This is the 2002 AND the 2003 session The Roots did at Maida Vale for Gilles Peterson's show Worldwide. The 2002 session I have separated into tracks, the 2003 session I don't. 01. Gilles Intro/Sacrifice 02. The Next Movement 03. Panic 04. Water 05. Monster 06. Quills 07. 2003 Session (I Don't Care/The Seed 2.0/Melting Pot-Web) Wordman highlights: my favorite rendition of Sacrifice, the Bitches Brew-style intro to one of my favorite songs, the only version of "Monster" I've found, the insane percussion breakdown on Melting Pot, and I put my word on this: you cannot find an emcee who has ever spit anything as dope as BT does "Web" here.
Had this back in 2002 and somehow it got lost in the shuffle.
I love this period of the Roots. Experimental in a really hypnotic way. I remember the live show around this time was also mind blowing (not that it hasn't always been). This recording probably could have been released as an EP with fully mastered sound.
I would pay for a Louis CK style $5 independent Roots record where they just go buckwild on some fun shit in the studio like these sessions. Maybe add a little polish to some "Sandwiches" and get Thought to go off over them in a live MC kind of way.
The statement records are definitely important, but this kind of material where the Roots show off their chops can be rewarding too.
As an aside to this aside, it would be cool if the Roots caught up with Gilles Peterson before he's off BBC.
