"MC's Who's Passion or Personality make up for lack of Technical MC Skill..."

MC's Who's Passion or Personality make up for lack of Technical MC Skills: You need both? The Kanye post made me think about Tupac and a few other MC's who's emotions, passion and approach to the MIC assist with maybe the lack of Technical Skills or deep lyrical ability. Some MC's are almost too technical but some have the passion and emotions that make you overlook (not really a lack of skills) some minor errors in traditional MCing. Some names that come to mind are:

1.Tupac (though more lyrical than people give him credit)
2. Kanye West
3. Chuck D (great MC but I personally dont always dig his style but his passion, voice & personality on the mic (power)helped him.
4. Biggie (ok...wait..lol...what I mean here is Biggie personlity on the mic was so good he could say crazy shit. "you look so good, I'll s*** your..**you know the rest"..lol
5.Snoop...all personality on the mic...early songs he was dope but now he can get by with anything..

just some examples from my perspective...Thoughts...who would you say Passion or Personality get them over the hump? Why?

Peace

as of the Revolutions Per Minute album, Kweli seems to have a much better grasp of delivery than he did on Blackstar;
chooses his words more carefully, uses his words more skillfully.

All though I guess that depend on how you define a n Mc's technical prowess.

He isn't eminem or Jay-z in terms of smooth delivery

But in terms of lyrics/concepts/punchlines/originality you can't front on him

Biggie was just an example of how personality wise he could say what he wanted to and get a pass. Of course Bigge had MAJOR skills all the way around...he was an example

Chuck D to me always seemed a little off beat but the POWER in his voice made you overlook it.

In my humble opinion

He would say shit like "Hope they know my nigga Gutter fuckin kidnip kids/Fuck 'em in the ass, throw 'em over the bridge" but his charisma made it seem like a normal lyric.

Clearly he was madddd skilled technically, though.

in this way, though Kanye has been given the chance to become more lyrical as time progresses. I really believe Kanye is the closest thing to Pac, with the level of emotion and personality that he brings to his music. Sure, they're on different wavelengths, but the feeling is there.

But Biggie? I strongly disagree. Dude was a beast. The best flow, top three storyteller, incredible voice. Even Nas was scared to get in the studio with him for the "Machine Gun Funk" remix.

Kanye is a poor version of Tupac. I agree with your comment.

As for Biggie: see my comment above. Of course he is one of the best, thats not the angle I was coming from.

He said that Big had his verse memorized when he asked him why he wasn't writing. Nas got scared and bounced, to paraphrase.

Any way you can find a link to this interview? I'm sorry I just need something like this from the horse's mouth.

Only reason I'm so shocked is cause I know Nas was so bullshit that Ready to Die took all the awards over Illmatic that year, and I know he had the utmost confidence that he was a better MC at the time. Obviously post Biggie's death he's not gonna still be parading around talkin bout "I'm way better than Biggie was" but I'm surprised to hear that he admitted he was "scared" to get in the booth with him, at any time.

The only reason it sticks out so much in my memory is because I was taken back by Nas's comments, too. I'm 100% certain there's a video interview where Nas talks about it, though.

The closest thing I could find were people talking about it in the comments section of this blog:

http://escobartheory.blogspot.com/2006/12/stocking-stuffers.html

But I'll keep searching.

My G, I understand that. I'm talking about within the context of the song it just came out of nowhere. Also, as a high school dude, I didnt think of Richard Pryor stand-up at that time. Most of you all didnt either. Most of us were teens when Ready to Die dropped. I'm in my mid 30's now and not 17..lol

almost jazz-scat way while knowing exactly where to be on the beat.

That has nothing to do with 'personality' & everything to do with him being blessed with unique vocal abilities while also taking a musician-type of approach to rap as a guy who soaks up music like a sponge plus did tons of production work.

This post is getting dumber by the minute.

Mr. Cheeks got by on personality/charisma, Q-Tip was/is a legitimately great MC/artist.

Biggie? I'm not dissing Q-Tip, I'm just saying his technical abilities were superceded by his charm and charisma.

I'm not saying Q-Tip was like Fat Joe or U-God or something like that technically, but out of all of Tribe's catalog, I can remember lines that he said that were memorable, but not any where I was like, 'man, tip spit flames.'

I'm saying your definition of 'technical abilities' is so narrow it's disregarding some of the main technical aspects of rapping.

You're mistaking what some call 'lyrical' as the end-all be-all for 'technical', then substituting voice/flow/ability-to-meld-ones-voice-with-a-beat for charm/charisma or for the younger folks....swag.

That's why this post is mostly a mess already.

a lot of the Ready to Die material, he was showing off. "Juicy" and basically the other singles were a bad indicator of what Biggie could really do. He could have been the only other rapper besides Snoop that could get away with anything.

and Snoop has one of the five most classically melodic voices in the history of the genre.

Chuck D had a booming, powerful voice that grabbed your attention & he said some shit.

These guys don't really fit the category of what you're talking about in my eyes.

I'd also agree about Snoop - he's usually in the pocket with good flow, but his actual lyrical content is way secondary to his personality and just the way he says whatever he's saying. He could do a whole song of izzle-bizzle chuuuuch and it would sound cool.

Snoop, Eazy E, Tupac, Chuck D all have really distinctive voices. If everything you say sounds good, can you really classify that as personality?

His shtick was actually endearing back then. Outside of a handful of songs he wasn't very enjoyable on the later albums when he was actually taking himself seriously.

over the edge and scoots him up that all-time list (imo)... so i know that doesn't really answer the original question, but still.. because dude's style is kinda hard to latch on to (for some), i'd imagine his personality carries him a long way w/ some ppl.. also, i think his personality is intertwined w/ his diction and rhyme style.. it's crazy how he can be sloppy, sharp, non sequitur, detailed silly and dead serious all at the same time... Ghostface has rare ability

- Cormega
- Too $hort (his game, personality, and old school style make you forget he's been doin the same flow and rhyme scheme since the mid to late 80's)
- The Jacka from Mob Figgaz (west coast Cormega)
- Lil B (hated on him for the longest, but his persona won me over)
- Biz Markie (dope emcee skills, but not a lyricist..)
- Phife Dawg (had a good feel for the music, a unique voice, and knew how to put together songs.. but limited with his rappin skills)
- BFAP/Sunspot Jonz (really choppy awkward flow and off tune sing songy raps, but 100% emotion reminiscent of Pac at his finest.. especially on the old underground Mystik Journeymen tapes).
- I love ODB and think his emcee skills are great/hype, but yeah.. definitely an acquired taste.. What sold me on him was the back&forth spittin' w/the RZA on "Cuttin' Headz"

White Bronco.

I mean, let's be honest. He never was that good, but something about the way he approached rhyming. Even after The War Report where I heard Tragedy was writing for him, he was still making bangers all the way up til Melvyn Flynt. Even God's favorite had some aight songs.

"metaphors and multisylabic rhymes do not trump passion, and lyrical content ( the actual message being communicated)"...THATS ONE OF THE BEST COMMENTS ON THE THREAD PERIOD

I can listen and enjoy a Tupac song much easier than someone spitting alot of shit just to be spitting...trying to sound educated. If the song isnt crafted the right way, it doesnt matter about the lyrics at that point b/c its not a well written song. Tupac, Kanye and a few others actually know how to make a song. The passion and the way the song is actually written is what stands the text of time.

The acknowledgement that personality/image/voice/message can make up for a lack of technical ability? You act like you're blowing minds, but from where I sit you're just saying the same thing most everybody in here is already talking about.

And get out with that tired "white boy" shit. Most of my favorite rappers are big personalities - I'd much rather listen to "The Chronic," which is hardly a technical clinic, than anything Black Thought has ever done (no offense to The Roots though). I enjoy some Big Pun but given the choice I'd rather listen to Kanye. And yeah, I'm white.

He seems like he actually puts thought into his rhymes and appears to be a genuine fan of the game (as evidenced by him putting all those OGs on one track), but on the mic? Dryer than an old woman's vagina.

more fans on OKP than Maino does. But yeah Maino fits the bill, he doesn't have lyrics, flow, or voice. People accept him because of his story, and his exploits.

I realize we're in an era where being genuine isn't really an issue, and I don't care about it as much as I did when I was a wide-eyed youth who thought 2Pac shooting a cop was the coolest thing in the world, but it's nice to see a rapper who is as real as his lyrics.

A dude who's had that street life, and doesn't glorify it. Who did the jail time all the rappers talk about, and says it's not a place you want to be.

Plus, I'm a sucker for underdogs making it.

The same reason I fucks with Glasses Malone.

92. "Did anyone say Murs yet?"
In response to Reply # 0

I love Murs, personally. And I think he's pretty talented, yet I think what makes him so appealing is his personality on the mic. He's got a great presence and is fun to listen to. Doesn't take himself very seriously, and just genuinely seems like someone you'd want to hang out with.

That said, I realize he's pretty damn talented so this isn't to say that his mic presence is the only reason he's worth listening to, I just think that it is the primary reason he's had the longevity he's had, moreso than his talent level.

they aren't going to dazzle you with multis or punchlines.

Their flow isn't anything but average

They're both pretty simplistic, many of their rhymes end in one syllable rhymes, nothing crazy. But yea, the WAY they present what they're saying and even their topics put them on a higher level.

welcome to the only place in the universe where a rapper who flows effortlessly over any tempo, employs multiple syllables and uses constant clever wordplay is "technically unskilled."

Although I think the motherfucker is technically quite gifted as far as timing, rapping, comedic flair, and sheer memorableness of his bars, his personality and style is what gets him over not his metaphors, similes, and time in the rapper library which I think this post is about

Dude got skills, but his content can get a bit stale at times. What keeps me listening is his impeacable sense of rhythm. He is ALWAYS on beat like an extra instrument. Don't know if I'd consider this a flaw or personality trait, but he says nigga like 800 times on every track lol.

I remember when he hit the scene a few years back, I thought, no way this guy is going anywhere. With that name and those lyrics (basically talking about killing people the way Clipse or Jeezy talk about moving cocaine), no chance. Then he signs with Jay-Z and it appears to be on its way. Nothing materializes however, and everyone seems to forget him.

FF three or four years, career seemingly dead, he now has one of the biggest records in all of NY. I never woulda guessed.
