the way people talk about Wale now, it sounds like he went Thatherton on us

The Wale songs I fuck with are uptempo joints with some clever lyrics and a cool hook, ala "My Sweetie" or "Award Tour" off the first LP. Shit like "Nike Boots" or the Justice joint. But I feel like those tracks, which at one point were sort of his trademark, are now becoming few and far between. That new mixtape has a couple ("Fuck You" is my jam right now) and predictably, they're the best songs on the album.

And sometimes Wale tries to be too smart for his own good. He's sort of like Kanye in that when he tries to get a little too ambitious with his concepts, he often falls flat on his face.

The slow, R&Bish joints he's doing now are painful. But the track with Jeremih is a huge hit, something like #4 on either Rhythmic or Urban radio in terms of spins, so I suspect that will be the lane he moves in now. Hell, that next single, the one with Miguel, is pretty part Pt. 2 of that shit, and it's equally awful.

it's weird when rappers like Wale and Lupe find more success in doing what does not come "naturally" to them. Or at least not their best strengths.

When I first heard 100 Miles and Running and Mixtape About Nothing...

I thought dude was going to be one of the "next" artists.

Thought he had potential to blow, and that I was going to follow his career...

Then his debut dropped and it already sounded like he was bored with this sh*t. Sounded like his 4th album...not in a good way.

Stopped checking for him.

When the Rick Ross thing happened...figured dude was just chasing the papes.

I wish him the best, but probably not for me anymore.

I still think Attention Deficit was underrated. That's better than a lot of stuff that got bigger (Kid Cudi's debut, J.Cole's Debut) in my opinion.

I sorta like the new direction. It seems to be paying off dividends..obviously the MMG affiliation has helped tremendously. But frankly, I think Wale sounds quite at home on these Lex Luger-ish uptempo club anthems like "Tats on my arm" "Bait" etc. I think he'll have a lot of success with this album and at the end you've got to do what works, not just what you *think* would work. I think the mixtapes will always give him room to be experimental but mainstream wise if this is what works, I'm not mad at it at all.

Conversation was as follows:

Him: What you think about the Eleven One Eleven Mixtape

Me:

Aye, lots to talk about. First, thanks for blessing me and da wiz wit' some music, young! I'm thoroughly enjoyin' it. Ok, so Eleven one Eleven is good. Let's start with what I like about it. They far outweigh the less salient points. Okay, so THIS nigga can really rap. He's proven it over an over, as we DC niggas have to prove it more so than any other region seems to have to.

You can see how his style has significantly grown from his earlier days, from when they just considered him a go-go rapper. Truthfully, he's been surpassed that for me, but I'm really glad he's carvin' out a niche for DC. He be saying shit that only we'd recognize.

You can see that he has the machine behind'm, but I think that he's losing some of his organic styling....that's not an altogether bad thing. I mean shit, he gotta grow, right? He makes up for it in his Rich Harrison-like percussive tracks. I still prefer more of that Soul vibe, but that's just me....and it's my handle, to boot. Furthermore, you can"t please everyone, nor keep the same vibe all the time.....so I understand that.

Also, I'm such a fan of his Black Thought/b-boy flow (that's the old school rapper in me). He goes in on Drums n Shit. Other standouts for me is Podium w/Black Cobain...that was nice. Fairytales is funny as shit. I love the feel of Pick 6....that felt good. Samples n Shit gives the soulful feel.

He's got great punchlines, but here's my concern; how long is he gonna use sports punchlines? I'm not talkin' just about Pick 6, Barry Sanders, and Varsity Blues. I'm talkin' about all throughout this project and the last few. I kinda liken it to how The Game name drops in every song. I guess every rapper has their own thing *shrugs*. I'm concerned that he's gonna limit his subject matter, after while. Shit though...pretty hard to re-invent the wheel.

Having said all of this, I like More about Nothing better. It's more eclectic. Maybe not as polished, or shit, maybe so. Definitely more organic IMO.

Anyway, I hope u found my evaluation to be fair.

It takes all kinds to make up a world, son. -My pops

I just live for the comments -Da wiz

threw it on The People's iPod, hopped in the Volvo and hit 271.

and I got a few comments/questions

1) this shit is much better as a "major label" project than Attention Deficit was

2) what is it that people dislike about Wale? listening to him on this record, he sounds like he actually IS what jabronis have been saying for years about Wayne... without the drugs fuckin' his delivery up

3) L M M F A O @ Wale rhyming with a hoarse voice and talking about "gimme a cough drop". can't believe they kept that in

4) does Lloyd always sound that much like MJ?

I'm tempted to slap this with the "propane" label. While it's taking me a little to get used to Wale without that good "DC" percussion on the beats, MMG hooked dude up in a big way, but didn't get in the way either.

This shit is actually good. and like Hellyeah said above... I'm kinda glad I waited to hear this shit. this is right on for the changing season.

You may not like WHAT he's rappin about, or the beats, but anyone who says he wasn't spittin is in denial.

dude's voice is just grating to get through some songs and it has a negative effect on the song overall. Dude wasn't doing that shit as much on the two albums prior. and I got a higher tolerance for silliness. "MegaMan" was cool. "Abortion" was actually one of my favorite tracks from that record -- the raps seemed like they were actually on par with his potential, but the increasing gremlins in his voice was just a downgrade.

For what it was I thought it was a cool "major label" project, same as I think about this Wale joint -- the intro/interlude sections were my favorite part (well except Shyne, I had no idea who the hell he was until I Googled it).

I think the real reason I was down on the rapping is the same reason I don't really roll with a lot of the later Eminem albums, and I shake my head at most Jay-Z albums as a whole product in between The Black Album and his latest (except American Gangster)... they gotta dilute themselves in some way to reach the masses often by doing some bullshit to grate on ears.

short of the accessories. Solid mainstream project. Kind of what I expected out of ATTENTION DEFICIT as far as "selling Wale" to the masses. I think the production was top notch for the most part and Wale held his own on those beats... but I kept wanting to hear that "go-go bounce" percussion on every half-measure like the stuff I was used to hearing.

I also heard THE ELEVEN ONE ELEVEN THEORY (mixtape); co-sign RaphaelSoulLee -- cutting off "Drums N Shit" early was some bullshit. At least there was "Fuck You" and "Lacefrontin" to fit the "bongo" quota and "Fairy Tales" was funny as fuck. Also 4 Propane Tanks.

all in all, Wale paired with MMG is a good thing. Rick Ross (if I can credit him for their output) puts out music with the same attention to detail that you'd find in a German automobile.
