1. "Fantastic (1983)"

http://wham-enjoywhatyoudo.blogspot.com/search/label/ALBUM%20%3A%20FANTASTIC

http://www.covershut.com/covers/Wham!-Fantastic-Front-Cover-26348.jpg

Drums, Percussion : Graham Broad, Andy Duncan, Luis Jardim, Tony Moroni, Trevor Murrel.
Bass : Brad Lang, John MacKenzie.
Guitars : Robert Ahwai, Andrew Ridgeley, Paul Ridgeley.
Keyboards : Jess Bailey, Bob Carter, Anne Dudley, Tommy Eyre.
Horns : Raoul, Baps, Guy Barker, Paul Cox, Geoff Daley, Martin Drover, Colin Graham, Chris Hunter, Roddy Lorimer, Iain MacKintosh, Ian Ritchie.
Shouts : Dave Mortimer, Paul Ridgeley.

Released on July 9, 1983, Fantastic entered the album chart at #1. Wham! joined The Pretenders, Phil Collins and ABC, as the only acts, thus far in the Eighties, to have their debut LP enter the chart at the top.
In addition to the three previously-released singles Young Guns (Go For It), Wham! Rap (Enjoy What You Do) and Bad Boys, there was a George Michael solo number, the love song Nothing Looks The Same In The Light, a cover of the Miracle's hit Love Machine, and three other numbers new to the public which saw them moving away from semi-autobiographical material, to a world of holidays in the sun, exotic parties, and good times in general - as the next single, Club Tropicana.
The album features a sort of "hidden track" (played on a honky tonk piano), which is included in the final 20 seconds of Young Guns (Go For It).

However, all was not well between Wham! and Innervision. The label was funded by CBS, who therefore had the final say in how the group's promotional budget was spent : in this case n advertising on T.V and other media, whilst Andrew and George were anxious to put a group together and play to their fans. The duo's first move was to put their career in the hands of Simon Napier-Bell, who had previously managed the Yardbirds and Marc Bolan. His brief was to free the group from their contract with Innervision - a contract that was rumoured (according to an article in "The Face") to be unfavourable to the duo that they received no royalties on the sales of 12" singles - and to put them on the road.

http://i41.tinypic.com/nn9xfa.jpg

http://wham-enjoywhatyoudo.blogspot.com/search/label/ALBUM%20%3A%20MAKE%20IT%20BIG

Make It Big, the first album Wham! made for their new record label EPIC, was a critical and worldwide commercial success, hitting #1 in both the UK and the USA and spawning four singles, all topping the charts on both sides of the Atlantic.

The album was recorded in the South of France (Studio Miraval, Brignoles), mixed in Marcadet Studios (Paris) and Good Earth Studios (London) during July, August and September of 1984.

All songs were written by George Michael except If You Were There, which was originally done by The Ilsley Brothers, and Careless Whisper, which was co-written by Andrew Ridgeley. George played all the keyboards on Like A Baby and Everything She Wants, and is credited with the lead and backing vocals. Andrew is credited as playing the electric guitar.
Although Pepsi and Shirley sang on the backing vocals, they are not credited as such and only get a mention in the thanks.

After a radical revision in their leather-clad tough-boy image, George Michael and Andrew Ridgeley went to the South of France to record their second album. The result, Make It Big, more than fulfilled the considerable promise of their first record, Fantastic.
Leaving behind the groundbreaking genre experiments in rap - Wham! Rap, Young Guns (Go For It!) - and calypso - Club Tropicana, Make It Big consolidated the band’s musical strengths in one seismic eruption that divided pop music into a before and an after. Before, Wham! was among a host of genial, well-coiffed British pop acts floundering for a distinctive identity ; after, they were international icons, and George Michael was being heralded without hyperbole as the next Stevie Wonder.
No mere sexual innuendo, the title 'Make It Big' was both a statement of purpose and a methodology. Big synths, big drum machine samples, big lyrical themes, big oversize T-shirts with political slogans.
—Rob Horning, PopMatters.

Make It Big was released in the U.S.A by Columbia Records, with a different sleeve.
The album entered the Billboard 200 on November 10, 1984.
The following week, Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go topped the Hot 100 Singles Chart, and the album jumped to #25.
After Careless Whisper topped the Hot 100 on February 1985, Make It Big finally topped the Billboard 200 on March 02, 1985, for 3 weeks.
Helped by the impressive success of the following releases of Everything She Wants ( #1 in May ) and Freedom ( #3 in September ), the album stayed in the Billboard 200 for 80 weeks.
It was certified 6x platinum in the U.S.A. within weeks of the album's tenth anniversary.

http://wham-enjoywhatyoudo.blogspot.com/search/label/ALBUM%20%3A%20THE%20FINAL

A week after the Wembley Stadium final concert, a double album called The Final was in the shops in Europe. This took the place of the planned third album, and proved just as popular as that would have been.
For many, it remains the definitive Wham! purchase containing all the hits, most of them in their single and 12" mixes.
The album entered the U.K Chart at #2. That week, Madonna was number one for the second time with her third album True Blue, and stayed there for 4 more weeks, keeping off Wham! to the top spot.
The Final was certified Platinum by BPI in December 1986.

I've always thought he was a great singer and had some great tunes, even though half of Wham's catalog sucked, the other half was great but when George went solo that's when his music got even better; he always was on point with the ballads too.

In response to Reply # 0

Released October 30, 1987

Released on Epic Records (Columbia in the USA) Faith was George's first solo album. All of the songs were written and produced solely by George (with the exception of Look At Your Hands which was cowritten with David Austin) and recorded using the Synclavier 9600 Tapeless Studio at P.U.K. Studios in Denmark and Sarm West Studios in London.

The album spent one week at #1 on the UK chart and 12 weeks at #1 on the Billboard 200, spending 51 weeks. Faith made GM the first white artist to have a #1 album on the Billboard R&B album chart

To date, the album has sold over 25 million copies worldwide and was certified diamond in the US

Never been able to tolerate the first Wham! album but everything else is gold. I've always thought George was one of the most underrated pop song writers. I mean "Older" is just some friggin' real talk.

I have to keep thinking what would have happened if he dropped "Listen Without Prejudice II", the "Trojan Souls" project AND never went to war with his label. MAN.

He really never lost a step between "Volume 1" , "Red Hot & Dance" and "Older" but I think if he didn't go silent for that extended period I think he'd be at the very least considered a legacy act instead a" one hit wonder" or an 80s act. Which is crazy because he has a gang of hits.

Also, good looks on the live stuff! I would have even have thought it was a possibility.

He only did ONE show here in Northern Cali and it was in San Jose. I would've expected him to perform in San Francisco or even Oakland but San Jose? smh

He also should've done a bit more US promotion for the album and tour. It could've easily reached the top 10 if he had

"Older" is the type of record that shows that you can actually make a mature record without it being boring. And you can make uptempo tracks without chasing after da club. It the kind of record that just makes sense as far as artistic progression.

from Wikipedia

The album sold approximately eight million copies, a disappointing number compared to the 25 million copies of Faith. Sales were particularly poor in the United States, where Faith had been the best-selling album of 1988. At two million copies sold, Listen Without Prejudice was a commercial disappointment for such a successful artist. The album entered the Billboard 200 at number 22 and finally reached number two, blocked from the top by MC Hammer's Please Hammer Don't Hurt 'Em. The album spent the rest of 1990 in the top ten, with a total of 42 weeks in the entire chart—fewer than half the 87 weeks spent by Faith.
In the UK, the album was a huge success, eclipsing sales of Faith. Listen Without Prejudice debuted there at number one, where it remained for a week. It was at number two for the following two weeks. It spent 34 consecutive weeks in the Top 20, and jumped from number 13 to number three in its 24th week. It spent a total of 88 weeks in the UK Albums Chart, and was certified platinum four times by the BPI on 2 January 1992.
The album produced five U.K. hit singles, all of which were released in quick succession, within an eight month period. These were "Praying for Time" (which reached number one on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart—his final number one hit as a solo artist), "Waiting for That Day," "Cowboys and Angels," "Freedom," and "Heal the Pain."
The album won the Best British Album award at the 1991 BRIT Awards.

After the massive success of Michael's 1987 Faith album, the expectations for his follow-up album were also high. In September 1990, Listen Without Prejudice Vol. 1 was released to mixed reviews (with the more dance-oriented Vol. 2 ostensibly scheduled to follow in June 1991). The album was a stark departure from the previous LP, with largely acoustic instrumentation and a sombre intensity in many of the lyrics and melodies.
George Michael wanted to be taken more seriously as a songwriter, which resulted in a more thoughtful, often moody recording. The album peaked at number two on the U.S. 'Billboard Top 200 Albums chart. The first single released from the album was Praying for Time, which reached No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100. The second single "Freedom '90" reached No. 8 in the U.S., and in early Spring 1991, "Waiting for That Day" peaked at No. 27 in the U.S. "Mother's Pride" achieved Top 40 success outside the U.S., but received considerable airplay in the States during the Gulf War, despite its not being released as a single.
Even though the album sold 8 million copies worldwide, it was viewed as a commercial disappointment in the U.S., with barely 1 million in sales, compared to the multi-platinum success of Faith in the U.S. alone.
The album is largely devoted to ballads and folk-styled rock songs, although there are a few dance tracks like "Freedom" and "Soul Free." There was also a remix of "Freedom" that incorporated elements of Soul II Soul's "Back to Life," which was released as a twelve-inch single and received a good deal of club play. Like Faith, each track was produced and arranged by Michael himself.
Michael refused to appear in many of the singles' videos for this album. Accordingly, the video for "Praying for Time" consists of the lyrics projected onto a dark background, while the video for "Freedom" featured several supermodels lip-syncing its lyrics. Directed by David Fincher, who directed Madonna's "Vogue" video, it featured the destruction by fire and explosions several icons from Michael's recent Faith period.
The follow-up album Listen Without Prejudice Vol. 2 was scrapped for reasons known only to Michael and his record company, possibly because of Michael's legal battle with Sony Music Entertainment. Three of the tracks intended for that album appear on the AIDS-benefit album Red Hot + Dance, while a fourth ("Crazyman Dance") turned up on the B-side of that album's first single "Too Funky."

wiki entry:
Older found Michael experimenting with new musical styles and expanding his artistic horizons. Particularly notable was the jazz flavour of the albums sound. The album marked a departure to the synthesised production of his previous projects, delivering a more organic sound with the inclusion of brass and strings. Michael was particularly inspired by the music of Antonio Carlos Jobim, who died in 1994, and to whom the album was dedicated. Another big influence was the album's producer, Johnny Douglas, who has mixed several George Michael songs as B-sides. They first met when Douglas produced Lisa Moorish's version of "I'm Your Man" in 1995, to which Michael added backing vocals. They both began to work together soon after, and they co-wrote "Spinning the Wheel" together and also co-wrote and produced "Fastlove". Douglas also played keyboards on those tracks.

Overall, the style of the album was melancholy, dark and sad. George Michael complemented this departure making a dramatic change of his clothes, hair style and overall appearance. The long hair, beard and jeans that represented him to the common knowledge during the late eighties, were replaced with a buzz cut and mostly leather clothes. Michael commented, on the The Oprah Winfrey Show about that new appearance:

"The way my image changed in Europe was that I looked very different, I had very short hair—I had really a kind of gay look in a way. I think I was trying to tell people I was okay with it, I just really didn't want to share it with journalists. The album I made in the middle nineties called Older was a tribute to Anselmo, really; there was a dedication to him on the album and fairly obvious male references. To my fans and the people that were really listening, I felt like I was trying to come out with them."
Michael grew back a longer hair style during 1998, as was first shown on the video he recorded for "Outside", premiered near the end of that year.

Older was a huge commercial success, specially in the European markets. In the UK the album was largely anticipated, and debuted at No.1 with an impressive 281,000 copies, becoming one of the biggest debuts ever in British history (it currently ranks as the 23rd fastest-selling album in the UK). It is also Virgin's fastest-selling album of all time. It became Michael's biggest-selling album in his homeland, achieving over 1.8 million copies sold, and receiving a 6xPlatinum certification by the BPI on 5 December 1997. In the UK, it spent a total of 147 weeks inside the Top 200, 99 of them on the Top 75, and 35 of them on the Top 10 (including 23 consecutive weeks). The steady sales of the album were the result of good promotion market and the release of six hit singles throughout a 2-year period. All of these singles (except for the one for the title track) were released and promoted as EP's, in two available formats, most of them containing previously unreleased material (including live tracks, alternate versions and, in the case for the "Spinning the Wheel E.P", two new studio recordings of brand-new George Michael compositions). Most of these singles were promoted with live performances at Top of the Pops and also music videos were recorded for the four first singles. All of this helped to push the album sales from one week to another, with the album usually returning to the Top 10 in the British charts. For example, when "Star People '97" was released in mid-1997, Older achieved a 21-14-10-7 progression on the charts. Very much the same happened when "You Have Been Loved" was issued as the sixth single (fourteen months after the original release of the album), and Older showed a 24-14-7 move on the UK charts. In all, Older currently sits as the 97th best selling album of all time in the United Kingdom.
In the United States, the album was received with lukewarm success. There (and in Canada), the album release was particularly notable as it was the first album released by the now-defunct DreamWorks Records. It was preceded nicely, with "Jesus to a Child" and "Fastlove" reaching the Top 10 of the Billboard Hot 100, but debut sales for the album were very disappointing – the album only reached No.6 in the Billboard 200, it slipped down the charts very quickly, and in all it just sold over one million copies.

I've been consistently referencing this record because as much I love the other records, this one just floored me when I heard it. (To give you an idea I have it on cassette). I think you'd hard pressed to find more honest moments than on this album and yet he still knew how to lighten it up. I'm still slightly bitter that Dreamworks dropped the ball but the whole label never really worked so no real fault to them.

Yeah, I was working at a record store when the record came out and it was *crickets* I think Dreamworks thought that The George Michael name was going to do all the heavy lifting and they could ride in the wake. Well, that didn't quite work out. And really with all of the heavy-hitting behind that label it's almost embarassing. But they dropped the ball all over.

And if he could have toured behind that record, like a theatre tour...forget about it. I'd be curious how the greatest hits record that came out on the heels of "Older" sold. Because I think I remember "Outside" getting a good amount of burn.

He hadn't been on the US charts since 1991 so a lot of the American public wrote him off. I'm a bit surprised that it was such a huge success in the UK, considering how Britpop groups like Oasis, Pulp, and others seemed to have been the big acts along with boy bands like Take That but then again, the UK scene seems to appreciate music a bit more at times lol

But it does make sense in that it was the time of Take That so he kind of fit in that tradition. And plus the whole, "Oh I listened to here when I was younger! Now he fits into my new grown-up kind of world."

Released December 13, 1999
UK #2
US #157

"Brother, Can You Spare a Dime?" – 4:22
"Roxanne" – 4:11
"You've Changed" – 4:25
"My Baby Just Cares for Me" – 1:45
"The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face" – 5:19
"Miss Sarajevo" – 5:11
"I Remember You" – 4:12
"Secret Love" – 2:39
"Wild Is the Wind" – 4:02
"Where or When" / "It's Alright with Me" (Instrumental) (Hidden track) – 7:00

wiki:
This album is the only in George Michael's entire solo catalogue to have not yet reached number one in the UK Albums Chart, peaking at number two instead. It was kept off of the top spot by Shania Twain's Come on Over.
The cover album had a hit in The Police's "Roxanne", for which George released a music video, shot in Amsterdam, in the so-called Red District, using ordinary people, not actors, who really live their lives on the street.
Another version exists of the record opener, "Brother, Can You Spare a Dime?", sung by George with popular Italian tenor Luciano Pavarotti at one of his famous "Pavarotti and Friends" live shows, and then included on the limited edition of Twenty Five.

64. "Info on the unreleased "Trojan Souls" project"
In response to Reply # 0

from iOffer:
In 1993 George and cousin Andros had an amazing idea; to
create an album written and produced by George Michael, with other
major artists (i.e. Stevie Wonder, Seal, Janet Jackson) to record
the songs.

This project was called ’The Trojan Souls’, and
in 1993 Warner Brother gave George and Andros a Million Dollars to
produce it. George spent countless hours in the studio writing and
recording the tracks. The resulting work would have become an
George Michael classic.

Unfortunately due to devastating personal events, George was
unable to continue working and the project was shelved. While the
instrumental tracks to each song had been completed, the vocals
were left in various states. A couple were 100% complete, some had
choruses, and others were left in instrumental form.

The highlight of The Trojan Souls is ’This Kind of
Love’, a ballad that was written as a duet with Elton John.
The version on this disc features George singing all the vocals
(Elton’s attempts can be found on the Remix/Outtakes/Demos
CD). The range an intensity of his performance is absolutely
moving!

Dia-hard fans might recognize ’Ain’t No
Stoppin’ Us now’, which was to be released as the first
single from the album.

and from a dotmusic article:
The long, long-delayed George Michael album "Trojan Souls" is still alive, according to a report in England's "Dot Music." The record, which a source close to Michael says features collaborations with 10 vocalists including Aretha Franklin, Elton John, Stevie Wonder and Anita Baker, was halted over Michael's legal problems with his former label, Sony.

The R&B-oriented record was conceived in 1991 as a Michael project that saw the singer write and produce tracks for the guest artists, but apparently it evolved to include duets. It was originally planned as part of a production deal between Sony and Hardback, the label at the time run by Michael's cousin Andreos Georgiou, but Sony rejected the deal and the project was given to Warner.

The record was initially scheduled to be released in 1993. Work was halted in 1992 when Michael and Sony began their legal battle (launched over creative and financial issues) which also apparently affected the Hardback contract. At that time the record was said to be 50 percent complete. Georgiou, told "Dot" that it was still only 50 percent complete and that it would be out "early in the new millenium." Georgiou also told the news service that the Hardback label is also being resurrected.
