with the general record buying public? It plays a part in Eminem's groundbreaking success (even though he's a legendary rap talent). That's why I wouldn't get too heavy into using actual sales numbers to illustrate your point.

For female acts, that always needs to be taken into consideration and it might be more important than race in the context of female singers.

who said all fat white woman popped or that adele dont have talent?

you do realize there have been over 300 years of racism here?? (not arguable)
you do realize that racism doesnt HELP ALL WHITE PEOPLE ALL THE TIME...??

and so your logic...that "all fat white women" is ridiculous...

let's apply that logic to history

racism don't exist cause "not all white people own slaves"

your logic is dumb.

adele is a big bitch and u cant name a big black woman who has gotten that chance...

in fact (whats shorty from the weathergirls...who did all the singing for C+C music factory and sued cuz they put the skinny bitch in the video)...you think adele can sing like MARTHA WASH?

lol

agree to disagee.

I believe it's a factor, but her talent is what is carrying her... While I think it's ok to be aware of the fact that her being white definitely isn't hurting her sales, people shouldn't take away from her talent and say she wouldn't sell if she wasn't white... She's writing a lot of great songs... She's writing music that people can relate to... Her voice is amazing... Those are the main reasons she is selling... Not because she is white...

Even with Eminem, race was a factor, but talent is what carried him...Bubba Sparxx and Paul Wall didn't sell like Em...

shes extremely talented and deserves the accolades and the awards and is making better music than her peers who are black..agreed

but race is still a huge factor imo in terms of her marketability and how she is selling...a black women could have done the same exact album and its highly unlikely that same black female artist would have sold or been half as big as adele...

not only that she is, for all intents and purposes, doing black music, at the least her music is primarily influenced by black music

at the end of the day, big picture for me, which has been said countless times already..black music has never been fully appreciated, we're not allowed differing narratives particularly in the mainstream context, yet we get appropriated time and time again

and at the same time we throw ourselves in the trap and shackles by putting out sub par music...kelis whatever pussy song she had is a prime example of this..so im not mad at adele, i guess im saying i want black music to get more respect for what weve done and how we been mistreated and used and appropriated..and i want black music to say "fuck yall, we gon do us...but yall gon love us at the end tho" lol...i feel like the 70s were like that, we did us, spoke from our experiences..the mainstream came..sure we wanted hits but the music we were making then was from out gut..adele making music from her gut, cant ever be mad at that, wish other black artists did that

but then again, goes back to my point..shes white, she can do that and be popular *shrugs* life i guess

no. no she's not.

'Rolling In the Deep' had some Gospel and Blues undertones, sure. but 'Someone Like You'? nope. and the rest of the album didn't feel like that either. except maybe 'Rumor Has It'. so, 2 songs. the rest? naw. but i'm not up on the album like that b/c i wasn't into it after i listened once last yr. i heard too many torch songs for my taste.

fuck you.

but they can't because they're black??

I don't know man... I think too many artists are just worried about getting that "hit" song and not enough about the quality... Adele's first album easily could've flopped... No songs on there screaming hit record... "Hometown Glory" is what initially caught my ear... Nothing that screams "hit" about it... Just a really great quality song... "Rolling in the Deep" I knew would be big, but I didn't think it would hit like that... I think the piano is what really helped "Someone Like You" blow up... But both those songs really aren't the prototypical hit songs...

It's really too bad that even established artists like MJB are trying to get that hit dance song and using auto tune... I don't know if it's pressure from her label or just the pressure she puts on herself to get another hit... Too worried about staying current instead of just making music from the soul...

I doubt Adele was under pressure to make a club banger or a crossover hip hop type cut. White artists aren't under the gun like that. Black artists are for some reason.

I know exactly what the OP is getting at... make good music. Stop trying to cater to the young, hipsters, euro-pop, whatever is hot at the moment... and you can achieve decent sales.

Kelis... never was a good singer but she had a niche. What did she do? Oontz oontz oontz... flop. Funny thing is I heard the first demo of a song when the project started that didn't make the album and it was a MONSTER. When I asked what happened to the song they (producers) acted like it never existed. Literally on some "what song?"

Beyonce.. huge star.. flopped on some retread Major Lazer bull. Made up a bunch of lies about what inspired the new sound. Ole girl is old, but still wants to sell to the youth. Grow the fuck up and remember who supports you.

Dance with the muthafucka you came with instead of chasing after a new sound that's old by the time it's mastered.

I don't listen to R&B as much but you can pretty much point to any one of them and I bet you they are trying to cater to an audience they have no business catering to.

That's all well and good but I don't think we are talking about the new cats who have a nice following. I think it's more about those who had a niche or have a sound but refuse to dig deeper and craft/evolve and still sound fresh.

Most cats just abandon what made them popular or interesting to cash out.

In the end you have to ask... "how is that working out for you?"

I know people who'd think that free jazz or death metal would blow up if the record-labels would push it and it's just too fucking stupid (and I'm a fan of those genres BTW). some music just isn't for ''everyone'' and some music is. Adele obviously belongs in the latter category and trying to make it all about marketing or brainwashing or whatever just doesn't work...

I feel like I've made this same post 4 or 5 times in the past 6 months... It's really amazing how she has captured basically everyone from every race and age group... And the fact that her album just keeps selling... I mean, at this point, if you really want the album, you probably know 3 people who can burn it for you... I'm really happy for her though... And 19 is still better than 21...

I got my Dad an Ipod for christmas 2 years ago because he has dialysis 3 times a week. He's damn near 70, still pimpin.. and he is an artist so he put me on to Iron Butterfly, Toto, Janis Joplin, WAR all that psychadelic shit.

Last week he calls me up on some "This Adele chick.. she is pretty good and I keep seeing her name for the Grammy's."

When I told him she was white he did a Samuel Jackson in Jungle Fever
"She's white?"

But for real, her music is really doing something special... It's rare that an artist or an album can touch so many people the way this one has... She's really bringing it back to the voice and the music (in the mainstream)... Take Whitney Houston for example... We've all probably seen at least 20 live performances from her in the past week and the majority of them are her just standing there singing... And they're all great... Nobody would wanna watch Rihanna or Lady Gaga just stand there and sing... They don't have the voices for that... They need all that other shit... Now I'm not putting Adele up there with Whitney (almost smacked a girl earlier this week for that), but Adele's voice is good enough that she can stand there and sing and have everyone sit there like, "damn, she makes that shit look effortless..."

Just heard that she's going back in the studio soon... Looking forward to 23! haha....

Open Your Eyes is my shit!

Adele's run is crazy because Gaga, and Beyonce were predicted to own 2011.

Gaga went from an egg shell to sitting at the Grammy's like an old lady and Beyonce started a family.....and Jennifer Hudson, who could have been an Adele... thinks she needs to Star Jones it to sell more records. She shoulda stayed fat. She sounded great at the Grammy's but I can't get over the way she looks. I liked fat Jenny.

Adele has no problem saying I'm fat, happy and I ain't changing for none of you blokes..

Adele is Good, but not great 1)

she has good songs, however nothing i'd call standards, she ain't no Carole King and Lawd knows She ain't no Whitney Houston 2)

America got a major foam of the mouth to blow a British act doing R&B music. our music been sold over to the other side of the atlantic for the longest time and its a major slap in the face to be honest. love R&B music and love Black Music, but don't act like that Teena marie didn't exsist? 3)

this chick is good, however she got the Click putting bank on her and it is a proven formula, whomever they want to blow up,blows up after they have hit,but make no mistake about it this chick got serious bank on the Books to making sure she is driven down our throats even if we don't like it. 4)

since Joss stone, Anastesia, Amy Winehouse to Adele the British wave of a female artist doing there take on R&B has been pushed.

IMO all this is updating Taylor Dayne. and don't act like Lisa Stansfield wasn't more interesting than what has been pushed down our throats with the British Soulful chicks over the past decade? 5)

this formula been going on and on trying to get that modern day Dusty Springfield. bottom line the industry knows what they are doing and its the same game over and over. Adele is cool and I think she might make another 1-2 records that counts, however once she gets happy or tries to break from the mold they got her in, then its a wrap. 6)

of course there is a young Black female Artist out here who can easily do what Adele is doing, and a young Black Male Artist as well and also overseas you got them, however the industry is using multi formula here with Adele, part appealing to a older demorgraphic with the Susan Boyle vocal and warm fuzzy comforter feeling crowd and also the Nook and reading at Barnes and Noble crowd. 7)

in other words to quote the Musical King of Pop Michael Joe Jackson, "they don't care about us" however they want out formula and music to sell the same ole Rainbow around the globe music in a bottle which they have always been doing. 8)

i look at any turkey sideways that opens a post and a diss toward black acts. turkey please Adele got much White Wonder bread on the books to go multi platinum. 9)

She has no sex appeal, no surrounding drama, why her?

I think first and foremost, she has great songs that everybody can relate to, young or old, black or white...and that's always a good place to start when deciding who to push.

I feel like modern black R&B artists are all about "that hit record" and it shows, often painfully so. I mean why the fuck is Brian McKnight even using autotune? So what it's just one track...why is he even dabbling with it? The list goes on.

I would just like some good songwriting for a start, but I'm still waiting. Stop being pre-occupied with "style" and just write a nice melody, put some thought into your lyrics (which is another thing, Adele writes beautifully and yet very accessibly), put some feeling into your craft. Maybe...pretend hiphop never happened for a minute. Write some songs, some real songs. Forget the club, if your shit is good it'll be remixed by somebody and make it into the club anyway (see Rolling In The Deep)

You bring up people like Whitney, well they had some great songs, and the results were obvious. We need more of that.

And again, I'm just not hearing it.

first question well Appeal is subjective 1)

and have you not listen to her music? those first albums are about that dude that dumped her. matter of fact dude is trying to get some royalitys over it and it was talked about this week. folks like drama and in music it makes for compelling story telling ask Mary J Bliege? 2)

as for brian Mcknight he has always been a great talent, however when was the last time he had a hit song? Brian ain't had nothing count since Master P had something count. been that long. acts will try anything if it means a hit.

like i said they are putting the loot on who they want, its not like Younger R&B acts don't have the goods, its so much going on and there is the fact some aren't as good or as creative as they outta be. there are factors both ways.

I agree with Maxx said, but also keep in mind that "urban" budgets are peanuts compared to pop budgets, so black artists are at a disadvantage from the start. If they don't get that hit record from the jump, then the label may abandon the project. Furthermore, mainstream urban radio doesn't support "good" r&b. Jill, Erykah, Chrissette, Anthony Hamilton etc. have all been relegated to the KISS-FM's. The "HOTs", the "Powers" and the "Beats" don't play that stuff. You don't sell records on the Urban AC charts, which is why you see Brian McKnight doing auto tune records.

The fact is, you can easily count the very small number of fat female artists, either black or white, who were successful in pop music. Adele doesn't prove anything - she's another rare exception whose voice and songs are good enough to overcome her built-in handicap. Most big female pop stars, black or white, are petite and attractive. It's always been easier for Beyonce to out-sell Jennifer Hudson, or for Britney (who has no discernible musical talents whatsoever) to be a huge star while dozens of more-talented girls the size of Adele don't even get looked at by a label. Adele proves nothing unless a dozen successes the same size as her follow in her wake - and history has shown that that doesn't happen. What labels are looking for right now is an Adele that looks like Britney. That's what they're always looking for. But in lieu of that, they'd usually rather roll the dice on Britney.

you can go back to any decade and see it for yourself. with the exception of thriller of course. Stevie was probably the top black artist in the 70's but i'm almost positive that you can find several white acts that sold more. their fan base is naturally bigger. the success of the beastie boys and eminem in hip hop is the same thing. were the beastie boys better than run-dmc at that time? was eminem better than jay or nas? they definitely sold more. with that said, the beastie boys, eminem and adele are all talented but being white is also part of their success. that can't be ignored.
