"Whitney and the fear of the gay black singer "

While I was doing my daily entertainment news reading, I ran across a touching statement from Whitney's longtime friend and ex assistant, Robyn Crawford

http://www.esquire.com/the-side/music/whitney-houston-6654718

Yes THAT Robyn!!

Old school folk know who I'm talking about.
Her statement was said a lot without saying a lot of you know what I mean.
Thinking about her took me back to when rumors were swirling around about her relationship with Whitney
So I started to look around and see what info I could find
Sure I found speculations like how Robyn was x'd out of her life
Due to fam and label pressure they got rid of her
Her consolation prize was a Benz, jewelry, salary and a phone card(???)
Found speculation that there was a hit on Robyn's life.
After Robyn slapped Whit at the Super Bowl, Cissy slapped Robyn and it was a wrap after that it was a wrap
But this got me to thinking
Could that be a major part of what happened to her?
Was she having a struggle maintaining her image and denying who she really was?
What major black singer (or actor) is openly gay?
Key words....major
And why is there a fear of that within the black community?

people. Unless you knew her personally, I don't think you can pinpoint any singular aspect of the difference and say that's the core issue.
Was she spiraling downward? Was the life that she had been living all that time catching up to her? Or was it just a bad roll of the die?

I was having a conversation recently about how even if I was Tyler Perry's advisor I'd never tell him to come out the closet (we all think he's gay right? Am I being a lout right now?) because his fanbase of Christian black women would abandon him. But I felt that was cynical and only perpetuated the mindset, and besides, how can we be sure they'd abandon him?

But, assuming this Whitney rumour you bandy about is true, I think there is a perceived economic disincentive to encourage Luther, or Whitney, or whoever to come out. I believe there had to have been reams of data and research printed up before that infamous LA Law lesbian kiss, or Ellen came out on her show. There has to have been trending that indicated that a strong enough number of white women were okay with that before the heads pulled the trigger.

I think until black women vocalise their acceptance of gay black men and women and financially support one, no one is coming out. They'd have to be a popular figure to breach that topic, that could financially afford to. I think the only one who can reasonably do that is Queen Latifah, I think Whitney would have been derided and mocked is she came out, assuming she was gay.

it will just take someone to come out, sell records afterwards, before people realise it's not that bad after all. I could only imagine the lifelong torment not coming out engenders.

Everyone knows Tyler Perry is gay... I don't care if he gets married, has 50 kids... dude is gay.

Black women are funny though.. they will lie to themselves in a heartbeat when it comes to TP.

none. nobody. not a single one.
not even queen latifah.

>And why is there a fear of that within the black community?

homophobia perpetuated by the black church.
hompophobia perpetuated by hip-hop.
the fact that gender roles in the black community tend to be the least flexible.
all kinds of reasons, really...

so many (stupid) reasons.

what Im saying is when Robyn went her seperate way from Whitney it was widely suggested that the film was very similar. Almost life imitating art minus the whole conspiracy to murder Whitney. That she was extremely close to her - so much she adored her, loved her to the point of crazy - much like the character in the film.

Thats off the dome
I'm sure if I did a thorough search there would be more
But I'm at work and no time to do that
And even if that's it...the list is longer than the black folks
The length of the list isn't the point of this post bro
There's no Elton John type that's openly gay
Nor is there a George Michael
No one!!!
It's a no brainer that homophobia is a major issue in the black community that no one seems to want to address.
You won't see Queen Latifah hosting a gay cruise and televising it on HBO anytime soon like Rosie did a few years ago

homophobia isn't any bigger an issue w/blacks than it is among any other population. there's nothing really special about black homophobia.

sheesh.

and it's gross to even talk about this in the Whitney context b/c she wasn't gay.

fuck you.

Bigger in the black community than others
Not like it isn't in any other community because it is a problem everywhere
And it is an issue that's seldom talked about in the black community
Which is my point
I could care less if she was gay or not
I didn't know her
Her sexuality doesnt take away from her talent and accomplishments
But you cant front on the speculation and stories like it wasn't there.
And there's plenty of them out there.

K that's still saying a lot without saying it
As in let me say that because I don't want anyone after my ass like they were back in the day.

At the end of the day, yes she did whatever she wanted
just speculating I'm sure Arista and Fam were in her ear constantly about it
With shit like it don't look right...what would the lord think..u can't sell records with this image....blah blah blah
And (again a speculation) she chose her career.

Gotta put the disclaimer out there
Cuz I don't know any facts
The point is to discuss the homophobia within the black entertainment world

I think this question may be somewhat regional...depending on where you grew up.

I'm in Toronto.....beyond any sort of explanation and of course I'm speaking generally.....but point blank.....black people are more homophobic than white people here. And black gays, on average, have a much tuffer time with their families and communities than whites. In my perception, it's not even close and is clear to see.

Was kinda surprised to see you say that. Again, maybe it's regional? Alot of blacks in Toronto are west indian so there are cultural factors at work there that don't necessarily apply to race.

I think it's an interesting point....that gay black entertainers are more closeted than their white counterparts in pop art. And....have to say....the 'wiggle room' a gay black entertainer might have seems to be in correlation to how 'white' their audience is. A black artist that depends primarily on a black audience will face more difficult hurdles in being openly gay.

Can't say I care about the timeline of a specific celebrity's orgasm history though. People live their lives. We should live ours.

Quite a lot. Actors: Neil Patrick Harris, Ian McKellan, Chris Colfer (the Glee kid), Ellen DeGeneres, Jodie Foster, Jane Lynch. Musicians: Elton John, Freddy Mercury, Michael Stipe, Boy George, George Michael, David Bowie (actually bi, not gay), Melissa Etheridge, Rob Halford (of Judas Priest), Adam Lambert, Joe Jackson. TV writers: Ryan Murphy (Glee), Alan Ball (True Blood).

(Started Googling this and realized the list is actually way longer than indicated here - there seem to be more out celebs every day lately.)

No idea if Whitney had anything going on (I actually forgot about the Robin thing until this thread), but if she did that's pretty sad.

that was in a book? that's a crazy story (if true)

edit: even Bobby leaned toward something like that.

"In Bobby Brown: The Truth, The Whole Truth, and Nothing But..., an authorized biography, Brown said that the marriage was 'doomed from the very beginning. I think we got married for all the wrong reasons. Now, I realize Whitney had a different agenda than I did when we got married ... I believe her agenda was to clean up her image, while mine was to be loved and have children. The media was accusing her of having a bisexual relationship with her assistant, Robin Crawford. Since she was the American Sweetheart and all, that didn’t go too well with her image ... In Whitney’s situation, the only solution was to get married and have kids. That would kill all speculation, whether it was true or not.'"

i'm sorry for ppl who've never had a friend or close confidant. i've had a string of them in my life, post-puberty, and ppl have _always_ accused us of being lovers. _al_ _ways_. i've been tight w/my 1 homie since jr high school. we ended up in different high schools b/c i moved. but sr yr of high school i went to his homecoming dance b/c i'd gone to elementary school and jr high school w/that senior class and i wanted to hang w/them. my parents asked me point blank if me and the homie were 'lovers' b/c we went to that dance. i LOL'd in their faces. there was nothing like that between us and there never, ever has been. i won't even bring up our discordant sexual orientations here.

then in college i met another BFF. we were close from the 1st day of orientation all the way through graduation. we're still close now. apparently there were rumors among ppl on campus that we were fucking. that was never, ever the case. at. all. but still, ppl talked. b/c we were so close. b/c we were often spotted in public. it's silly.

post-college i met my current BFF. we've been tight for 15 yrs or so. (damn). we used to be seen on the scene around Chicago's gay hood. rumors swirled about us dating. ppl see us together now and still assume we're fucking. even though he's been w/his current boyfriend for 5 yrs. it doesn't matter. ppl's tongues keep wagging.

all i can figure is what i said initially in this reply. that ppl haven't had a close friend like the ones i have or like Whitney and Robyn had or like Oprah and Gayle have. i feel sad for them.

fuck you.

Let's remember what era Cissy comes from.

You can explain/treat drugs, but gay can't be fixed.

I mean, what you said is REAL true...I have close male friends now who I have ZERO desire to be with sexually, and they are some of the best friends of my life, but still, there's something about this connection with Robyn Crawford that rings a little weird.

There might be some truth to this...

Chaka Khan (on Piers Morgan's CNN show, last night) also mentioned how she had polyps that nearly decimated her vocal cords... and wondered if Whitney didn't have a similar condition.

but anyway,
i could totally see her having some polyps and just
never getting them treated properly.

i mean, stevie and chaka and even aretha
have certainly lost something in terms of their power
over the years... but as their voice changed,
they still figured out how to navigate through those changes
and still put it down... even if they can't wail like they
used to.

i think whitney just tried to shout through
the dammage, and she never got the surgury,
and she was yelling at bobby brown,
and she was smoking...

so yeah.

she just didn't take proper care of her voice.

then I saw her on Piers and was like, "damn, Chaka ain't looked like that in over a decade!"

(speaking of which, they had another '74 clip of her on that Unsung, from Soul Train... damn, damn, damn)

In response to Reply # 18

I don't know if that's definitive with regard to Whitney, Oprah or anyone else. Personally I think we should take people at their word unless there is serious evidence to the contrary. But on the other hand, you're burying your head in the sand if you don't think there are some big-time celebrities living in the closet, and some of those close friends are probably more than that. I do think the speculation runs rampant though, and a lot of it comes from people who just don't get close friendship.

In response to Reply # 31

Again, seemingly inspired mostly by a close friend who was with him all the time. Interestingly though, Jerry ended up involved in scientology (not sure he is any more?) right alongside two of the most talked-about actors: Cruise and Travolta. Really makes you wonder if scientology has a business going of selling straightness brainwashing (which I will from now on call "straightwashing") to gay celebs who really don't want to be gay.

A little speculation for giggles is one thing, but some people persist in talking about and starting/perpetuating rumors, and I don't see the purpose.

I do however understand the gay community's interest in it: they believe (and I think they're right) that the more hugely popular, openly gay celebs there are, the more accepted the lifestyle will become. They have a vested interest in finding gay stars and hopefully convincing them (or pressuring them, or even forcing them - not that I'm in favor of going nearly that far with it) to come out. But there's also a nasty undertone to a lot of their speculation, even - a sense of starfucking celeb-obsession, and also assigning people you don't know personality traits just because it's flattering to you personally. That's how a guy like Perez Hilton strikes me.

A.) It's not fully fair to assign that assertion to the WHOLE "community".

B.) It's not a lifestyle. It's an orientation.

C.) I think it's more along lines of, the more hugely popular, openly gay celebs there are, the more there will be of everyday regular people being true with themselves and others about what they really are - gay or not. Like it or not, more people look to who they see in the media to give them courage to be what they want or need to be in their OWN lives.

Didn't intend to, I was just generalizing as shorthand. I realize gays have lots of different opinions and are not a unified wall of groupthink. Generally though, I would say that gays *should* be in favor of public figures coming out - that's just common sense - and in my experience, the majority of them are just that.

>B.) It's not a lifestyle. It's an orientation.

You don't think general acceptance in the culture-at-large is important though? I think if I was part of a discriminated-against minority (and I'm appreciative to not be), I would be very much interested in trying to change attitudes toward my group.

>You don't think general acceptance in the culture-at-large is

Admittedly, there was a time when I cared what other folks thought of gays...so much so that I wasn't willing to admit that I was one myself.

That has changed. And this is honestly in the past 2-3 years.

Since finding out that my few real true friends could care less about who I'm fucking and care more about me as a person, my attitude is more of "I'm going to be 100% me, like it or not". That being said, I'm not as concerned with acceptance as I used to be. If being gay keeps fake, flighty or questioning people away from me, that's less fuckery that I gotta deal with, so, yay and shit.

I realize what you're saying, and I don't take offense, however, this reads like:

"If I were part of a minority group that were hated for some part of being ourselves, I'd want to change to be more accepted by the masses."

Is that where you were going with that statement?

not the way you're talking about, i mean.

but even still, it's rare.

i've always managed to make close friends...
so i guess that's why i never found oprah and gayle
to have a weird relationship.

and yeah, when people see two people w/ that type of closeness,
people assume they are fucking.

i guess i've always taken the type of closeness i have

In response to Reply # 30

people tend to tell me things
that they don't tell other people.

they open up to me in a way that they don't open up to others.
there are a number of reasons for this, i think...

first off, i'm not judgmental. people tell me things, and i
just let it be what it is.

and number 2, i don't gossip.
i don't listen to it,
and i don't tell it.
if people start gossipping around me, i change the subject.

and i guess people notice that,
b/c they start telling me things and they realize
it won't go any further than me.

now why am i saying this?

b/c i used to assume that this is how ALL friends interacted w/ each other... but i am starting to realize that people
that are a friend to people like i am are the exception, not the rule.

i've seen so many people that act like they are friends together,
but when they get around other folks, they back bite each other
and put each other's business out on the streets.

like, there's just no circle of trust.

hell... i've had friends that i've fallen out with,
and we STILL didn't air each other's shit out...
just out of respect for what we used to have.

friends where even after we drifted apart,
we could still call each other for favors if we needed them.

b/c that's what friends do. even if they drift apart,
that's what friends are supposed to do.

anyway, that longwinded answer was given to say this.
people can't conceptulaize how 2 people can be that close,
b/c most people have never had that type of ride or die bond
w/ anybody else.

so they have to turn it into something the can recognize
in order to make sense of it.
i.e. "they probablly fucking."

kind of like how folks assumed there was no way MJ could have
liked children in a pure way, b/c THEIR kids get on their damn
nerves so much. so they turned it into something else
b/c they couldn't believe it was pure.

same thing.

>>and yeah, when people see two people w/ that type of
>>closeness,
>>people assume they are fucking.

yeah. cuz i'm like that too. i don't gossip and i don't enjoy hearing it. and i distrust ppl who trade in gossip b/c i figure they're somewhere gossiping about me when i'm not around. and i can't stand that shit. i accept a certain amount of it b/c it's inevitable, but i prefer to limit gossip in my life as much as possible.

i wonder if ppl notice it. maybe they do like the ppl in your life notice that about you. i hope so. lol

Not my intentions for this post to be a rumor mill
Nor was my intentions to be a part of it
There was (and still is) major speculation running around the net
And I guess addressing those speculations and attempting to put them into context was wrong

The point of this was to address the homophobia amongst the black community and entertainment world
The rumors got me thinking on a bigger level
And I wanted to have an open discussion about why it is

Intentions werent to be disrespectful or malicious or offend
Just trying to openly express my thoughts

Won't do that again

because it kind of highlighted something else that was just weird.
like why did people go right to Robyn being her "lover"
and why was it such an issue (if it were ever true) in the first place.

Whitney, like all stars, was pretty private

what I've learned about her since her death and people spoke about her life, is that she was a real TOP DOG... like, she wore the pants in everything and insisted on things being a certain way. But she wore that mask in public. Even on Being Bobby Brown... with the whole "KISS MY ASS" thing (sorry, had to do it again).

The NBA player who played for the Kings and Suns

My boy was playing at Sac State and used to work out with some of the Kings players. He struck up a friendship with Eddie (along with Ricky Barry who would tragically commit suicide after his Rookie year) Any way Eddie invited my boy Sean down to the Whitney Houston show in Oakland where they had backstage passes. Long story short, he said after the show Whitney invited Eddie's wife back to her hotel and joked it was going to be "Girl's Night" After a few uncomfortable moments with them trying to figure out if she was joking or not, he said Whitney came up close on Eddie's wife and whispered something in her ear... Sean said she looked shocked as hell and then shook her head no... he said it was getting really loud so he couldn't hear what Eddie's wife said back but he could tell it was a "no". A few days later Eddie told him Whitney really was asking to sleep with her.

This is second hand knowledge but knowing my boy he wouldn't lie about something like that.

I find it hard to believe that a drug addiction would be better for Whit's image than being a lesbian

if it was possible to hide her sexuality from the public for so long, why wouldn't they also hide her addiction

Tracy Chapman was big around the same time as Whit

I didn't need evidence of her being a lesbian

it was just implied

and it didn't seem to hurt her career

There is no way that a Whitney Houston lesbian affair would produce no proof

an interview with an ex-lover

a sextape

a photo

anything

Seriously.

I mean I agree that the gay community tends to think everyone and they mama are gay... and that shit can be annoying as fuck.

but Luther was clearly as gay as Tyler Perry. In fact more so.

Lyte/Latifah/Lynque (sp) aka Isis have been associated with gay parties now for almost two decades in both New Jersey and New York.

You have to be kidding me.

are referencing comes from the generation prior. Different ball game. However Sylvester and Jermaine Stewart where of that generation - so also add different markets. Pop/R&B stars versus underground/club/house/avant garde stars.
