STAY on Kyoto Jazz Massive, although that's more toward broken beat/nu-jazz than what you're talking bout.

just started listening to hiromi uehara, lately. (i can't get enough of IF).

she's japanese but studied over here and i don't the band would fall under what you lookin' for. she gets it IN, though:

especially the groups with vocalists.

I only have one single by orange pekoe, but I'll try to check out their other material.

as for Ego Wrappin', there's an album called Ego-Wrappin' and The Gossip of Jaxx that is more of a jazz/rock album that I actually prefer over their normal stuff.

well, 'tons' may be overstating, but there are a few bands I like a lot.

Byeond Ska-Para referenced below,

Determinations
Scafull King
Shoulder Hopper

The Boom is just about my favorite band, and their early stuff is very ska-flavored with some folky overtones. Later on they began mixing in all kinds of stuff, which is my favorite period, but they might be worth a try.

Kusu Kusu was another, more or less completely forgotten in Japan, band from the early '90s that mixed ska with an international (especially Congolese and Brazilian) vibe. Records are very up and down but their good stuff is great.

I'm actually disappointed to hear this. I played the hell out of this album (actually gonna listen again in a few minutes) and I was wondering how their other stuff compares.

I think their normal stuff is good too, but that style on Gossip of Jaxx fits my overall musical preferences more.

The last album has some pretty good songs on it and is worth checking out.

I forgot to mention her here, maybe because it's more jazzy pop than anything else, but Toki Asako is someone people here might want to check out.

for jazz,

Yosuke Yamashita - he's more free jazz, though;

Kazumi (sometimes Katsumi) Watanabe - terrific guitarist, maybe a bit too facile, but he's done stuff all over the map. the two albums I have from him are both acoustic duets records (Oyatus & Oyatsu II) but he's got plenty of fusion including some funky stuff.

Sadao Watanabe - best known for his Brazilian/bossa material, but he's been recording since '61 and has material traversing the jazz universe.

For more modern stuff along the lines of what most posters above are recommending, though with a slightly dated twist, I'd suggest trying United Future Organization, who cut a few records in the '90s as a trio of DJs with very eclectic tastes.
A stylistically/chronologically related record is the Jazz Hip Jap compilation. Terrible name but it gives a pretty good overview as to how funk and funky stuff tied into the early '90s scene with the beginnings of nu-jazz and hip hop, including an amusing early cut from DJ Krush with Monday Michiru on vocals.

And for funky stuff, don't write off the Tokyo Ska Paradise Orchestra... they're nominally a ska band, but they've got a lot of classic soul influence in their arrangements and repertoire. I'd recommend their song 'Just A Little Bit O'Your Soul' http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OnYNHeCqIg0 - especially the version where they got Bernard Purdie into the studio. It's one of my big regrets that I never got to see those guys while I lived there.

Funk: http://www.megaupload.com/?d=PKOSEC4F

Jazz: http://www.megaupload.com/?d=2TI4D033

I tried to give as much of a wide spectrum as possible from my library without repeating artists over the 15+ tracks for each folder. The jazz folder may have some 'jazzy' r&b or hip-hop because my jazz catalogue is sorta thin compared to my funk collection. Either way, I hope all who download enjoy it.

Alot of good suggestions in here so far, and alot I need to check out as well (especially the jazz).

Tatsuro Yamashita, Soil & Pimp Sessions, and Casiopea are damn near can't miss for good s**t. I would go as far as labeling Yamashita as Stevie Wonder's Japanese doppelganger in regards to longevity and dopeness.

A few suggestions I haven't seen mentioned yet, most of these artists are part of the folders I uploaded

Funk:
Toshinobu Kubota
Minako Yoshida

Jazz:
Masayoshi Nakataka
Yumi Matsutoya
Kimiko Kasai
JuJu

I'm going to keep an eye on this thread and have my notebook in hand....

Hatsumi Shibata is free soulish...this album
(1975) was produced by Yuji Ohno...fiyah

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X43eMCZ4HZM

Spectrum is a jazz funk band along the lines
of EWF. This one is off their 2nd album (1979?)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=78TWZ8WrDK4

Hosono Haruomi (YMO fame): personally my favorite japanese
musician and probably in my top 5 all-time...he
can do and has done almost every genre...this is
off his solo debut 1973..has some folky rock leanings
but still funky

Definitely had to bookmark. The hubby and I are totally into J-Pop and Jazz.

A good portion of the record is covers of classics by Don Blackman, Eddie Russ, Rose Royce, and Aquarian Dream. The rest are originals inspired by the jazz-funk era.

It's hella expensive (I think Dusty Groove has it for over $30) but Okino is part of Kyoto Jazz Massive and just about anything he makes is worth checking out.

It is all 70s/80s, but in a lot of circles it was (is?) the definitive starting point for Japanese jazz-funk. Came out in the 90s but copies are still floating around.
