surprised to see 6 more people vote after me.

I respect what he did etc., but I personally don't enjoy his music that much...... at all.. outside of a few tracks.

He doesn't have an album that I really like/enjoy.

So in /my/ top emcee's list he's not in the top 25.

Take Care

3 of the greatest Hip-Hop albums of all-time!

I mean, you honestly think Criminal Minded, By All Means Necessary, or even Return of the Boom Bap match up to those 3?

I do Take Care, So Far Gone, or Thank Me Later?

Lol no.

KRS-One just doesn't make good /album/ albums to me. I don't FEEL anything when I listen to his albums. But Criminal Minded was a good album. If that makes sense....?

If you're a rapper and you aren't spitting at 110%, then you have to actually make a good album- it has to be cohesive/thematic/evoke emotion/be relatable.

KRS doesn't/didn't ever give me goosebumps with his rhymes like Slick Rick/Big Daddy Kane/Rakim/Kool G Rap.

Plus he didn't make good "album" albums to me. That's not his fault tho either back then Hip-Hop albums weren't really "albums". They were just a collection of good songs.

Did KRS-One give me goosebumps?
No
Did I feel any connection to his albums?
No
Would I put him in /my/ top 10?
No

Is he important?
Yes.

Am I saying Criminal Minded sucked?
NO! It's a good LP for what it was, and it's a classic. I can appreciate it.

Do I listen to Criminal Minded more than twice a year?
No.

Can you explain why? This whole Drake hate thing is baffling to me, and what's crazy about it no one can give a good solid argument as to why they hate him.

If you just say you don't like his music cool, like I did for KRS. That's not hate; but to call someone a bitch because their taste in music is different from yours is crazy.

No wait, aren't you the guy that said you can out rap The Roots affiliates?

Lol, yeah cool. I'm a bitch, I can live with that.

but if you like Drake then you simply aren't going to get it.

the dude is SEE-THRU. plain and simple and if you can't see-thru him then that's on you.

and I don't believe I said I could out-rap the Roots guests...I said I could hang and have verses just as good and the only one I am willing to say I can't compare to is Thought.

but hey, I posted the lyrics and you and other had no comment...honestly, if the verses were terrible, I'm pretty sure this board would've been all over me with the jokes.

I have since then recorded those verses all over 1 beat made by a producer in The Lesson...when properly mixed I will surely up it.

what does being see through have to do with music?

What does being see through even mean? What do you see through?

Some facade that you seem to think he hides behind?

He's literally one of the most genuine rappers to come out in a while, ESPECIALLY to have mainstream success with it.

that doesn't even make sense.

Why would I be ashamed to admit I listened to someone.

I hate people who treat music like it's disposable.

If an album is good you can pick it up several years later and still enjoy it.

I will still being playing Drake records 5 years from now. Have you heard So Far Gone?

No wait wait wait wait. LMAO when did Come Back Season come out?

LOL @ you.

Comeback Season dropped in 2007, 5 years ago, and I'm listening to it right now. Plus Drake wasn't even at where he's at now back then, not in the same league. Lyrically he was flexing more, but it wasn't half as emotive as his output now.

But Ok man.
Trust me someday you'll sit around bored, and put in a Drake record. Then it'll all click, and you'll say damn.

I have a question though. Do you like DJ Screw/Screw tapes?

and let me start off by giving you advice, pay attention to what older people tell you in life, in all aspects of life because 9 times out of 10, you'll learn that they're right.

>that doesn't even make sense.
>
>Why would I be ashamed to admit I listened to someone.
>

because as you get older and realize how bad it actually is, you will be ashamed that you once had such bad taste.

>I hate people who treat music like it's disposable.
>

I hate people that treat my Drake comments as if I was talking about music as a whole. Where did I say music was disposable?

>If an album is good you can pick it up several years later and
>still enjoy it.
>

BUt see, it's not good. it's not good music by any means. I do understand that you are young and are simple listening to what you are given and therefore think of it as being good...but in the overall spectrum of both hip-hop and other genres, nothing Drake has made is remotely good music. Stevie Wonder is good music. "Don't make me catch a body" is not.

>I will still being playing Drake records 5 years from now.
>Have you heard So Far Gone?
>

Yea, that album sucked as well.

>No wait wait wait wait. LMAO when did Come Back Season come

Here is where I will clarify. 5 years after Drake is forgotten and not popular, you will not be listening to him. he will be another joke of a mainstream artist, nowhere to be found in the history of hip-hop. LOL @ "flexing lyrically" because Drake has NEVER done that. He is the line in the sand with me. if you think he is at all nice with his lyrics or his fake tough guy delivery & accent then you simple have no say on hip-hop. His punchlines are corny, his "hash tag" lines are some of the worst things to ever come from hip-hop, his beats are bland and lack ALL soul and swing, his hooks are him attempting to sing through autotune even after everyone has recognized that as a joke, his whining makes Eminem look like Mike Tyson...there is just nothing good about anything that guy does.

>But Ok man.
>Trust me someday you'll sit around bored, and put in a Drake

I was once told that about Bob Dylan and it was the truth. Only differences here are, Bob Dylan is a genius and I was told by a 50 year old music engineer with a degree from Berkeley.

>I have a question though. Do you like DJ Screw/Screw tapes?
>
>

No, I don't. I don't like dumb shit.

>*You didn't even address my post.

lol @ you thinking I need to address anything you say.

you have no place in hip-hop conversation because you simply don't have a context to.

No one fed me Drake, I found out about him on my own from the internet. I wasn't listening to the radio etc. music isn't force fed to me.

Stevie Wonder makes awesome music. Did I ever compare Drake to Stevie Wonder?

No lol. I don't understand your point. Do you really think anything KRS has made can stand up to anything Stevie Wonder has made? FOH. I don't even know why you brought Stevie into this convo.

I do understand that you're probably an old, grumpy backpacker. You shit on Drake while blasting Termanology and other stale/dry/bland throw back to 90's "real" Hip-Hop. But, it's alright to.. loosen up. I was like you once. If it wasn't 90's and grimy/hardcore or Common Sense. I didn't want to hear it, but once you shed that shell an entire world of music will open up to you.

Have you really listened to any screw tapes? Try Blue Over Grey.

You probably don't like much southern Hip-Hop outside of Outkast huh?

You're DJ Screw comment really shows your true colors imo. One of the key elements that makes up why I like Drake is that he's one of the few MC's left that still shows some of that influence sonically.

I think you're a certified backpacker.

It's also hilarious to me that people always mention the "don't make me catch a body" line. It's one line in one song.

Then you turn around and call him a fake tough guy?

Wtf is this the twilight zone? On one hand he's a fake tough guy. Then he's a sensitive-emo fag. Choose one and stick with it.

At least not liking him b/c he's too emo, is understandable. Calling him a fake thug is just lying to yourself, and hypocritical because about 60%* of all of our favorite MC's are just that.
(*may not be accurate)

don't come in here with that "you have no say in Hip-Hop shit".

I'm pretty sure that 90% of the shit you've heard I've heard also. And I know for a fact that there's more Hip-Hop that we agree is good that there is that we don't agree is.

You've mentioned that Bob Dylan thing before, age has nothing to do with liking Bob Dylan. Bob Dylan is just hard to get into.

Just like Aphex Twin, that dude is amazing, but when I first heard Drukqs I was like wtf is this noise. Now it's one of my favorite albums, underrated imo just because it came from AFX.

Age had nothing to do with me not getting Aphex Twin at first or Bob Dylan at first. It clicks with time, not age/wisdom.

So?

No you didn't...and if you were a little more intelligent, you wouldn't be focusing on Stevie Wonder and would understand he is an example of good music. I could've named any one there but he popped into my head.

>No lol. I don't understand your point. Do you really think
>anything KRS has made can stand up to anything Stevie Wonder
>has made? FOH. I don't even know why you brought Stevie into
>this convo.
>

Of course you don't understand...you're still stuck on Stevie Wonder who actually has nothing to do with this. And yea, KRS could be said that he is to hip-hop what Stevie was to Motown. KRS is a legend whether you like him or not and he has made timeless music.

>I do understand that you're probably an old, grumpy

See this is where you young dudes get loud and wrong. I actually am far from a "backpacker" even though I know it must've made you feel good to use that term. Speaking of term, I don't like Termanology either. Although I will say he has suprised me at times with his wordplay and delivery which is a lot more than I can say about your hero. You actually were never like me because you are like 16 years old and really don't have a clue about anything we're discussing. If you paid attention, I don't like any specific type of hip-hop. I like quality music that isn't forced or gimmick driven. I appreciate you telling me how to shed my shell too. Since you know, I probably have listened to a wider variety of everything than most people.

>Have you really listened to any screw tapes? Try Blue Over

Haven't heard that one...but as a whole, I'm not a fan of the screw tapes from what I've heard.

>You probably don't like much southern Hip-Hop outside of

Outkast
Goodie Mob
UGK
Scarface
TI
some Luda joints
Big Krit is dope
Freddie Gibbs is nice
Curren$y
Carter 2 was dope
Cunninlynguists are real dope
there are others as well

sure...I like a lot of Southern music. I actually was looking at it the other day and I like a lot more hip-hop from the South than from the West.

>You're DJ Screw comment really shows your true colors imo. One

LOL @ my true colors. as if liking Screw certifies you as a true hip-hop fan or something. if you like Drake "sonically" then you like wack shit.

That's good. I'm glad you think that. Makes me happy. I'll send you a card.

It's one line...and like you're focusing on Stevie above, you seem not understand the concept of an example. because there are plenty other lines I can quote...I am just lazy and went for the easy one. But you can't fault me for that because I'm talking to someone who is resorting to terms like "backpacker" siting artists like Termanology and claiming I must only like Outkast from the South. It's also hilarious when people mention those smart guy.

He actually is both and that is what is see-through about him. he has no real identity. he is trying to be all of those things and it ALL comes off fake. since you know, you didn't understand what I meant when I said "see-through." and my point is that if you think Drake is an honest artist then I simply have to laugh at you because you can't see-through the fake shit he is doing.

I didn't say age had something to do with it and also said when it "clicks it clicks".

And what I am telling you is that it will "click" with you when you realize Drake is not good by any means.

>So?

So, you insinuated that I was mindlessly force fed Drake. Wrong.
I was introduced Drake by my brother before he blew up.

I never discredited KRS's importance. You sir are the person who first mentioned Drake. You started this exchange. I gave KRS props.

>Speaking of term, I don't like Termanology either. Although I will >say he has suprised me at times with his wordplay and delivery which >is a lot more than I can say about your hero.

Drake isn't my hero, he's not even in my top 10 favorite rappers OF THE MOMENT.

>You actually were never like me because you are like 16 years old and >really don't have a clue about anything we're discussing. If you paid >attention, I don't like any specific type of hip-hop.

I'm older than that. Paid attention to what? you're attacks at me. You've never explained or discussed your taste in Hip-Hop you just attacked mine.

>I like quality music that isn't forced or gimmick driven. I >appreciate you telling me how to shed my shell too. Since you know, I >probably have listened to a wider variety of everything than most >people.
--------------------------------
How is Drakes music forced? Oh wait I get it; you just hate whatever's popular/on the radio. I was like /that/ to once.

What's is Drakes gimmick?

I'm pretty sure you haven't listened to a wider variety of everything that most people, or me rather.

>Haven't heard that one...but as a whole, I'm not a fan of the screw >tapes from what I've heard.

You say you listen to a wider variety of artists than most. You barely even scratch the surface of Southern Hip-Hop.

You listed the Carter 2 really? lol. There's so much more than that.
Freddie Gibbs??? -_-.....

>LOL @ my true colors. as if liking Screw certifies you as a true hip->hop fan or something. if you like Drake "sonically" then you like >wack shit.
----------------------
I think good music is good music, and regardless of genre etc. someone who loves good music can appreciate any type of good music.
The fact that there's an entire niche within Hip-Hop that you by your own admission haven't delved into shows me you haven't reached........ idk self-actualization (as far as one's journey into being a fan of music is concerned.)

>It's one line...and like you're focusing on Stevie above, you seem >not understand the concept of an example. because there are plenty >other lines I can quote...I am just lazy and went for the easy one. >But you can't fault me for that because I'm talking to someone who is >resorting to terms like "backpacker" siting artists like Termanology >and claiming I must only like Outkast from the South. It's also >hilarious when people mention those smart guy.
----------------------
Here's the good part find me more examples of Drake putting on his fake tough guy act. It baffles me that Drake get's criticized for doing in some lines, what most MC's do with their ENTIRE CAREER's. That, is acting tough.

>He actually is both and that is what is see-through about him. he has >no real identity. he is trying to be all of those things and it ALL >comes off fake. since you know, you didn't understand what I meant >when I said "see-through." and my point is that if you think Drake is >an honest artist then I simply have to laugh at you because you can't >see-through the fake shit he is doing.
------------------------
You, I'm sure, haven't explored Drakes discography. Well good sir, if you did you'd discover he has very little material about catching bodies/toe tagging/mafioso-themes in general. I actually off the top of my head can't even think of a single song that solely focuses on any of those themes.

But, because of that famously quoted "catch a body like that" line he is suddenly a fake thug.

This really speaks to the greatness of Drake. With one incredibly powerful line he has defined himself in the eyes of many, that he sang might I add. That's ill./sarcasm

How can someone who doesn't listen to an artist, define that artists identity.

>Maybe it's just me, but I tend to buy MOP's tough talk and >"representation" of being a product of their environment more than >Drake.
-------------------
Just like Nas right (my favorite rapper)? Or how about Raekwon?
Yeah Raekwon was that nigga in the streets.

>Simmer down youngin'

.

>Maybe...maybe not. But if you understood hip-hop at it's foundation >then you wouldn't respect gimmicky artists like Drake and Rick Ross.
--------------------------------------
Ugh, you're problem is you're way to idealistic about this shit, and I think it's because you're white. No racism.

You been listening to way to much KRS-One. This whole idea of Hip-Hop being this sacred institution, consisting of B-Boys/DJ's/MC is retarded in 2011. There are NO RULES TO HIP-HOP. It's about rapping to your fans/making good albums/making money. You can grab the mic and lie all you want, If you're skilled/and make a connection with me, I'll buy your album.

I like Rick Ross, I like Drake. That doesn't mean I don't understand Hip-Hop. Because I still listen to Paid in Full. I still love Krush Groves.

>And what I am telling you is that it will "click" with you when you >realize Drake is not good by any means.
---------------------------------------

You sir are not the barometer for what is and isn't good music. Hate to break it to you. If you were you'd probably know how to make good music. #ouch

So, in your eyes I'm under some kind of illusion; and I'm simply confused in thinking that Drake has any ounce of talent wtf? really?
Sit Down Man.

The Drake hate is very trivial to me. He's like the ideal artist.
To me he's the guy that bridges the gap, it's something that a serious music listener like myself and a Top-40 listeners like my sister.

And this is what I'm telling you that you don't get. if you don't understand how Drake's music is forced and a gimmick...then we just can't talk on the subject. you can keep saying that I don't like whatever is on the radio but it's just you saying it...it's simply not true. most stuff on the radio flat-out sucks, but when something comes out that I like...I say it. It's not about what gets play and what doesn't.

Again...you are too dumb to understand that "listening to" and "checking out" or "hearing" are completely different. Just because I checked something out and decided that I didn't like it doesn't mean that I only "scratched the surface." I check out everything but I don't LISTEN to everything on a regular basis.

His whole style is just cornball. and this is what I'm saying you don't understand. If you're a cornball...you probably like Drake. If you can see-thru his act, you know he's a cornball and can't mess with him. How is that hard to understand?

I'm not idealistic at all. I was just having a conversation with someone who hates Kast because of their more commercial material and telling him why it was great across the board. Quality is Quality. So you can miss me with the racism lol.

>I don't expect you to get it.
>
>Believe me when I tell you that in 5 years you will be ashamed
>you ever listened to dude.

What if you SEE-THRU it, as you say, but still enjoy it?

What if you know what REAL hip-hop is love KRS-ONE, and STILL enjoy Drake
on some level?

Does that make one blind or in the dark? Should one feel embarrassed about that?

I mean "you want it to be one way, but its the other way" - Marlow Stanfield

Are Jay-Z and/or Kanye not "See-thru" at times? Has Nas not had his moments
of transparency? I'm not even putting Drake on their level at all, but this idea that
one has to be authentic in order to make music that people like is just not the case,
and we've seen it over and over again. . In fact, what this brings up in the sad
realization that so few Hip-Hop artists were able to keep their integrity and
endure through the ever changing trends and stayed "hot." And then we saw
all of our heroes act weird, go out of character, make bad music (eg: Nas "Hate Me Now"
Common "Sweet" and countless other examples) that was SEE-THRU to try
to stay relevant but really just bit themselves in the ass. This is also why
The Roots are such a rare exception and deserve credit. Has KRS not acted
like an ass time and time again just to stay relevant? Isn't so much of Hip-Hop
just all some kind of weird performance piece and an adoption of a persona
that may or may not be who that person really is?

Yes, authenticity is a plus and for me makes the music/art more convincing and stronger.
But lets be honest about what Hip-Hop is now, its a big show. I'm not much of a Drake
fan, I never bought his albums or even listened to them, but when I hear some of his
joints on the radio I dig it and enjoy it for what it is. Does that make me blind? Am
I going to be ashamed of that in 5 years? Hell no. I'm not invested in it. Do I take
his persona seriously? Nah. But I like a lot of his songs.

And this other thing you said about older people being right 9 times out of 10, and
that younger people should listen to them. . Well I have a fundamental disagreement
with that idea. . Most of the great artistic movements certainly happened by the
young shunning the old. There's great history and tradition to learn from, but its
like the student passing the teaching idea, at some point you have to part ways
with your influences, or even the so-called wiser generation, and start anew.

p.s. KRS-ONE is most definitely in my Top 5

All of this is true...and whenever ANY artist does it...it's not good. so when Common and Jay and Nas and KRS get called out they rightfully deserve too. My point is that Drake is on that "bullshit" ALL the time and that is what people like. I'm not rocking with that. And there is a right and wrong way to do things. There is always a line. Are we going to be oblvious to the fact that Jay can make more authentic club hits than Nas? All day long on here we hear how Nas' radio attempts don't work because they come off forced right? and I agree with that...and that is the same theory I'm using when I say Drakes ENTIRE career and style comes off wack to me.

Exactly, you're not invested in it. Most of his fans are. and whenever someone says "like it for what it is" tells me that they know it sucks and they're just saying "whatever".

The student can't be the student that passes the teacher without learning from the teacher. I hope this young dude passes me in every aspect of life. I hope he has success and I think he should because he has so much knowledge to soak up. He has so much to learn from. But when younger people disregard what older heads tell them...that's when they usually fall and that's just how it is. I never said that the younger generation can't pass out the old ways and come up with great things because they do and that's how it works...but they still need to learn from somewhere.

>p.s. KRS-ONE is most definitely in my Top 5

without a doubt. and it's funny this whole conversation is stemming from someone saying Drake has better albums than KRS.

there is simply a change in the times. I have hit that point where I just can't mess with MOST of the younger music. it's not for me. and in my opinion...these artists are technically less talented in every way possible.

LP's.

Trust me when I say this. Drake isn't on that fake thug stuff. 90% of his material is him complaining about the plight of being successful/rich people problems.

All of this is true...and whenever ANY artist does it...it's not good. so when Common and Jay and Nas and KRS get called out they rightfully deserve too. My point is that Drake is on that "bullshit" ALL the time and that is what people like.
-----------------------------------

If you think Drake is on "that bullshit" ANYWHERE NEAR AS MUCH AS JAY-Z OR NAS HAVE BEEN ON IT YOU HAVEN'T HEARD A DRAKE ALBUM AND IT'S IN CAPS BECAUSE I CAN'T STRESS THIS ENOUGH. Drake like never raps about gunplay/moving bricks etc.

Don't even comment on things you know nothing about man. I could understand if you listened to So Far Gone then said, this is to R&Bish for me to like. That's a valid reason to not like him, but what's annoying is people disliking him for something he doesn't even do. Which is pretend to be thugged out, that's not part of his image at all, just look at his album covers man.

NAS AND JAY HAD ENTIRE ALBUMS ABOUT MOVING BRICKS.

Have you heard Reasonable Doubt? Jay at his best was pretending to be a drug kingpin. Nas at his best lyrically (IWW) was him pretending to be mafioso. Cmon man, they both demonstrated more bullshit on singular albums than Drake has over his entire career thus far. FOH, with that shit.

where did I say he was always on the "fake thug" shit. I said he ALWAYS comes off as gimmicky and fake to me. He is a processed piece of shit regardless of the topic he's rapping about.

Drake just complained about how "hip-hop used to be rugged" and he is one of the main reasons that the shit is soft. that is the bullshit I'm talking about.

See, here is the difference...I would never say "it's too r&bish like you are trying to pinpoint me as doing...I would say that HIS type of r&bish is terrible because he can't sing...his lyrics are elementary, and he's always coming off as a whining bitch. I don't care if my hip-hop has an R&B style to it...AS LONG AS IT'S GOOD. the entire time I've been saying the same thing to you and you just can't process it. HIS MUSIC ISN'T GOOD. at least LES said "i like it for what it is." he's not trying to pass it off as great hip-hop like you fucking idiots. I would have no problem you just said "I know it's not great or anything, but I dig it."

>NAS AND JAY HAD ENTIRE ALBUMS ABOUT MOVING BRICKS.
>

they did? Which albums? Nas made an entire album about moving bricks? must've missed that one.

>Have you heard Reasonable Doubt? Jay at his best was
>pretending to be a drug kingpin.

that album is a lot deeper than you're giving it credit for because Jay speaks on many different aspects and trials and tribulations of that life style. the album is not about
"moving bricks" and you would be ignorant to think so.

Nas at his best lyrically
>(IWW) was him pretending to be mafioso.

LOL....this is the best one and it is 100% due to the Street Dreams video and nothing more.

Cmon man, they both
>demonstrated more bullshit on singular albums than Drake has
>over his entire career thus far. FOH, with that shit.

you simply don't understand and are trying to compare their bullshit as if they are one in the same. Drake's bullshit is on a whole other level and has to due with his gimmicky bullshit.

but I can't stress enough...YOU DON'T GET IT AND YOU PROBABLY NEVER WILL.

leave it at that man.

you selling Drake to me as a great artist is like telling me Adam Sandler is a great comedic actor.

In response to Reply # 83

Jay & Nas have a lot of material about "moving bricks" because its a part of a deeper
narrative they created. Not to mention its something they both experienced/witnessed
first hand. They are story tellers. They are artists dealing with something they knew, which is
the ghetto in NY, Bed-Stuy & Queensbridge respectively, which are very close in proximity, but also distinct in the fact that they were their own worlds within a city in a certain time
and place. Late 80's and early 90's were trife times in urban America and still are, but were especially so then. And, the fact that they spawned artists that were able to create vivid imagery of what was happening there is a fucking miracle. So don't get it twisted.
Drake makes cool songs sometimes, but we know he didn't experience certain things
and ain't "catchin' a body like that" EVER. Jay & Nas, for whatever they have become,
are true products of where they're from and have held on to that same narrative all
along. That's a major difference. So this idea that you can write something off because
its about "moving bricks" and maybe in 2012 that sounds tacky or cliche, the fact of
the matter is that that meant something very real and they both touched on it vividly
many times over in a way that only great artists can.

you guys don't get it. It's alright though.

Firstly
Drake isn't telling/making up fictional stories like Nas and Jay are. You guys would know and recognize this if you listened to his music.

He literally has a few lines that are hyperbole, compared to someone like Jay-Z, who's claimed he has crime organized like the Pharoahe. (Bring It On).

Whether or not it's alright for Nas/Jay-Z to lie about their lives, no wait they're not lying they are just "story telling," cool. It doesn't really apply to Drake because he doesn't do this. I asked Anonymous to find more examples of Drake, pretending to be something he isn't. He obviously can't do this, because he doesn't listen to his music.

But what is irksome is the people saying that Drake is this or that, without anyone ground to stand on. I feel like I'm getting trolled.

He said "don't make me catch a body like that," that doesn't mean he has killed someone. It's called being braggadocious.

Nas is my favorite rapper, but come on. Do you really think Nas experienced the things he rapped about on IWW? Really? No, at best he witnessed some of that stuff from his window, but it's alright for him to rap about it?

Didn't Nas make shootouts? Which is probably his worst song ever. But, he doens't get half the flack for shootouts, and entirely bullshit song; that Drake does for one line in one song.

You contradict yourself in your post btw. Is the stuff they rap about things they experienced first hand like you said? Or just stuff they witnessed? Is it storytelling, or narrative?

It's all plea copping, the sooner you realize that all rappers lie the sooner you can start enjoying more music.

Ala Rick Ross. Nobody gives a fuck about him being a security guard.

It's just entertainment. Hence why 50 Cent, someone who was more "real" than Ricky by far; "lost" to Rick Ross. Where's 50 now? lol

Hip-Hops not about being genuine anymore. Jay HIMSELF is the one who said it's just entertainment.

Stop taking it so seriously.

Be Good. =)

Dude, the problem is new young cats like you trying to come in and say what hip-hip is and isn't.

As much as you complain about older heads doing it, you are doing the same thing.

And I really am holding back here on your 'shootouts' comments because I'm going to give you the benefit of the doubt and assume you meant 'shoot Em up'

If you did mean 'shootouts' just don't even bother responding to me ever again because your understanding of Hip-hop is just far too childish.

my whole point is that no one can say what is and isn't Hip-Hop

the mafioso/southern/west coast it's all the same shit.

MC rapping over a beat.
Boom Hip-Hop.

You're the one saying what is and isn't Hip-Hop.

Like I told you before it's not 88 anymore, the rigid "rules" of Hip-Hop are gone.

You can't say Drake isn't Hip-Hop, well you can, you can say w/e you want it just makes you look bitter though.

*You still didn't even address the hypocrisy and double standards.

>Like I told you before it's not 88 anymore, the rigid "rules"
>of Hip-Hop are gone.

Young dudes like you are coming in trying to tell us what rules do and don't apply.

That's the issue.

It's like we're at the park playing a game of ball and all of sudden, in order to make up for your lack of skill, you can now double dribble, travel, and your baskets are all worth 4 points.

With that said, I am of belief that there aren't rules BUT that doesn't mean I give passes to shit that sucks.

and there is NO double standard. One sucks...the other doesn't.

There is no "raw emotion" to Drake. That is why I am calling him fake. Everything is processed. Even when he sings, that shit is softer than R&B acts.

Everything he does lacks "edge".

It's all bullshit.

I can't explain it any other way.

He just portrays bitch in the absolute fullest sense of the meaning.

I can't rock with that in any way.

What else do you want me to say. I've explained it enough.

Lyrics…NOT GOOD

Delivery…NOT ONLY STALE AND BORING, SAME ON EVERY SONG.

Beats…BLAND, SOFT, NO VIBE, NO SWING, NOTHING…PURE TRASH

Voice…FAKE ACCENT, WHINES MORE THAN EMINEM, ANNOYING.

Singing…NOT GOOD

I mean, I don't know what you want me to say. The dude is awful in every category IN MY OPINION. and along with that opinion, it is unfathomable to me that people can actually listen to that dude.

Not only my fiance, but every other female I know says the dude is a cornball and is wack. Yet, there are mad dudes on this site that like him like he's their hero. That shit is so strange to me and reeks of gayness.

I'm just wondering how one could say the following if they had
I won't knock your generational understanding of the music
That's kind of understandable as it takes a special kind of mind
to understand exactly WHY he's so important without being there
But to say he didn't make some good cohesive albums is suspect
The Blueprint and Sex And Violence were also good albums

>Plus he didn't make good "album" albums to me. That's not his
>fault tho either back then Hip-Hop albums weren't really
>"albums". They were just a collection of good songs.

not like Chuck/Ice Cube, shit I enjoy DJ Polo/Kool G Rap more than any KRS-One record, to me they made better "albums" he made OB4CL before Rae did.

Idk, it's probably just one of those things.

I just can't sit and listen to Kris's records like that. Like he's not even in the same universe to me as Rakim to put it in perspective.

I definitely wouldn't try to convince you to like him
Because I don't like every rapper
However I can admit when an artist I don't like makes a good album
It seems that when YOU don't like an artist, you can't see when their albums are good because you don't like them
I think that's where your points become moot
Reasons like "he doesn't make good albums" really just mean "I just don't like him"
And that's cool
It's just dishonest to say anything other than that

I was declaring he doesn't make good albums, I try not to do that because it's all subjective.

Everything's good to somebody.

And yeah I've heard of edutainment

I'd like to say that whole angle that KRS took is what puts me off.

That's probably it, because my favorite KRS songs are the one's where he isn't trying to kick knowledge.

I don't listen to Hip-Hop to learn/be taught anymore I did when I was younger/naive, but nah I don't need an MC to teach me history now lol.

It didn't really have any stand out, GREAT tracks
but every track was good with may bordering on great

And I agree that Return of the Boom Bap was that shit!

It has more than a few great tracks on it
(Black Cop, Mortal Thought, Sound of da Police, Brown Skin Woman, The P Is Still Free, Higher Level)
All of these songs >>> anything on Sex and Violence imo
The only track I don't like is "I Can't Wake Up"
It still pisses me off and I find it highly corny
Other than that one track though, it's very consistent as well

no question.

In the greater picture of Hip-Hop, no lol.

I concede that KRS-One was more important.

I used to love Criminal Minded when I was like 11. Not because of KRS though lol. *I didn't know who Kris was, or what BDP was just that I liked the music.*

I actually prefered D Nice to KRS. If you asked my 11 year old self do you like BDP?

I'd be like yeah man I love that guy D Nice. Probably one of the first Hip-Hop songs I memorized.

The copy of Criminal Minded my brother left behind had D-Nice Rocks the house tacked on the end. So I ALWAYS thought D Nice Rocks the House was a part of Criminal Minded. I played criminal Minded a lot when I was little because it was my only Hip-Hop record.

But, I'll admit of all the old school/Golden Era rappers KRS-One is like the strange one.

I can not get into his music at all.

I love Slick Rick, Kool G Rap, Ra, Kool Moe Dee, those guys are in my top 10.

KRS.... nah.

The only reason I can think to explain it is maybe his voice.
Because I loved Run-DMC, and they weren't very lyrical, I guesse it's because they had energy/charisma more so to me than Kris. I LOVED the Krush-Grooves, my bro left me a copy of Run-DMC + Raising Hell also. I didn't like Raising Hell like I did Run-DMC, cuz I didn't have those Krush-Groves; they felt epic to my 11 year old self.

Slick Rick, Rakim, DMC, and a small number of others are the only ones before like 88-89 who have a full ALBUM where I enjoy it all as a whole, and even they had some filler songs that were garbage to me.

But KRS had SONGS for sure, plenty of classic tracks, just as many as the other legends in that period.

And check out his stuff that slipped from my radar.

Sure, there're duds, but I'd say 90% of his body of work endured time. I'm also pleasantly surprised by his sense of humor in some of the songs, something I wouldn't really expect from him.

I'd def rank him among the top 5.

Tyler the Creator above KRS.....man...either you are joking or this post can no longer even be taken seriously after that.

He has 5 LP's I consider great, 2 of them being classics. Freestyle, can write, top 3 all time live performer etc..etc..

Top 5 for me easily along with

1. Rakim
2. KRS
3. Biggie
4. Jay-Z
5. Nas

to me anyway...

if we're talking best MCs, I would have to say top 10 for me.

but either way you look at it, the man is a legend and deserves all the respect he gets despite getting a little annoying in his old age.

There are just some MCs like Black Thought that I feel are better than him technically but just aren't as legendary for some reasons out of their control.

KRS is up there in that legendary category with Rakim, Chuck D.

I would put those 3 ahead of guys like BDK, G Rap, and Slick Rick even.

Those guys right there are untouchable to me because of ther impact on top of their skill.

But when I actually break down MCing, I just feel some have surpassed them as far as skill is concerned.

Many people don't understand that train of thought and get up in arms but it makes perfect sense to me.

Being someone who write myself, there are just some MCs that amaze me when they rap.

Dudes like Thought, AZ, P Monch, 3000 (at his best), Em ( even though I hate his subject matter), Nas (when he really gets it going), Mos Def (when he isn't doing dumb shit), etc.

I'm not saying all of those guys I would place above KRS in the best category because I wouldn't due to the fact KRS and Rakim can stand up to them as well when talking skill, and I would really have to think about a list...but some guys are just great at rapping and I could consider better at the craft.

Greatest, there really is no contest...KRS is Top 5 if not 3.

And his live show is right up there with top 3 as well...actually only Thought can really hang.

this list is one of my most interesting (in terms of feedback) because I just do it based on album/EP scores, at least 3 with bonuses per 5 albums up to 20, and have a hand in at least 75% of the tracks whether rapping or production. always stirs up emails and conversation. KRS is the only guy of these five below that's there without any real group albums or direct producer collaborations to boost him up, though. it's all him, which the way this list is put together really makes his being #2 even more impressive. I'll be curious to see where he ends up when I start adding his 2000s discog, though, since I'm not as fond of it and even hate a couple of them. I doubt he falls very far though thanks to the bonuses he'll snatch too.

I can't lie, I always thought Rakim, Kane, Kool G. Rap and Chuck D were better rappers from that era and if you add later guys like Redman and Pharaoh Monch, I like them more as MC's as well. At the same time, he did a LOT of great songs/albums and the BDP discography between "Criminal..." and "Edutainment" is just Hip-Hop at its best to me. However, something happened with his voice/flow after that; he became much more gravelly and his flow more awkward IMO even if he could still rip it lyrically. However, there's a lack of ''fluidity'' later-maybe you can already here it on ''Edutainment'', I need to check again but I never noticed it before "Sex and Violence"...

and since most of us don't live in some hip-hoppers paradise where the greats are just hopping up on ultra-cheap-admission stages every week right down the street, i'm rightfully downgrading the overall importance of live prowess in the total equation and giving him a top 10 vote.

because while he's obviously had some serious heat on record, so have a million other cats i love.

Nas I will agree with

Jay…I will agree with as far as being greatest but I find Jay overrated as far as skill goes

Big & Pac I am not sure on. I mean, people list them just to list them at this point.

-Big had 2 albums and to be honest, Life After Death is half good. No one can be sure as to where he would be if he hadn't died, but we can be sure that his death catapulted him to everyone's top 5 with no questions asked which I just can't ride with.

-Pac put tons of work in and while he may not have been as great of a technical MC, he was a great artist and I can see giving him a top 5 slot because his work + his impact is almost unmatched.

There is NO WAY i'm giving you Slick Rick as being better than KRS. Rick is great and made one HUGE album and one great album and then he falls in line with everyone else. if you look at those 90s albums that the greats released around 93-96, Rick's isn't on the same level as Return of The Boom Bap, 4,5,6 or even The 18th Letter in my opinion. I will never deny Rick's spot on people's list as a great MC because he IS a legend…but he is not higher than KRS by any means.

Rakim…there is no question this is correct…Rakim is probably the one MC that everyone can agree on.

a host of others, especially when we start getting into the real way lists should be made in art: personal tastes and favorites

that being said, i wouldn't put everyone i listed above KRS (he's my personal alltime favorite live emcee), but i do think there's an argument to be made for any of them overall (and possibly more)

plus, to be in my top 15 pretty much means you're tied for 1st.

Well, by that definition any MC ever can be put ahead of
KRS because you might like Vanilla Ice better than KRS
because 'Ice, Ice Baby' was your song at the 9th grade dance.

We talk about lists specifically because we want to
control for our personal biases and discuss the music
with an honest attempt at structure and universal
criteria

Otherwise I can say Kreashawn is higher on my top 5 than
Eminem because she reminds me of a a girl I humped
in high school

which closes off a thousand possible pathways for expression and turns it into a sport which you can study, perfect, and eventually distill into everyone working toward the same single proper throwing motion for best results.

>We talk about lists specifically because we want to

:
we should be able to discuss these things without need for universal scorecards. We will always find universal commonalities in our discussions anyway, we don't need to manufacture a static version of them.

and if you naturally and genuinely are more pleased by listening to her than eminem, then there is obviously a chord she's striking (reminding people of a certain kind of chick) which might not be part of the official scoring system but should have been, especially since that feeling is strong enough to outshine eminem if all his skillful awesomeness isn't potent enough to outshine her simple but unique effect on certain people like you...because its all about how it makes you feel and how much you enjoy it.

When you factor in all the things that make an MC dope

lyrics
style
originality
live show
consistentcy
breath control
etc...

BT is the list

Criminal Minded
By All Means Necessary
Blueprint
Edutainment
Return Of The Boombap
Krs One
I Got Next
Prophets vs. Profits
Kristyles
Life

10 albums that range from good to great to classic
There was a slight drop in quality (especially due to production)
after I Got Next (some might even say it started with I got Next, well yes ofcourse it had that rock song & puff daddy on it),
but there aren't many rappers now, or even from his 'school' that can match it. I got LL in that list too, not top 5, but LL is definitely in my top 10...

no real order...imo of course...

Rakim
Thought
Nas
J-Live
MF Doom
Monch

...then KRS-One

only reason KRS-One fell out of my top five is cause the last 5-6 years his ish has been less than quality...I believe weak material brings an artist down, the one exception to me is Rakim, cause cat gave birth too so many brothers styles, the orginator...all that said, KRS is a BEAST...

Introduced more styles than any other MC, changed with the times, albums and not just hot singles and probably the best pure live MC ever.
