"'Jockin' Jay-Z' and other singles that fell into a black hole"
Mon Aug-15-11 02:42 PM by Dr Claw

strangely enough, this song came to mind recently, and it wasn't even with a musical-related thought. The Kansas City Chiefs were playing on my TV, and I saw the coach Jim Zorn on screen.

OKP poster Tiger Woods used to do the whole "Jockin' J-Z, Jockin J-Z" thing when Zorn was coach of the Washington Redskins, and I was like... "hmm, whatever happened to that 'Jockin' Jay-Z' song?"

I can think of a number of songs that it outclassed on BP3. Made me wonder what other big songs fell to the wrath of the bean counters....

Though it appears that was left off due to fan reaction.

MURS' "Dreadlocks" probably falls into the same category. Though I guess that was a b-side to "Better Than the Best" (which also wasn't on the album).

But he was like WTF @ the response. I loved it, and club heads did too....I even argued with folks over it who finally admitted that they just had a problem with him making a club/Hyphy track. He made plenty of "club" songs on previous albums that just didn't sound trendy or like "real" club songs, so his fanbase never had a problem with them

In response to Reply # 63

I few years back I was interviewing MURS for a magazine, and we got to talking about tracks that got left off the "MURS For President" album, and he mentioned a cut called (I called) I believe "Do the President", which he said was a Snap music track (produced by one of the well-known Snap music producers at the time). He said he loved the track, and actually said some political shit on it, but he knew he'd never be able to put it out on the album, because his a lot fans would absolutely revolt like they did with "Drealocks" (for the record, I liked that track).

So my question is, have you heard this track and, if so, would it have solicited the reaction he thought it would?

"Where Y'all At" is a classic, I don't understand how it ended up as a Best Buy only bonus cut on "Hip Hop Is Dead". I definitely DO understand how "The N" ended up as a bonus cut however, it was ass.

A version with Cassidy ended up on Swizz' Ghetto Stories.

Come to grips with the fact that most OKP's are of the Nut Hugger lineage, so, if you' re not part of the little cliques that exist 'round here, your posts will probably tank like Souljaboy's album sales.

but that's my lane though. I think there's something magical in loud busy sounding production, as long as it's well done. I understand how it might be overwhelming to some though. Nas did his thing on there but I wouldn't have been mad if Khalil gave that beat to someone else since Nas didn't use it on an album. I did hear what Chace did over it for his mixtape but I wasn't enthused.

the track fits the sound of both Jay and Kanye from that time period (I assume it was produced by Kanye just cause of the sample)...

>I like this era of Jay-Z.

This is when he was at his best, for sure. Have been listening to Guess Who's Back (from that era as well) recently, as well. He had so much personality and confidence around that time, but didn't sound corny and forced like he does now. I still can't figure out if I feel that way now just cause I know he's fuckin 40 or if it's becauese he's really just not as good as he was. Probly a combination of both.

There's actually an entire unreleased album out there that they scrapped from that period. I remember downloading it back in the day. It should be somewhere out there on the net.

Come to grips with the fact that most OKP's are of the Nut Hugger lineage, so, if you' re not part of the little cliques that exist 'round here, your posts will probably tank like Souljaboy's album sales.

as was brooklyn we go hard

those songs fell by the wayside deservedly so imo
my only beef is that while those songs were terrible imo, i agree that they outclassed songs like venus vs mars, hate, on to the next, off that, which weren't just bad, they were among the worst songs jay has ever done and some of the worst i've heard in years.

personally bp3 should have been an 8 song album based on the available material we know about.

yeah. I mean, there were some good songs, but I'd have taken "Jockin' Jay-Z" over some of them

(WARNING: ironic comment imminent)

...because the hook was so damn funny and memorable. it was less annoying than the "ON TO THE NEXT" being repeated over and over and over through the song

>as was brooklyn we go hard

I'll respectfully disagree with this. The beat was ill, Jay went in, and Santi took it over the top. With a proper video, it could have been one of Jay's biggest singles. Someone dropped the ball tremendously on that one.

>those songs fell by the wayside deservedly so imo

The only song in that list that I would like to remove is On To The Next One. That song had the right amount of bounce and Jay, once again, did what was necessary, lyrically, to make it memorable. And, hate Swizz as much as some do (I don't), but he's the king of taking a sound that could possibly be grating and making it melodic enough to make you move.

And, lastly, I'd like to add Forever Young to the list. Damn that shit was forced.

Come to grips with the fact that most OKP's are of the Nut Hugger lineage, so, if you' re not part of the little cliques that exist 'round here, your posts will probably tank like Souljaboy's album sales.

Snoop dropped a lot of heat around that time which all seemed to just disappear because of his label issues. I found a lot of it on youtube recently which made me happy. A song called Never Again sticks out.

back when Snoop was having his Death Row issues, when all this shit was dropping, he dropped original versions of Every Single Day (one of my favorite Snoop/Dogg Pound songs ever made) and County Blues on the radio or online through some website (I think it was called snoopsdogghouse.com or some shit) that some kid ran, and somehow this kid had intricate access to a lot of the rarer Snoop shit. It was cool.

Anyway, those two songs both ended up on Dead Man Walking but neither was as simple and dope as the original. The powers that be on Death Row at the time added some unnecessary elements to both beats which kind of ruined what they were originally, which sucks. Cuase the original versions I have are so dope but are such poor quality, I'd like to have them in CDQ but the Dead Man Walking ones just ain't the same.

I remember some of the LBC Crew leftovers and tracks that ended up on shit like DPG 2002 and Death Row's "Snoop's Greatest hits" that never came out on time.

I never knew where those kids were gettin songs from...you talkin bout the website that had the Realplayer songs up??? Damn I remember those days though! And yeah, a LOT Of those songs got spiced and messed up when they tried to add elements or have another producer re-do them.

I had a specific folder on my old old old computer for Snoop songs, another specific folder for Kurupt/Death Row songs, and another folder for the rest of the West Coast shit I found around that time. It'd be wild if I could re-up that computer and get all those songs; I got most of the ones I remember loving, but there had to be upwards of 100-150 unreleased, rare Snoop/DPG/West Coast tracks on that computer that I forget about that were dope as fuck.

Here's the version of Every Single Day that Snoop played on Power 106 back when he was leaving Death Row. It's sloppy, and radio editted, but it doesn't have that annoying...sound (don't even know what it is) playing throughout it like the one on 2002 does (I previously incorrectly said it was on Dead Man Walking).

It was on Lebron's documentary, but it was also supposed to be the lead-off single to her last album. Did so badly that they changed the title of the album & didn't even include that song.

It was supposed to be the 1st single off Teflon Don produced by John Legend, and I remember them tweeting about shooting the video and releasing a teaser. I was pretty hype about it, thinking it would be a continuation of the lush, upscale sound from Deeper Than Rap...perfect for the upcoming summer. It didn't even make it to the retail, being buried on a mixtape. BMF took off, sparked a littany of clones and that was that...

Streets won't let me chill.

>please explain to me how that failed.

It might have failed as a single, but it made it onto Darkside Vol. 1.

Come to grips with the fact that most OKP's are of the Nut Hugger lineage, so, if you' re not part of the little cliques that exist 'round here, your posts will probably tank like Souljaboy's album sales.

I don't know how it did commercially (I heard it on the radio a handful of times) but I thought it had classic status solely for the beat.

It's supposed to be about songs that came out labeled as "singles" for an album then didn't make the album.
