I'm not even gonna be there, but even if he just stepped on stage and said a few words, I'd be happy.

on the demo version - the song was stripped down.

If I recall or at least the version I have.

Totally changes the makeup and emotion of the song.

that immediately changes the tone as the version with the Family is fuller cause of Claire Fischers orchestral string arrangement.

So the P version is unfair to compare cause it's just the rhthym section and some keys with his vocals.

When you read about the recording of the song with St. paul and how it took him hours and hours and hours just to get a full sentence down right - it makes you look at the final alot differently.

They say that session was painful.

I have the rehearsal one but I was referencing the studio version with no Claire. I mean compare that to the album and yeah by far.

For the record I like the Family but prefer Prince's version cause of Mutiny. Sheer heat.

There is also another number on there that didn't make the album... a instrumental that's so so cold.

there is also another version floating with Claire Fischer strings if I'm correct - I have to find this purple cassette that was passed on to me by my uncle. It should be fun going thru that.

I mean the entire Family album was P.

Outside of that one concert at First Ave that I have on file - I don't recall them ever playing again. Could be wrong but that was pretty much my take on it.

I don't think they played after that, either. At least not in that config.

I was amazed how much I was able to tolerate them now. Hearing the songs live definitely helped. I saw that Eric Leeds was with them too.

I read that Prince is sticking it to them namewise, like he did to The Time.......I mean the Original Seven *sigh*.

there was an incredible article about Lionel in GQ detailing how powerful he's regarded in Arab countries. There was even this piece about him having dinner on the Mediterranean and the head of the army for Syria was on one side of the restaurant and the head of the army for Israel was on the other. Apparently both parties eat there all the time (extremely wealthy folks only) both with their families and they were not allowed to interact or even glance at one another. When Lionel was there - both men ended up at his table and even exchanged fond words for one another although it was a bit uncomfortable. According to the writer of the article - that has never happened before and has never happened since.

that made him so attractive to that part of the world was the fact he always sung songs about love, peace and people coming together. That he never exploited women, he never dressed disrespectfully or had disrepectful back up dancers. He achieved succces in a honorable manner minsu any gimmicks. I rememeber thinking "Maxx is gonna love this".

I think he's Muslim now too cause in the article he mentioned "Allah's grace" but it could have been just a sign of respect for the culture. A really eye opening read. He'd been playing Arab countries quite a bit and his fandom there is as strong as ever.

Thomas McClary is the 2nd most important Commodore
he farmed that sound out to other acts as producer (see: Michael Henderson, Klique). His solo album wasn't bad (actually it was quite good, in a George Duke-sort of way).

Losing Lionel was a crushing blow, losing Thomas put them on life support, losing Ronald (LaPread) was pulling the plug

When Clyde decided he was gonna be Miles Davis Jr. as front man and start singing over thin, so-beige-it-makes-Dancing-On-The-Ceiling-sound-like-Super-Freak pop music... that band was dead in the water. He needs some heavy music to sing over.

Bilal killed that shit there.

As did Corey Glover on 'Lady Cab Driver' with Vernon Reid sitting in on guitar.

Man I might have been on some good shit at that show but I swear that was one of my favorite concerts from a pure musical level I'd seen up to that point.

When was that, 2000?

I don't think First Born Second was even out yet.

I made a point of telling Kamal that in my most Okayplayeristically descriptive ways while he was likely waiting for the valet & trying to get the fuck outta dodge.
