Sorry couldn't resist.

I'm surprised it got so popular, but not really because for the last few years everything on the radio has seemed even more geared towards being party music. It sounds ok when I hear a certain song remixed but it is hard to find any variety for me because I don't listen to it much and it all starts to sound the same.

Yup, agreed. That's basically my problem with it.. is the lack of variety.. Seems like the "art" of it is to produce the highest quality distortion.. some of the sounds are cool but I just don't see myself being drawn to it too much...

Because its defined so largely by one instrument (wobble bass) and very formulaic patterns, I can't see it hanging around too much longer. Although every genre has its bright spots, and I do like the tamer interpretations on it (SBTRKT, James Blake, Burial, etc..), its clearly a trend that people will move from.

What worries me is that electronic music has largely become the common denominator for everything young people are listening to. Not to be snobbish and hate, as a lot of what I like now a days is based around it, I just feel that music is the most disposable kind of music ever. No one will be playing Dubstep in 2015 and beyond.

Hip Hop and Electronic Music and Country seem to be making major moves.. I like how certain hip hop songs lend from electronic music.. I gotta feeling by B.E.P is basically a fusion of hip hop, pop, and dance music imo.. that's probably why it was such a major success.. stuff Nicki Minaj does also sounds inspired by house music to me.. I'd say hip hop fused with house is probably my favorite and interesting thing to listen to and there's not much of it yet..

But then again, no music form ever really dies...somebody will find a way to bring it back.

What I've heard of dubstep is just clusterfuckery. Too much at once.

I come from the birthplace of Techno.

Here's the problem though: to me, music NEEDS a structure - a beginning, middle and end - a hook, verse and bridge. All this formless shit with cats just stringing together 5 patterns and calling it one song, that shit's wack to me.

To each his own however.

The basic structure for a dance/trance/techno song is:

32 bar intro, 8 to 16 bar breakdown, 32 bar verse... 32 bar breakdown.. and then.. 32 bar verse.. 32 bar outro.. if you deconstruct them they all basically follow this structure.. great producers change things up every 4 bars though.. while remaining in a song structure.. my album is dropping soon so you will be able to hear lol

because the wobbles are SO pronounced and recognizable, there's not a lot of room to get lost in the groove and become unaware of the repetition like you can with a house or techno song. There's no subtlety to the (mainstream, colloquially termed Brostep) music to hide the reality that it's really a few set pieces pasted on a computer program.

I enjoy all different forms of dubstep from gore to bro to the original reggae/two step influenced sound, but other than the two-step (Burial, Kode9, Benga, et al) it's hard for me to take it in more than small doses. I do enjoy the producers' ability to find some really gnarly vocal samples, though. This right here for example, I think it goes for a really specific mode and makes the most of it: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V2RT6JCm-vU

And, again, I find the various perversions of the sound pretty interesting if only for what they say about the culture surrounding dubstep as a whole. I get the impression that what it's evolved into in the years since Americans got ahold of it is a sort of heavy metal variant, and it's always going to appeal to a specific set of people. I don't see how or why young ravers would want to look back from dubstep, it's so intense I'd imagine the raves and ecstasy rolls to be a whole different level, more primal and skeleton rattling.

But THIS kind of stuff? -> http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UexCBJF_n-4

That's a ton of views for some very, very inaccessible music. That intrigues me.

Okay player.

The two links you posted were cool. Not bad at all.

A friend of mine who explained dubstep to me showed me this cut that had 4 main synth parts in it and the song switched up way too much for me. I'll ask him what it was and come back and post it.

most of what we refer to as dubstep out of convenience isn't considered true dubstep by the people who kickstarted the genre.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jcGJihOv2Vs

That was the typical sound of the original dubstep back in 2001/2002, which stayed pretty much the same through 2006. I didn't follow closely enough to pinpoint exactly things went so focused on wobbles but I've heard that referred to as "brostep" by purists because it's more of a fraternity/mainstream style dubstep that's just meant to get and feel fucked up to.

The name dubstep used to make a lot more sense because it was pretty much two-step garage produced with the values of dub reggae.

I also feel like noting the most officially recognized subgenre is Purple Sound, which I used to be obsessed with when Joker and others were first making it happen. It's a blend of dubstep with hip-hop, funk and 16-bit MIDI sounds, very groovy shit.

Dubstep used to be an almost sacred scene... peace loving, meditative bass music... then one or two moshpit tunes got made and suddenly the whole genre only consisted of mid-range noise and robotic synths.

How did we get from this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aVpjPuzlvus

To this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mtM0a9l7FI0

The saddest thing is that people have no idea where Dubstep came from anymore... the reason the scene got so big is because it was probably the most creative thing to happen to dance music in a decade... but for the past 3 years it's probably become the *least* creative and most derivative scene out there.

i wouldnt say this but a lot of the artists that claim to be dubstep fall under this category. there is still a lot of creative and innovative stuff out there
