brought to my attention by the inimitable Howard S. Ya.
That basically gives those of us who've been frequenting TLR and Mumu before it a week to look over our options and make recommendations. I feel like if we had a site combining the strengths of those two it'd be killer, but alas.
Preferred characteristics, if anyone has a contender or if any developers are combing the OKP forums looking for ideas:
Major: -it works -everyone in the room gets to program music -no max # contributors (at least not an unreasonably low # like 5) -no points/popularity system -no FB/Twitter necessary for those of us still in the 2000s
Less important: -no limit on artist/song/album plays in a row -no available library (I feel like that's a crutch, but I know some people like it)
Of contested importance: -playlist visibility (to others) -playlist flexibility -cute avatars -accurate 'time elapsed' functions so we have an idea how long the song is -ability to jump around within the same song
I know I haven't been around nearly as much (due to reasons beyond my control), but I certainly enjoyed it while I could. Imma try to stop in tomorrow or Wednesday at least.
As far as alternatives, um... I've got nothing. Not really saavy like that. I can see how tt.fm is problematic though.

seems like whatever happened in late October was really the death blow.

we could go back to Mumu, but the 5 user/room limit kinda sucks. And mumu's been very problematic when we've gone back to it while TLR was having issues. So whether it's a long term solution (or even short term) is questionable.
I googled social listening quickly, and a lot of what is going on seems to be aimed at mobile devices, which sin't what we're looking for either.
One option might be outloud.fm but man, they ask you to log in with twitter or facebook, no other options. Pfft.

However, it practically never worked for me. I managed to upload a Flsket Brinner-song (sweden FTW!) after a lot of struggle but I'm not sure anyone heard it. Anyway, I read some of the discussions when it worked for me (most notably one about kraut-rock where I REALLY wanted to contribute since it came acr4oss a bit clueless and I knew EXACTLY what to say) but it didn't work when I tried to write something.
Anyway, it se44e4med like 4y'all guys used a twitter-esque one-line format for discussion which just doe4s4n't work for me at all but I hope a new version will enable a different approach to discussion...

Like all of a sudden, it was showing no users and I lacked the ability to post. I didn't use Chrome though, it was always explorer (I tried it at work, never at home. We are not allowed to install outside programs anymore which I can understand since idiots fucked up the pr4ivilege by using the work-server for MASSIvE movie-downloads and internet radio shows 4that took up too much bandwidth); maybe that's the problem...

in my defense, i was writing at work, while working, and imcvspl specifically asked me not to play any can, neu!, or faust, even though he wanted examples of krautrock, so i was doubly limited

abe is not exactly the most reliable person. remember when he'd say the site would be up by noon, then it was in a few hours, then it was a few more days, etc.? the last day being friday may mean to him 12:00 am.

C'mon, really, I think TLR & Mumu was the only place that allowed you to sign in without having an account with bookface or twitter; but now that TLR is going and mumu sucking ass, people need to get with the times or bow out of participating.

it's eaten up a ton of productivity... not so much the music as a whole but the chat and any song with lyrics rapped in english (i know that was highly specific, but i find it hard to resist following every line when my job requires focused reading). i decided to spend less time there because i had to, but i put that aside this week because it's the last.

I started up a Google Music account and my entire library has been uploading since the Sunday before last (20 November). It's about 65% done as of this morning. This has pretty much impeded my internet connection down to dialup speed. This of course makes the Listening Room pretty much unusable.

Correct me if I'm wrong about that. But I think part of the appeal of the sites we've been using is not knowing what comes next.
And on a personal note, Spotify doesn't work at my office either. In fact, just about anything streaming craps out at the office. As soon as they moved us out of our building, it's all gone to shit.

I didn't love the interface when I popped in briefly on Friday but like all these sites each one takes some getting used to before we consider it the norm.

It was a great site, and I definitely had a fun time (even with its minor quirks).
I don't post in The Lesson much anymore, so The Listening Room (and MuMu) is the most interaction I've had with board members in a while. It was awesome getting to know people's personalities a bit more and getting a better grasp of everyone's tastes. Moreover, it served as a good outlet for me to play music I normally wouldn't share or post about.

I didn't even know you could do anything like that. I know PL was collating some data via the last.fm plugin, and he shsared our tags with us a while back... I'd love to see some of the data on most played artists & what not as well.
