regardless of the machine & circumstances behind her, the music holds up pretty well.

On the leak site that I go to, there's like 60 comments of random heads shitting on her when they probably haven't even DLed the link yet, lol.

These same heads seem to hate James Blake, for some reason.

than the EPs were, half the time. his release strategy in general was pretty interesting to follow up on. what most people are mad about him doing is what he was trying to prepare us for the whole time.

NOT the singing, than ur lying to urself. but that's a big part of it with James Blake the minimalism of not only the lyrics, but the amount of lyrics is what gives the album so much of what it is.

i'm, still trying to see these haters. the debut was damn near universally loved.

It sounds like one person(s) produced the entire album tho, and w/ 15 tracks that gets a little boring after awhile.

it takes a muscle.

Have we really reached a point in pop culture where music listeners WANT albums to have ten different producers? I never thought that shit was good for the art of album-making. It's usually only good for making collections of singles that sound nothing like each other.

Pitchfork said there was a lot of hype around her, but then Huffington Post said there was a significant backlash.

my friends on Youtube said she has nice lips but my Hypebeast RSS updates tell me they're fake.

did she really change her name after she got tired of her old sound? that's weird, I mean do artists do that?

does she even have any songs out yet?

I think I would like an occasional song in the right context, like in the middle of a kickass movie. Tarantino could make good use of her maybe (which makes since, seeing as she's explicitly nodding to Nancy Sinatra, who turned up so memorably in "Kill Bill"). But I don't find her interesting enough to want to hear a whole album.

personally, I tend to enjoy the atmosphere of music more than the "substance" of it, or whatever, which is why I drift towards produciton in hip-hop and shoegaze/lo-fi/dystopian type pop projects. I love the full bodied stuff but it takes a lot less effort for me to fall for stuff like Blue Jeans or Video Games. Really interested to hear this for myself.

80/100 - Sputnikmusic: Born to Die is a brilliant album, but it's one that leaves room for a few improvements, and inspires confidence that they'll happen.

80/100 - The Telegraph (UK): Inevitably, 51 minutes of melodrama becomes draining. But it captures Del Rey's mystique perfectly.

80/100 - BBC Music: It's brilliantly realised, thanks to Del Rey's extraordinary delivery, her ability to slip from deep-toned haughtiness to breathless ecstasy to velvety vamping – often in the same gorgeous melody.

80/100 - Slant Magazine: One of the more cohesive pop albums in recent memory.

60/100 - Sputnikmusic: The worst thing about Born To Die is that even its great songs contain problems.

58/100 - Entertainment Weekly: All tabloid tawdriness aside, she unleashes some truly A-level songs. But
its baffling failures drop Die to a middling, maddening C+.

50/100 - Chicago Tribune: After all the hub-bub of recent weeks, one of Lee's greatest songs sums up Del Rey's grand entrance: "Is That All There Is?"

50/00 - Sputnikmusic: Born to Die is vapid, innocuous pop with politically touchy sexual politics, almost indistinguishable from and less interesting than scores of terrible-albeit-infectious female pop music.

40/100 - The Independent (UK): In song after song, she offers variants on the same theme, in infatuated erotic reveries of submission to bad-boy or sugar-daddy lovers with fast cars and lots of money.

my real question is, who or what is Sputnik and why do they get to carry so much weight? I thought at best they were like a punk-focused RateYourMusic?

I see that they're both being sold to two different lanes, but I feel like the people LDR is being sold to could get down w/ Sharon Van Etten. I also think that LDR will disappear pretty quickly and that a lot of people will be finding out about SVE in the next year.

and is way more deserving of any coverage that ldr gets. but to compare them is not really fair. ldr is sold to the OFWGKTA indie blipster crowd as being important. Sharon is genuinely talented and she's been around for awhile doing her thing as a musician through and through. i mean, i suppose their voices have casual similarities at an elementary level, but Sharon has way more grit to her.

i personally don't think anyone that is digging 'born to die' through and through could really get down with "Serpants" too easily. yeah, i dig Video Games and Blue Jeans as being catchy and atmospheric, but i listened to Born To Die the other day, and some of the songs are so trite and embarrassing.

i really dont like the comparison much at all.

to be behind the Lana Del Rey album. that's a big surprise to me considering the tone of her pre-release tracks. I was expecting a lot of the go-to retro guys like Plantlife, Mark Ronson, Salaam Remi and so on, or maybe some newcomers she'd met along the way. In particular, "Blue Jeans" and "Diet Mountain Dew" didn't bring Emile to mind when I heard them months ago.

First listen tonight; guess P4K's not a fan.

Production seems to overpower her a little.

http://pitchfork.com/reviews/albums/16223-lana-del-rey/

What happens to a dream fulfilled? More specifically, an American dream fulfilled, rags turning to riches with the snap of a manicured finger, kissing James Dean in Gatsby's swimming pool, getting played on the radio. This is a central question animating Lana Del Rey's Born to Die. Our heroine has all the love, diamonds, and Diet Mountain Dew she could ask for, yet still sings, "I wish I was dead," sounding utterly incapable of joy. To paraphrase Liz Phair, if you get everything you wish for and you're still unhappy, then you know that the problem is you.

Given the waves of hype and backlash over the last six months, it can be easy to forget that we're here, first and foremost, because of a song. "Video Games" struck a nerve not just because it was an introduction to Del Rey's captivating voice but because it seemed to suggest something as-yet-unarticulated about the way we live today. Whatever her intention, as a metaphor about disconnect and detachment from our own desires, "Video Games" felt frank, pointed, and true, and it had a chord progression and melody to match. The ultimate disappointment of Born to Die, then, is how out of touch it feels not just with the world around it, but with the simple business of human emotion.

The singer born Elizabeth "Lizzy" Grant may have made her mark with a grainy homemade video that brought to mind other grainy homemade videos in the indie sphere, but the slick sound and sentiment of "Radio", Born to Die's most straightforward statement of purpose ("Baby love me 'cause I'm playing on the radio/ How do you like me now?"), places it firmly within the realm of big-budget chart pop. Born to Die was produced by Emile Haynie, whose credits include Eminem, Lil Wayne, and Kid Cudi, and the album's impressively lush atmosphere might be the one thing that will unite its detractors and apologists.

The album's recurring themes ooze out of every note: sex, drugs, and glitter hover in the yawning atmosphere around Del Rey's breathy vocals. There are strings and trip-hop beats and bits of 1950s twang, and the melodies, assembled with assistance from hired-gun songwriters like Mike Daly (Plain White Ts, Whiskeytown) and Rick Nowels (Belinda Carlisle's "Heaven Is a Place on Earth") are built to stick. But for an album that aims for fickle radio listeners, many of its pop signifiers feel stale and ill-fitting. On "Million Dollar Man", Del Rey drawls like a highly medicated Fiona Apple, and "Diet Mountain Dew" and "Off to the Races" aim for chatty, sparkling opulence, this singer doesn't have the personality to bring it off.

The album's point of view-- if you could call it that-- feels awkward and out of date. Whether you take a line like "Money is the reason we exist/ Everybody knows that it's a fact/ Kiss kiss" with a 10-carat grain of salt is up to you, but even as a jab at the chihuahua-in-Paris-Hilton's-handbag lifestyle, it feels limp and pointless (unlike, say, Lily Allen's mock-vapid but slyly observant 2008 single "The Fear"). Still, the dollar signs in its eyes aren't an inherent strike against Born to Die: Even in the wake of an international debt crisis and the Occupy movement, it was hard not to fall for Watch the Throne. But that's because Jay and Kanye made escapist fantasy sound so fun. Del Rey's gem-encrusted dreamworld, meanwhile, relies on clichés ("God you're so handsome/ Take me to the Hamptons") rather than specific evocations. It's a fantasy world that makes you long for reality.

And speaking of fantasy: The conversation surrounding Lana Del Rey has underscored some seriously depressing truths about sexism in music. She was subjected to the kind of intense scrutiny-- about her backstory and especially her appearance-- that's generally reserved for women only. But the sexual politics of Born to Die are troubling too: You'd be hard pressed to find any song on which Del Rey reveals an interiority or figures herself as anything more complex than an ice-cream-cone-licking object of male desire (a line in "Blue Jeans", "I will love you till the end of time/ I would wait a million years," sums up about 65% of the album's lyrical content). Even when Del Rey offers something that could be read as a critique ("This is what makes us girls/ We don't stick together 'cause we put our love first"), she asks that we make no effort to change, escape, or transcend the way things are ("Don't cry about it/ Don't cry about it.") In terms of its America-sized grandeur and its fixation with the emptiness of dreams, Born to Die attempts to serve as Del Rey's own beautiful, dark, twisted fantasy, but there's no spark and nothing at stake.

The critic Ellen Willis once wrote of Bette Midler: "Blatant artifice can, in the right circumstances, be poignantly honest, and she expresses the tension between image and inner self that all of us-- but especially women-- experience." But Born to Die never allows tension or complexity into the mix, and its take on female sexuality ends up feeling thoroughly tame. For all of its coos about love and devotion, it's the album equivalent of a faked orgasm-- a collection of torch songs with no fire. Given the lengthy build-up and all the YouTube leaks, think-pieces, and controversy that followed, you can only spend so much time in Born To Die's nihilistic Never Land before Peggy Lee's famous question starts to nag: Is that all there is?

in the vein of pfork's jet review.

not amusing in the least.

i haven't heard the album, but i'm sure it has more merit than this pathetic tripe.

All of these sites need to just review the album. That's just like PFork's review of Childish Gambino's latest album. They're reviewing the artist instead of the actual album and that's always a red flag to me.

The inverse would be Rolling Stone's old act worshipping which they've have done a lot since 2000 (primarily with U2 and Bruce Springsteen).

these supposed tastemakers are desperately trying to dissociate themselves from her because of the divulging of her back story and consequent backlash.

a classic case of the build them up to tear to them down strategy in order to save face.

the over hyping of an unproven talent is a curse 9 times out of 10.

based on the singles i've heard, there is no sudden shift in sound or vapid songwriting that made Video Games a hit.

these publications were deceived and bought into the image of her kitschy videos and photoshoots and are desperately backpedaling now that everyone from internet dilettantes to nbc anchors are throwing shots.

the funny thing is... it seems as though she's already been propelled into the mainstream and these derisive reviews won't matter much in terms of sales or popularity outside of the (i hate this term) blogosphere.

it may not be cool to listen to her in indie circles anymore, but that doesn't matter at this point.

I'm surprised she's getting so much hate, it's almost like the printed media is purposely trying to take a different stance than the net, Rollingstone went in on her and I really that they would give it a good review.

Complex: What bothers you about the criticism?

not a bad read over at complex

Complex: Yeah, there’s a lot of speculation about your lips.
LDR: I can tell that’s going to be a fucking problem. I didn’t sign up to be famous, I just wanted to sing. It’s so annoying, but what am I going to do?

Complex: Are your lips real?
LDR: I haven’t had anything done at all. Anyone who’s known me will tell you that. I’m sorry, but I was living in a trailer park for a few years. I didn’t even have enough money to buy Cocoa Puffs. It’s not like I crawled from under the bridge and got surgery. I’m quite pouty. That’s just how I look when I sing.

The music isn't important.

Odd Future, then Kreayshawn and now LDR... the rise to fame through the internet is more important then the music.

WTF is going on with white women and lips? White people love some big ass fake lips.

She's like an anti-pop star. She's super depressed singing about the same things your average pop star sings about, but in the darkest more depressed way possible. She sort of reminds me of a female version of the weeknd, with the debauchery and the moody production.
Idk why but i cant stop listening to this album.

i heard the album versions of these songs first.

But I like Diet Mtn Dew on the album, the slowed down version is cool too.

But the album version of Loitlita aint good.

But over all this is probably album of the year for me. I've played this more than anyother album in 2012

I didn't really pay too much attention to the hype, but enough that I checked out a few songs. After "Video Games," "Born To Die," and "Off To The Races" growing on me and sticking my head for months and months, I had tried a couple of times to find a free d/l link and failed. I finally saw it was $6.99 on iTunes and decided to buy it.

National Anthem, Dark Paradise, and Radio have been on repeat, those 3 tracks in that order back to back are killer...I haven't really even gotten into the last couple tracks cuz I just keep playing those 6 songs over and over. I also made the Weeknd comparison while listening to it before reading this thread.

Also, I completely disagree with this angle in the P4K review: "The ultimate disappointment of Born to Die, then, is how out of touch it feels not just with the world around it, but with the simple business of human emotion."

I think the album is VERY "human"...its human in the same way The Weeknd is...engaging in the hedonistic/materialistic/capitalist things American society glorifies and making it sound incredibly dark and depressing, yet enjoyable for a cheap thrill...i dunno...i love both of em

How is this thread 100 replies and no one mentioned any of the songs I just named besides Video Games and Born To Die?

people (not here so much but in general) are more interested in getting into her as a person and a "character" because of how she was presented
so its only natural that the discussion would go that way.

it was Blue Jeans, Video Games, the one I can't remember with all the throwback sounds, and even Mountain Dew, I wanted that.

But even the songs that were on the album disappointed me slightly. I don't think it was anticipation, I've trained myself pretty well to quell that. I just wanted a better, more interesting record. This was really dull, I spent a lot of time with it when it came out to make sure I wasn't just doubting myself and now I really have no desire to go back (well, a little. Video Games is on there.)

Theres been some pretty good remixes of songs on this album... I posted the Blood Orange remix in this thread yesterday...

But I understand what you mean with the album cuts not being on par with the singles... But I think that might be because we're men... For the most part, this album is very targeted at females 16-25ish?? Sure the songs have a different sound than the typical "pop" songs, but the lyrics are still pop and I think that appeals to women a little more than to men...

I still find myself listening to much of it pretty often. Once all the hype and hysteria regarding her legitimacy as an artist has died off, and you can judge just the music, it's pretty great, original shit.

She doesn't know who she is...or where her range is at. So she's constantly going up and down pitchwise and her voice sounds like multiple personalities fighting all throughout every song. Amateur hour in effect here.
