TV One to Premiere New Unsung Season in June

Six new episodes of Silver Spring-based TV One's popular biography series “Unsung” begin airing next month.

The NAACP Image Award-winning show, which celebrates the careers of successful artists who have yet to receive their props, launches June 6 with Deniece Williams, then, follows with new episodes each Monday at 10 p.m.

The Spinners airs on June 13, Alexander O’Neal and Cherrelle follow on June 20, Big Daddy Kane is set for June 27, The Ohio Players premiere on July 4, and Evelyn Champagne King wraps up the season on July 11.

“New episodes of ‘Unsung’ continue to generate an incredible amount of positive feedback from our viewers,” said TV One Senior Vice President of Original Programming Toni Judkins. “The good news is that no matter how many episodes we produce, we never run out of candidates for new ones. The talent pool is so deep - there are so many remarkable artists who have had incredible raw talent and amazing careers, and whose remarkable stories have never been told. We are

delighted to keep bringing our viewers more of these incredible, real-life stories.”

Below, more info on artists highlighted in the new season:

Deniece Williams (premiere episode June 6) - Deniece’s refusal to compromise her ideals and put music first came with a heavy cost – ostracized from her church, three marriages that ended in divorce, and ultimately the dissolution of her career as a pop star. In this personally revealing episode of Unsung, Deniece tells her story with poignancy and humor, and is helped along by exclusive interviews with an all-star cast of her admirers that includes Johnny Mathis, Ray Parker Jr., Phillip Bailey, Verdine White, George Duke – and Stevie Wonder.

The Spinners (June 13) - The vocal group that may be the greatest of them all never quite got the recognition of their peers, in part because they blended together so seamlessly that no one was ever quite sure who was the star. But Henry Fambrough and Bobby Smith, who helped form the Spinners nearly sixty years ago, weathered triumphs and tragedies to make some of the most beloved pop standards of our time – R&B evergreens like “I’ll be Around”, “One of a Kind”, “Sadie”, and “Could it be I’m Falling in Love.” They spent nearly a decade at Motown driving cars for the label’s top stars while waiting for their own shot, then survived the abrupt departures of two lead singers, without ever missing a beat, or a show.

Alexander O’Neal and Cherrelle (June 20) – They were the Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell of their time – an unlikely pairing of opposite personalities that made musical magic together. Alexander O’Neal grew up poor and troubled in Mississippi, while Cherelle was the pampered daughter of a successful attorney in Beverly Hills. Both artists, whose most popular songs were often produced by the stellar team of Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, really took off when they were teamed together on unforgettable duets like ‘Saturday Love.’ Then, poised on the brink of superstardom, both of their careers abruptly fell apart, a casualty of both self-destructive acts and unforeseen tragedies.

Big Daddy Kane (June 27) - The smooth operating native of Brooklyn’s Bed-Stuy would exert a direct influence on Notorious B.I.G. and Jay-Z, both of whom took notes on his easy flow and take no prisoners style. (Indeed, Kane put Jay-Z on stage early on, giving the future Roc Nation mogul one of his early breaks) But as the West Coast sound crowded out stars from hip hop’s ‘Golden Era’, Kane seemed to fade from view.

The Ohio Players (July 4) - The Ohio Players were one of the most successful funk outfits of all time, scoring monster crossover hits in the 1970s like “Fire” and “Love Rollercoaster.” Along the way, The Players – with monikers like Sugarfoot, Diamond, and Rock - lived up to their names, with super-sexy album covers that got nearly as much attention as their songs, and by lifestyle excess that led to a major drug bust; not to mention a notoriety so extreme that the group was rumored to have killed someone during a recording session that included the dying screams in the grooves of a song. Ultimately, it was the I.R.S., and funky financial dealings among the Players themselves, that brought the group down.

Evelyn “Champagne” King (July 11) - The R&B & disco diva was discovered while singing at age 15 in the bathroom at Philly International Records, where her parents worked on the maintenance crew. When producer T. Life heard her, he assured the girl he would make her a star. And he did. Her 1979 debut single, “Shame” was an instant crossover smash and disco anthem. But those same high spirits left her vulnerable, not only to the slings and arrows of the music business, but to real life episodes of personal tragedy.

One season, I really, truly want to see a CAMEO biopic.
And the Gap Band as well. Sad that Robert Wilson didn't live to make it toward that.

Why he gotta share it with Cherrelle? His story is interesting enough to carry a show... drop Cherrelle in if you want but she should be a footnote.

Out of all the legendary rappers who came before Big Daddy Kane, I'm just surprised that BDK is getting an episode, anyway, I'm glad he got one though, I'm definately glad this series is gaining some attention but they need more episodes for the season six ain't going to cut it.

O'Neal and Relle..so..great for me.

Also wanna see Neicy and Ohio Players. As much as I'm a hip-hop fan I don't care for them on Unsung, seems odd and you can attack me but I like my stories r&b.

Can we get the S.O.S Band going next round please???

I want to talk to Jesus, my mama, and Marvin Gaye when I get to heaven.

I want to see the unsung on the ohio players because I saw their show at the flashback festival of 2009 and i remember Sugarfoot complained throughout the entire set like an old grouche talking about how the government saying that he has too many kids and how "yall aint paying me this much to work this hard" and when they went into sweet sticky thing........Sugarfoot says "yall going to have to sing cuz Im getting old" and when I emailed them on myspace to request a backstage pass so that they could sign my albums....he never replied back. I have 4 of their albums: fire, gold, honey, and pain
(from the westbound years). I also have jazzy lady album on 8 track cassette tape in which I love the song "sleepwalking"......regardless, I still voted for them because they were a good band. Roger Troutman of ZAPP and Lester Troutman even mentioned them in an interview as role models and mentors at that time when they formed ZAPP.

Yes he did. He had more of an impact as well. Dee was one of the first true lyricists in Hip-Hop, but Kane took the baton from Dee and ran w/it.

At least if they aren't going to be completely forthcoming... and I don't think Neicy was. I think they glossed over a lot of shit which is why the show ended up being so dry.

...but it's up to the show's producer to find the gold. there was obvious tension between her and the label. i mean she had a hit song and chose NOT to perform it at the Grammy's? had they interviewed someone from the other side, that might've spiced it up a bit.

there was no one who provided that "niecy could've been a (such and such), but she wouldn't budge off her principals" commentary. everyone interviewed was pretty complimentary of her. they didn't have anyone to provide a different take of her ability or personality.

that's on the show's producer. can't really blame her.

like when they were going over "Let's Hear It For The Boy" for example, how she sort of prodded George Duke to take on the song. LMAO.

I think they edited that stuff pretty well.

...for her to not even perform that song at the Grammys (a song that she wanted to do, but even her producer was like "Niecy dis some boosheeit") and then do a 7-year-old song that nobody was expecting (or probably knew for that matter), that's a story line that could've been told by someone from the opposite side. like there HAD to have been somebody that said, "you've ruined your career."

i mean, it makes her look sorta crazy. she does the song her producer was like, "nah." it becomes a number one hit, but then at the height of its success with the Grammys as her platform to possibly go higher...she goes Pentecostal?

there's no logic in that. this episode missed out on someone expressing that view point. they of course could've added her response to that view point, but to not have it at all just made the episode less compelling that others in the series.

she went Gospel b/c she wanted to use her voice in service of God. she followed her muse as she always had. it took her back to church. which she'd wanted to get back to since she was first kicked out for going secular. she'd even married a minister, sorta trying to get in the back door.

it made sense to me. i didn't feel something was missing from that part.

In response to Reply # 40

I have never been too clear about his departure from the Spinners and surprising lack of solo success.

I've read that he wanted more money since he was the highest profile singer, but I've also seen references to some emotional/mental issues.

And Thom Bell is amazing.

...for some reason the one on TVOne cuts off around the 30 minute mark.

"Rock music is deplorable. It is tribal. And it is from America. It follows ragtime, blues, jazz, hot cha-cha and the boogie-woogie, which surely originated in the jungle. We sometimes wonder whether this is the negro's revenge." Sept. 1956, The Daily Mai

I'm seeing it right now from going to www.tvoneonline.com and waiting for the first few screens: BDK, etc. to go by then the Cherrelle & Alex screen comes up. A person could click on the little cell that show the upcoming screens lower on the page.

K?

doesn't sound like I missed anything either

The fact they picked this dude made no sense to me... I mean Cameo, Charlie Wilson/Gap Band, Confunkshun, O'Byran, Kashif and a whole bunch of others are far more deserving and interesting than BDK

I don't think dude is that interesting nor had the catalog or impact to warrant his own episode. If they are going to lump Alex and Cherrelle into one episode then they should have just made this one about Cold Chillin’ Records and focused on BDK, Marley Marl, Biz, Mc Shan, Roxanne and all of them.

ain't but a few Rap acts worthy of a unsung and more are tied to labels that were successful to begin with.

..prolly the best episode of the season.

great analysis by Bootsie Collins on the music. good insight from the band on their business acumen (everybody got songwriting credit)...or lack thereof (missed tax payments killed 'em). i'd love to see the surviving members get together and just jam like they used to. if Sugarfoot, Rock, Diamond and Beck got together...i'm sure they could find some horn players to fill in the groove.

dope episode.

On a sidenote, since the model, from the "Honey" album cover wasn't interviewed, could it be true that their manager really did stick her, while they were recording "Love Rollercoaster" ? hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm............lol. Honestly, after watching this, it has me pulling up all my Ohio Players, on my ipod tonight.

alot of funk bands hate the idea of Unsung.

its like coming to grips with the fact that you had a shakespeare esque path of a career:

a rising action, a buildup, a pinnacle, a downfall and a drop and then a reflection.

and all for naught.

so i know (similar to hip hop honors---my Wu Tang story woulda bodied that whole Quest Celeb Story site) that this is an EXTREMELY hard show to produce. simply because they get FAR more "No!" than "Sure!"

lot of these acts are self conscious about how they look now or in denial about the downfall (el's refusal to do the show comes to mind, louis johnson refusing to talk to his brother after all these years for the on again off again Brothers Johnson ep, Prince refusing to clear his songs for the proposed Time ep)

so yeah, you gonna get alot of mary wells and pretty soon a few non artist eps like "The Story Of Solar Records" & "The Story Of Sugarhill Records" in the future.

i love this show.

just pray to god i never have to be its subject.

damn, i didn't even think of it like that. i'd hope that these dudes would be good with their legacy, and if not THAT, then they'd be happy that they were being recognized/honored/acknowledged.

El coulda used it as promo for his new album. DUMMY.

LMAO...i knew that it was more than a rumor, but ol' boy STILL ain't talking to his brother after all these years? lolololol. does anyone know why they don't talk to each other anymore?

as for 0+>...SMMFH. there's no way to give justice to a Time episode without playing the music. FOH, dude.

you're too high profile to qualify for this show at the present. unless Fallon gets canned, you wouldn't be eligible for this joint at all.

but would you decline it in the future (if Unsung is still around)?

For the record, Mary Wells recorded a bunch of singles and an album or 2 for Motown and after that she butted heads w/Berry. No one really knew why or where she went. I'm sure most of us wanted to know.

She's one of the Unsung ones too.
Even tho u don't necessarily see it that way.

I'm almost certain we've had this convo abt this last season. LOL

Gotta have patience, bruh.

There were a SLEW of acts out during that time (all the aformentioned bands) that should get their due and they will.

Considering the amount of detail, rarity of footage and (above all else) legal clearance, its going to take this show some time. Shit. I practically drew up picket signs for a Sylvers episode after the first season and we just got it.

In my mind, I've split the show into two parts: Unsung and Unsung: Behind The Music. Whereas P-Funk may not fit the same criteria as your Billy Preston, both deserve the documentary treatment that they likely wouldn't get elsewhere. The argument over who's the more unsung and who should get precedence, episode-wise, is as endless as finding subjects themselves. One thing I have to give TVOne credit for is they (seemingly) do listen to suggestions. Additionally, I'm sure there is quite a bit we are not privy to that goes on with these acts that TVOne pursues before a season is announced. Not everyone would be "flattered" at being featured on the show.

The whole goal of these shows seem to be to remind people about great artists that might be forgotten. They really haven't dealt with many scandals that would cause someone be turned off by the artist.

I just never cared for dude... especially his singles. Round In Circles was one of those songs that was ALWAYS on the radio and I hated that shit. He was one of those black "hippie" acts to me and living in the east bay at that time hippies were sort of like the boogieman. Plus dude had that big ass face with them crazy ass teeth lol. I'm not talking shit about anyone that digs him or his music... he just wasn't for me. I'm sure the fact I don't like the sound of an organ has a lot to do with it.

And no I'm not a big Sly fan and I detest gospel music. Any time I hear an organ I think of being stuck in church just waiting for that shit to end... it would get so bad that I'd act out just so I could go outside and get a swat or two (moms never would lay down the real beatings on church grounds lol) and get sent to the car. I even hated hearing an organ in those old pizza joints they used to have as well as baseball games... I've never been happier to see an instrument fall out of favor.

and it wasn't always black vs white... you had a lot of black families that relocated to Oakland in the 50s and 60s and joined the middle class.... for the most part they tended to be very conservative (not in the political sense) church going people. I was still a child then so our parents views on things carried a lot of weight. Maybe if we had been a little older things would have been different... but for my peers anything associated with "hippies" wasn't cool. In our minds they were the ones burning up People's Park, starting shit and keeping us from being able to go outside and play. Of course now I understand things were more nuanced than that but back then they were just dirty drug addicts to us.

In response to Reply # 126

I respect whoever edited/produced this episode because I was worried they were going to make sexuality the "scandalous" part of the episode.

But they kept it very factual and respectful, even with potentially explosive topics like his sexual abuse or the cases he caught (I'd first heard he was gay in the early/mid 90s).

In my opinion, the clip of Merry Clayton (?) emphasizing that Preston was not ashamed of being gay was CRUCIAL.

Musically, I did not know his roots were that deep. Playing with Nat Cole and Mahalia as a child? Damn! And I didn't know he was that deep/respected by the Rolling Stones. Wouldn't that make him the only musician to play with the Beatles and the Stones?

I don't think they mentioned his role in putting the Brothers Johnson on either.

His 1976/77 albums were decent, particularly It's My Pleasure, which has some deep grooves. They kinda played those albums off like they were trash.

Judging from people's comments, I'm glad I'm not the only one who can't stand "With You I'm Born Again," LOL. That track has absolutely no flavor or soul.

Excellent episode. Hope the Sylvers one is equally good.

where do i know Merry Clayton from? i swear it's not music. i googled some stuff and i saw that she's done a little bit of acting, but i didn't recognize any of the parts that she's done.

what role was that? i always assumed that Quincy was behind them. it was a trip to see homie playing with Billy though.

They were in Preston's touring band in the early 70s. I believe they connected with Quincy through Billy Preston.

as little as I knew about Preston in comparison to those above, I did know he was gay among other tidbits. I think belaboring that point would've brought down an uberinformative ep.

>Patrice Rushen

Definitely

>Charles Stepney

This won't happen b/c he's just a Producer/Arranger.
Not an artist.
He had a documentary coming out called Uninterrupted Greatness, but I think they lost funding for it. The trailer for it is on the 'Tube.

>The Intruders

I can see that one. I DO wanna find out what happen to Lil' Sam tho. Drugs took him out too early. My homie's friend's Dad was Robert in the group. He refuses to talk about his days with them tho. *shrugs*

>Gwen Guthrie

Hmmmm....
Have to get back to you on that one. Only songs I remember of hers was 'Rent' and 'Padlocking My Heart'.

>The Emotions

Absolutely.

>Stephanie Mills

Without a doubt.

I'd like to add:

Angela Bofill
D'Train
Millie Jackson
Candi Staton (Hers would need to be 2 hours, man. I've heard some stuff!)
Gap Band (I think this is happening next season tho)
Cameo (is a must!)
Maze & Frankie Beverly
Jean Carn
Pointer Sisters
Ashford & Simpson
Bohannon
Peabo Bryson
Jeffery Osborne

Edit:

Grace Jones
AWB
Kool & The Gang (I think I'd geek if they did that one)
D.J. Rogers (If anyone falls in the category of being Unsung, w/o question he certainly is.)
