"Stevie Wonder's drumming."
Fri Jul-29-11 10:28 AM by AFKAP_of_Darkness

STILL criminally underrated.

Why?

He might be my favorite drummer of all time. (Other than NEIL PEART!!!!!!!)

Anybody know whether he provided the drums and percussions on the Supremes' "Bad Weather" himself? http://youtu.be/ZEz3Ph-VoiU

Am I tripping or did I once read that Stevie records his drum parts one at a time like Leon Sylvers did?

My favorite Steve on the drums moments

He's Misstra Know It All (the long fade it brilliant)
Sugar
Buttercup (assuming it's him on the J5 version. Sheesh)
Power Flower
Blame It On The Sun
Summer Soft
That Girl
Superstition (he talked about getting out of pocket and not correcting it during mixing.)
Knocks Me Off My Feet (the hi-hat on this is the 8th wonder of the world, no pun.)
Joy Inside My Tears

_______________
Good...I'm glad

>Am I tripping or did I once read that Stevie records his drum
>parts one at a time like Leon Sylvers did?

Do you mean he plays each piece of the drum ensemble separately?

That is totally insane.

>My favorite Steve on the drums moments
>
>He's Misstra Know It All (the long fade it brilliant)

oh yeah.... sends chills up my spine every time I hear that!

>Sugar

I really love his drumming from this era, just straight-ahead Motown groove, no frills.

>Buttercup (assuming it's him on the J5 version. Sheesh)

I don't know if that's him but it certainly sounds like his style, though somewhat more stripped down and straightforward than what I expect from Stevie.

>Blame It On The Sun

Yeah, those drums are so moody and reflective. Stevie is one of the few drummers who I feel actually conveys as much emotion through his drums as he does through his vocals or his performance on melodic instruments.

>That Girl

That might have been the first song that I remember really noticing Stevie's drumming on... and coincidentally enough, according to ?uest, it was the last song he actually played live on.

>Superstition (he talked about getting out of pocket and not
>correcting it during mixing.)

His early 1970s LPs have quite a few moments like that, which is what makes them sound so joyous and spontaneous 40 years later.

>Knocks Me Off My Feet (the hi-hat on this is the 8th wonder of
>the world, no pun.)

This was my favorite Stevie Wonder drum performance for years. It was the one that made me realize that just because you're singing a midtempo or a ballad, doesn't mean your drums shouldn't kick like fuck! (Al Jackson's performance on Al Green's records was my further education in this concept)

I remember reading he recorded each part separately on some tracks. Insane indeed considering how spontaneous and fluid the end result usually is.

So you mean he PLAYED the complete drum ensemble each time but micing different sections in different sessions?

That's still pretty crazy, though...

I don't know what is more mind-blowing on this track: the drumming or the vocals by Stevie and Rita.

it had a terribly rhythmic, almost sloppy-sounding snare. It's amazing how the drums seem in time and drag behind all at once. I'm glad he didn't do the alias thing too tough (that Eivets Rednow shit ain't fool a soul) because his touch would've told on him every time.

I like Prince's bass* playing on his first couple of records but from the mid-80s onwards, I can't think of too many times he's arrested my attention in that way.

You wanna throw up a few specimens to persuade me to reconsider?

*and rhythm guitar!

Maybe it's just me because I'm not as deep into Prince as some other folks, but I can't recognize Prince's "voice" on any particular instrument... though I can recognize his overall sound(s).

And that's (one of the reasons) why I'll always rank Stevie far above Prince even though it seems fashionable these days to give P the crown because he plays more instruments and has displayed a wider stylistic range. I think Stevie *inhabits* his sound a lot more deeply than P does.

Yes, I would agree that the drum programming is Prince's signature instrumental voice. Especially in the early 80s.

I don't exactly hear the (lead) guitar, personally.

I mean... I *do* know P's guitar voice. That mid-70s Santana vibe thing. But for some reason I've never found it distinctive enough.

I've always LOVED his rhythm guitar, though... it don't sound as sharp as it used to, but that's probably due to the way he's recording it now.

i think one of the problems w/isolating Prince on instruments is we're used to hearing him play everything on a song - and usually a song HE wrote. his sound is about the sum of the parts, not the parts as individual pieces. that's why i picked this song to figure out if we can hear a voice on keys. b/c all Prince does on this song is play keys. he didn't even write it.

fuck you.

He has a voice on three instruments...

Drumming (or drum programming)

Rhythm guitar (he's probably the best of his generation in this department....From "Sexy Dancer" to "Controversy" to even "Musicology"...He is fluid in that regard...)

Keyboards/Piano (it's all in the cold sounding "Prince" chords....)

The irony is in the last decade Prince has become a better lead guitarist...His tone no longer is just a nod to Santana as it was in the '80s and much of the '90s....It's gotten much more harder....

And yeah...Stevie is a FUCKING BEAST on drums....I still get a kick out of seeing him in that making of Songs In The Key of Life special...

GOAT of his era......long live Prince.....God is alive....

yeah you can say him on rhythmn guitar though Nile Rogers,Roger Troutman are there IMO.

even when you pick rhythm guitar, drum programming, never cared much for Prince as a drummer

the minniapolis sound was ding, ding the sound not based on his dominating a instrument per se, but the sound was connected.

it was the overall thing not one thing

I would also agree Stevie's drumming >>> P's Bass playing... but not by a very wide margin. Watching P stand toe to toe with Larry Graham and hold his own really gave me a new respect for the way P handles the bass.

>Maybe it's just me because I'm not as deep into Prince as some
>other folks, but I can't recognize Prince's "voice" on any
>particular instrument...

I think Prince has a voice on rhythm guitar... I'd say lead too but I really don't want to open that box right now. And while I know it's a little different I'd say Prince showed a "voice" on the Linn... so much so that those patterns are universally heard as his.

>And that's (one of the reasons) why I'll always rank Stevie
>far above Prince even though it seems fashionable these days
>to give P the crown because he plays more instruments and has
>displayed a wider stylistic range. I think Stevie *inhabits*
>his sound a lot more deeply than P does.

I love both so I'll leave this be.... but most people already know where I stand on this.

Some of Stevie's best songs are those somewhat moody, reflective ones... which is something that I think made him stand out from most other artists on the soul scene; soul traditionally was not that inward-looking.

Shit,.,. I need to go listen to that song now.

It has been reported that both men were edgy during the session. Stevie was nervous and Jimi was in his "moods".

I agree, it makes you wish. I could hear Jimi doing some serious damage to "Maybe Your Baby" or even "Superstition" on rhythm guitar instead of Ray Parker Jr.

Bootsy Collins falls in that category also as being a great drummer that people don't think of for their drumming

i think you ref'd knocks me off my feet earlier, too, which I'd agree with. Funny thing about those performances is sometimes when I hear them, when I hear those sort of drawn out textural moments, I think - wait, that's a little corny?

Given his paranoia and the goonies he sends to folks, I can't seem to find the clips in youtube, but listen to them on your own later.

Drums: Tambourine - He was channeling Sheila E. on this one.

Guitar: Bambi(The Undertaker version - from 1993) - To me, this is his most outrageous guitar solo ever. Its a shame this whole session is a bootleg because the whole thing showcased what an underrated guitarist he is. I'd say his finest hour as far as guitar soloing was during the 93-94 years.

Bass: She's Always In My Hair. Its way down in the bottom and as much as I love D's version, I'm afraid he didn't capture the bass fire. Some outrageous basslines are scattered all over The Camille & Black albums too.

Rhythm guitar: ALL of his 80s extended versions. Although I'm not sure whether he's the one playing in the beginning of Hello or Wendy.

Yeah, that's been one of my faves... The rhythm guitar is pretty crazy as well.

I'll have to search that one out.

I have not listened much to those two albums, truth be told. I've just never been that much into that era of Prince. I'll have to give 'em a listen this weekend to see if I can hear what you're talking about.

My favorite rhythm guitar showcases are late 70s/early 80s pieces like Controversy, I Wanna Be Your Lover, Sexy Dancer, Sexuality, etc.

Those, and Curtis Mayfield were what I used to study when I was trynna learn how to play funky rhythm.

I think he & Roger Troutman are THEE best rhythm guitarists ever IMO. They stayed true to the JB/Nolen tradition but they expanded their own style individually and this is why I rank them in a tie.

Not as ferocious as his playing in most of his songs, but I love what he did with these two...

My brother who's NOWHERE near a fan didn't believe his ears when I played for him "Movie Star".

I think most of the stuff that ended up in his vault surpassed his official releases, and I understand his need for shelving some of them. But If he didn't release "Crystal Ball" and "Power Fantastic" officially, I would've given up hope on him having the least bit of common sense.

I hope this won't sound out of taste, but I just hope he won't pull a Stevie Wonder on his shelved musical estate when he dies.

hes got a lot of personality. hes not afraid to do unusual sounding stuff. he sounds really playful and theres something almost childlike about his drumming (not like meg white) that i cant quite put my finger on. his drumming actually reminds me a bit of princes (if you listen to stuff like new position or cloreen bacon skin). they sound like guys who obv arent 24/7 drummers but still know their way around a kit so when they do do it it sounds 'fresh'. i think this also lets them do stuff that normal drummers might stay away from doing. theyre good but not 'experts' in a way that someone who spends all their time behind a set of drums would be.

edit - actually i think him and prince both manage to sound really spontaneous when they do live drum tracks. maybe they dont do millions of takes as drummers which is what gives it that 'first take' feel but they do generally turn in really lively performances (thinking esp of albums like where im coming from in particular).

think about albums like Talking Book and Music of My Mind...the drums, though in the pocket, dictate the feeling of those songs as if they were a melody instrument...his drums take you on a journey without ever leaving the ship...its really what inspired me to start playing drums...

because a lot of people never knew (or could imagine) Stevie on the drums when they don't regularly see it (or nowadays, hear it).

as for the discussion above re: Prince.

he has two distinct voices: rhythm guitar (but as you said it, mostly in the late '70s/early '80s when he was playing the kind of music that needed it to survive), and the Linn drum machine. Immediately after hearing either, you know it's "Prince" (and the latter, is really what people try to imitate more than anything else when they want a "Prince" sound. It's one of the reasons I can sit through 10 minutes of Dam Funk noodling -- the "Princely" drums above all).

I'd also argue that while I couldn't really pick out Prince playing a keyboard solo as "Prince" as I could Herbie, Dukey, or Chick... except when it's that "Princey" stuff (see: "When Doves Cry"), the big "Prince" sound on keys is the voice programming.

to this day you have people (self included) trying to crack the code of those Oberheims to get the "horn" sound (I think it was programming + engineering on the recording side to get that out).
