It was clearly shade against the Yes!Yes! rendition, but either way, that song shouldn't be touched at all. Rape, stalker vibe and all lol,,,,,

it is pretty pointless and doesnt have the rawness/energy of the original version, but hey, if even modern prince couldnt mess it up, that is the mark of a good song lol

But to be honest, nobody is trying to hear him go back to the vault and redo his heralded early material to the tune of now (2011). Especially the top rated unreleased gems. Release as they were known by, not these updates lol.

if he was going to do it he would do it now while his star is high again and everyone thinks hes cool/a legend etc. i just dont think hes interested. especially when theres next to no money to be made doing it these days. cant see him doing newspaper tie-ins for archive material.

or Indy having a son joining him in adventures. But the original is better. He should have left well enough alone, but it's not like this version is the worst thing he's ever done. No, it's not as funky as the original, but if he never made the original song and released this as a brand new track in 2011, people would be feeling this. Despite what Prince says, remaking a song does not render the original non existent. You don't like this version? Fine, go back to the original and ignore the new version. And if you're upset because you expected a high quality, remastered version of the vault material to be released and all you're gonna have is a remake, don't worry Prince is NEVER gonna release any of that vault material IMO. So just be happy with your boots. That's what I plan on doing.

...but we all knew why he remade it cause it was 1998 and everybody was going to be playing "1999" for New Years, so it was a great way to capitalize on it but since he didn't own the rights to the original at the time he decided to just release a remake...too bad it was like listening to comedic versions of it especially with the rapping.

and prince is hardly the only one to do it. little richard, kate bush, there's others. if he was to do this more often, and to be fair, hes not done it that much, id prefer it if he did something a bit more interesting. like extra loveable as thrash metal or something.

I mean, George Duke did that a few times, and I kind of liked it when he did... he seemed to love that "Love Reborn" song of his.

I love that "Thrash Metal" idea. I mean, do something different. Prince usually does when he remakes his songs (generally when he hands them off to other folks)...

Prince actually did this to great effect w/"Irresistible Bitch"; I heard a version where he does the "Morris voice" over 1999-type production, which was actually ill because it was segued into from another song (an early "Feel U Up", which was way better than the released one IMO). But the released one sounds less dated... even by today's standards. Was pretty interesting to hear how just a year's time yielded a different sound.

even in concert (though not always, but if you compare what he used to do with his old songs, it doesnt match up)

so it shouldnt be a surprise that that doesnt work so well anymore on record either

Of course this version will pale in comparison to the original

But it's really not bad, and yes that also includes Andy's rap

It's fine

If you really need to hear the "nasty, dirty" Prince, then go back and put the original on a loop and do whatever it is you do to it

The dirty Prince isn't coming back, and why that's still so hard to fathom for some is astounding to me

Sheesh

Give me a break!

Nobody in here mumbled a word saying he should re-sing "I'm on the verge of rape". We know he's over that mess, but why rerecord it or rerecord "In A Large Room With No Light" when you could simply release it officially as a bootleg series ala Boby Dylan?

You get a handsome sum of cash, your fans get a HQ sound; win, win.

The rap bit ain't fine either, its crying for mercy. Basically, it sounds like he's bored stiff doing this. Why bother to begin with?

NEVER bring up what the fans want or need when talking to ZooTown... For he is of the firm belief that the audience does not matter at all, and in fact fuck them.

(it is AN issue - but one that i've come to terms with).

the issue is

why release a neutered version of one of his most beloved unreleased tracks?

"Why can't Prince be dirty when he redoes a dirty song of his?"

And I'm trying to figure out what exactly is "neutered" about this version

And don't say, "Start with Andy's rap"

Because that doesn't make the song "neutered"

I was expecting euro techno disco prince to show up...whew..maybe next time.
I know its coming up.
Sans andy's rap..its not bad.
She should have done the ooh sugar baby ur so fine part
I like the groove
Wonder if that's Cassandra on the synths with him
The live drums are a nice addition
This would have workd well on 20ten

If he did I'd worry about his sanity.

But that's the part I think that bugs so many people... he can do what the hell he wants and no matter what they think or say he doesn't give a shit.

They get mad and proclaim how they're done with him... that is until the next Prince song when they do it all over again.

There is a whole album of this plastic trash - it's called 20Ten.

You can find it any local bar anywhere in Europe as a free coaster with any purchase of domestic beer.

Quit giving this guy a break - this 'update' is a major downgrade from that original and Prince doesn't care or have a clue.

It's nothing personal...

Just wish that Prince made music that moved me like he used to...

Songs like 17 Days and Mountains are great and he hasn't been writing like that for a very long time...

Prince 80s catalogue is chock full of material that was intriguing and powerful in that it emoted many feelings.... the new material just doesn't hit me like I wish it would.

It's all good - I saw the show in TO last night - pretty boring but that's because I saw at the Jazz fest in Montreal where he tore the place apart.

He showed up at the afterparty with his new 'protege' - Andy Allo - and needless to say, Prince still has a great eye for sexy females.

DJ Rashida played Extraloveable 2011 and it sounded hype!

this joint does nothing but prove that The Time was way better off not having Prince involved this time around.

it's not that Prince isn't "dirty" anymore; dude is ...what, in his 50s now? we don't need to hear him playing shock music in 2011. I can put on Dirty Mind for that. this song is just... off. like it don't sound right, even if you ignore the existence of other versions of this song and go by the standard Prince has set for himself.... it's not airtight at all, this is too damn fluid to work.

the individual pieces are there, but someone forgot their T-Level when assembling the parts to make the song.

then again, this is LittleX I'm responding too, who knows about as much about music as he does sports, which is the case where 1 = 2.

it also helps to note that in certain areas of Uganda, "LittleX" is a slang term that means dipping an ice cream cone into someone's anus, catching excrement and eating it like ice cream.

I just listened. man.
this is just "off".
I'm surprised Prince released this, to be honest.
even after the Minnesota Vikings song we'd all like to forget.

I dunno. The average fan doesn't know there was an older version of this, so maybe this'll be fresh and new...

but The Time just wrote the book on how to come back out "contemporary" without losing your identity IMO. after that record, hearing something like this...

the entirety of 20ten >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> this record

even the song that sounds like Big Blue from F-Zero

we just forget them cos they never made it to proper albums. but all those downloads he offered on his website, theres a couple of albums worth. and this is pretty inessential, but id say artists are allowed to release one off songs for free/next to nothing on the web as a promotional thing for his new tour or whatever. its not like hes releasing a whole album of re-recorded outtakes. the lesson might explode if that happened lol.

i ain't a prince head and haven't heard the original.

but this is pretty bad.

he does sound tired. it's kinda like watching your favorite athlete past his prime, a half second too slow and not really that interested, just doing it for the last pay checks, think patrick ewing on the supersonics.

the vocals seem like they aren't synched to the music. i won't even start on the music. and yeah allo, uh the fake giggle the elmo care bear line, ugh.

this really isn't good, like i will be happy not to hear it again bad.
i like prince, but this ain't prince. the odd thing is with his clout he could have whoever he wants come up and work with him. they might even do it for the ticket and just the story.

this is something if a friend played for me i would nod my head and either think of some ways to give constructive crit or just clown him.

Haters. So many Haters. Prince has you Haters by the balls. No matter what he does, you HAVE to comment. You're such a fan, that you try so hard to not seem like you're a fan.

Every album, every song, the same old lame ass dudes claim they're done with him or criticize how he handles his business, yet he continues to pack arenas all around the world.
He makes millions while you post silly shit on message boards about how he's fucking up his career. This dude knows what the fuck he's doing. Your silly ass don't. He's been doing what the fuck he wants to do for 30 years and you still think YOU know more and better than him. Think about it. From 19 yrs old to now 50 plus, there has always been people telling him he's messing up. He does it his way everytime, and he's been winning ever since. At what point do YOU realize this dude knows what he's doing and your silly ass don't. 20 plus platinum and gold albums, and millions of dollars later should convince you that maybe he knows more about music and fan relationship and loyalty than you do.
You are all clearly fans because dudes come In fast to hear and listen to anything he does. Dudes become wanna be A&R, yet they have NO success in music themselves but feel like experts on what he's doing "wrong".

Since you have all the answers and feel qualified to criticize one of the goats. List your credentials. All you critics who think he's shooting himself in the foot, or is "messing up", list your platinum albums, or plug your nationwide tour so we can come check you out and critique your shit. I'm pretty sure you dudes ain't gonna be able to list a gat Damn thing. Go ahead experts.....give us your credentials. Tell us how you did it.

I'm honestly saying I like the song.

Easily. Shit is funky and contemporary at the same time.

Andy Allo surprised the shit out of me. She actually sounds nice with the rhyme.

I'm not comparing it to the original version. Why? I can listen to them both. He made them both. One doesn't neutralize the other. He composed them both, and I'll enjoy them both. Cats getting angry like he came to their crib and snatched up their shit and replaced it with this version. He know we all have the original, I'd be pissed if he re-released the same Damn song 20 yrs later.

I actually like BOTH versions. Just like he has done numerous times with other songs such as, The Dance, U're Gonna C Me, Tick Tick Bang, and Large Room With No Light.

And the "off" comments show that dudes listening way too critical. The shit is on purpose, and cats acting like he somehow "errored" with the production. Armchair producers are at the crib saying Prince errored with the synth!?!? That's comical as hell! If you can't follow it, then maybe YOU just can't follow it.

i am not a prince uberfan, never heard the original, but this song is not good. i think you are allowing your "fandom" to color what you are hearing. it is neither contemporary or funky. seriously maybe we are listening to to different songs. i clicked the complete song link.

honestly i am not putting myself through listening again. it was like when you download a song and you think you got the original and you got some lounge singer's cover.

Cool dawg, you don't like it. That's your opinion, you're entitled to it.

I do. My "fandom" has nothing to do with it. P has songs I can easily say I didn't like. I'd still be a fan, but i would just say i don't like that song. But i like this song. Easily. Shit is funky, and the melody is the same as the original which I'm familiar with and i really like.

It's the armchair A&R'ing about production techniques and business decisions that I'm trippin on. Hov said it best about cats who never did it try to tell cats who actually did it, how to do it. If you don't like the song personally, its all good. No prob. P ain't never try to please everybody. But, a lot of his fans, who like his steez and his sound, will like it, and its not because of "fandom". We're fans BECAUSE we like his songs.

It's all good playboy. One.

Dude, the arena last night was very empty - it was embarrassing empty.

He did next to no promo for this tour and it showed in the number of folks who were at the show...

I got my seats upgraded to sit with the rich uppity folks in the front...

Prince my friend, messed up and it happens from time to time.

Forget about all these feelings for and against the midget, forget about his money or his longevity, or OKP's collective lack thereof. We're allegedly here to talk music, and he stopped making music that is worth hearing a long time ago.

I think this would have been really cool if the tightened it up. but he's on some "slop funk" which is not something he's particularly known for doing (well).

I like his vocal arrangements on this shit, but a song like this sounds way too ProTools, dogg.

this ain't me being a hater either. I hear bits of what makes Prince PRINCE in this but it's just "off". It's like hearing Stevie's lyrics on "Edge of Eternity". Great melody but dammit...

I wasn't a fan of the sound when I listened to it at home...

However, it sounded pretty dope at tonight's afterparty...

I talked at the man and told him that he was bad and thanked him for the music - he nodded his head.

His girlfriend is pretty damn sexy!!

He's old though - old and out of place hanging out in a club.

Prince Launches Canadian Tour In Toronto With Electric, Three-Hour Show

Nick Patch, The Canadian Press Nov 26, 2011

TORONTO - To open the first show of his cross-Canada tour at the Air Canada Centre on Friday, Prince put his nimble band through a nearly 30-minute funk workout while he danced, gyrated and strutted across the stage with the easy grace of a performer half his age.

Finally, he stopped, bathed in green light.

"I gotta bask in Toronto's love," he said to, yes, an adoring crowd.

The break lasted only a moment before he was back at it, but he would have plenty of other opportunities to bask in the audience's warmth. Over the course of a three-hour-plus performance, the 53-year-old pop icon tirelessly took the game crowd on a journey through three decades of his inventive, idiosyncratic catalogue with a joyous, relentlessly entertaining show.

The performance kicked off in appropriately dramatic fashion. With the arena dimmed and the only illumination provided by the neon flashes of the lights lining the stage — pulsing on and off in time with the drums — each member of Prince's band emerged one after the other from beneath. Eventually, Prince poked his head out too, arms crossed over his chest, clad all in loose-fitting black with shades fixed to his face and gold jewelry dangling from his neck.

The stage was shaped in his signature glyph — that symbol Prince was formerly known as — lined with bright lights, with circular high tables set up around its perimeter, allowing a cluster of patrons the opportunity to sit and sip their beverages just a few feet from the action.

Of course, few in the audience were content to sit. From the beginning, the high-energy show inspired loose-limbed workouts in every corner of the arena, even the wilderness of the upper deck. Prince himself, meanwhile, rarely stopped moving, pulling off a flurry of moves that were both slick and seemingly spontaneous.

He elicited perhaps his biggest cheer of the night at the end of his 1986 hit "Kiss," shimmying mute in the spotlight, his hips swivelling furiously from side to side. He wandered every inch of the stage over the course of the show, showing no signs of fatigue — even during his third of six encores, he stood on a piano and hammered out a firecracker cover of Wild Cherry's "Play That Funky Music."

"This used to be my city," he said at one point, referencing the fact that he once owned a home here with his Toronto-born ex-wife. "Let's see if it still is."

Since the late 1970s, Prince has released new records with an almost workmanlike regularity — in total, he's issued more than 30 studio albums (the most recent being 2010's aptly titled "20Ten"), so he was able to order up Friday evening's setlist from a vast menu of material.

But his emphasis this night was on his best-known hits, to the audible delight of an audience that seemed most familiar with his '80s and early '90s output, shrieking at the opening notes of such well-loved tracks as "Raspberry Beret," "Take Me With U," "Cream," "I Would Die 4 U," and a mammoth take on "When Doves Cry."

Certified six times platinum, Prince's 1984 classic "Purple Rain" is his best-selling record in Canada, and a languid performance of the title track was a swaying singalong highlight, with purple confetti bursting in air as Prince launched a virtuoso guitar solo around the epic tune's mid-section.

Though the show came very highly polished, it still retained a sense of unpredictability that arena gigs sometimes lack. During a fiery take on "Cool" — from the Time's 1981 self-titled debut — more than a dozen people joined Prince on stage, surrounding him in a tangle of dancing limbs. And when one of his backup singers launched into an impromptu take on Michael Jackson's dancefloor classic "Don't Stop Till You Get Enough," Prince staggered and covered his mouth as if genuinely, happily surprised.

Prince himself offered plenty of unexpected moments too. The seven-time Grammy winner — proficient at soul, dance, rock, pop, R&B — shifted from song to song and genre to genre, at one point hopping from a cover of the Beatles' "Yesterday" to his "Nothing Compares 2 U." Later, the apocalyptic hedonism of "1999" transitioned mid-song into a gorgeously wrenching take on "Little Red Corvette."

His deft, powerful band was game for these sudden shifts, yet it was Prince's own musical prowess that wrested the spotlight. The Minneapolis native, who routinely plays every instrument on his recordings, seems to command every style and musical tool he dabbles in with a restless mastery.

On Friday, he focused on guitar heroics, tossing off several stunning solos to very different effect. On "A Million Days," culled from 2004's "Musicology," his soloing was anguished and expressive, while 1984's Technicolor wonder "Let's Go Crazy" — a sentiment the audience seemed to take as a direct order — featured downright blistering fretwork at its close.

He rarely addressed the audience between songs, preferring instead to sprinkle his shouted instructions and affirmations over the music. He was all about sustaining the relentless life pulse of the show, never allowing the energy to sag for even a moment.

"Y'all happy?" he questioned in one representative bit of banter. "I'm happy too!"

Prince was set to perform again in Toronto on Saturday before winding across Canada and wrapping his tour in Victoria on Dec. 17.

The show started really slowly - DMSR was dope but Musicology, a song that the general crowd here in the TDot didn't know, went on for what seemed like an hour.

As soon as the hits came out though, the show picked up.

Don't Stop Til You Get Enough, to the point in the show, got the biggest reception by the crowd.

The addition of A Million Days was great because the people I was with really dug that song when it came out but it just sounded terrible. Maybe it was the sound but maybe it was the performance.

The place wasn't anywhere near a sellout.

That aside, we were all waiting for him to get into the hits and while we were dancing during that introductory funk bit at the beginning of the show, it was lame and the crowd demonstrated that they were bored to.

Little Red Corvette was dope - wish he would've played more guitar on it.

I gotta tell you that the video crew were pathetic in that they were all over the place with their images. The big screens were off at certain points - it was a royal mess.

Hoping tonight is much better - there was certainly room for improvement.

Not that I was there last night, but tonight was much shorter, and the setlist was loaded with the same boring old covers he's been playing for 10 years now.

That's not to say there weren't plenty of highlights, like Hot Thing, Mountains, Cool, Cream and the new version of Little Red Corvette, but for me it peaked with the first song, something I never thought I'd get to hear live (even though he played it a couple time this past summer): Gold. Got a little misty when I hear those opening chords.

and i dont know about anyone else, but i hate the song musicology, and when i read about how long a set hes done, and how long the jams are, i start to get tired just reading about it lol (i mean, its not like the funk jams these days are tight like when he did mutiny/controversy in 1986, theyre often a bit flabby imo)

he should find some new songs to cover. it would be more interesting if he picked something unexpected, if he did a lady gaga song or something (but NOT like he did radioheads creep... cos that was pretty terrible). the problem with most of princes covers is that he picks the most obvious songs, like flashlight from parliament, everday people from sly, songs that everyone already knows really well.

actually i think he should do a covers tour. give the classics a rest now. do a tour of covers - stuff he was inspired by (but not too much sly unless its new, more obscure songs, like let me hear it from you, or underdog or something), like joni mitchell, kate bush, staple singers, things you wouldnt expect, and not do them in vegas funk mode, and mix that up with covers of good, more recent songs (but not alicia keys or beyonce, songs that might stretch his boundaries a little bit - then again, i doubt this would happen as i dont know if anyone exposes him to different stuff these days). id like to hear prince do a bjork song. or he could do dangelos untitled. ha.

I for one find it cool that he rides for the Cars ("Let's Go")....I also like the fact that he pulls out a Dylan tune and does some Earth Wind & Fire (when I saw him three years ago he did "Can't Hide Love"...shit was epic)...And doing Sylveter is about as obscure as you can get...

But I do like your idea about Prince doing a covers show...that way he could cover more ground...

Toronto Sun

Tireless Prince launches Canadian tour
By Jane Stevenson

http://www.torontosun.com/2011/11/26/tireless-prince-launches-canadian-tour

When it comes to concerts, there are tireless performers, and then there is Prince.

His Purpleless launched his Welcome 2 Canada tour on Friday night at the Air Canada Centre with the first of two shows - and it was a whopper.

Would you believe a three-hours-10-minutes-long concert, with six encores?

Let’s put it this way, the marathon display of funky, fun music and dancing wasn’t for the weakhearted.

In the first show of his first multi-city Canadian trek since 2002, Prince just couldn’t seem to stop.

Appearing from beneath his mammoth in-the-round stage in the shape of his famous symbol - all lit up in different colors as the evening progressed - the 53-year old musician took a good 35 minutes before he even strapped on his guitar.

Instead, he preferred to bust some major James Brown-like dance moves for the show’s first half-hour, briefly dipping into hits like Pop Life but definitely favouring extended jams.

“Toronto I have a question,” said Prince early in the show. “Are you feeling good?”

They roared their approval early and often.

About 14,000 fans, many dressed in purple, were able to see Prince in all his sparkly haired glory decked out in a flowing black top, pants, heels, sunglasses and a chunky necklace on large rectangular screens above him while those sitting at circular tables on the floor got a much closer look.

But he’s not totally without weakness.

You could also see the various teleprompters with song lyrics all around the stage.

Backed by a mostly female group of musicians and singers, save for his drummer and sax player Maceo Parker, Prince also covered such ‘80s hits as The Cars’ Let’s Go and Michael Jackson’s Don’t Stop Till You Get Enough, alongside his own chartoppers like Take Me With U, Raspberry Beret, and Cream.

And for a cover of The Time’s Cool, The Purple One dragged about 20 people from the crowd up on stage with him to dance while he himself jumped on his purple piano. (He would do this again during his cover of The Time’s The Bird and Jungle Love and Wild Cherry’s Play That Funky Music during the third encore).

Then things slowed down considerably as he gave one of his female backup singers the lead vocal on a cover of The Beatles’ Yesterday before taking over himself with another female backup singer on his own Nothing Compares To U, famously covered by Sinead O’ Connor.

But, it didn’t take him long to revert back to the big dance hits like Let’s Go Crazy, Delirious, 1999, an extended version of Little Red Corvette and U Got the Look, before he disappeared beneath the stage for his first costume change into a high collared gold smock top with a new diamond necklace.

He expertly wielded a guitar for his signature song, Purple Rain, which prompted the explosion of purple confetti towards the end of the tune during his solo and then a major crowd singalong.

For the first encore, Prince - in his third outfit of the night, a white tunic with ties and black and white pants - kicked things off with Kiss, and then disappeared briefly to appear back in front of his piano for the second encore featuring a medley of When Doves Cry, Sign O’ The Times, The Most Beautiful Girl In the World, Hot Thing, I Would Die For You, and If I Was Your Girlfriend.

The third encore began slowly with Sometimes It Snows in April before another communal crowd dance on stage.

Then, unbelievably, it was onto encores four, five and six.

At some point, you started to wonder if Prince would ever leave.

Before fans were allowed inside the arena, Prince did a late soundcheck and someone in building shouted out: “Love You Prince!”

He screamed back: “Not as much as I love you!”

Prince certainly showed T.O. a lot of love on Friday night. And then some.

GOAT of his era......long live Prince.....God is alive....

pretty sure i left no room for ambiguity in my opinion. even if we didn't have the original to compare it to, we know it's a remake of a track from his heyday. so ppl will compare the new version with his 80s sound regardless. dont understand how context is gona change shit. the original works cos of its time and place (in that they were the RIGHT time and place to make such a track).
