And exactly how does this make her "important"? Her antics are about as important as Kenny Powers flipping mofos off once a week on HBO.

& theres nothing more important or worthy of admiration then getting paid

people avoid any kind of controversy other than what can be construed as sexual...shes adamant abt her politics & presents them in a framework that the youth can hear, accept, understand & learn from

i dont see anyone producing a video illustrating the israeli/palestinian conflict in an accessible way that CLEARLY presents the israelis as the villains

Then just say that.. Don't reference a haphazard finger as evidence of it. The new bad girls single bangs but I don't see her ever breaking through to Rihanna heights of success.

In terms of balancing a message along with cutting edge music, she's up there with public enemy. Having said that....her influence on a large scale is limited.

but thats not important now is it?

which is kinda the point

she could do a beyonce type record & make scads MORE money...but beyonce could never make a record liek born free now could she...much less that kind of video

the fact that the closest band you can think of to equate her impact to is Public Enemy basically proves my point

do or die

Unlike the hipster faggotry that Lessonheads like,
she's actually hip and has tons of appeal, style and
sex appeal

Bitch really don't care much about anything

Prolly cares about nerdy niggas less than your
favorite underground backpacker

The bitch is just dope

She is ENGINEERED to make nerds mad in 2012

So no, nigga

She had a broad reach

black women LOVE(D) M.I.A...LOVED, not an opinion, fact.
there's a reason she's performing with TI and all them niggas
at the Grammy's...niggas actually fucked with her tough

Not debatable

Of course Hipsters liked her at first, because Hipsters
like Asian women in general

Hipsters got OFF the bandwagon the minute she got
popular, because Lessonhead hipsters are a bunch of
insecure dicks

it doesn't fit in with your storyline that you've invented. Yeah, she had a serious backlash FROM hipsters as well, but without them she wouldn't have the career she does. She certainly wouldn't have been on stage with Madonna last night.

You really feel this strongly about M.I.A.? I liked her first record. The one with 'Paper Planes' on it was alright. Her last one was trash.

She'll go down in history as a one hit wonder.

...that throw around the term "one-hit-wonder" when referring to artists who have a significant dedicated following/fanbase outside of commercial recognition.

I hate to sound pretentious- but it's so cliche- so mainstream- so square for people to label people "one-hit-wonders" just because they weren't cool enough to discover their music earlier on. M.I.A. has had a dedicated fanbase since 2005 when Arular was released. Where were you at?

I mean, HELLO THIS IS OKAYPLAYER, a website that caters to alternative/underground music artists and their fans. Did you forget that?

Who cares what the masses consider relevant- the masses is always late to everything. The masses is always out of the know about what's relevant. the masses is lame. The masses judge the success of an artist by monetary gain and record sales.

*sigh*

It has nothing to do with whether she's an artist with only one good song. It doesn't matter whether she *is* a one-hit wonder.

She'll be perceived that way, just like all one-hit wonders are.

Whoopdee fucking do.

You do realize, that there is a large body of people who could care less what mainstream audiences think... such as the folks who started this website.

i would agree maybe not most important, but on the top of the list.

1) she has her pop's revolutionary street cred

2) she makes music ahead of the curve

3) her music is intelligent, but playful enough that anybody can enjoy it. which actually makes her even more subversive. like it seems like some kid bullshit, but if you pay attention she saying her and her folks from the bottom are coming for blood most of the time.

4) she isn't really a culture vulture as she has mined her own pretty thoroughly.

5) she is a tastemaker

6) she married into money, she ain't gotta give a fuck.

I love Maya but don't let her persona or antics fool you. Homegirl is more on the Madonna side of the tracks (a pop provocateur who fuses a honest agenda for freedom with the desire to get "stupid paid") than Chuck D and 'nem.

'Born Free' was gullier than any PE video imo

And even 'Paper Planes' was openly about robbin niggas
and shit

That's what's funny about the shit: she really turned the
gangsta/swagger/hustler shit on its head

She never really proclaimed to be "conscious" about shit

She is *political* but hardly *positive*

She really don't nary a fuck about the political opponents
she don't like....she support niggas who suicide bomb on
the reg

I mean, if its okay for Snoop to support groups that
(crips) that have terrorized black neighborhoods for
decades, than you can't really be mad at her for her steez

Difference is that she has prolly read a book and
followed the news at some point

Dumb gang supportin niggas are just sensitive thugs

>I love Maya but don't let her persona or antics fool you.
>Homegirl is more on the Madonna side of the tracks (a pop
>provocateur who fuses a honest agenda for freedom >rooted in politics while while Madonna's was rooted in sex]
>with the desire to get "stupid paid") than Chuck D and 'nem.

Ok, but Madonna ain't never have no shit like 'Born Free'

All of Madonnna's "political" shit is super subversive
and symbolic

And even MIA's pop swagged out shit is low key anti-Western

She gives nary a fuck about being preachy, though, I'll
give you that

She kinda just does what she wants and sorta sees her success
in general as a middle finger to the establishment, which is
sorta true

And unlike Chuck D, she actually lived *with* actual refugees
with bounties on they head, running from country to country

And the Tamil Tigers (whom she's *openly* supported) are
waaaay gullier than any group Chuck supported

I know militant niggas who think the Tamils are too extreme

Why you so mad? I obviously touched a nerve.

M.I.A. has some of the loudest haters, but look at the thread about her new single. Two thirds of the responses were from people that liked it. Look at this thread - this isn't stanning? And Kanye had to become basically the biggest current pop star to get people here to stop bagging on him. Remember him being called "Conyay Mezz" or whatever the fuck that was? Remember the gangbang of hate that went down every time he did some egotistical thing in public? Remember the Taylor Swift fallout?

Do some surveys and come with some hard numbers, or shut the fuck up. This is some serious "nobody believed in us, but we showed THEM!" bullshit. Lots of artists get hated on here; many of those artists are still more liked than hated, if you were to poll people rather than just focusing on the loudmouths.

She just seems to get more and more obnoxious w/time, and the music... far less worthwhile...

Subversion is noble, but I don't think it does her any favors...

I'm listening to sports radio on the way to work and they were joking about how unoriginal and tame a middle finger is after nipple gate.

Now, it definitely puts MIA's name in people's mouths (even though most are saying who is she and why was she up there) but it was corny.

The problem with MIA... in my opinion is too much of what she does isn't about the music... I know, she is a rebel and the hardest of the hard... but she is married to the heir of a billionaire and we all know that is gangster.

Oh.. and yes. I'm mad. LOL....

LOL--what kind of criticism is that?

She isn't trying to start nuclear warfare or end genocide
around the world with a middle finger

She just gave a middle finger. It was in the context
of the fucking song. Jesus Christ, just fucking STOP.

She doesn't care. She married rich, sells records, is gonna
raise her son good and is gonna eat real, real, well.

Literally her only problem are faggot hipsters. Literally.

Right, like Kanye and Jay and Beyonce and thousands of other
fucking people in the industry...LOTS of people..LEGENDS are
about more than their music...Winehouse was at LEAST as popular
for her behavior as her music (I barely listened to her,
liked the stuff I heard, but she was mostly famous for being
reckless in love and a drug addict)

LOL @ you fucking hipsters. She actually doesn't bring
attention to herself any more than anyone else, she just
does her music shit and Y'ALL get mad. That is YOUR problem,
not hers.

If you ASK HER HOW SHE FEELS about the Tamil Tigers, she's
gonna fucking tell you.

If you get mad, that is YOUR problem

I'm pretty sure the vast majority of people only know her

"for that song about paperplanes."

let alone even realize what her message is all about, or where she's from.

Hipsters made her what she was, and paperplanes crossed her over it was her one shot at mainstream fame. She had it for a while, but now she's out of the spotlight.

The middle finger was to stir up conversation with her new LP coming out, mission accomplished.

MAYA sold 28k in its first week then shit crashed because the hipsters turned on her and she doesn't have mainstream support b/c their wasn't a paperplanes level single.

Kala 29k but paperplanes boosted it up to 500K.

You guys are really overestimating her significance over here in the U.S. she isn't all that.

You didn't have to go see the movie to hear the song. Movie's spend a ton on advertising and Paperplanes wouldn't have been in everyone's living room without that ad.

Nothing wrong with cross promotion but where else did America hear that song? It's not like radio blasted it night and day.

But now the 31-year-old has crossed over with her Clash-sampling single “Paper Planes,” which received a huge boost by being featured on the Pineapple Express trailer. After the jump, EW talks to M.I.A about her newfound success and why it’s really messed up her early retirement plans."

Debate my actual arguments.

Debate what I've said.

Y'all try to be flippant because you're simply not
smart enough to have a conversation.

Debate me.

Any point you raise, I'll answer.

if you want fun, complete with big vocals over big beats, Gaga is superior; essentially Iovine's second attempt at Madonna 2.0 after Mya flamed out, and with no end in sight.

if you want entertaining raps accompanied by futuristic walls of sound, Nicki Minaj is superior; making a legitimate case for being the second Wayne protege to eclipse Wayne's starpower. Her upside is bigger than Mya's ever was, and she hasn't even figured out who she is yet.

and, of course, if you like when your stars are actually every bit as qualified for the praise that's heaped upon them, then Beyonce is the original CGI-free Empire Strikes Back compared to Mya's Phantom Menace.

MIA is cut from the same cloth as Kid Cudi, Odd Future, Lana Del Ray, Smith Westerns, that being an act that simply would not have broken through if it weren't for the internet and the hipster-driven blogosphere that's risen to prominence over the last 10 or so years. There's so little substance there it's mind numbing. Now, conversely, that same blogosphere has been hugely influential in breaking acts like Arcade Fire, the Black Keys, and Mumford and Sons. But MIA is not of this ilk.

That you openly support such a boring, manufactured
artist shows me what I'm dealing with.

In regards to "talent" being "minimal"

A good half of the most famous artists ever weren't even
close the most *talented*

Janet Jackson, Madonna, Mariah Carey, Britney Spears,
Aguilera, etc etc etc were at least 70% song writing and producing
combined with a "look"

MIA is no less talented than all of them chicks

And her schtick and angle are far more original, bitch
shouts out Tamil Tigers on her records...none of them
hoes do any of that, sorry

*swish*

>if you want fun, complete with big vocals over big beats,
>Gaga is superior;

Gaga's music sounds like noise to me, and I like hip hop
with a gully angle, and Gaga doesn't do that. M.I.A. does.
Her music is gullier than any rapper out IMO...rappers are
soft pussies who lie about being crack dealers and gang
members

I don't give a fuck what kind of wealth MIA married into,
she was raised as a refugee by a nigga who was on the run
and fucked with the Tamil Tigers...that's more gully than
any rapper who sells records....its true, not debatable.

*swish*

essentially Iovine's second attempt at
>Madonna 2.0 after Mya flamed out, and with no end in sight.

Madonna isn't nearly as provocative, doesn't run with
groups labeled officially as terrorists.

And Madonna's real talent is learning how to recruit
homosexual artists in her circle...that's really what
her fame is the result of, no hate, because I like her

*swish*

>if you want entertaining raps accompanied by futuristic walls
>of sound, Nicki Minaj is superior; making a legitimate case
>for being the second Wayne protege to eclipse Wayne's
>starpower. Her upside is bigger than Mya's ever was, and she
>hasn't even figured out who she is yet.

Minaj's schtick is already old. She can rap well, which is
why I support her but she's trying the "saturate the market
with myself" strategy (a good one) because she is going to
fall VERY fast because she doesn't really care about anything
and has a wildly superficial fan base

Her fall will be about as fast (or faster) than 50 Cent's

50 had the same problem: no REAL allegiance from fans. It
was all superficial

M.I.A. has a real angle: the 3rd world shit, the guerrilla
shit.....its a gimmick, all right but its a dope, effective
one and is why she's different. Its far more sustaining.

>and, of course, if you like when your stars are actually every
>bit as qualified for the praise that's heaped upon them, then
>Beyonce is the original CGI-free Empire Strikes Back compared
>to Mya's Phantom Menace.

Lulz

Beyonce.

Nigga, shut the fuck up.

>MIA is cut from the same cloth as Kid Cudi, Odd Future, Lana
>Del Ray, Smith Westerns, that being an act that simply would
>not have broken through if it weren't for the internet and the
>hipster-driven blogosphere that's risen to prominence over the
>last 10 or so years.

Lulz

Kid Cudi is from Cleveland and whines about being mixed
and weird. He's got fantastic production/ear for beats
but cannot rap a christmas gift

Odd Future are transforming into a clothing and iconography
company because their music sucks (its clear at this point
that their music has little to do with their fame at this
point)

Awful comparisons

>There's so little substance there it's
>mind numbing. Now, conversely, that same blogosphere has been
>hugely influential in breaking acts like Arcade Fire, the
>Black Keys, and Mumford and Sons. But MIA is not of this ilk.

LOL. What ilk?

Mariah and Christina are great singers, stop it.

I do feel you on 3rd world rebel groups being 'gullier' than gangs, or at least something different...but for me that doesn't automatically translate into music I want to listen to.

Mariah is famous because she was a "white girl with
Soul" ala Estelle and them

Aguilera was a soulful skinny bimboish blonde

That is why they are famous.

They *happen* to be talented, but the talent is a
bonus

Songwriting, production and marketing is what made
their fame

At least Aguilera absolutely sucks at it. Mariah does a bit better but I personally find her ideas a bit bland.

someone who responds with "you mad" or "she made nigs mad"

The fact that you were deep throating OF only to turn on them when the album didn't impress is a prime example of someone who flips and flops.

If MIA goes wood or the album stinks then what? Is she still everything you say she is or will she get the OF venom?

A middle finger by a cheerleader saying "supersonic bionic uranium" or whatever she said during a Madonna performance is lazy.. not sure why you are spending this much energy and emotion on her.

Ben Brewer, guitarist of the Exit and son of Warner Music CEO Edgar Bronfman Jr., one of the richest families in the US.

When he asked me out on a date, I thought, 'I don't know,'" she continues about Brewer, with whom she's also expecting a child. "It's like crossing over to the other side. I've always had that fuck-the-system mentality, and his dad is so 'the System.' But then, they're the most liberal family -- they bootlegged alcohol, for God's sake. They're rich because they threw big, illegal parties, so I don't mind.

"Still, I know I'll catch flak," she admits. "But I think I would've been screwed either way. I kept dating guys who were broke, who came from the streets, or from backgrounds like mine, but they didn't necessarily treat me any better. My fiancé is really a great guy."

Props for (usually) trying to be different in a sea of unoriginality, however, I always feel like I'm left wanting more.

What's clear to me is she needs a strong collaborator, a producer who can guide her in the right direction. If not Diplo, then someone.

Part of me wonders if music is even her right lane. Maybe writing or filmmaking or art? She certainly has something to say, which is more than you can say for 99% of her "peers".

Diplo is not a "strong collaborator"

She's actually a very talented artist in several realms and
music is far from it for her

After you pulled the classic O_E 'Hipsters HATE MIA' and someone countered that really she was a hipster phenom you said...

-------------------------------------------------------------------
"So no, nigga

She had a broad reach

black women LOVE(D) M.I.A...LOVED, not an opinion, fact.
there's a reason she's performing with TI and all them niggas
at the Grammy's...niggas actually fucked with her tough

Not debatable"
-------------------------------------------------------------------

WRONG NIGGA(c).
That love came over three years into her career and after the commercial from 'Pineapple Express' made it a universal hit. Black girls fuck with LMFAO off of 'Sexy and I know it' but I don't think you can argue that black girls made em popular/built up/or will sustain their career. Her continued existence (especially after the first critically acclaimed but nowhere near popular Arular) for the first four years of her career was all due to the blogosphere and Pitchfork. Paper Airplanes was the FOURTH single released on the album that everyone universally ignored for six months outside of guess who? nerds and hipsters

Another classic alternate universe O_E comment in the post was this...

-------------------------------------------------------------------

"And even MIA's pop swagged out shit is low key anti-Western

She gives nary a fuck about being preachy, though, I'll
give you that

She kinda just does what she wants and sorta sees her success
in general as a middle finger to the establishment, which is
sorta true

And unlike Chuck D, she actually lived *with* actual refugees
with bounties on they head, running from country to country

-------------------------------------------------------------------

WRONG NIGGA (C)

lol. She gets a cookie? I mean System of a Down was twenty times more subversive and direct at the time with a hit song called 'Bring your own Bombs' with lines like 'We all live in facist nation' talking about genocide, wilding out on Saturday Night Live. Being anti war post GW Bush is a no fucking brainer (with very little repercussions). Bitch wasn/t saying shit when it mattered, lol...just doing her wack ass dances talking about sunshowers. Dixie chicks >>>>>>>>>> M.I.A.'s political activist. LOL@ bigging up her cred cause she's had some third world hardship...in that case every African artist is harder then her.

---------------------------------------------------------------------

Despite your blatant fanboyism, you did help point out two anti-MiA fallacies in this post

1)She's more talented then this post gives her credit for. She may not be the strongest singer, but she can keep a basic note. She may not be the strongest rapper, but she stays in her lane with her one solid flow and doesn't attempt to sound wittier then she actually is (*cough*minaj*cough*). But she is a SOLID songwriter, she's co-writtn or written everything shes performed. She's worked with a wide variety of producers besides Diplo, and considering how dope "Bad Girls" is, she will continue to have good songs. The 'strong collaborator' dig is just nonsense; like pretty much everyone in hip-hop/pop/r&b she just needs a dope beat to write on, lol. It's like saying Missy sucks because she needs a 'strong collaborator' like Timbaland, lol. She's worked with french electro/hipster dance/ and now traditional hip-hop/r&b producers and has consistently put out quality work that stays true to her core sound, it's no accident.

2)Pointing out her marriage is a pretty weak argument because her apex was before the dude walked in the picture I happened to see 'The Exit' and the dude is just a generic skinny BK blipster type. People make it sound like she was partying at the Ritz and ran into a tuxedo dude, when she probably ran into him at some williamsburg bar looking scruffy as shit. Plus even if she was rich it has nothing to do with her politics, hell Bin Laden is a multimillionaire

You gave an HONEST effort. I appreciate it.

>WRONG NIGGA(c).
>
>This was like three years into her career and the commercial
>from 'Pineapple Express' made it a universal hit.

LOL -- No, it didn't. I don't even know what the fuck
that movie is.

And in *this* post you got hipsters saying it was
Slumdog Millionaire that really took it to the next
level.

So you guys can't even agree on which hipster argument to
use to discredit her:

- A random Pineapple Express movie that is not responsible
for her success

- Slumdog Millionaire, which used the fucking song literally
years after it was popular

Get your hipster arguments correct, because your signals
are crossed and its fucking up your argument.

>Black girls
>fuck with LMFAO off of 'Sexy and I know it' , but I don't
>think you can argue that black girls made em popular.

LOL.

Who in blue fuck said anything like that?

I simply said black women love M.I.A. and that she has
a very broad reach. Lol -- you think you sniff dumbass
strawmen past me?

>Her
>continued existence (especially after the first critically
>acclaimed but nowhere near popular Arular) was all due to the
>blogosphere and Pitchfork. Paper Airplanes was the FOURTH
>single released on the album that everyone universally ignored
>for six months outside of guess who? nerds and hipsters

I already refuted this. Nerds and Hipsters get on board
with things first all the time, because they are rich
and have access to the most information and technology.

For example, Jay-Z's status as modern hip hop god was also
strongly hipster influenced. Its exactly why 50 Cent fell off
so fast; 50 Cent never pleased the Hipsters, Jay-Z and
Kanye did.

So that Hipsters were instrumental in her success is "no, duh."

In an information-driven, technology savvy industry, internet
nerds are always necessary for buzz. "The streets" don't
really do it anymore.

Plus, M.I.A. has an asian vagina, and hipsters love Asian
women. She doesn't induce the same guilt that a black woman
does, but calls white people 'cracka' just the same. White
hipsters like that masochistic stuff, they just don't want
to feel guilty about it like they do when black people say
it.

She's awesome for that reason.

>lol. She gets a cookie? I mean System of a Down was twenty
>times more subversive and direct at the time with a hit song
>called 'Bring your own Bombs' with lines like 'We all live in
>facist nation' talking about genocide, wilding out on Saturday
>Night Live.

I simply disagree. Public Enemy were suburban commandos,
who were dope and thoughtful but had zero sex appeal or
appeal to the cool kids. Most cool kids were rocking with
Big Daddy Kane.

M.I.A. is, by definition more "subversive" because she
*hides* her message. She has rich people singing songs
about robbing rich people. End of discussion.

>Being anti war post GW Bush is a no fucking
>brainer (with very little repercussions). Bitch wasn/t saying
>shit when it mattered, lol...just doing her wack ass dances
>talking about sunshowers.

Uhhh she been doing art for YEARS, nigga. She been on that
Tamil Tiger shit for YEARS...and wasn't NOTHING trendy about
the Tamil Tigers EVER. Like I said: I know MILITANT niggas
who was like "eh, can't fuck with the Tamil niggas, too
radical"

and Dixie chicks >>>>>>>>>>
>M.I.A.'s political activist. LOL@ bigging up her cred cause
>she's had some third world hardship...in that case every
>African artist is harder then her.

LOL.

Different argument. We're not talking about where she
stands relative to random African artists. Of course there
are artists who have had it harder.

>1)She's more talented then this post gives her credit for.
>She may not be the strongest singer, but she can keep a basic

No one would have a problem with her marriage if she just said she loved the dude and said next question.

The way she talks about it makes it obvious she is trying to convince her die hard fans or maybe convince herself that she hasn't sold out.

Her apex was before she met the dude and it's probably why she cashed out. I doubt she would have married dude if she knew paper planes was going to blow... she had another good 2 or 3 years of talking about the struggle before cashing out.

oh, well that makes it even funnier.

In the next few days we will hear more about MIA since she is still unknown to most Americans..

and no doubt the contradictions, marriage and authentic I don't give a fuck vs. sell out tag will be brought up...

People are already questioning why an "anti-establishment" artist was on stage with the "establishment" cheer leading for Madonna...

Everytime it usually falls for the "Hey, you're pregnant/married to the heir to a musical empire, how does that feel".

I still don't consider her anywhere close to being subversive, but at the same time her yapping doesn't come off as any more or less pretentious then the average artist talking about shit. Could be Teagan & Sara taking on rape culture and Odd Future, Wyclef's pushing his Haitian non-profit/personal retirement fund, or Bon Iver raging against the Grammys. Bono consistently makes more money then God, and lives a lifestyle that out swaggers Saudi Princes, but we let him slide when he's talking about saving endangered muskrats.

Calling her out for her politics is as wrong as bigging her up for it...it's surface.

I mean, it was a great story at the time: ex-boyfriend/popular-producer/cool guy(lol) starts tweeting/facebooking/smoke signalling how she's a political hack and her new album sounds like angry garbage and everyone follows suit because why have original stories when you can riff off twitter or what the trendy websites think

Id even argue there's some sexism involved; me thinks she would come off as 'passionate' if she was a dude as opposed to a spoiled princess.

or.... maybe, just maybe.. someone did a few back stories and actually researched the things she was talking about and found it odd that some things didn't match up.

It's no different then the Officer Ricky thing when he was exposed.

but he makes decent music.... still doesn't stop people from calling him officer ricky.

It hasn't though. Outside of jokes nobody is really calling for his head like some on the post. Nobody cares that Rawse is a fraud...even on here he gets more slack for his perceived lack of ability then his completely fraudulent/borderline irresponsible persona. I could understand if this post was done in 2010 laughing at her mismashed dime store politics when she was talking that shit, but we are two years past that.

He's gotten almost no genuine backlash

Niggas are actually mad at MIA for who she
MARRIED

Weird, again, because her *life* pedigree still
adds up and is authentic: she was a refugee, was
raised by a cat who ran with the Tamil Tigers, etc.

but who is really calling for her head? Besides the New York Times and Diplo I don't hear tons of backlash or hate for MIA. There isn't any hate in the Bad Girls video thread...

The only reason I brought up her tired rebel persona is because she gave a finger at the SB while cheer leading for Madonna after everyone was on high alert for controversy.

I could see if this argument was taking place just because she dropped a new video but that isn't the case.

If Rick Ross was on the half time show and pulled out a bag of coke for shock value he would get the same treatment if someone posted a thread talking about how important he was to hip hop.

but that it the point... she gets criticized for dumb shit because she does dumb shit!!!

If she spent more time talking about her sound and her music and less time trying to be a war hero she would get less criticism.

A 36 year old giving the finger... that's who MIA is right now.

but she never deads it with a simple "That's who I fell in love with"

I could give a shit who she married but her explanation's make it sound as though she doesn't believe what she is saying.

Talking about them being bootleggers? It's like she has to find a law breaker in the family to legitimize who she is with...

She talked about giving birth at home so she could feel the pain like the rebels. WTF? Then turns around and has it in beverly hills like any normal person married to an heir would do.

For the record Bono selling red ipods for Africa and Wyclef screaming about Haiti while misusing funds is exactly why people tune these stars out when they talk that bullshit.

I have no problem with someone supporting a cause or standing for something but be prepared for the backlash or doubt when you talk big and come up short.

I just think it's a copout because EVERYONE comes up short. Like, I am a HUGE Rage Against the Machine fan, but the irony of a multiplatinum band probably getting six figures a pop for their reunion shows 'raging against the machine' is laughable. Yeah she might have rung that bell a little too hard during that albums promo cycle but the music wasn't any different, etc. It's my beef with this post..the proof is in the pudding and musically there is nothing really that out of the ordinary on wax to make you think 'revolutionary' or 'hypocrite'. She might put her foot in her mouth in interviews but she's got a shitload of company. Her ADD interviews match her ADD pseudo-african print pants, lol.

but every story about the finger includes... "she is the wife of an heir to a billionaire..."

Now maybe this is just because being the wife of an heir is news in itself but I bet you it's also being brought up because it's has a "spoiled little rich girl" angle to it.

I just think this was desperate on her part because she was in a cheer leading outfit at the SB.

The Bad Girls video bangs.. I'll give her that.

The problem is people trying to fit every artist that receives commercial recognition within this godawful pre-existing box of conformity so they can have a better understanding of something that is foreign to them. I never have and never will view MIA as a pop artist. Her music has always been alternative. MAYA separated the bandwagon-jumpers (I mean hipster bandwagon jumpers) from dedicated fans, and left lamestreamers scratching their heads. But that album was intentionally experimental. It was a "fuck you" to the artificial embrace of the commercial music world- the chew up your single, and spit you out culture of the mainstream music industry.

There are artists who apply more intellect to their art and music, but MIA's work is always thought-provoking at least. I personally loved MAYA and loved that it turned away phony mainstream fans (but i also have a bias in favor of experimental/avant-garde music).

I think the Madonna collaboration was lame. i don't know why she would want to work with her. And that song makes my ears bleed like the Nile River. But "Bad Girls" is pure gold. I've been jamming it since New Year's Day 2010 when the Vicki Leekz mixtape was released. The video and extended single version keeps it fresh and interesting.

But I just hate people trying to observe alternative artist under the microscope of pop culture, as if artists can't exist and have a voice outside of that world.

have you actually listened/read the lyrics to sunshowers? i am not going to say i understand the whole song, but...

"Sunshowers"

...
Semi-9 and snipered him
On that wall they posted him
They cornered him
And then just murdered him

He Told them he didn't know them
He wasn't there, they didn't know him
They showed him a picture then ;
"Ain't that you with the Muslims?"

come on people how you going to front on them lyrics story telling, sparse imagery. she almost get ghostface on that ass.

He got Colgate on his teeth
And Reebok classics on his feet
At a factory he does Nike
And then he helps the family

Beat heart Beat
He's made it to the newsweek
Sweetheart Seen it
He's doing it for the Peeps... Peace

seems like here she is telling the story of a terrorist who does some type a suicide bombing type ish. he is clean cut/doesn't seem like a terrorist. he works at a nike contracted sweat shop and supports his family. then he she does the heart beat thing and he made it into newseek. his girl sees his picture his picture in newsweek/paper after he did what ever it is he did for the people.

Sunshowers that fall on my troubles
Are over you, My baby
And Some Showers I'll be aiming at you
Cause I'm watching you, My baby

it is like that song is painting a picture of the 3rd world at war. my take could be wrong, but there is something much deeper going on in her songs than what you guys are giving her credit for.

ya'll people saying she is wack are just tripping. she is kinda like steely dan in that she makes songs with "happy sounding" lyrics and music but the shit is actually deep and sad.

putting her in the same lane with minaj is just well, wrong.

reading is fundamental, there is an "almost", "she "ALMOST" get ghostface there." i din't say she was ghost's equal.

i guess ya'll don't see the imagery, politics, and story (ies) in the lyrics and as far as ya'll are concerned sunshowers is a happy go lucky song, about the sun and good times and shit.

you can return to the complex musings of kendrick lamar.

like i said i can't quite make it out cause it could also be somebody falsely accused of being a terrorist and killed. could be a couple of stories. rgardless it ain't some simplistic meaningless ish like a lot of lessonheads seem to want to make her songs.

Nobody fucking called her a "revolutionary" so just STOP.

To suggest that the new video isn't *subversive*, however,
is to be wildly naive.

It *is* subversive and its clearly making a veiled commentary
on a bunch of shit.

Just call it like it is. Nobody called it revolutionary.

that most of the people who are arguing against M.I.A being subversive, etc. is that they are pretty provincial and if the issues aren't american they don't really count.

well that's just plain ignorant.. and a very American thing.. you know a world onto yourselves and all that.

I have issues with her politics, I don't condone the Tamil Tigers by any means, I think they are the lesser of two evils in that country but they have done some truly horrific shit in the civil war and really do not deserve shout outs on such a massive stage by such a huge artist. the tamil people? yeah of course, but the tigers nope. That being said I'm happy to hear MIA mention them because I appreciate music with meaning, I'd rather hear some idiot rhyme about the KKK or something else rather than meaningless pop shit, so in that sense I appreciate MIA and the fact that she is trying to say something, I don't necessarily have to agree with what that is.

Saying that you aren't down with the Tamil Tigers is FINE;
saying that M.I.A. isn't subversive in her music is something
else altogether. She is *definitely* subversive. *Definitely*.

You don't have to like her politics but she certainly has politics
and all reference to her being "phony" and all that nonsense is
just that: nonsense.

She's as authentic in her stances as any rapper is about theirs.

She has NO credentials
Like its gaga or some shit

But she has more in common with Tupac
Than 99% of thug cats in hip hop
(FYI I AM NOT SAYING SHE IS PAC)

Say what you want but her lyrics are very much political
(at least on her last lp)

I don't give a fuck about the bird
Cause I'm a hip hop head
And if that was a big deal to me I would have probs
With a grip of artists

he was spot on when he said this....

"Diplo, aka Wesley Pentz, has explained what happened. He told WWD: "She got famous after Paper Planes. She had already thrown in the towel when that record came out. Before that she was like, 'I'm retiring. I'm going to marry this guy, fuck it.' Then Paper Planes blew up and she was like: 'Oh shit, I gotta take advantage of this. I'm actually an artist now.'"

I wouldn't call her an absentee mother. What she does with her child is her own business...

Lulz.

That quote has nothing to do with what happened.

And Diplo is talking so much because everyone knows
he's a bitter ex-lover. Really not debatable. That rich
nigga got his ex-bitch. I might be mad if i was him too.
That's really the only explanation for how much talking
he does about M.I.A.

Well, at least you didn't correct my spelling...

but this corny ass reply smells like a nig who just realized his bitch bailed on him...

What's truly hilarious is the "hipster faggots" you refer to were her biggest fans and used to stan for her and talk about how gangster guerilla she was...

but those fans from her first album grew up and realized anyone can write a good press release.

No, they do obsess over her love life, though

They also think that she has "balls" when she's a reproductively
healthy woman, who almost certainly does not have "balls."

Carry on.

Google the Hirschberg New Yorker piece on her and you'll see just how "political" and "shocking" she is

She's as calculating as Minaj, Gaga, and the rest of them

They all owe royalties to Madonna anyway, who truth be told owes her career to cats like Bowie and Millie Jackson

I don't give her points for what she did at the Super Bowl, in fact I'm surprised she didn't try to do something more "shocking," like have some kind of political statement written on her gear

On a related note, I've only heard 10 minutes of her Vicki Leekx mixtape and it EASILY eclipses anything on her last proper album Maya

>Google the Hirschberg New Yorker piece on her and you'll see
>just how "political" and "shocking" she is

That piece has been debunked as pure slander and is one
of the worst pieces of music journalism ever. Everyone
pretty much knows it at this stage, so to even reference
that bullshit is a powerful L

>She's as calculating as Minaj, Gaga, and the rest of them

No, she just made a video with women driving cars in the
arab world (while "appropriately dressed"), deliberately
pissing on Saudi Arabia for upholding the rule where women
can't drive

That is the definition of "subversive"

There's all kinds of shit in that video

>They all owe royalties to Madonna anyway, who truth be told
>owes her career to cats like Bowie and Millie Jackson

Just stop, that "X wouldn't be shit without Y" is corny.

You sound really old when you do that.

>I don't give her points for what she did at the Super Bowl, in
>fact I'm surprised she didn't try to do something more

No, she did it to bring attention to herself and her new
video, and she won.

>On a related note, I've only heard 10 minutes of her Vicki
>Leekx mixtape and it EASILY eclipses anything on her last

But you'd have to be able to read to know that.

She lied and mislead the subject in the article and cried
"unethical" when MIA tweeted her phone number (which was
hilarious and ironic).

Its not even the first time Hirshberg did that. She's
well known for inflammatory and poorly-researched articles
on celebrities. Most people write it off to jealousy. I
don't know what her problem is, but she definitely has one.

Her article on Courtney Love back in the day might have
been worse. She should have been fired and never seen the
light of day as a journalist after that.

EDIT: Hirchberg is Jewish and M.I.A's dad ran with cats
who were pro-PLO, which some suspect is the source of the
lying venom.

fans saying it's a lie isn't refuting it..... and releasing her phone number doesn't prove anything.

I wouldn't use Courtney Love as proof of anything...

I could see the Jewish angle but that's pretty lazy... the whole industry is run by Jews, I'm pretty sure she would've had much more backlash by now if that was really an issue unless Hirchberg is the only enlightened Jew in America.

Apology accepted. No need to fill my inbox with

That it was a slander piece is beyond debate at this
point. Even people who *hate* M.I.A. have admitted that.

Apology accepted...you're usually smarter than this.
