"Great covers of Bob Dylan songs"

Looking for good covers of Bob Dylan songs.
I'm sure we can all agree the best belonging to a certain experienced gentleman by the name of James.
Any other good ones?

Jeff Buckley's version of I Shall Be Released from the Live @ Sin-e album is amazing.

I wish he were alive to give that the Hallelujah treatment.

dunno if you're up on Fairport but if not, I think they'd be a band you'd really like.

Less essential for me, but still enjoyable, are

Jack O'Diamonds (you'll have to sit through the first song, but I don't consider that a chore): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oJpLF1cAl1I

Down in the Flood (originally a Sandy Denny solo version, but after she rejoined Fairport they played it): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4q5o6wuI3aE (terrible quality, but should give you an idea)

Tomorrow Is A Long Time (also a Sandy Denny solo track): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XI_8ArJgDgc

Tom Russell did a few Dylan covers on his "Indians, cowboys, Horses, Dogs" record. 'Seven Curses' is a fine cover, but his version of 'Lily, Rosemary & the Jack of Hearts' is pure dynamite. No video available, alas.

From the 'Super Session' album, Steve Stills & Al Kooper's version of 'It Takes A Lot To Laugh, It Takes a Train To Cry' is great: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qz47XGsi2e0

Happy Traum - Buckets of Rain: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WAAzlwn0zBc (I originally learned this from an old Newport Folk Fest sampler from ca. 1992, with Happy and his brother Arty playing this one; Traum's first band 'THe New World Singers,' an otherwise forgettable Folk Revival band, cut the first version of 'Blowin' in the Wind,' even before Dylan covered it... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GXB2fc2I6qg)

In response to Reply # 14

on her album 3 she also does Masters of War, but the lilting melody of this one is particularly suited to Judy and her lovely voice (and shockingly blue eyes). Notably her band on that record featured Jim McGuinn and had versions of Turn! Turn! Turn! and The Bells of Rhymney that presaged the later versions by The Byrds.

Farewell: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pWct5QUsQ9U

Of course, Dylan's song 'Farewell' was ripped, melodically and with a significant lyrical debt as well, from the traditional sea shanty 'The Leaving of Liverpool.' A particularly noteworthy version appeared in 1962 (only a few months before Dylan wrote 'Farewell') on the excellent sea shanty album A Sailor's Garland from eminent UK folklorist Bert Lloyd and Ewan MacColl; MacColl of course married early Dyulan booster Pete Seeger's little sister Peggy, and also featured on that album is excellent fiddling from Dave Swarbrick, later of Fairport Convention noted above). There are tons of later versions of Leaving of Liverpool by bands like the Dubliners, the Pogues, and the Young Dubliners.

the apocalyptic surreal biblical imagery of the lyrics is lost in jimi's arrangement. in fact he even gets some of the lyrics wrong.

dylan's version is perfect. stripped down and eerie. in fact all of john wesley harding is a classic. one of the most underrated albums ever.

and people critising dylan's voice is an idiot who doesn't understand music. he one of the greatest vocalist ever.

He took that song & made it his own to the point where Dylan does it his way in concert out of respect.

It's on the short-list of best rock covers ever, not just Dylan covers but in the history of the genre.

Positively 4th Street-Jerry Garcia/Merl Saunders (from the '72 'Well Matched' live album)
I Shall Be Released/Tom Thumb's Blues-Nina Simone (both on her anthology, The Band's I Shall Be Released is also great)
It's All Over Now, Baby Blue-Van Morrison/Them (13th Floor Elevators version is great too)
Goin To Acopulco-Jim James (off the I'm Not There soundtrack)
If Not For You-George Harrison (though I prefer the demo one that combines George's guitar-lick that he added but with Dylan on vocals that's on Bootleg Series V 1-3)

and then of course the obligatory Jimi's 'Watchtower'.

Worst Dylan cover: Sufjan Stevens 'Ring Them Bells'.

Honorable mention worst: most things involving Bob Weir, Axl's 'hay-haaay-hay-yeah-yeah' bullshit for 'Knocking On Heaven's Door'.

Most overrated Dylan cover: The Byrds' 'Tambourine Man'.

>that combines George's guitar-lick that he added but with
>Dylan on vocals that's on Bootleg Series V 1-3)

the guitar part on that is nearly perfect, imho. Can't remember if it's Bromberg or not, but whoever it is... it's great.

On the other hand wrt that song, there's this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t8ufCojE46o which, while not positively dreadful, is the biggest wast of something that SHOULD have been awesome that I can think of.

I ever mention the coffeehouse show at college where the singer said they were going to do a Clapton song, and played this? Even his band was shaking their heads.

yeah, that's a good one too, it's a pretty difficult song to fuck up.

One of those joints that if you have somebody who can play an acoustic & a couple people that can sing reasonably in key, can sound transcendant in a small room or around a campfire after a couple of drinks.

Hahaha, sounds vaguely familiar but it might just be because I've heard someone say something similar at some point in my travels.

Still not sure how I really feel about Clapton taking the song & laying it over 'Stir It Up' to hit with back in the mid-70s.

I really like Van's voice and the arrangement.

I also really like the Byrds version of You Ain't Going Nowhere.

Cameo credits said song as a major inspiration and would open shows with it.
I know, I can't believe it.

did a great job with that at the 30th Anniversary Concert at MSG.

Vedder just has the perfect voice to tackle that particular song.

in my mind I myself sing that song better than he does there.

The original is such a goofily charming one, even before the Lebowski resurrection.
