Nick Ashford, one-half of the legendary Motown songwriting duo Ashford & Simpson, has died at age 70. His longtime friend and former publicist Liz Rosenberg told The Associated Press that Ashford — who along with wife Valerie Simpson wrote some of Motown's biggest hits — died Monday in a New York City hospital. He had been suffering from throat cancer and had undergone radiation treatment.
Among the songs Ashford & Simpson penned are "Ain't No Mountain High Enough," ''You're All I Need To Get By" and "Reach Out And Touch Somebody's Hand."

and Brother Man hasn't gotten his due fully as a composer and vocalist. i was watchign New Jack city recently and remembering his performance in it. He is going to be missed.

Wow these are the type of artists I wasn't expecting to hear passing away out of the blue, but I guess everyone has their time and it's never expected, anyway rest in peace Nicholas Ashford.

Not well-versed in his own musical career but the numerous great songs he wrote with valerie Simpsonm can stand up next to anyone; "Your'e precious love" alone is like one of the dopest ballads ever,,,

My intro to A&S songwriting was on Diana Ross's first solo album. They wrote most of the songs on it. Besides the obvious Aint No Mountain and Reach Out and Touch, this track from that album is one of my all time favorites. It's simple and direct:

I knew Nick a little bit from the jams at the Sugar Bar and he was the sweetest, coolest cat. Completely humble & unaffected. Used to be so supportive & praised my singing-I'd be trippin on some--you worked with MARVIN!!
I remember a time when someone was singing 'I'm Every Woman' at the jam and he's just building with me at his table and telling me about when he wrote the song & how good it had been to him. (He loved when Chaka did it but was ECSTATIC when Whitney covered it, lol. $$$)
