Really? None? I don't get it - why? Is 3/4 time just not very compatible with rhyming or what?

I think you're more or less looking for hip-hop songs in a "waltz" time signature if I understand you correctly.

Jay-Z 'My 1st Song' and Kanye 'Spaceship' are two examples that come to mind. I know Cam'ron has at least one or two but I can't remember the names.

Most of the time, however, that signature isn't conducive to flowing well for whatever reason.

8. "The difference is only in sheet music language."
In response to Reply # 7
Fri May-06-11 12:20 AM by denny

They're the same thing....but the '8' signifies a difference in the language of the sheet music.

I'm not heavy in music theory...but when you read a time signature of '4/4' or '3/4'....the first number represents how many beats per bar and the second number represents how the sheet music translates 'how many beats a whole note gets'.

So in 3/4 time...a whole note gets four beats. In 6/8 time a whole note gets 8 beats. But the same piece of music could have both time signatures.....the only thing that would change is the rules of the sheet music.

By the way....'a whole note' in sheet music is a circle that is not filled in and has no stem. It looks like an O. A half note is an O with a stem that looks like a 'd'. A quater note is a 'd' that is filled in (darken the circle). The stem either points up or down depending on it's place in the ledger. (a 'd' or a 'p') After you assign how many beats a whole note gets....all of the other symbols fall into place. (if a whole note gets 4 beats than a half note gets 2 beats and a quarter note gets 1 beat)

Put simply, if you don't read sheet music...the second number is irrelevant.

The first number is important though cause you need to know it if you want to keep proper time. If the first number is 3 than you count along 1,2,3....1,2,3. If it's 4 you count to 4.....and so on. From that you can extract that there's no difference between counting to 3 or counting to 6. Nor is there a difference between counting to 2 or 4 or 8.

3/4 has three beats per bar with each beat getting equal emphasis. 6/8 is made of six beats with the emphasis on the 1st and 4th - two beats each cut in three.

It's not a sheet music thing, it's a rhythm thing.

The Roots did a song with Qtip (can't remember the name) but it's on illadelph and the verses got 3 bars of 4/4 and one bar of 3/4.

I'm sure there's something out there.

I know that Dilla/Slum's "Get dis money" threw me off, and I never knew what to call it, but someone here said it's called a "7-bar progression" because the melody/bassline starts back over on the 8th bar instead of the 9th. Same as Faith Evans "All night" which sampled something from the 80's which was a 3 bar progression.

that's 4/4 but it's also a 3 bar loop. if you count out 3 bars - counting each quarter note - it will repeat after 3 measures. the loop is funny though because on the 2nd measure the chord change occurs on the 3rd beat instead of the 1 on the following measure.

that's what was throwing me.

i sort of figured it was in 4, but the loop was in 3...
but something about it baffled me.
now i know it was the chord change.

thanks.

pretty much all of the examples people are listing are in 6/8. There is a difference (in feel especially). Best way to explain it is that in 6/8 there would be 6 hi -hat beats per bar with emphasis on the 1st and 4th (most likely kick on 1 snare on 4). Which in a way is similar to 4/4 time in rap except the rhythm of the words need to be different. (You could count groups of 4 in these songs and wouldn't really feel weird about it)

If it were really 3/4 there would need to be 3 beats of emphasis per bar and would most likely be something like (kick kick snare) or (kick snare kick)or (kick snare snare). I'm sure there are some rap songs out there like this but I can't think of any. Really there aren't much 3/4 songs in popular music in general.

The only ones I've seen so far in this thread is Gang Starr "Stay Tuned" and the Ohene jawn.

be 6/8??

Shit like Alicia Keys "Fallin" Prince "How come you don't call me" and Isley's "Don't say goodnight" would be 6/8 instead of 3/4 going off the way you explained the drums.

this is a weird one because the drums are obviously not very traditional in any form. If you wanted to call this 3/4 you can (as you could with any 6/8 feel really). But I can still hear the 6/8 feel if you think of it in the big, slower beats. For example, you can count the hi hats like "1 - two - three, 2 - two - three, 3 - two - three, 4 - two - three" and would be at the beginning of a bar everytime you got to 1. If you listen to the bass line, i think you can hear it.

I can't think of a situation where the drums are not playing in the time signature of the song.

That's how I figure it out. I find the down beats based on percussion - most of the time.

The fact is that you CAN count any song in any time signature. It's just gonna be awkward as hell. And that's the scenario in this song. If you hear 3/4 as the prominent rhythm in this song, I don't know what to say.

which guises it and makes it harder to catch.

why do you think its such a simple beat pattern? (c'mon dun - its outkast nothing about them has ever been THAT simple)

does it not fit into the meter i described earlier? (4 bar rotations of 3/4)

is it so far fetched that the snare and kick just might alternate beats in order to fit said pattern?

for instance: the kick hits on 1, the snare on 2, the kick on 3| then the snare on 1, kick on 2, snare on 3 & so on.

it may seem a bit advanced but that's about as "sesame street" style of a break down i can get yo! if you still missin it - God bless & good night.

It's a 3 bar loop.

To follow the chord progression.....when the first kick drum hits....simply count to 12 and repeat. You'll fall right into the groove.

Same thing as electric relaxation and 'worse comes to worst'.

I made a post about hip hop songs with a 3 bar loop a couple years ago. Noone could name one before Electric Relaxation....still wondering if one exists. But there was alot of them listed....more than I realized. It'd be interesting to hear someone make a mix with with only 3 bar loop songs. I'll see if I can pull up that post but I think it's Ghandi with the Wind.
