"Prince!!!! Live!!!! On a bloomin' Farm!!!"

I've gone from insane jealousy of anyone who was lucky enough to attend the LA 21 nights to extreme relief and excitement that I can see Prince Live again! The dude will be at this http://www.hopfarmfestival.com/home.aspx on 3rd July! Anyone else attending?

I've always said that the only thing that would get me to go to an outdoor festival here in the UK where I live is Prince! Lo and behold my prediction has come true!

Now I have a question. How old were you when you got into Prince? When did you finally realize that some of his tunes may not have been age appropriate for you? I got into his music when i was 11. I find it hilarious that I purchased the vinyl of Dirty Minds without anyone in the record shop blinking an eye. I had no clue what Head was about but I sung along merrily to it! Couple couple of Jackie Collins books at 13 and I realised what the hell some of the lyrics were about. I still cringe about it!

I grew up on Prince, but didn't start collecting his stuff until around
14 when I heard my older brother's Hits cd... he had the 3 disc set.
That's when it clicked that this Prince guy was more versatile and
amazing that I initially thought. It was also because of Prince that
I got into more rock music.

Puntastic! heh heh I actually liked rock / alternative stuff a little bit even before Prince as I have a brother who was into velvet underground, iggy pop so I heard different stuff and I loved def leopard lol My sister insists that I liked meatloaf but i really don't recall that! My other brother is a jazz head so he took me to see Miles davis when i was around 10 so i was fortunate to have learned to love good music regardless of genre...

Have you ever seen this video http://www.amazon.com/Prince-Revolution-Live-VHS/dp/630237426X/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1307286918&sr=8-4

It was shown on TV in England weirdly on a Sunday afternoon 1985 I think. I'll never forget it! It totally made me a Prince fan for life as it was the first live performance I'd seen of him and it was so amazing. Thank god i got to see the Parade Tour...unbelievable experience!

The only thing live that I've seen in full is the Rave DVD. I actually
saw that when it came on TV. I've seen pieces of Sign O' The Times, but
I've seen every one of his movies.

with stuff like The Last Waltz & Stop Making Sense, though I'd personally give Last Waltz the nod for the top spot.

Problem is that there was never really a true DVD release, just imports you could get that played like dubbed versions of the VHS version.

I would hope that eventually they'd put out a Blu-Ray version with all the extra footage, some present day interviews, etc.

But sadly much like most of the music recorded during his peak years that will likely never happen with the Prince/WarnerBrothers situation.

I've never heard of the last waltz. Stop Making Sense show I have loved since way back. I had it on vhs years ago but bought a dvd copy a couple of years back...it still is a brilliant concert.

The link to live prince vhs I posted above somewhere is really worth buying it's amazing...

It's a Martin Scorsese directed movie from the mid-70s documenting The Band's final concert on Thanksgiving in 76 with a host of guests performing with them & little behind-the-scenes stuff as well.

Guests include Bob Dylan, Muddy Waters, Eric Clapton, The Staples Singers, Joni Mitchell, Dr. John, Van Morrison, Neil Young, George Harrison, Ronnie Hawkins, and a bunch more.

I'll check it out.

I still have my Sign O' The Times VHS stored away somewhere but I haven't owned a VCR in nearly a decade now so I pretty much rely on it popping up on cable every now and then.

The movie desperately needs a Deluxe Blu-Ray/Bonuses treatment so that newer generations of fans can appreciate it.

I won't hold my breath waiting on it though.

My older sisters got into him early on so I know his catalog pretty well.

Went to the alphabet street concert in Pittsburgh with the basketball hoop on the stage. He dribbled through the legs 2 times and hit a 15 ft jump shot in heels and went back to playing a song so I know the Dave Chapelle/Charlie Murphy skit was true.

Just saw him in Charlotte and Greensboro a month ago. He still got it. Best show I've ever seen and I've seen Michael Jackson live too.

Yes! Another early starter!ha! I saw the Alphabet Street tour and his B'ball skills! In heels! So for real I believe the Charlie skit too! Even the pancake part! I somehow managed to be a steward at these shows and got into big trouble because I wasn't wearing the right 'blouse' and for not telling people not to smoke etc I was too busy watching the show! I only managed to steward at the 2nd night by the skin of my teeth! I'm glad you caught a recent show. I never caught any of the MJ shows in the 80s and i love MJ but there's something about prince that got me hooked!

er he basically isn't. I saw 3 of his 21 nights in London and each show was different and damned good wish I could have gone to more! The Hop Farm Festival is actually a very cool independent no sponsorship or branding event. It's all about the music so Prince chose well. Now you run along and check up on R Kelly and make sure he's not getting up to any mischief

Was my first album/introduction to both of Chaka Khan & Prince' worlds. Bought the used copy on a damn near free-sale price that didn't do its value any justice at all lol not that I'm complaining.

Loved the production so much, I decided to check the man behind the interesting production, couple of months later "Rave Un2 The Joy Fantastic" was released and I fell in love.

Next stop was the "Hits/B-Sides" and BOOM a whole new dimension emerged right before my eye, I was wrapping up high school. 12 years later, I'm discovering new things from his music, whether in boots or stuff I already own but didn't pay much attention to in the past.

Enjoy the concert, can't say I'm not jealous myself either lol....

I can remember Prince very clearly from my early years: the singles from 1999, somehow knowing songs like "I Wanna Be Your Lover" and the like, and my cousin's Controversy poster (that creepy underwear picture) that she had on the wall. We had the Purple Rain tape, which we rocked regularly in the Volvo -- that I highly suspect my mother being the one who OK-ed/purchased it, I'm surprised it got any play.

Basically followed him to some degree since then. Loved "Kiss", SOTT, even "Batdance" and stuff like that. That whole BATMAN era led into the reunion of The Time, and I really dug that. Shocked to see all those guys together again. "Jerk Out" was and still is my shit.

Around '91 and '92 I really started laughing my ass off @ his music with songs like "My Name Is Prince" and later on, that "Gangsta Glam" stuff really had me peacing out.

as for when I really started listening to his music with a much more careful ear... it was around the same time I really started getting deep into older music, cause rap was starting to be less "consensus" and whatnot... I had put it off for the longest, but I started at FOR YOU and went forward.

Really went into a phase about 5 years ago with his music. Even caught up and watched the Purple Rain movie, which I had not seen in its entirety until then.

for sure some of his material is not to my taste, however he has so much great material it is easy to skip anything not to your liking. His live shows are just so value for money. I went to the last night the 21 nights in London (everyone got given a purple glowstick so the whole arena was a purple haze) and then to the after show, dude a on stage till like 3.30am.

One thing I am still vexed about is that the London SOTT shows were cancelled. I spent all my birthday money on tickets, I had my peach and black outfit. I was and am gutted that the shows didn't happen. I hated Paris cuz he went there and rocked it! lol

We regularly belted out tunes from Purple Rain in the girls loos at school 'Darling Nikki' with extra volume of course! Did your mum hear /play all the tracks from Purple Rain?

The underwear shot was from Dirty Minds album wasn't it or did he do it on controversy too?

I never bought Purple Rain as I used to hijack my sisters purple vinyl copy!

Great Cybertron, that had to have been an experience.

LMAO! I'm not sure. She was very particular about what we were exposed to at children, but I also learned (from her directly) that she was a KISS fan. So I don't put it behind her to be a fan of Prince. His music was more in line with my older cousins, though. Given that Purple Rain was one of his more "tame" albums in that period, I figure that it was OK. Though, "Darling Nikki" I remember hearing the least. That was the "controversial" song, LOL.

>The underwear shot was from Dirty Minds album wasn't it or did

It was a poster that came with the Controversy record, I think. It looked like the Dirty Mind cover, but somehow even more trashy, LOL

Yes, I'm mad. Let's move on.

Glad that there's part of Prince's catalogue that you like. Regarding R, I've never been a big fan of his music , i like a a few tunes, however I did see a live show of his in the early 90's and I won't lie it was actually really good, I was given free tickets and I felt really guilty because a true fan deserved to have them. What surprised me even more was that women were climbing over seats to try and get to the stage! It was like something out of the Five Heartbeats! As good as it was it doesn't top any Prince live shows

over 20 years back IMO and only live shows is all i'd waste my time on,because i ain't liked a record of his since 87.

naw he ain't seeing no r.Kelly, because Kelly still got the game, and compare them two decades into the game and Kelly has out lasted him.

Kelly still got the cuts, his new tour is smoking as well i caught some footage and it is on point and soulful the opening part of the show is funny.

Prince is Yesterdays news R.kelly is todays news that is the difference.

Kelly is back on his Chocolate Factory grind...And thank God...Because he was embarrassing himself with songs about animals fucking in Zoos....I'm hoping he keeps it up...He's too talented to be slumming it...

alot like Kobe bryant and you know this already.

funny back in 1996 before emancipation came out and during that corny symbol era whom did prince say he wanted to get even with on the charts? one Robert Kelly because bump and grind kept the most beautiful girl out of number 1 and prince said next time i'm in chicgo i'm gonna let him know.

they only met once. kellz said they didn't click, but he respects prince,etc..

prince is old news especially in the studio, but you are allowed to remember way back when, prince himself will tell you his prime and peak was the 80's, he is a oldies but goodies tour act.

and you can't talk about embarassing, because prince with tony m and trying to pose, rapping, weak attempts at new jack swing, broke dance hall attempts.

that mess was corny, bloated and caused him to lose alot of points musically with alot of folks.

but you stay inhailing that purple pitcher and you stay in the diabetic purple clinic of denial.

you aren't a balanced writer at all,for if you were then you would know that kellz has had a bigger impact on R&B music and has surppased prince there.

you can say whom you prefer all day, much respect, but you short change R.kelly's impact on Modern R&B and he has ran things for years.

and personally i can write alot of thhe so called writers under the table because i bring up facts on this here and R.kelly has out lasted prince.

if prince wasn't still legit live, then he would be washing dishes with Eugene Wilde at the golden Skillet.

stage is all prince got, his albums have been bland for years and he gives them away and they are just used as coasters.

In response to Reply # 0

...I remember some of his hits and videos. I remember Prince always being weird, but I would always listen to and watch anything that he did. He intrigued me back in the 80s. Especially when that performance where he debuted that yellow jumpsuit with the ass cheeks out. I liked When Doves Cry and quite a few other songs. I watched that crazy ass movie and remember not wanting to watch it ever again though.

Fast forward to the present as I finally got my hands on some of his complete albums and I was really excited to finally hear them in full. Unfortunately, I wish I hadn't taken the time to explore his work. When you begin to explore a popular artist past their hits and singles you tend to find stuff that you really like. Hidden gems that shine the brightest to you. I could not find anything like that within his work that did that for me. It was the first time in an artist's discography that I could not find anything better than just the hit singles.

I came to the conclusion that it was the fact that his singles are the only songs on his albums that stick out the most. The rest of them sound like one long ass song or some of them are way too dated to bear listening to. Not only that, but his vocals are a real test of patience in some cases aka some real bad singing. This is just his late 70s-early 90s work coupled with some of the 00s albums that I'm basing this opinion on. I'm really scared about exploring the newer stuff. If there is one thing I do have to say though, is that I think that the instrumentation of the songs (I think that's the correct term for it) like the way that all of the instruments sound together has really improved greatly since his 80s work. They actually sound way more cohesive today.

That being said I'm still having an issue with his vocals, lyrics, and the fact that everything sounds just about the same. Whenever I hear any newer songs from other artists that bear any kind of resemblance to his 80s work I turn that off as well as something about it really puts me off. I was thinking about seeing him live, but I'm not really motivated to. I mean...he is still Prince afterall, but I'think that I'm so disillusioned with his studio work that I can't. I just can't.

you thinking too hard bruh... I don't see how you can't bring yourself to see him live because of disillusion.

I think you need to check yourself/ego at the door and just enjoy a good live show from a legend.

Madonna and Britney Spears are considered legends as well. Will you be able to check your ego at the door and just enjoy the show?

Even though because someone is considered to be a 'legend' doesn't mean shit. Your response is proof right there.

40. "i liked MJ more before prince"
In response to Reply # 0

i was obsessed with MJ as a little kid. made my mum buy me moonwalk the day it came out etc. even stopped sharing food when i read mj didnt do this cos of germs lol. my cousins liked prince cos they were older but i was adadmant that mj was better. but when i turned 10 or 11 somehow prince looked more exciting.

i still liked mj and dangerous (cos i liked new jack swing and R&B of the time) but graffiti bridge and diamonds and pearls i was more interested in. and that was when i got a bit obsessed with prince, buying everything of his i could, limited editions, bootlegs, books etc etc. weirdly though, this didnt last that long, as around 93/94 hip hop came along and basically took over my listening habits. i stopped liking prince as much - though i kept a check on what he was doing - and got back into him in the late 90s.

so if im honest hes probably my 'favourite' artist, or the artist, who i can listen to new stuff from, even the crappier stuff, and still sort of like it, just cos its prince (strangely i find i also even remember whatever i hear of his more than other artists, even the stuff that my head tells me isnt that great lol). im prob more critical of him than other artists for these reasons but im no longer - and thank god for this lol - expecting or even thinking he should/could make another masterpiece/'return to form'. those (blinkered?) days are gone!

42. "RE: Prince!!!! Live!!!! On a bloomin' Farm!!!"
In response to Reply # 0

I was born in 1979. I had an older brother who was born in 1972. As a result, he was around during Prince's commercial hey day. We were an East Indian family living in Toronto - my parents hadn't ever seen anything like Prince before and weren't too thrilled that their eldest son was a fan. Thriller had come out and we were all obsessed with it - we meaning my mother, me, dad was okay with MJ but my bro was just that much more into Prince.

I remember hearing all of the music that Prince was making back then. He was raw and exciting. While I wish Prince was making me feel the way his music used to, I certainly hope he can bring that magic back to his studio work. MJ was neat like Disneyland neat but Prince was the shit! He killed MJ!

Prince's music was daring and exciting - I remember songs like She's Always In My Hair, When Doves Cry, Little Red Corvette all pumping from the tapedeck stereo my parents bought for my brother. We drove to Cincinnati, Ohio once and had those big ass duracells in the back of this stereo, listening to Prince in the car!

Prince's fall from greatness is enormous and I certainly wonder why the fall was so hard. He's still really fun to watch live but the magic of his earlier music, show, product is certainly a thing of the past. His musicianship was top notch and he just appeared to write great songs at the drop of a hat. MJ and R.Kelly don't have anything in their catalogue that can hang out with Prince's finest compositions. MJ was a great entertainer but no where near the calibre of songwriter Prince was. R.Kelly doesn't even matter in this conversation and I enjoy many of his songs.

50. "new guardian interview"
In response to Reply # 0

http://www.guardian.co.uk/music/2011/jun/23/prince-interview-adele-internet/print

Prince: 'I'm a musician. And I am music'

Ringtones are evil. Islamic countries are fun. The record industry is still a den of thieves – and so is the internet. Prince talks to Dorian Lynskey about being pop's 'loving tyrant'

Prince is running late, and when Prince is running late the prospective interviewer begins to worry. I'm in the otherwise empty upstairs room of a chic Paris restaurant, its walls, carpet and banquettes all (perhaps by chance) a Prince-appropriate purple. As last trains and planes out of Paris are missed, I think of the writer in the early 90s who spent six days rattling around Paisley Park, Prince's Minneapolis nerve centre, waiting for an audience, only to have to speak to him on the phone. Even a relatively modest three-hour wait can make one nervous.

But suddenly there he is, sans entourage, full of handshakes and apologies. Perching himself on a banquette, he looks impeccable. His trousers and chunky polo-neck sweater are as black as his shiny, sculpted hair. His ring, ear cuffs and huge, shrapnel-like neck chain all gleam silver. His skin, uncannily smooth, does not look like that of a 53-year-old. Charisma seems to add a few inches to his height. He orders a cup of green tea. "They don't take Mastercard here," he says with a sly grin. "Only Amex. So I'll have to wash the dishes."

You expect funny peculiar from Prince, one of the few superstars who still enjoys an old-fashioned forcefield of enigma and hence endures the rumours that enigma tends to spawn. Funny ha-ha, however, is more surprising. He often seems mysteriously amused, cocking an eyebrow and pulling a coy, wouldn't-you-like-to-know smirk, but he likes to laugh out loud, too. He is determined to be entertaining.

Asked, for example, why he doesn't appear to have aged, Prince embarks on a baroque explanation that takes in an illustration of celestial mechanics involving a candle (the sun) and a sugarcube (the Earth); DNA research; his late father's Alzheimer's disease; the reason he doesn't celebrate his birthday ("If you look in the Bible there's no birthdays"); the importance of study; God's concept of time; and the Purple Rain tour. "Time is a mind construct," he finally concludes, setting his candle and sugarcube aside. "It's not real."

All of this is accomplished in a tone that ranges from preacher to schoolteacher to salesman to stand-up comedian to chat-show raconteur. He very rarely talks to the press ("If I need psychological evaluation, I'll do it myself") and his ban on writers using recording devices suggests a certain paranoia, but he's surprisingly good at being interviewed.

People must be intimidated when they first meet you, I say. Do you try to put them at their ease?

"I do that pretty quick. I'm real easy-going." He stares at me for a moment. "You're not intimidated, are you?"

Not now, but definitely by your reputation.

"A lot of that comes from other people. The press like to blow things out of proportion so this person becomes bigger than they are. The sooner this thing called fame goes away, the better. We got people who don't need to be famous."

Prince misses the days "when I could walk the street without being harassed and bothered". He remembers the first time he realised he was famous, around 1979. "It happened very fast. I had some old clothes on because I was going to help a friend move house and some girls came by and one went: 'Ohmigod, Prince!' And the other girl went," he pulls a face, "'That ain't Prince.' I didn't come out of the house raggedy after that."

Prince, along with Michael Jackson and Madonna, was one of the regents of pop music in its blockbuster pomp. Unlike them, he could do everything: sing, write, play, produce, design, make movies, call all the shots. With 1984's Purple Rain, he could simultaneously boast the No 1 album, single and film in the US. During his imperial phase, it felt like his only competition was himself. "I had creative control," he says proudly. "We had to fight for over a year before I even got signed. So whatever I turned in, they had to accept. They weren't even allowed to speak to me!"

Rumours circled him because he was such a defiantly outlandish presence: the pop star as inexplicable alien, with a sexuality as ambiguous as it was voracious, and so unsettlingly potent that the censorship lobby PMRC was spurred into existence by a single song, Darling Nikki. Did he work hard to make himself as fascinating as possible? "We were very fascinating," he says. "In Minnesota it was a clean slate. It was punk rock. There were a lot of fascinating people around."

He took so many gambles, in terms of image as well as music. Did he ever worry that he might blow it? "All the time. You want an example?"

Yes please.

He chuckles. "You'll have to pay for the autobiography." (There is no autobiography.)

Does he think the atomisation of pop culture since the 80s allows for another star of his stature? He thinks for a moment. "It would have to be manufactured. Michael and I both came along at a time when there was nothing. MTV didn't have anyone who was visual. Bowie, maybe. A lot of people made great records, but dressed like they were going to the supermarket." He thinks flamboyant showmanship is making a comeback but, he adds: "How many people have substance, or are they just putting on crazy clothes?"

What does he make of Lady Gaga? "I don't know," Prince says diplomatically. "I'd have to meet her."

Prince will happily talk about how much he adores Adele ("When she just comes on and sings with a piano player, no gimmicks, it's great") or Janelle Monáe, but he won't criticise other artists. "The new pushes the old out of the way and retains what it wants to. Don't ask me about popular acts. Ask Janelle. Doesn't matter what I say. We ain't raining on anyone's parade. I ain't mad at anybody. I don't have any enemies."

Actually he has many, but they're not fellow musicians. He is drawn back again and again to the perfidy of pretty much everybody in the music industry who doesn't make music themselves. There was, of course, that business in the 90s when he went to war with Warner Bros, changing his name to an unpronounceable symbol and marking his eventual exit from the label with a triple CD pointedly titled Emancipation. "A lot of people didn't know what I was doing," he says, "but it helped some people. I don't care what people think." He's not as angry now. "I don't look at it as Us versus Them. I did. But you know The Wizard of Oz? When they pull back the curtain and see what's going on? That's what's happened."

Now his opponents are no longer the ailing majors, but the people selling or sharing music online. He was one of the pioneers of self-financed website releases; more recently he made lucrative deals to give away albums with tabloid newspapers. But he has no plans to make a new album, even though he has hundreds of songs stacked up. "The industry changed," he says. "We made money before piracy was real crazy. Nobody's making money now except phone companies, Apple and Google. I'm supposed to go to the White House to talk about copyright protection. It's like the gold rush out there. Or a carjacking. There's no boundaries. I've been in meetings and they'll tell you, Prince, you don't understand, it's dog-eat-dog out there. So I'll just hold off on recording."

His management's pre-interview list of guidelines insisted, "Please do not discuss his views on the internet," but perhaps Prince hasn't read them. "I personally can't stand digital music," he says. "You're getting sound in bits. It affects a different place in your brain. When you play it back, you can't feel anything. We're analogue people, not digital." He's warming to his theme. "Ringtones!" he exclaims. "Have you ever been in a room where there's 17 ringtones going off at once?"

Does he have a ringtone?

"No," he says, looking as offended as if I'd asked him if he drove a clown car. "I don't have a phone."

He's equally put out by covers of his songs, Glee's version of Kiss being the latest offender. "There's no other artform where you can do that. You can't go and do your own version of Harry Potter. Do you want to hear somebody else sing Kiss?"

Next weekend, Prince is back in Europe – this interview is to promote his headlining appearance at the Heinken Open'er festival in Poland – but he bats away an inquiry about the annual Glastonbury rumours. "They use my name to sell the festival," he glowers. "It's illegal. I've never spoken to anyone about doing that concert, ever."

Touring is where the money is these days, of course, but it also seems to be where his heart is. He describes himself as a "loving tyrant. I'm probably the hardest bandleader to work for, but I do it for love." His band have rehearsed around 300 songs, from which Prince can choose at whim, which makes playing live more fun that it used to be. "Purple Rain was 100 shows, and around the 75th, I went crazy," he says, "and here's why. They didn't want to see anything but the movie. If you didn't play every song, you were in trouble. After 75 you don't know where you are – somebody had to drag me to the stage. I'm not going! Yes you are! It was bloody back then. I won't say why but there was blood on me. They were the longest shows because you knew what was going to happen." Now, he says: "If there's a challenge it's to outdo what I've done in the past. I play each show as if it's the last one."

For inspiration he keeps coming back to Sly and the Family Stone, and it was that band's former bassist, Larry Graham, who introduced him to the Jehovah's Witnesses a decade ago. The faith seems to have made him calm and content, albeit at the loss to his songwriting of the anguish, combativeness and transgressive sexuality that animated some of his strongest 80s material. "I was anti-authoritarian but at the same time I was a loving tyrant. You can't be both. I had to learn what authority was. That's what the Bible teaches. The Bible is a study guide for social interaction." He puts it another way. "If I go to a place where I don't feel stressed and there's no car alarms and airplanes overhead, then you understand what noise pollution is. Noise is a society that has no God, that has no glue. We can't do what we want to do all the time. If you don't have boundaries, what then?"

Sometimes he seems a little too fond of boundaries. "It's fun being in Islamic countries, to know there's only one religion. There's order. You wear a burqa. There's no choice. People are happy with that." But what about women who are unhappy about having to wearing burqas? "There are people who are unhappy with everything," he says shruggingly. "There's a dark side to everything."

Noting my unconvinced expression, he tries to clarify, but gives up with a sigh. "I don't want to get up on a soapbox. My view of the world, you can debate that for ever. But I'm a musician. That's what I do. And I also am music. Come to the show for that."

It's been over an hour, and he's starting to look restless. Does he feel most at peace when playing music?

"I can feel pretty peaceful doing other things as well," he says, with what I think might be a saucy look.

Does he ever feel nostalgic?

"I tend to dig some of the art from back then. I like putting it on shirts and bags. The fans dig it. But musically, no. Each band brings different songs out of you."

He keeps playing down his own stardom and doffing his cap to his band or God or Sly and the Family Stone, but does he ever think, perhaps midway through playing When Doves Cry to 30,000 people: "I'm really very good at this"?

"Well I don't think it," he smirks, raising an eyebrow. "I know it."

• Prince headlines the 10th anniversary Heineken Open'er festival in Gdynia, Poland, on July 2. The festival runs from 30 June to 3 July. Further details: www.opener.pl/en

Musically or in general? Most superstars are out of touch due to the money and fame.

It's rare to find an insanely wealthy superstar who is down to earth.
