"I don't get how Late Registration is >> The College Dropout"

Late Registration is cool and all but I don't get it when a lot of people say it's a better album than The College Dropout. To me, Kanye's best and opus album is The College Dropout. CD is just a dope album from start to finish, great singles and great non singles. While I think some of Late Registration is cool and all, it just doesn't compare. I think when it comes to Late Registration I enjoy the music or beats rather, more so than I do the actual songs and even sequencing of the album. It doesn't flow like The College Dropout does. After about midway through the album it sounds spotty and not like one sound. I think had he just stuck with one sound with the production it would've been better. Like The College Dropout sounds like one complete sound on the production side of things. That album is better because of the songs, sequencing, and one sound. I might be the only one who thinks so but Late Registration just sounds more like a handful of good songs instead of an album while The College Dropout sounds like a complete album.

and verses.

It's one of those where that first album was basically like 28 years of work (however old he was then) and the next album was like a year and a half's work, if that....so of course, the first one is great in different ways.

LR expands CD's world view and has a richer sound

I get why people would prefer CD over LR, though... it's a pretty simple hip hop record in comparison to LR, though

Song for song it wins by a landslide. CD wasn't nearly as focused. The skits make it almost impossible for me to listen to it now. Whereas LR can damn near be played without skipping.

For nostalgia alone.

I also love how Kanye isn't taking himself too seriously on this album. A lot more humble, hungry and humorous. Even the wacker skits, the workout song and the obvious punching in Kanye does after like a line and a half of rapping.. I fucking love it all *kanye shrug*

no replay value in 2012. I still spin Late Registration now and then, College Dropout sounds dated.

Spaceship, Two Words, and Never Let Me Down are the only tracks on College Dropout that still have value to me.

I don't think College Dropout is as cohesive as Late Registration, I end up having to skip tracks which is why I never listen to it anymore; for me to play an LP it can't have skip-ables.

I almost thought this was a shock post when I first saw the subject b/c I've never heard anyone say Dropout > Late Registration.

As if you caint enjoy music that sounds like it's from another era? If
you caint, ok fine but that don't mean the music ain't good. As much
as the negros talk about Rakim, KRS ONE, Big Daddy Kane and all that,
DATED shouldn't be an issue.

does stale work better than dated?

Age has nothing to do with it, really; well it kinda does....

hmmmmm KRS-One, Rakim and them their music obviously, sounds dated, but it's not "stale".

No what I'm saying? It's timeless.

College Dropout is not a pleasure to listen to, like Paid in Full/Return of the Boom Bap.

When I was 12 I thought through the wire was an AMAZING song. Now nah I skip that shit heard it way to much on the radio, and it's not even that great of a song. All Falls Down is tight though.

But LR
Drive Slow
Heard Em Say
Roses
Bring Me Down
CRACK MUSIC
We Major
MY WAY HOME
Addiction

C'mon son. Late Registration is classic.

College Dropout... nah?

it's all opinion though so w/e.

I think CD's best songs (All Falls Down, Spaceship, Never Let Me Down, Jesus Walks) are better than the best songs on LR, however, from start to finish, Late Registration is the stronger project, IMO.

As well, the skits on College Dropout feel less useful than the ones on Late Registration.

Looking back, I'd rank CD a strong @@@@, and LR a @@@@1/2. So not as if the projects are miles apart in terms of quality.

better rapping. really good songs too: "roses" "hey mama" undeniable (or unavoidable?) "golddigger"

bigger production. he got jon brion...HUGE wtf??? that actually worked. the music exploded off the speakers: "we major" "gone" "diamonds" the end of "celebration"

as it's always said, he didn't go the easy route and give us CD2. he did some brave shit and worked.

and speaking of brave, he got nas before the jay-z beef was deaded...when jay was his boss! that, and coming out against homophobia when the album dropped really stood out. and the music was really good too.

had the idea to work with Jon Brion on what would I guess have been The Tipping Point. However, KanYe got wind of the idea and booked time with Jon Brion before The Roots did, thus negating the novelty of Jon Brion working with hip-hop.

i kinda wish ?uest had went ahead and did it anyway because I think it would have led to some work more musically complex than the more pop leanings on LR.

Never heard that story.

Is ?uest salty about it? He seems to praise Kanye often so I guess not, but if I were him I'd be fired up about that.

gotten over it. I think from posts he's made around here that he's more salty that KanYe has never reached out to work with him or Thought and since they kinda share similar fans (although KanYe has more of them) it would be a natural step to let The Roots shine on a KanYe record so that The Roots could get some more exposure.

i think there was some beef between KanYe and Thought because KanYe was a twitter about something he *thinks* he heard Thought say, but i think that eventually got deaded.

but yeah for a while I think ?uest was angry (and rightfully so) about the situation.

The link I posted was in regards to the GOOD Music/Roots beef and how hard it was doing the project with John Legend. As for the Brion stuff.... first time I heard about it, ?uest had talked about it back in the old chatroom. And then it fell through. You can see a taste of it here: http://qoolquest.blogspot.com/

by this time the beef was essentially dead, and he wasnt even the first person to get both of them on his album since the beef started (see: the fix)

how dead was it in late 04-early 05 when "we major" was recorded? i didn't think they were COOL cool until they did interviews together, and then jay appeared on "black republicans" which officially meant dead to me.

different with scarface. kanye was completely under jay's wing.

but LR just sounds more musical to me if that makes any sense. LR is IMO his best work, but none of his shit is really wack so it's all debatable.

"bring me down" is really bad.. but other than that.. the album is really really good.. i still like Graduation and MBDTF better.... maybe even watch the throne too.. but honestly, kanye is getting to that territory where i don't even like saying which one i like "better"... all of the albums are completely different... the closest are probably CD and LR.. and the latter sounds like a more refined version of CD's style and really, it's like when he "put it all together".. CD was the draft.. Graduation is basically the prototype 00's pop rap album.. MBDTF is the untamed opus
