"Ray Parker Jr. appreciation post."

I got hipped to Ray Parker Jr. and Raydio with this jam.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8In8mPfQqmM

As dope as he is, I think my favorite track that he did was this one.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lqnmiKbxi04

He did have a tendency to rehash the same song over and over again, but he still had some jams. I look forward to his Unsung episode.

You're such pests...now, what is it you want? In your depths of your ignorance, what is it you want? Well, whatever it is you want, I can't deliver because I just don't see it. - Orson Welles

and then he went and rehashed it again.

But Ray has some good stuff nonetheless.

My fave is probably "Jack & Jill" or "Two Places at the Same Time" (love the backup harmonies on those, especially on "Jack & Jill")

"Old Pro" is a great song too.

(You'll notice I prefer his midtempo stuff to his "jams")

This one leans more towards "Off the Wall" but then there's another track that is more "Grooveline"

Sometimes it's actually funny how shameless he was with it.

and find a lot of biting..of a lot of artists..

I don't think Raydio was worse at it than others....

they did have an original sound...distinctive style..and very "balanced" albums...

Lots of people bit P-funk back then...from Kizz to Earth Wind and Fire and lots in between... The P was pretty monunental.....

One of my favorite joints by Ray was "More Than One Way To Love A Woman". It feels like 1979... in a good way.

is very much an example of everything I dig about Ray Parker Jr. as producer.

He might have only written a few of the songs on that record himself, but his "sound" is all over it. In particular, on songs like "If It's Love You're After"...

the synthesizers, the vocal arrangement, and what I love, the basslines/guitar parts.

It's kind of funny, Jr. Tucker was seen as the Jamaican Michael Jackson when he was a kid; Jr. sounded a whole lot like Mike on that record.

and that Deniece Williams record really hits on one of the reasons I really like his production. They always had these great guitar build ups.

partnership that should have yielded more music, IMO. Everytime the Super Shag Brothers hooked up for a track, the result was golden.

His guitar lines really made those joints.

also, as for Ray Parker Jr. produced tracks...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nYi_4e0F8BE
Cheryl Lynn - In The Night (1981)

he kept the same instrumentation style (particularly synths) which was a dead-giveaway he was behind it on his production... it was like having Raydio do your song, LOL

Raydio was a funky funky band with some talented brothers in the band..

that album in particular though...lots of energy..and to me some of their best songs..

More than one way to love a woman
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1fUIdrFKG2I

Hott stuff
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O3NKk7lGh6U

of course you can't change that

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0AYgpqkfT14

But they had lots of jams on multiple albums.

Ray as a solo artist kind of got locked into a softer sounds....but he had his jams too.... Really the Raydio years were solid musically for him...again another band/artist of the era of "BALANCED" albums....hitting you with funky dance type of tracks....ballads ...and mid-tempo joints.... The album formula of that era really highlighted the talents and versatility of artists like this...and kept them on a certain competative edge....

If you limited me to 50 albums in that 50 would be Raydio's two middle albums... Rock On & Two Places. With those two you pretty much get it all... funk like Hot Stuff & For Those Who Like to Groove, pop like You Can't Change That & Can't Keep from Cryin, killer slow jams like Two Places at the Same Time & Going Thru School and Love... it's all there without one misfire on either album. I'd put these back to back releases up against just about any other act from that era. These two rep the Ray I became a huge fan of.

this Cat could Pull a Rick James, P Funk and any other Funkateer you wanted in one hat

then beat you with some smooth Slow cuts on the Lionel B.Richie tip the next

then bring that Carlton banks/Scott baio Jams to the uppie and Buppies

and then rewind to his session work with Dizzy Glissppee,Marvin gaye, Stevie Wonder, Barry WHite amongest others.

Ray Parker Jr had a sound and a vibe that if he were White he would be in the Rock and Roll hall of fame like yesterday.

Bro Man wrote Money cuts, wrote jams, had cross over cuts and could play any and everything and yet stayed down to earth.

session work for a whose who back in the day on R&B and Pop

plus the Brother made investments that garnered a whole of loot. he invested wisely.

now what hurt him was that he was seen like Allen E Jones meets Puffy. part of it was being a session musician and you play the hits and repeat chord progressions, etc.. and formula and he did that so much into his own records that it worked against him.

however having said all of that he did everything else that every other successful Male R&B artist who happen to cross did, its just that the folks moved on from him, but can't nobody question the Brothers Skills.

Talent Check

Songwriter and writer of Money tracks check

Producer with his own sound check

i still remember seeing Ray in a cameo up on stage in "Uptown Saturday Night" the band that was playing.

loved his guitar parts when he played with Barry White.

It's weird to think that he could have been ripped off so absolutely, but I can believe it because that song really does sound like him.

that transition from hard to smooth was a move he used a lot.

And you already been mentioned, this bassline is straight-up Raydio too.

Here's a video of him talking about it a little: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SPF6Ffv7FpI&t=2m49s

I'm trynna post the UnSung clip but I can't seem to get the direct link. But if you click here http://tvone.tv/unsung-videos#

and underneath, select the video "Ray's Hard Lesson," you'll see it.

along with Ollie E. Brown who also did some work with Raydio.

Ray is credited with co-writing the song "Frankie Lee". I'd like to hear what that sounds like but can't find a clip of it any where.

they started out playing music together as teenagers, along Nate Watts (Ray was playing flute back then, I think? and Nate was playing trumpet before they switched to guitar and bass, respectively)... And all of them eventually playing for Stevie, though not all at the same time, I don't think.

I don't know that "Frankie Lee" song either... and I know a lot of Leo Sayer lol. That Endless Flight LP that "You Make Me Feel Like Dancing" was on was one of the first albums I remember hearing (and memorizing) from beginning to end. I made my parents buy it after Leo's classic appearance on The Muppet Show!

Interesting that Ray would go work with Sayer again... maybe it was part of some deal because the teasers hint that while he didn't sue, that he ended up getting some kind of justice anyway.

i heard about it from a different interview he did. he said he was young and didn't know about the papers to sign and he gave away complete control.

Ray was so busy as well back then playing on "Cheryl Lynn's "Got to be real" sessions amongest so many and all the work he did with barry White playing and co writing, etc..

but he got hustled on that.

looking forward to the show. Ray did what other session cats did with soundalike tracks,etc.. but that whole thing with Huey Lewis backfired and suddenly despite Ray having cross over appeal he got too black all at once.

but his session work and whatnot never changed and Ray got rich by great timing with investments, etc... Ray ain't hardly hurting and he also been doing gigs with the Crusaders. some folks don't know that Ray can play Jazz, etc. and is a Badd Cat.

Bro Man been doing session work since he was 14.

would be to see more live footage of Raydio from the Houston 1978 show where they opened for Bootsy's Rubber Band.... They come out on stage with Bootsy during Bootsy's encore at the end ...all the energy they had..and the fact that it was Raydio in their prime has had me looking for their set from that show.... never found it though.

get the chances to Produce alot of the bigger acts or have his name in that mix. Maurice White is more of a Gump as would be Quincy Jones.

Greg Philliganis and Billy Preston are more Gumps than Ray Parker Jr, however lets say Ray had a very good run of the action though. Ray is slightly right behind Greg and Billy in the R&B Session Gump dudes, because those cats played with any and everybody.

He wasn't afraid to let his sense of humor shine through but some of the things he's sung I can't believe he got away with

The whole concept of a song like "Invasion" is comical

one of my favorite adlibs was something he said in "It's Our Own Affair", something like, "and if they don't like it... you know what they can do"

he was kind of like a proto-Kellz lyrically with some of the stuff

but he was old school so he would stop short of saying something really effed up

so what if some of his songs were corny, his memorable material is still top tier stuff.

he was a victim of being black-balled and also the label stopped putting loot on him, however he was hanging with whomever was happening at said time except for MJ who was in his own league.

one can tolerate the odd ball lyrical content or song or songs if the good is there and RPJ had alot of good tracks on himself and for others he beat you in more than two ways as a songwriter, Proudcer and Musician.

got a lot of footage of him just playing that guitar

though Ray didn't say it, I remember reading that he was hoping that around the time of the AFTER DARK album that he could get Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis to produce him, cause he was running out of ideas.

I kind of like that AFTER DARK album, and even the last one he recorded for many years, I LOVE YOU LIKE YOU ARE... he was doing more "Freddie Jackson"-type R&B, got off the weird crossover pop and it worked well with his voice, even though it didn't sell.

That song, "She Needs To Get Some" with Father MC is hilarious because he totally ripped off Ralph Tresvant's "Sensitivity" but flipped the lyrics into some hilarious "your girl ain't gettin broke off" stuff.

as for "Jack and Jill"... I dunno about Jack stepping out for another man; I just thought that song was about "Jack" stepping out on "Jill" cause she wasn't givin' him any play despite his best efforts to show her how much he cared

I pulled that CD out a while back... Ray & NJ beats could have been a disaster but he played it more from the smooth end and it kinda worked. As you said it didn't sell much but I don't think he embarrassed himself either (he waited until 2006 to do that) That album was closer to his Raydio days than just about every other solo album he dropped. Life is so Strange is still one of my favorite Ray tracks.

I think Ray did good on that record, derivative tracks be damned
I guess his heart wasn't really in it, by his own account, but he had some good songs on there.

"Love Is So Strange" has this weird Prince-in-the-1999 era opening but goes into some "Quiet Storm" joint that sounded like a '90s take on a Raydio mid-tempo jam. The lyrics on the title track made me laugh... he was doing the Johnny Gill but from an angle you didn't really hear in R&B too often. Listening to Ray in that mode gives me the impression that he was spitting game to music sometimes.

"And you know how I feel about you wearing makeup... the same way I think about you wearing clothes"

LMFAO!!!

...dig that they spent a lot of time talking about Raydio and its changes throughout the years before they got into his solo career

...dig that they showed Arnell Carmichael and Ollie Brown numerous times in the profile

...dig that they ran down his solo career, and some of the production and songwriting work he's done

...dig that they showed a lot of him on his guitar

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3ULc4J4b34Q

I found this before Unsung aired on Youtube. This is funny to see the girls grooving to this song of all songs, but I've a new found appreciation for this song; I previously saw it as sort of a "prelude to Ghostbusters" in retrospect, now... what he's doing on the guitar on this song is great. Especially when it's just him and that guitar.

Dare I say it, it's a wonder he didn't do more ripoffs of you-know-who in the '80s, because he could have pulled it off the way he plays guitar. He is one of the GOAT rhythm guitarists, if not the greatest.

I found this Googling the other day. I dig the one passage about Ray's early years of the L.A. lifestyle. Was cool to hear that Boz Scaggs gave him a gold record for playing on his album (I think he mentioned that in Unsung).

After Years of Behind-the-Scenes Hits, Ray Parker Jr. Scores on His Own with the Other Woman

By Salley Rayl

At 28, Ray Parker Jr. has 19 years of performing under his belt. The Detroit-born guitarist-singer-songwriter-producer has had a hand in some 500 Top 40 singles and maybe 10,000 songs, working behind and alongside stars such as Stevie Wonder, Diana Ross, the Rolling Stones, Marvin Gaye, Boz Scaggs, Aretha Franklin and Tom Jones. Parker also has spun out four gold albums and 12 hit singles with his essentially one-man studio "group," Raydio.

But as prolific as he is, until four months ago Parker had never released a single under just his name. Then came his first solo album, The Other Woman. It went Top 20 within 10 weeks. Its title track hit the Top 5 on both the pop and R&B charts.

The Other Woman is about a man coping with two lovers. Most Parker songs are thematically based on man-woman relationships because "that's what everybody wants to hear," he explains. "But I try to write something that someone else wouldn't have the nerve to say." Last year his A Woman Needs Love became a hit for Raydio. Its feminist message made Parker an instant hit with liberated females—a kind of Alan Alda with soul. "The men called me a traitor," he says. "But there were girls hanging around my studio all day. They took the song personally and every woman was thinking, 'I know he takes good care of his women.' "

Parker's own relationships so far are still centered on his longtime girlfriend from Detroit, insurance agent Debbie Peek. By mutual agreement, she maintains her own apartment, even though Parker, in another reflection of his recent success, recently purchased his second home. His Beverly Hills mansion, once owned by actress Polly Bergen, is next to one owned by Frank Sinatra. And it's a long way removed from the tough Motor City neighborhood where as a boy, Parker recalls, "I was too tall, my head was too big, and I wore big white socks. I was just not hap'nin' as a kid." He had to pay off bullies and played clarinet in the school band to avoid getting knocked around in the alternative to music, gym class. At 7, he and two others formed a combo called the Stingrays, and five years later Parker switched from clarinet to guitar. By 14, he was in a band which owned a gun to collect its fees from slow-paying club owners. At 15, he did his first Motown session work, behind Marvin Gaye, and he soon bought a new Lincoln Continental.

He finished his first year of college at the Lawrence Institute of Technology near Detroit but dropped out to join Stevie Wonder's band on the Rolling Stones' 1972 comeback tour, making $600 a week.

A year later Parker headed for L.A., which he learned to love watching TV's The Beverly Hillbillies and Leave It to Beaver. "Whenever I saw those shows," he remembers, "it looked as if everybody was in sunshine."

He eventually learned that L.A. wasn't all TV sweetness and light when a neighbor in an elevator in his posh condo complex suggested he didn't know where the service entrance was. He was soon able to rebuke her indirectly when Arista Records bought a Sunset Boulevard billboard to advertise Raydio's Rock On LP.

But then, Parker has always been nothing if not confident about his talents. "I looked at Stevie and he was playing all the instruments on his records and writing songs, and I felt that I could do it too," Parker says. He had been in Los Angeles three months when he finagled an introduction to singer-songwriter Barry White, who later recorded Parker's Always Thinkin' of You. Parker soon began picking up jobs as a studio musician, earning double scale doing session work for people ranging from Helen Reddy to Dizzy Gillespie. He became so popular, he tried turning down gigs unless performers would agree to use songs he'd written. It worked.

Chaka Khan and Rufus did his first hit, You've Got the Love, in 1974. The rewards since have been vast (Parker now grosses millions of dollars annually), but he's never completely satisfied. "Of the hundreds of gold records I've written, produced or played on, only Boz Scaggs gave me one when they were given out. Lawyers, deejays and people in the company get them, but not the musicians."

A 1977 meeting with Clive Davis of Arista netted Parker a recording contract and an upfront $100,000 check he used to bolster a bank account depleted by investments in his own studio—where he cut the first Raydio album in that same year. Parker has essentially been the group, dubbing vocal tracks and five instruments on some tunes, with studio musicians filling in. Then he got his first full solo shot this year.

"I've never been one of those star-type people," he says. "Nothing like that ever really concerned me—except getting paid." But his admitted ego has hardly submerged. His next career step, he hopes, will be films. As an actor? Writer? Director? "All of it," he says, smiling.

is the fact he didn't come out as a solo act even though he was pretty much a self contained artist. that really shows you just how different things were and how much credibility came with being part of a band.

Ray parker Jr use to say he was in awe of what Rick James was able to do and get away with, matter of fact Marvin gaye said the same exact thing about Rick James.

everybody saw Michael jackson blowing up and Prince was still a few years away, but at that time Rick James and Lionel Richie had a formula and it worked and they came in different directions.

I kind of felt like Ray was trying to meld Lionel's "rapping" style of singing with some Rick James-esque sleaze... some songs I think he was going for that "punk funk" or rather, "fearless stud" sort of thing ala Rick, others I felt he was really channelling Lionel's pulpit soul ("Let Me Go" is the closest thing to Lionel Richie I've heard from another artist).

>Ray parker Jr use to say he was in awe of what Rick James was
>able to do and get away with, matter of fact Marvin gaye said
>the same exact thing about Rick James.

because some of the joints on that first album?
shit, Ray took it further than Rick did, without cursing. (He never did on his records, to his credit... he was very old school Detroit about that)

The original video for "The Other Woman" (I've mentioned in another thread, my newfound appreciation for that song) was as bold as it gets... and then if you think about Prince, the one that got "approved" had Apollonia in it, back when she was still Patty! LOL.

Ray did walk a fine line and he was accesible and yet had a bluesman vibe with it. a fine line he walked.

good commentary Doc. Peace
