Its not like this kid doesn't have potential but this stuff feels forced. i don't know what it is, maybe its the south new york thing. Whole thing is just kinda corny and forced. And not really hitting like that. Theres a few ok tracks tho. But overall..theres a hipster vibe here thats just not dope

am i hatin???

I don't think you're hatin but I think not being down with a NY artist making more or less "Southern" music is definitely going to inhibit your enjoyment of it.

here. Kind of like OF and other new hip-hop acts, the hipster side of this shit is pretty obvious. I don't think that's necessarily a bad thing or takes away credibility. These young kids grew up in the internet era so of course what their exposed to is going to expand greatly.

If you prefer your hip-hop to be more, I don't know, I guess isolated. Like if you want your NY to be about NY Streets and sound like it was influenced by NY Producers and Rappers....then you're not going to like it.

Personally, I think this "hipster" bullshit is really pushing rap forward. Now you got producers that know about a lot more than hip-hop and their incorporating in their beats and making some dope shit.

Then again, I'm mostly talking production/overall sound here, if how ASAP Rocky raps doesn't appeal to you, then none of this matters lol.

It's alot of fun. You kinda know what you're getting but it's enjoyable. The production/beat choice immaculate. ASAP isn't an amazing MC but he manages to synthesize all his different influences into something VERY listenable.

Clams Casino is about to be a very big problem. I'd love to hear him do some shit with Curren$y.

Game and Rick Ross have been lauded for years for their "beat selection." and nas has been ridiculed for selecting bad beats. I think its one of the weakest ways to judge a rapper, but a lot of people do it and i guess there is some logic to it. but id rather give props to the beat maker, not the rapper for picking the beat.

about New Yorkers and Texans fighting to hold onto what they believe is rightfully theirs via Twitter/message boards

my stance is though, make good music

haven't heard this album yet, but Peso and Purple Swag are ridiculously good songs

I don't really care what city birthed them

Jadakiss is five hundred times the rapper ASAP is and every time he jocks a southern style on his albums it sounds like shit so

I say Rocky is doing right. oh well

Clams Casino sound is rather unique more like Wiz/Curre$y vibe than Screw..

I'm not really trippin about it, and I doubt a lot of Southern cats gonna really trip on it either..

He embraces a lot of regions too.. West Coast is repped as well..

45. "Earlier NY rappers"
In response to Reply # 37

who tried to rap over southern beats really fucking sucked on them. Jadakiss is definitely a prime example.

I think it's the often overlooked being able to ride a beat. This where NYer's can get mad lol. Super lyrical east coast rap doesn't really require much rhythm. They don't really ride over beats the way southern rappers do. They used to, like 80's and older NY rap did. But post illmatic, everybody just wanted to straight spit through songs and didn't care whether or not it really fell on the beat. Plus the production they used didn't really leave room for riding the beat anyway, it was like slow songs built to basically talk-rap over.

Southern beats, to do right, really do require rhythm. It's akin to dancing in a way (another reason rap nerds won't get it, they hate dancing lol), you have to time your shit correctly and flow just right to have that sound. You can't just straight spit through songs and achieve that.

Gucci Mane is better than nearly everyone at this, Lil' Wayne can do it, Rick Ross is presently doing it to everything he touches. East coast rappers weren't doing it.

This new breed gets it though and knows how to rap over those beats. Meek Mill and ASAP Rocky, if anything, show that East Coast heads should actually be proud of what these cats are doing. They bring more complicated East Coast rhymes to that smooth beat riding style.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bgAsTLmdDk0

Specifically listen to 36 seconds in...that shit sounds perfect and is exactly how you should handle a beat like this. Smooth and shit. Other NY Rappers would've wasted this beat trying to rap through it with no sense of rhythm.

Meek Mill does the same thing as far as rapping over southern ass beats but he doesn't do what seems to irk you most about ASAP Rocky....talk about topics usually related to regions he's not from.

He might rap over southern ass, lex luger (and similar) beats, but he generally talks about Philly and that life.

i would argue that east coast rappers who thrived in the post boom-bap era have all been artists who were comfortable over diverse tempos. jay-z, fabolous, 50, camron, busta, minaj, etc. guys like nas or mobb deep who had more static deliveries struggled.

tonight and then seeing they got a version with Spaceghostpurrp now. Well it's done deal, I'm downloading.

Besides, I'm not from NY and I don't listen to TX rap enough to care whether or not he's channeling it. Same reason I don't care Spaceghostpurrp is busy being raised in Miami and making music like he's in Memphis Tennessee in the early 90's.

If they do it well and it's interesting music (What I've heard of ASAP is), then I'm all for it.

i'll keep bumping it and I'm rooting for the kid but lets not act what he's doing isn't lame and corny.

I know some NYers and more specifically Harlem kats are gonna ride for this guy cause you want him to blow up and Harlem can have another star. Trust me I get that. But what he's doing (even tho its done very well) is fucking corny. If this guy was from Philly all the NYers would be calling him on his shit. If he was from any city other than NY y'all would be saying the same shit. Stop pretending like you don't think its corny he jocking Houston so hard. (Again it sounds really good but thats besides the point). The same kats who complain about Drake doing Houston/southern joints. But guess what at least he had some kind of roots in Memphis lol

He should've had Bun, KRIT or Gibbs on this btw.

will it do for "cloud rap" what 'Flockaveli' did for lex luger-ish (for lack of a better term) beats? is this a legitimization of the sound that has been bubbling in the underground for a few years now? will we soon hear rick ross rapping over "light", quixotic, what-would-have-been-considered-soft-only-a-few-years-ago beats?

as for the content of the tape itself: meh. rocky is ok on the mic. he seems to have some charisma and good presence i guess. i wouldn't go out of my way to listen to him. i do like the fact that he's from NY and is heavily influenced by the houston and other non-NY sounds. might as well embrace your influences, right? look at krit. he sounds exactly like a kid that grew up listening to nothing but ugk and outkast all day and he seems to be accepted as being the direct product of his influences. regionalism in rap is just about dead anyway. ofwgtka sound pretty pan/non-regional to me and currensy would too, if not for his accent

the beats are good, but i feel like i've heard them all before on main attraktionz and lil b tapes. i'm glad clams is getting his and i hope this gets his name out there more

meaning it looks and sounds like it was produced by a team of professionals, vs main attraktionz DIY/bedroom style (not counting '808s + dark grapes'). danny brown said it best: "main attrakt, cloud rap/lo-fi indie rap? dog i'm fuckin with that"

even though i can't stand to hear them rap at times (they're really not very good rappers + squadda's voice can be genuinely annoying), i like main attraktionz more than asap rocky. they seem very grounded and relatively humble, while rocky is cultivating a larger-than-life persona so he has something to live up to. the first time i heard rocky was on '808s and dark grapes' and he was rapping about being sick of being famous ("get off my dick!"? i didn't even think you were well known enough to have folks on there...) i was a little shocked to find that he hadn't even released a tape yet. MA raps through their lives or maybe they're just putting their lives on record. rocky is putting the life he wants on record

I actually hated Squadda prior to "808s..." but now im fuckin wit dude.

ASAP's hype just seems odd to me. Im beginning to think he must be managed by some dude who's inner circle is hella hipster bloggers. The NY Times piece was waay premature.

you can actually see MA's grind and trajectory

In response to Reply # 0

I have is that ASAP Rocky is biting a lot of people quite a bit. I'm not talking about the already established and explained Houston/TX Rap shit. He already cops to that, I'm pretty sure there's a song on here where he has a line saying Houston rap influenced him and such.

I'm talking about other shit he's biting that fans won't admit. He's biting Wiz Khalifa hard in terms of flow and lyrical content with that swagged out smoked out shit. Which since Wiz jocks Currensy so hard, it means he's also automatically biting Currensy lol.

He's also biting OF pretty hard with the whole anti-establishment, fuck your style of hip-hop attitude. His voice and flow really remind of Hodgy Beats, often times in excess.

Finally, he's doing this call myself a "pretty mothafucka" in a post Lil' B world. That's some heavy swagger jacking there indeed.

The only thing he really does to differentiate himself from the above mentioned is put in a lot of TX influenced shit and rap over fairly unique, extremely banging productions.

Not to say that this makes the album any less enjoyable as far as sound goes....but lack of originality is a fairly big thing for me so it will certainly prevent him from dethroning anybody in my top of 2011 list.

So you guys know I'm not a hater. I happen to like this album and think will be playing it quite a bit in the months to come I'm sure. I'm just keeping a realistic perspective and saying that the guy has to kind of grow into his own as a rapper if he's really going to be worthy of best of lists and that kind of acclaim.

is what prompted Hodgy's "ASAP Copy" comment, he does sound like dude alot and the "Acid Drip" joint sounds just like an OF song.

what's interesting is that his production choices have allowed him to create a "sound" without necessarily doing it vocally. that said, he's a very good rapper and we're talking about whether or not he's a fully formed artist despite having a grand total of one mixtape out for one day. shit, it took wiz six years of reinvention to find something that worked. my hunch is that rocky sheds a lot of the houston stuff when he drops his real debut album.

I do hope that the debut shows a lot more of who he actually is and less of what influenced him/what he likes.

http://pitchfork.com/news/44436-aap-rocky-talks-3-million-record-deal-mainstream-acceptance/

I like how he presents himself so I'm sure he's capable of using his own personality more and developing his own style.

The Wiz influence is more about him being influences Max B (whose sing-song style Wiz bit). The Bone Thugs influence is incredibly prevalent on alot of these songs too.

it sounds like one of those 'fan mashups' on youtube where they take an acapella and lay it on top of some random beat they like. Complete disregard for 'the pocket'.

Now I think ASAP is good where most rappers fail...having fun. But he still needs to put in work to reach a fully developed, undeniable sound.

Shit sounds like a new-school Wu song (in a good way).

Rocky keeps resorting back to the same flow, but the beats are interesting enough to drown him out.

VIBE
A$AP Rocky Talks Debut Album, Musical Influences, and Accepting Gay Fans

link: http://www.vibe.com/posts/aap-rocky-talks-debut-album-musical-influences-and-accepting-gay-fans

When you’ve signed a $3 million record deal and are being pegged as New York’s next game-changing superstar by a bevy of artists and the music press, such unmitigated hype can be crushing. Yet 23-year old Harlem spitter Rocky A$AP welcomes all expectations. The spacey, slang-driven, highly southern rap influenced rhymer—who signed a lucrative deal with Polo Grounds/RCA and recently dropped his buzz-heavy mixtape LiveLoveA$AP—does not fit the mode of the conventional East Coast MC. At times his witty, stoner-guided music sounds like what would happen if Harlem World’s seminal clique The Diplomats were born and raised in Houston, Texas instead of the Rotten Apple.

“When I was 11, my favorite song was Three 6 Mafia’s “Sippin’ On Some Syrup,” he says to VIBE of the Dirty South classic. “I used to go crazy when that song came on! I didn’t known they were talking about that lean. I thought they were talking about pancake syrup . But I just knew I loved it. Honestly, I’ve been influenced by everything…from Dipset, Mobb Deep and the Wu-Tang Clan to No Limit, Cash Money, UGK and Bone Thugs N Harmony. I think with all of those influences I have been able to use them to my advantage because it helps me be more diverse as an artist.”

Rocky, who first made waves with his Internet hit “Peso” this past summer, says that cosigns by the headlining likes of Drake (he is set to go out on the Young Money MC’s upcoming Club Paradise Tour) and write-ups in such respected publications as The New York Times, won’t affect his grind. Rocky claims that he is already busy at work on his solo studio debut. “I’m going to give this whole mixtape some time to die out,” he says of his current underground release. “I can say that I’m about a good six tracks done for my Long Live A$SAP album. I’m not going to let the fans down.”

And those fans include a diverse cross-demographic base that may surprise some followers. “I’m respected by all the respected fashion blogs,” he says. “It’s all about diversity. I don’t give a fuck if you white, black, brown or yellow. I really just want to keep the peace. I really love people for who they are. I’m not gay or anything like that, but even gay people—they can be fans too. All the designer stuff I wear is made by gay people. I used to be an ignorant, homophobic cat. I didn’t know any better…I was young. Now that I’m knowledgeable about life all this shit has made me a better person. I feel like the world can be a better place if we learn how to accept each other for who we are.”—K. Murphy (murphdogg29)

Nah...the part I didn't put in there (saving it for another piece) is that he told me he HATES modern NY MC's...He hates modern NY Hip-Hop...He was even rapping (making fun of) some of that current NY rhyme cadence...He says he loves '90s hip-hop better... He said he is especially a DMX STAN...And he says he wished he was a member of the Wu...

I like this guy. He's a better rapper than people will give him credit for, and I applaud his vision for his music, this mixtape sounds as cohesive as an album where most sound cobbled together. I'll be bumping this from time to time for sure.

Rocky creates an atmosphere/mood throughout the record, and even though the Houston critiques are valid, they are over-stated. There is a lot of great music on this mixtape and it seems like he's only going to grow.

my critique is it's 3-4 songs too long and the guest kinda outshine him and he tends to get lost on his own record

7.5 maybe 8 out of 10

lastly, why the fuck was "Get High" NOT on this!?!! its easily better than half of the record

This is one of those strange releases. Today I was listening on the way to school and I wasn't feeling it as much. The best song in my opinion is by far Trilla. Props to Beautiful Lou, I can't get enough of that beat. I also happen to like ASAP's flow on this more than a lot of other songs. So during that car ride, the only one I wanted to hear was Trilla, the rest (Including the much lauded Peso) sounding boring as hell to me.

The ride home was a different story . This album is perfect for a long, night time drive. All of sudden the vibe was clicking with me.

I was ready to say this isn't going to have any replay value, but I can see this sounding good in a variety of settings/moods, so if anything I expect to like it more with further listens.

think you're getting a bit caught up in the houston shit. rocky is a talented rapper, a reasonably good songwriter and the beats are dope. it's a very listenable mixtape unless you're hung up on things unrelated to the actual music.

...I'm being harsh because it simply doesn't jive with me nor the hype of it all. That said, I could care less about the regional swipe/bite. I really think the kid is holding himself back and it's beyond obvious he has a command of words based on the two big interviews he just did.

I will give him this: it's really interesting/compelling stuff considering his whole style from fashion to rhymes to cadence.

But it also isn't very well done. It becomes rote. Fast.

dude has some good songs and he aint no slouch on the mic

but the more i listen to the ish the more corny the ish gets

i seriously doubt he would kno what half the shyt he raps about is if it werent from urbandictionary.com

add on that hes never even been to houston just makes it worse

plus him having no clear style on his own is a problem too

last night i bumped this in the whip and my boy(who had never heard of him before) thought it was wiz until i said sutten

anyway

if he drops some heat imma still bump it

but its goin to be a struggle to take him serious

this is the danger of the internet era, a kid who's obviously got some talent in terms of flow still hasn't developed any real pen game, identity or reason we should give a fuck about him.

'Peso' is cool but not really due to dude, 'Trilla' Lou laced but I couldn't tell you one word on it but the Das-EFX hook I've known since I was younger than ASAP, the rest of this shit is mostly boring or just bad & got worse as it went on.

Yet somehow this young dude has a 'movement' already & minions he's putting on.

It's akin to what if we heard a weak-voiced Jigga doing double-time rhymes about nothing at the dawn of the 90's & that was our album-length introduction.

Artists cook at different paces & this kid needed to be put back on the grill for at least 10 more minutes.

And *still* might give you salmonella poisoning.

The difference between this kid & a young kid like Kendrick Lamar is striking.

Honestly by sheer force of personality, humor, etc Based God kills this kid.

When the backlash comes this dude should hide out for awhile & come back years later when he has something to say.

he has a GREAT ear for beats and creates a great mood/atmosphere thru the whole record, which is something many younger artist don't know how to do. Is he a great rapper? NO, but he is good. does he have a presence personality? yes, in fact the way he changes cadences and flows is a strong quality.

and LOL @ anybody claiming the clown Lil' B got anymore anything than anybody. he is nothing but novelty, Rocky will be more popular and release better music than The Pretty Bitch.

Kendrick is a whole different animal... only Gibbs and Danny Brown better than him from the new crop

Gibbs, Danny Brown, Kendrick, eXquire(!!!) and SOMETIMES Lil B all got shit to say.

Rocky is a kid with no real life experience. Kendrick is young but he's shockingly observant and introspective.

Rocky will get better with age...we could see him surpass all them dudes by next release...who knows.

it's rap. some rappers got insightful, profound, or political shit to say based on experiences and observations/readings, others (most) don't say a fucn thing but i'm fly, do drugs and fuck bitches. great critique there.

just say you don't like it, that's fine, but he will be around just as long as any of the new crop of rappers and i wouldn't be surprised if he ended doing albums that sounded more like the last song or in Wiz cross-over/sell-out lane

"Great ear for beats"

How do we know he's picking these beats? And the concept of giving a rapper credit for picking good beats bugs the fuck out of me. He's not a DJ.

Rappers should be able to rap well, and with a unique style. It's clear that Clams Casino has created a style that he can ride off of. I don't think that ASAPLOVELIFE (is that what it's called?) is a bad listen, but to suggest that he's the savior of anything rap-related is absurd when he's barely being judged for the rapping.

They were like a more rappity-rap/esoteric but less entertaining version of Pharcyde to me when they dropped.

But as for this ASAP shit, you & I can't even discuss it anymore, you think '4 Loko' is tough.

I honestly expected LiveLoveASAP to be better based off 'Peso' & 'Trilla' but by the time I was done it felt like I just sat through a movie where the two biggest laughs were in the trailer.

... but as some previous posters stated, I don't know if ASAP deserves most of the credit for that.

The production is what really caught my ears. ASAP for the most part, just keeps things moving.

He's an average MC that can occasionally craft an above-average song. I can't really see anybody dying to have him make a guest appearance on a track unless they're trying to cash-in on his buzz, and/or he's bringing his producers with him.

I have to say im still enjoying the fuck out of it. As an MC, ASAP is still clearly finding his voice but the hooks and production more than make up for it (so far). Dude is definitely more in a Wiz Khalifa/Drake mode than guys like Danny Brown or Kendrick. As much as enjoy shit like Peso and Kissin Pink, I still appreciate an MC like Curren$y more. That dude's subject matter is pretty shallow too but he is able to say dumb shit in a "smart" way.

Clams, Beautiful Lou and Burn One deserve to get some major placement after their works on this (not that they already didn't). I'd love to hear Spitta over alot of these beats.

about giving up on hating on Currensy and realizing he's potentially the GOAT of Swag Rapping lol (behind Jay-Z back when Jay popularized the style). He does rap about shallow shit, but he's so fucking good at it/detailed/clever that he makes it deep. I don't know, it's like a talented director tackling some issue in a film that you don't give a fuck about...you might wish he'd cover something more relevant...but you can't deny he did a good job.

As for LiveLoveASAP. It continues to grow on me/get stuck in my head. The beats are just undeniable. I still think he's average as hell on the mic, but it doesn't matter really 'cause this album is clearly built on sound, not content or technical ability. I mean even if he's biting heavy, he knows how to ride the beats well and the songs just seem to get better with repeated listens.

All in all, I'd say it's not really worth the buzz it's generated but definitely still counts as strong hip-hop release. I see the potential brewing and I hope him and the crew he rolls with realizes it. Kind of like one of his affiliates, Spaceghostpurrp, they're doing something new. People have done the NY throw back (see Roc Marciano), but nobody's really revived the old, raw south sounds yet, to me my knowledge. Spaceghostpurrps been doing it with the old 3-6 mafia sound. A little too close for my liking lol, wish he'd stop recording shit in such low quality to give it that vibe and would just record full quality tracks.

ASAP Rocky is clearly doing it with the TX sound. I do think that's something to consider, although he's biting TX rap, he's doing it from like a 90's TX angle.

I think we've seen Spitta become the closest thing we could have to a "consensus" rapper today much like Jay was in the early 00s. I do think the "blog rap" tag will forever damn him in alot of people's eyes, much like the people who wrote Jay off as just another "Hot 97 bling rapper" until "Blueprint". That being said, I think Spitta would have to make his Warner "debut" the best album of his career if he's going silence the remaining naysayers.

i would say that's ricky rozay. though well-regarded, currensy has no hits or personality to give him that kind of stature.

His delivery makes the whole thing. I gotta admit that I was surprised Rocky was able to more or less keep up. Q can be way more lyrical than that but he sounds like he's really having fun shit-talking here.

so what he aint really saying shit, it sounds dope regardless.

Palace convinced me of that when the song flipped a bit and he did the "Give me the title, then give me the cash" bit. the punch on that part is incredible.

12|Acid Drip|2:44 (Produced by Soufein3000) 3
Apparently, Hodgy Beats calls him ASAP Copy for this track. I can see it, but as a counter, this is definitely my least liked song on the LP.
13|Leaf (feat. )|4:52 5
14|Roll One Up|2:40 (Produced by DJ Burn One) 4 - 4.5
15|Demons|3:01 3 - 3.5
16|Out of This World|2:48 (Produced by the Olympicks) 4.75 - 5

Overall: 67 - 69 4.25/5 84 - 86%: Exceptional; repeated listens demanded; BUY IT

With the release of LiveLoveA$AP, the positive influence of the internet on the next generation of hip-hop has finally taken form in a way much more easily manageable and accessible than Lil' B. So allow me a bit of token regional exploration before we get to the actual meat of what makes this mixtape so enjoyable. ASAP Rocky is, already famously, a descendant of Harlem and all that entails (Dipset!). His main producer to this point, Clams Casino, hails from the college life of northern New Jersey. Clams' major claims to fame have come via production work for the aforementioned Lil' B and fellow Californians Main Attrakionz. And yet this album opens with a track, "Palace", whose most captivating moment finds Rocky rapping like a forgotten member of Three 6 Mafia's horrorcore era (I vote Koopsta Knicca), and quickly makes inroads on a soundscape that sounds way more Swishahouse circa-1995 than New York, or Jersey, or California circa-anytime. Well, besides the ethereal "Wassup" that brings to mind previous Clams Casino masterstrokes like Lil' B's "I'm God".

The point is, if you care at all about drawing lines in the sand with your hip-hop, LiveLoveA$AP offers a lot of contradiction to your hypothesis. Because in a world where certified technician-style MCs like Jadakiss and Fabolous have spent the past four-ish years trying to bring New York to the sounds of Atlanta, ASAP, Clams and the rest of the people involved with this realized bringing anything anywhere doesn't matter. What's important is that your music feels natural and your persona free of shoehorning. What's absolutely crucial is that you aren't chasing anything, particularly as a rap artist. Granted, it's easier to fake your way to authenticity in hip-hop these days - just ask Rick Ross. But then ask yourselves whether you'd find Ross so easy to deny if the truth didn't deny him for you, or if he's actually quite believable as a decadent Freeway-Ross-that-wasn't-caught behind the veil of Oz. If you come to the conclusion that fantasy is oftentimes more desirable in music than reality, you're ready to focus on what makes ASAP Rocky such a great addition to the scene: his music is awesome.

"Purple Swag" was inescapable in its previous form as a two minute Youtube video, but with added features from fellow Three 6 fanatics SpaceghostPurrp (from Florida of all places, if you're still trying to connect dots) and ASAP Nast it becomes even more of an anthem for lazy summer Sundays than it already was. Elsewhere, "Houston Old Head" is a slow rolling ode to the more earthy knowledge bases of past-generation southern black males, "Leaf" flirts with the upper echelon of 2011's odes to dope smokin' while "Get Lit" and "Roll One Up" act as perfect smoking buddies and, well, "Bass" lives up to its given name. For some, a lack of so-called substance could work against LiveLoveA$AP. Rocky's definitely a young kid talking about the things that please him and little else, which could effectively turn away listeners that hope their hip-hop can take a little timeout from enjoying life every so often to complain about some stuff. But it's this writer's opinion 'realness' doesn't deserve to be confined to ghetto street corners and hyperreal town hall meetings. Sometimes, it can be as simple as sitting in a freshly waxed car, windows dropped, speakers on blast, the world by all accounts your oyster. That's how Rocky and his fellow ASAPs (Always Strive and Prosperers) sees it on "Trilla", and how LiveLoveA$AP allows me to see the world also.

Sometimes, that's all anyone should want to ask for. LiveLoveA$AP is the sort of album that clocks in at nearly an hour but feels like it's over in half that. It's always hard to believe the airy, saxophone-drenched "Keep It G" is our halfway point, or that the slightly darker, inward-looking tones of "Demons" and "Out of This World" are really where we have to part ways. Luckily, that's what repeat settings were designed for, something I've been abusing a bit lately (especially the repeat one function on "Leaf", which is most likely the first instance of Wiz Khalifa's laugh coming off subtly). There are more impressive rapping performances in 2011, from Kendrick Lamar to Jay-Z to Big K.R.I.T. And there are probably a few more notable production jobs as well. Quite frankly, it's hard to argue that LiveLoveA$AP does any one thing better than its closest peers. But by its powers combined, Rocky's debut free album/mixtape/whatever turns in the equivalent of a top-of-his-game Scottie Pippen performance. It looks effortless, and possibly insignificant in comparison to the much more obvious greatness of his closest peer...until you check the stat sheet and realize it adds up to something pretty amazing in its own right.

I've definitely kept coming back to it over the course of the week. Too many criticisms of this album have been along the lines of "...but what's the next album going to sound like"?

I do think ASAP is still figuring out his identity but his growth since "Deep Purple" is undeniable.
