oddly enough I could never get my circle into them or Gang Starr. We were all about Wu, BCC, Hiero and the home town heroes Dungeon Fam. I was the only one banging The Beatnuts.

Worked at a movie theater at the time, and bumped all the way to work and back. Knew the album backwards and forwards.

In 1994, I guess I liked the following better:

Illmatic
Sun Rises in the East
maybe Hard to Earn

And that's probably all I got. I know many would rank "Ready to Die" and "Southerplayalistic" or "Resurrection" above it, but I just enjoy listening to "Street Level" more. I probably could put it at #3 and be happy.

But yes, great album. "Superbad," "Hit Me With That," "Let Off a Couple," and "Fried Chicken" were probably my favorites from that album.

I don't know if it's in the top 10, but 94 is one of those years, you could legitimately list out 50 lps and struggle to rank them.

Even though I have all of their albums, Beatnuts' joints have never got me like THAT. Compared to whatever else was out when they had an album out, there's were always lower priority for me to cop.

Yup, the beats are SO good and while they aren't exactly the best rappers, I loved the chemistry and it never got boring. Also, lots of hilarious one-liners I never forget...

I think we've talked about this before...but it's nice to see their getting the revisionist treatment around here cause it wasn't so cool when it came out.

The beats are undeniable. Never got their due and it's cool with me if younger people are still showing interest because my impression is that they've always been underappreciated. Album stands tall from front to back.

Had my first summer job during the summer of '94, and with my first check I bought a CD player from Circuit City (RIP) then headed down to The Wherehouse (RIP...DAMN!!!) In addition to The Beatnuts self titled album, I also copped Organized Konfusion's Stress: The Extinction Agenda, The Brand New Heavies Brother Sister, and (hangs head low in shame) Conscious Daughters Ear to the Street.

I bought The Beatnuts cuz off the stuff I heard on the radio, the beats were crazy. I didn't really think they were great rappers tho, although Psycho Les and Juju stepped it up lyrically on Stone Crazy (the last Beatnuts album I bought.) By Musical Massacre I stopped checking for them.

The only joints I don't rock with on The Beatnuts are Superbad (it was only aight to me) & Lick The Pussy (I know MC Eiht had come out with All For The Money that same year, and I didn't like that song either 'cuz it reminded me of when I got jacked on the bus that summer.) I think the album gets overlooked because of the competition that year (Nas, Jeru, O.C., OK, Redman, etc.) and they weren't all that great on the mic, but easily one of the best produced albums of that era.

I never listed them or their albums among my favorites for some reason.

the lack of Word...Life mentions in this post is crazy to me because that to me is without a doubt top 5 of that year.

but as far as Street Level, I just don't think its on the same level as Illmatic, Southernplaya, Ready To Die, The East Rises, Word...Life, Resurrection, Stress..., Dare Iz A Darkside, and albums like that.

Btw, Im not saying the production on those albums are anything less then great(and they fit those MC's perfectly...I can't imagine Redman on anything but that vintage Def Squad sound).

But outside Southernplaya which really pushed that live instrumentation sound and was very forward leaning for the time, I really don't see it. They really pushed inventive sampling to it's limit...fresh but not weird, very smooth and EXTREMELY well mastered but still hit you hard as a truck.
