"When was last time 1 Producer Produced an Entire LP? "

When was last time 1 Producer Produced an Entire LP?

Maybe I'm getting old but back when one producer produced an entire LP the record had a "Sound" to it that I personally miss. Back with Tribe (Q-Tip), Wu Tang (RZA), Gangstarr (Premo), Mobb Deep (Havoc)
Chronic & Doggystyle on up to the late 90's and early 2000's with Dilla Sound, Kanye Albums, hell even the 2 Little Brother LP's (w/9th Wonder)the artist LP's had focus and didnt sound like mixtapes. I personally like that style (of course Pete Rock & Cl Smooth joints) much better. So...

1. When was the last artist or group to use this format?
2. When was the last LP produced in this manner?
3. Do you prefer that style or the way LP's are made now?
4. Are there any combinations of artist and 1 Producers that you would like to hear?
5. ...Random comment

me:

1. I think Blu & Exile "Below the Heavens" is the last one I remember or really like
2. No sure when the last LP made in this style was released
3. I prefer one producer as I stated above.
4. Nas and Premo ....
5. RZA created the entire Wu Tang sound and at times people overlook him as one of the top 5 producers (well, I think he is)..

a good example of a recent one is the Jake One/Freeway jaint, and to me it's his best overall album

I agree with one exception
most of Kanye's work has been co-produced or has him rapping over beats another producer did that he MAY have added gloss to

>1. When was the last artist or group to use this format?

happens more often than people think

>2. When was the last LP produced in this manner?

see #1

I prefer the one producer method for a lot of reasons, most of which you named

>4. Are there any combinations of artist and 1 Producers that

lots of them but I can't name just a few

>5. ...Random comment

I think that single producer albums with short tracklistings make the best music, with Moment Of Truth and Mecca being the two exceptions that come to mind

Pilot Talk also has only like 2 non Ski tracks.
Muscle Car Chronicles is entirely produced by Sean O'Connell

Madlib - Madvilliany, Liberation, In Search of Stoney Jackson, O.J Simpson, and projects with Gibbs and Blu coming out this year

Be by Common was very almost a Kanye entirely produced record.

Alot of Odd Future mixtapes/releases have come out with this format (Rolling Papers has like 2 non Tyler tracks, same with Earl, Bastard, and Goblin were all but 1 Tyler. Mellowhype is entirely Left Brain)

Big K.R.I.T, and Danny! stay producing their own shit entirely.

Every Clipse album (though its 2 producers), except When the Casket Drops which has like 5 non neptunes tracks.

40 was 7/14 on TML and 13/18 on Take Care

Dr. Dre - Relapse

Lex Luger is all over Flockaveli 12/17

And Nas pretty much had this one producer album recently with Distant Relatives (all produced by Marley bros)

You know who DOES need to get in the fucking studio with one guy and one guy only though

Wayne.

and with.....

Bangladesh. Agreed?

vision/feel/sound of an album IS producing... beatmaker isn't the only thing that "producer" refers to... as a matter of fact, kanye's tweaks are more in the vein of the original definition of "producer"... when i see "co-produced" by kanye, i assume he didn't come up w/ the meat of the instrumental tract... but he prob. did everything to it that makes it *work* w/ what he's trying to accomplish.. which i think is the producer's most important role..

1. Er Jake One just dropped an LP or EP with some guy from Seattle I just read on one of these threads around here.

2. The Jake One and Frank Luciano one, if it's an LP I'm not sure.

3. I prefer the one producer sound, I don't have a problem with many producers though as long as they work together and create a cohesive sound. When LP's have 20 different tracks, one for the club, one conscious song, one southern bounce, one for the ladies etc. and they all sound different sonically is when I hit stop.

4. Nas and any ONE producer. That's all I desire. Oh and more Jay Electronica and Just Blaze.

5. werd.

Just about every Curren$y project is with one producer, KRIT produces his own stuff, the aforementioned Statik joints, Jake One/Freeway, all Brother Ali and Atmosphere albums...

I definitely prefer it to albums with like 10+ different producers, but I feel like it's still beneficial to have 3 or 4 while still maintaining the vibe/quality.

I'm not sure when the last time was, but I'm pretty sure this is still happening.. constantly. So I would say.. today?

Someone else mentioned Madlib and also Jake One as producers who do this pretty frequently. They also mentioned KRIT as always producing for himself. He should be producing entire albums for others: Bun-B and/or Scarface would be good ones.

Black Milk did this for Random Axe, Black & Brown, himself, and for Elzhi. He should probably do an entire Royce album.

Exile does this a lot.. for himself, Emanon, 2 albums for Blu, and Fashawn's "Boy Meets World" (which was great, BTW).

I would love to hear a big name like Jay-Z over all PUTS production on an LP.

..the same for someone like NAS over all Oddisee production.

It will never happen, but whatever.

But as others have said, it happens all the time, especially when you considered non-mainstream cats.

Willie Evans Jr. produced his entire album last year, and that was my favorite album of 2011. Another one that I liked a lot, but did not much love, was Marq Spekt and Kno's "Machete Visions."

established it actually happens quite often.

Phonte and Kno

Monch and El P

Monch and Exile

Nas and...whoever. He REALLY needs to try this format though. Pick one (Premo, Alc, No ID, Exile...pick one)

Aloe Blacc and Exile...oh wait

Skyzoo and Ski

Blu and Flylo

Mos Def and...Madlib. And I've always been curious what a Mos and Ye album would sound like too...

Planet Asia and Quik

Finale and Oddisee

Lupe and...who is that due who used to lace him? Soundtrak? Or Lupe and Pharrel

Except, the Mos and Ye one would've interested me in like ... 2007 and prior. Kanye's recent music is too pretentious to give Mos the type of musical atmosphere he strives on IMO.

(produced by Fluent)

Curren$y & Alchemist "Covert Coup"
Statik Selektah & Action Bronson "Well Done"
Exile "4-Track Mind"
Common "Dreamer/Believer" (prod. No I.D.)
Black Milk & Danny Brown "Black and Brown"
Random Axe "Random Axe" (prod. Black Milk)
Pete Rock and Smif'n'Wessun "Monumental"
Cunninlynguists "Oneirology" (prod. Kno)
blu & Exile "Give Me My Flowers While I Can Still Smell Them"

These are what I could think of from I guess the past year or so.

Madlib does it all the time, too. Wasn't sure if remix/mixtape albums count, though.

1. When was the last artist or group to use this format?

Guess it would have to be Common w/ No I.D.

2. When was the last LP produced in this manner?

Common "Dreamer/Believer"

3. Do you prefer that style or the way LP's are made now?

Well, for myself a lot of the albums I cop are either produced by one producer or a tight-knit squad of producers so albums still come off focused. OR, if it is the buffet-route, the MC's I like the most take care to craft an album that doesn't sound scatter-shot.

I tend to listen to a lot of instrumental projects, too, which are usually one-producer albums (I assume you were talking about albums with rapping, though).

4. Are there any combinations of artist and 1 Producers that you would like to hear?

Planet Asia and Madlib (that little EP from December doesn't count as it was all previously released beats, although it was nice teaser)

I'm sure there are others, that was the first that came to mind. T

was the first joint I thought of. Also Madlib and Freddie Gibbs. Madlib and Georgia. M.O.P and The Snowgoons. Is Invincible's whole album gonna be Waajeed-produced?

I wish more artists would go this route, but after reading others' responses, I realized it's happening more nowadays than I thought.

4. As someone else mentioned, a full Planet Asia/Madlib joint would make me happy. Also me/M.O.P

Probably the best recent example in my mind...the synths, 808s, horns and all worked very well for Stalley's flow. Hopefully they work together on his MMG debut.

Streets won't let me chill.
